This is slightly off-topic, but I realized quite by accident that it has been 12 years to the day since SimCity 4, the last real attempt at a city builder in the vein of Cities: Skylines, came out. At the time I would have been in tenth grade, and there is a very real chance that SC4 was the last game my mother purchased for me (much as EU2 was the last game my dad purchased for me). I remember many good times with SC4 (including using the game to occupy some time on a train from New Haven back to Williamsburg one night in 2006), but I can hardly believe it has been that long.

So while we wait for Skylines to come out and for that long drought to end, I figure we could probably swap some SC4-related reminiscences (which I'm sure many of us have).

They wouldn't really be reminiscences for me as I played it last weekend :)

Despite the age and the graphics the modding community has kept SC4 alive all this time. This is evidenced by Youtuber's still doing Let's Plays of it.

EA had One Job, to take all the great things from SC4, correct the things that don't work, introduce any new features that they wanted to add, create new graphic assets and build in Modding support (Steam Workshop?). Instead we got SC 2013, which as a game many people do like and play, but for me is no where near as fun.

I would be interested to see other's suggestions for SC4 YouTuber's, I really enjoy watching what they do, so I can steal ... er, creatively acquire their ideas.

Wow, it's been 12 years already! And I've been playing it for all those years! Good base game + LOTS of mods created a classic, it will always be remembered :) And I'm so happy I helped (just a little bit) to keep it alive by making some buildings for it!
I really, REALLY hope that C:S will be another SC4. I wish it to CO, Paradox, all the players and myself :D

Dare I mention the unmentionable: Simcity Societies?

I just blacked out for a moment. Be careful with what you mention in such a forum.

I wont knock sim city 5 too much, it is what it is i suppose. Its a pretty game, but it seems thats all it is. Its very shallow and simplistic, it always reminds me that im playing a game and not running a city. More like draw a picture of a city block, seems to be the point of it, my nephew thinks its fun because hes 10. so i gave it to him awhile back.

I recently purchased sim city 5 again and was playing it now that its working and relized how simplistic it is, so i wandered here thinking Citys skyline was something like City Life, if you know that game. But then i watched some videos and im super excited about this, as it seems like what the sim city 'reboot' should have been, a true city builder, with real sized citys. And i hate to say Cities XL disappointed me too because of its giant lifeless citys, and in the end was a simple game that felt more like jumping through game hoops then running a realistic working city. Luckily i got sim city 2000 for free from EA and that's more fun then cities XL or sim city 5

Sim city 4 is good was fun but it feels pretty dated, and im always disappointed no one could make a city building game using what a modern PC can do, untill now.

I didn't mind SimCity Societies

but importantly

1. I got it at a big discount

2. I got it a long, long time after the launch date when I knew exactly what it was and exactly what it wasn't, so I had no expectations to be stamped upon.

Cities XL failed to meet its goal because of the infamous memory leak bug and it was just a buggy mess, but I still enjoyed it. The modding community kept SC4 alive, I can honestly say that, I can't build a city without my mods, even CXL 2012.
