Interesting idea. In comination with a reduction of research time this would create a vast galaxy with immense travel times - think of W40K.
I can imagine a playthrough several weeks long.

Yep. I think an adaption of research costs are mandatory in such a big galaxy. Also a reduction of density of colonizable planets. So most system could be just "empty" or with only mining and defense stations in them. It would change the ways wars are fought out drastically.

While these scenarios with infinitely vast space are awesome, they are hard to make work in video games. More you add stuff less it starts to matter while game progresses. More stars doesn't add depth to the game, it adds only width. More planets, more resources, more ships, more lag, more micromanagement.
I prefer playing with huge galaxy with 25% habitability - that gives out pretty nice feeling of emptiness, as most of the galaxy does not support life in any way.

That's something I am working on with my mod. Increased research times, larger systems, slower non-ftl drives and a chain of interstellar drives where the first means of interstellar travel are VERY slow, think of maximum 20% of light speed, and in mid- and lategame more powerful means of travel will be discovered. I plan to increase the play time, by making the scale of advancement a lot larger, with the low end being extremely weak, close to earth now, but over the course of a long time, you slowly expand and develop means to have a galactic empire.
As it is now, it feels wrong that after only 200 years in space, you are able to beat thousands of years old FEs and construct f***ing dyson spheres around a star. I am still in early development, but if you are interested, check out the link in my signature.

thats right but if your machine is weak you should be able to adjust the game in a way that you also play only the usual no. of turns and 95% of the galaxy remains dark in the fog of war. Would the performance still be abysmal? Isnt it true that most of the computing power is used up by graphic display while the calculation of empires which are still in the fog of war is not that costly?

No. Graphics might be the majority of the computing cost on turn 1, but outside of watching large battles, the cost remains more or less constant as the game goes on. Late game lag is pretty much entirely the game simulation, and fog of war does not make that any cheaper.

Yeah. You really have to be able to abstract out the distant parts of the simulation. Some kind of LOD thing, only for economics and AI.
