Given that Hearts of Iron starts in 1936 and games can diverge very much from IRL even if you play Germany to the letter historically, might not the start of Victoria in 1835 really ensure that a lot of major late-19th century events and WWI might not happen at all. Given that the AI has a 5% chance of taking an ahistorical option when offered, all it could take is one ahistorical AI choice in a major power to create a whole chain of events that could lead to some very different worlds from what actualy existed by 1914. Personally I think that will be very cool as I really like playing ahistorical games in HoI but I think there may be a lot of people who might just have an aneurism if WWI or the US Civil War doesn't fire on schedule.

Perhaps I am being too pessimistic and Paradox can resolve that potential in the AI to go ahistorical in a long duree game, but I think I'll build a bunker for when the griping hits once the game is released. "Why did the US Civil War start in 1849".."Why didn't WWI break out" "Why can't Prussia unify Germany". I can already hear the moaning.

Don't worry, I'll be the one posting "Why did the US Civil War start on schedual, when I already outlawed Slavery" and:

"Why did WW1 begin in 1914 with the assassination of the Austrian Arch Duke, when Austria has been a part of the German Empire for the past 50 years" :)

They better not make events which keep thigns to much on schedual; I'm sick of having to come up with unique ways to explain away real world events popping into my AH in my AARs :)

.. and I want ships to have graphics for individual turrets which I shall be able to shoot with individually. Anything else would be totally weird and not at all realistic...

Guys, dig this. if you don't like the 1835 start date, there's an 1864 start date. And an 1914.

The potential to go ahistorical is why many (most?) of us play Paradox....

If you're not into scripted events, tough luck. Here's me hoping triggers will be more advanced this time around to avoid the most obvious problems...

But come on. Be reasonable.

While you're at it, demand an AI that can beat the best players in singleplayer. I'm sure you'll get one.

I agree. For many casual gamers like myself the appeal is not in minutely tracking the historical development of a nation or being told that to match their achievements is almost impossible. Its applying your knowledge of the game system, free of the historical bias and prejudices of the day to take your nation in a different direction or exceed historical achievements. Of course there need to be limits so that massive conquests cannot be easily achieved but to prevent exceptional achievement I believe narrows the appeal and replayability of the game.

People who want a historical game just have to buy some tactical game on the subject they want. At the strategic and long time play, you can't be historical. You're just experimenting the what if?

In history some very little choice made by one guy change the world outcome. Think about that Napoleon III, hesited a while before keeping neutrality during Prussia/Austria war of 1866. What about if i allied with Austria (the Prussian juggernaught don't have some vacation at Sadowa and bismarck was near to eat his cigar...)

And there is plenty of exemple in the 19th where one choice make the difference. With the number of country and (i hope) the number of event for each one you will have lot of chance to go ahistorical.

So ahistorical result his commited to the game and his what people want. Paradox game are pretty bad for short time scenario, the lack the tons of event required for such gameplay: they let the fans do the job... (think about the Napoleonic or Us independance scenario of EU II...)

Slargos, being Swedish, chose the year of the Second German-Danish war for his hypothetical scenario. But he doesn't know what scenarios are actually present (those of us who do are under NDA).

Hear hear! :D

As for the scenarios, Demetrios and Dark Knight are of course correct. I am privy to no secret information as I am not a Victoria beta... It's just guesswork on my part.

These are not the scenarios you are looking for. *waves his hand suggestively*

Well, I'm not a beta, so I can, without breaking my NDA, tell you:

There will be an 1860 scenario. It's been mentioned in this forum several times, and I'm 99% sure that Johan and/or Greven mentioned it themselves. A Vicky without an ACW scenario would result in just too many flame wars between Americans and Euros.

And let us be thankfull that the game will not follow historical time line.

'Load Game. You now can watch as the game plays only a historical game, You can do nothing to change what your country will do.'

No thanks - I want to change history - if I cant I might as well read a book!

Well, Duuk, 1860 wouldn't only be the ACW scenario, but probably also the German and Italian unification scenario.

Also almost Meiji Restoration for Japan. :)

I think 1860 would be a good scenario starting date, as a number of important events around the world happen near that time (American Civil War, Japanese Meiji Restoration, Italian Unification, German Unification, and others), as well as it is a good middle starting point (25 years after start, 60 years before end).
