Even here in Canada, 1 month vacations are super rare. The developpement team is kinda Lucky. There aren't many programmers working @ 30$ per hours with 1 month vacations arround :)

6 weeks are common here, though the legal minimum is 5 weeks. Unsurprisingly a lot of people take 3 to 4 weeks off during summer.

Scandinavia ftw :)

Norway has a mandatory 4 weeks and 1 day vacation, with almost everyone having 5 weeks. For three weeks during the summer everything shuts down, unless I have a good excuse to not take those weeks off I get shooed out of the office. Sweden, the buggers, have even better vacations...however I think the poor sods work half an hour longer every day. Of course they have their "Fika" in the afternoon, all year long.

I think that's pretty normal in Europe, actually. At my last job, our company did business with a particular company in France, and that business would always grind to a halt every August because, apparently, the whole country is just closed that month.

You just got 35-45 days a year. And you can use them whenever you want (if your boss agreeed). Most people take 3-4 weeks in summer and just use the other days at other moments. Sometimes you have some fixed days you have to use some of these days, like x-mas. Or very rarely: If the company has a kind of Industrisemestern those days are fixed days and you cant use them at an other moment.

Most companies need to be availible every day and if everyone goes at holiday at the same day, it is a disaster for the company. Most companies want the vacations to be spread, so the works can continu. If you want on holiday, but you ask your boss too late, it can be you cant, since already many others are on holiday. I knew someone who cant even get holiday in the summer, since people with little children have there first pick and always pick some weeks in july / augustus and he havent children.

This is normal to me.

That just suggests that we in the 'non 5-6 weeks vacation a year' countries need to sort out our economies/societies a bit better ;).

Having just moved to the US I don't understand this work mentality because more hours does not equal increased productivity. The Germans have it right they work some of the fewest hours but always rank highly for productivity.
