I think you are supposed to Westernize when you are small.

But I am small :( I wont even dare to dream catching my 1.4 campaign in borders, not the least to say in colonies.

You think it wont be worth the effort to do so now or that I wont be able to handle the unrest?

As eastern tech, westernization is not necessary. Whether it's even a net positive if you do it ASAP is debatable (I don't think a long term savings of a few hundred points of each type is worth the up front cost under most circumstances), but in the late 16th century I'm fairly sure it isn't.

Just find an adjacent westerner to ally for the western arms trade modifier (-10% tech cost) if you haven't already and you are golden.

Just yesterday i have tried to play as Byzantium for the first time, and i was incredibly lucky.

Day one, i have send my diplomats to Austria and Poland to improve relations in order to get alliances while ignoring galley spam tactic, and the day before Ottomans DOW on me, which was in the first half of 1447, i have managed to secure alliances with Austria and Poland, and the rest is history.

Of course i have hired diplo rep advisor.

If my emperors haven't been dropping like flies in the first 50 years, with two 10 years long regency councils i would be in much better shape, still i have managed to return all of my cores and push to Anatolia and have Serbia, Bulgaria and Bosnia as vassals.

Like i said i was very lucky, because i know how difficult Byzantium can be.

On the contrary, I think you were unlucky. Usually the Ottomans have attacked me late enough that I've been able to get at least one of Poland/Austria as an ally even without a dip rep advisor.

While them attacking you when you had secured both allies is sort of lucky, I'd characterize it as bad AI more than anything else.

I HATE THIS GAME LOL

Just about to attack Venice, take Istra, release Crete, Corfu and Naxos, Join the HRE; instead the Ottos declare on Athens of all places, still my vassal.

So, big war, I crush the Ottos in a long campaign, Austria and Aragon are there with me, so is my vassal Serbia...but I can't take anything because then I will be too big to join the HRE!!!%$!@%@%

So, release Athens, give them Thes in the peace deal, get Ottos to release Epirus and a couple other countries in their territory.

Now, getting ready for Venice, Venice delcares on Ottos, fine. I declare, get to Istria first because Austria has a claim there, destroy the much larger Venitian navy in a series of battles where my fleet size actually goes up (gg 4 fire, 4 maneuver Admiral), but Crimea beats up Genoa and gives me Chios. I think I am too big now, I might have to release Serbia. Why do I have to go to work!!

How do you join the HRE as Byzantines now that the flee to Italy trick is out and galleys back in?

I always dream for the moment when they'll release a "custom HREsque structures". Being able to make your own HRE with the balkan nations and the turkish beyliks in there would be quite fun. Or decentralized India for example.

In order to join the HRE you'll need to move your capital in there and would need to conquer most of the balkans (Serbia + Bulgaria ?) before you can move your capital back to Constantinopole.

I can't move my capital to Dalmatia, I've cored it, it's been a couple of months, I am not at war, have lots of admin and am at zero stab. It says I cannot move my capital from Constantinople.

That'll be the historical capitals thing 1.9 introduced. Byzantium can not move its capital from Constantinople. You'll have to create a chain of provinces leading around the Greek coast.

Alright so here's how I'm doing in 1593.

5B4DB1B4335A280E0B5DF94B4C6C97878D32DECC

Naples and Bohtan are vassals, with Naples being ready to get integrated as soon as I get my diplo rep back into the positives. Also, Austria is of my dynasty and their ruler is getting old, with his heir being only a couple years younger, so I'm hoping for some PU opportunities. I'm now trying to focus on expanding east by feeding Bohtan as much as the QQ and Persia blob as possible, although Persia has an inordinate amount of troops which is annoying.

Meanwhile, Spain is being a pain as usual, by declaring on me to take Naples back while I was busy saving Austria's ass in the massive league war. I barely managed to hold on until I could get a white peace, but they wiped half of my fleet in the process. However, I'm just about ready for round 3, and if France actually decides to help me then it should be a curbstomp.

Finally, does anyone know the best way to convert Rome? I have religious ideas, an inquisitor, 50% patriarch authority, and I enacted several decisions that increase missionary strength, but it's still not enough.

There are some policies affiliated with religious ideas that might be of help. Otherwise you may have to wait for the cathedral building (which is quite late though). If you are very close a boost to fort level might just be enough (they give 0,1%... so it may still be a pain in the ass). Don't forget though that your National ideas also contain another buff to missionary strength!

PS: Nice little empire ;)

How do you guys managed to annex the Mams so soon? I am at 1615 and I just reached Jerusalem. Those darn Truce timers are killing me :(

I guess them controlling half of Anatolia really slowed me down.

Like you destroy all big empires:

Destroy them from the inside. Drive up their war exhaustion to max in every single war. Don't occupy provinces were you actually want them to spawn rebels. If you do that, you won't be fighting one big Mameluks anymore, but several small to middle sized enemies which don't share the same truce timers. If you play it smart you can even play a vassal game: Take one Syrian province in your first war and release them as your vassal. In the aftermath (if you really wrecked them with war exhaustion and maybe one disaster) or else after the next war, all those nice Syrian provinces will flock to your vassal's banner through rebels.
