I don't really follow. Why all FEs are supposed to function similarly?

Because they kinda do now? Aside from their unique triggers for improving/worsening relations (including requests from Materialist/Xenophile). I mean, you can always see what is their opinion of you (and why it is such), they follow the same "trading" rules and same border access policies. Suddenly having one that is radically different - but still counts as a proper FE - would be kinda strange.

We don't even know if these benevolent robots are even present at the start of the game. It could be that they appear a while after the Contigency, and are just an overpowered nation.

They live on a ringworld but only have 3 planets. What's with the fourth section? Is that the one it's talking about?

I am gonna nickname them Robobros because they seem nicer than the FEs at first glance. I also think I am gonna horribly regret naming them Robobros once we learn more about them.

Where did you get the idea that the synth robot empire is benevolent?

Mainly because they seem like one of those "anti-Crisis" features. After all, if you are a Synth they do seem to scan you for Contigency corruptions,
Though granted, the way they talk make it look like their programming is shoddy and they will end up screwing up the refugees unintentionally. And of course, to make the game unpredictable and make use of that ? opinion modifier, their nature might vary from game to game.

Fallen empire pretty much confirmed?

And @Wiz you cheeky bastard. You were already hinting at the existence of this mechanic way way back. You really do enjoy teasing us.
The post I made here on 14 june already had a beta refuge system in it. If you look closely to the top of the diplo screen you can see Delta refuge
So, they live on three of a Ringworld's 4 segments (with only 60 pops, meaning that 5 tiles on each segment are ruins), boast impossibility of their ringworlds being fully compromised, there already is a teaser of a completely empty except for loads of debris Beta Refuge system, have this Enygmatic opinion and are supposedly benevolent robots. My prediction: they are either so terribly programmed or are in fact partially compromised by the Contingency (they can't even rememer its name) that all the species supposedly protected by them weren't and are now dead. Or they actually have 3 ringworld with 3 empty segments on each and will in fact use them to provide refuge to species suffering from extermination by endgame crises or maybe just the Contingency.
Also, their Awakened state will seek to ensure that their subjects open borders to refugees and only colonise planets with pops that are not of their primary species. Let's see how orrect I am.

Look at the last stream. Hive mind ethos was renamed to gestalt consciousness, hive mind authority was divided in 2: The old Hive Mind and the new brain icon. The new brain icon is probably a synthetic start.

The new FE is enigmatic because their behavior probably will depend from your actions and from rng.

I guess the new FE is enigmatic and you can't see their opinion, because they are supposed to be simply machines, programmed by someone to do something a long time ago. Taken the hints from the screenshots, my guess is, that they are supposed to provide some kind of save heaven against the Reaper-style guys. But because they are ancient their programming tends to malfunction from time to time, so you can never be sure of their benevolence ...

These kind synths are merely operating a safe and clean organics zoo.

Their opinion is enigmatic because they see us as stray pets in need of their care. It's a kind of condescending benevolence.

@Wiz im crying because the patch looks so awesome so far. I dont want it to be rushed, take your time and iron out errors, improve stuffs and all, but whats your time estimate.... :(:(:(:(:(:(:(:(
