Also try just reading the article on the Rheinwiesenlager themselves. It's commonly accepted it was not fun times for anyone but the accepted death totals are 3000 (US estimate) to around 5000 (German estimate). It was also the result of the US expecting about 3 million POWs and dealing with 5 million instead, in addition to about 13 million German civilians in need of aid.

Firstly i didn't talk about the other losses book i quoted from a book Hellstrom: the Death of Nazi Germany 1944-47 is a meticulously researched encyclopedia of Allied war crimes during World War II. In it, historian Thomas Goodrich carefully compiles statements of scores of eyewitnesses, including Allied pilots and war correspondence about US, British and Russian atrocities against German civilians and POWs during and after the war.

Isn't it funny how much material was lost between January and March?
And isn't it funny that LSSAH was back on normal strength by April?

Just some food for thought:
1. Karabiner (K98): From over 13.000 down to just below 3,000
2. MGs: From above 1600 down to 131
3. "Soll" is changing as if the structure had changed within these two Month... maybe due to a refit? ... maybe in Belgium?
4. Maneuverability: From nearly 90% down to 30%
5. ...

Why are the numbers of the men not looking much different? Because subordinate some new units under the command of a new LSSAH is rather simple and an easy step to refresh a unit.... getting the material to this personel is far more complicated. Especially with a Division with such a "prestigous" name...

So, with all due respect, I'm not conviced but feel by your sources confirmed.

Das Reich is perhaps one of my favorite German divisions of World War II. I think it would be really neat to eventually see all of the divisions that partook in the Normandie campaign but as a previous poster said earlier in this thread it might not be feasible simply because there are a lot of overlapping roles in the divisions. Maybe one day Eugen will be able to do that though! Who knows!

With the same logic apparently the brits lost all their man in Dunkirk because they left their equipment behind like the units that did in the Cherkassy-pocket.

The book, OTHER LOSSES, found its way into the hands of a Canadian news reporter, Peter Worthington, of the OTTAWA SUN. He did his own research through contacts he had in Canada, and reported in his column on September 12,1989 the following, in part:
"...it is hard to escape the conclusion that Dwight Eisenhower was a war criminal of epic proportions. His (DEF) policy killed more Germans in peace than were killed in the European Theater."

But im going to stop before i get banned

Except they never were in the pocket but part of the relief-force... so... why do they have lost so much material?
