I have had some success under both the regular start and the back in time start, but back in time is definitely easier of course. Generally following the strategies here I had some good luck, Venice allied Genoa, when I released Athens they allied Cyprus, allowing me to declare on Athens and skip the Mamluks getting involved. Nice alliances like that. I took Circassia as a vassal and turned it into a March, it had claims basically all over Crimea, so I have a nice shield on that side.

I force vassalized Serbia and much to my surprise took over their war with Bosnia so that was a two shot. I've been allied with Austria and Poland since very early, but they never joined my wars, they did keep people from declaring on me. Now I am getting read to isolate Erdine in my second Otto war and Austria and my new ally Castile will join, Poland is too busy losing the aforementioned wars to do much of anything. Very fun.

Is this new with Orthodox? I must admit I never played too far beyond the initial war with the Ottos, but so far, no rebels in either case, and no significant unrest or rebel chance, both provinces were Orthodox, one owned by the Ottos (Vidia) and one by Genoa (Caffa).

I was at war with the Ottos and got a free core on Vidia, I forget the text but it was to do with religion. I was also at war with Genoa, but in this case, maybe because the province is Greek, Caffa just outright flipped to me.

So, that was pretty cool.

By the way, the AI is insane, Poland/Lith (PU)/Bohemia and Brandenburg, at war with the Hansa/Livonian/Teutonic order and Pommerania
Meanwhile the king of Ryazan dies giving Muscovy a PU and Poland chooses to contest it? What? Crazy. Is the succession war automatic? That's not a war they should have taken. The AI is nicely opportunistic now in terms of taking advantage of nations in a weakened state, which is why Novgorod, a large Sweden and Hungary declared on Poland right after that.

Be aware, after restarting the game your vassals setting re aggro/do your own thing/attach will have been reset. Take advantage of the new mechanic to get Serbia/Bosnia to attach until it is safe and then siege specific provinces by going to the province window and choosing with vassal/ally should siege it.

I allied Poland and Hungary for protection in the early game. But I declared war against the Ottomans by myself. Just blocked the strait and they couldn't get access. I did have to wait awhile before I could separate peace Timurids/etc. but it seems like you can take a lot more land now, and the AE doesn't seem to matter as much.

Though they lost the cores, Byzantium got a huge boost with the change to Empire form of government; Empire gets an additional -0.10 autonomy monthly meaning that autonomy is reduced at TWICE the rate as other form of governments for Byzantium. As Byzantium do not hesitate to boost Autonomy to reduce revolt risk; your sneaky clerks, bureaucrats, and lawyers are already behind the scene integrating the province back into the Empire.

But has the loss of cores been confirmed as a non-bug?

Cores don't matter. I finally got to playing Byz and it was.... too damn easy. If lithuania gets under Poland into a PU, they won't give access to ottos so you kill them with superior navy, get your cores back in 1 war, get Albania too and get 1 core of Bulgaria so you can return cores to them in the next war. To get Ottos to change their capital from Edirne, you just need the territory left of hudaventigar, you don't need all 3 of them so GG. I got Cyprus from a rebelion, and I also got 2 territories on Crimea by rebelion. Got Crete by an event. It just popped up and said " Hello this is your territory" :D Altho I was at war at Venice at the time so I'd take it anyway. Byz is much easier in 1.8 than it was in 1.7. Trade income is very good from the start so you can have many galleys and still be positive. As soon as you return your cores, fabricate on Serbia and get them and their new Golden territory for more income. I had 50 galleys for my 2nd war with Ottos. If u have problems with maintaining them at peace, just mothball them and gg. Ofc ally Poland and Austria and you will win always. When Commonwealth forms.... Well they just steamroll Ottomans and AI always transfers occupation to you so GG. In my game Muscovy didn't take Expansion as the first idea so it seems it got to the back of the queue, they have 3 idea groups now:religious, defensive and started trade ideas. So no one to counter the Commonwealth. I might get Expansion thou and conquer my way trough hordes.... :)

So I figured I'd do a trial run, it's definitely doable but I did save scum a few times since I'm mostly using this run as a learning process. I am westernized in this file game which I rushed by purposely holding back my admin tech jumping religious for the +3 strength to prepare to the future. I was 4/7/7 when I westernized off of Aragon.

0uAhS15.jpg

Started off by disbanding my cogs and merchant ship and building around 28 galleys and doing as previously suggested in the thread picking off half of ottomans navy then posting them in the strait and building more as Venice gave me subsides. I had about 32 galleys total mid way thro the war though (make sure you get ottomans cogs or they will ship around the strait!!! I failed my first run because of this). After the first war was over I took a fair bit of land, mostly cores but I connected Constantinople with the western side leaving the 3 provinces between Wallachia and Serbia, and the city Edirne to Ottomans. After that I vassalized Serbia who has eaten Bosnia, I then royal marriaged Poland and Allied them (THEY ARE CRITICAL TO THE FUTURE WARS WITH OTTOMANS!). I see a lot of posts here saying they got alliances with Venice/Austria and Poland but I could only get an alliance with Poland and that was after the first war.

After that I declared war on Ottomans again this time with Poland/Lithuania and Vassals and won and took the 3 provinces above Edirne then another war the 3 provinces across the strait and cutting off Edirne. Somewhere between those 2 wars I took Venice land/islands and Genoas in a Naples war that I used to Westernize off of Aragon.

All in all really fun game so far and I'll probably play it through. Hope this helps a bit.

1.8 iroman game after the 4th try

just dow on bosnia without ally before the warning from ottoman, declared war to serbia and other bosnia claim, allied with austria and poland after the war against bosnia, worked to improve relation with muscovy and allied with them too, poland broke the alliance after a bit and worked to ally with france after that, declared war to ottoman at the right moment and retake some of the core, austria broke the alliance, few war against hungary and got some nw province and continued like that,so byzza with 1.8 are not impossible

I always hated this strategy with a passion. It was not needed before and now with 1.8 it is plain BAD.You spend MP (stability increase,WE reducing) to do what exactly? Gain aggressive expansion?

Huh, I've done it differently from others here. I built up my navy but the Ottomans just sat there so I declared war on Venice and brought Austria/Aragon in with me. I got unlucky, Poland lost Lithuania extremely quickly (no idea how) and I got wracked by -stab hits, but I got Corfu, Noxus, and Rhodes from Venice. During the war, the Ottomans declared on me and Poland, Austria, and Aragon all leaped to my aid. Of course, 25k men were already across the straight and he was able to siege and take Constantinople but I sank his fleet, and just waited for the Poles and Austrians to wear down the Ottoman army until there was nothing left. Then I just carpet sieged the Greek side. Got half my cores and Burgas. Next war, I took the rest of my cores and a few on Anatolia side. Edirne will be taken in the next war, along with whatever else I fancy. By that time I'll have Croatia as a vassal. My main risk now is simply revolts, which don't look too bad either.

Well, there are multiple ways to win now, but a navy bigger than the Otto's with a decent admiral is key, because you will have to fight Venice and the Mamluks sooner or later.

I improve relations with all the major powers, now my family is on the throne of Castile and France. I am allied to Austria and Poland, and have been since the beginning.

By the way Paradox, can you let us rebel hunt in the subject provinces of our allies? Lithuana basically got carved in half by some national rebels I've never heard of because Poland peaced out of a war we were in, then I was exiled and couldn't help Lithuana.

AI definitely builds a lot more ships...sometimes. After taking Corfu and Noxus from Venice and completely destroying their fleet, I watched them build over 50 galleys over the next 10 years.

Hello,

I am playing Tuscany game (1.8, not ironman, no lucky nations) and now it is 1570. Some strange things happened in my game (i had no effect on them - I was busy in Italia region and north Africa):
1. Byzantium is alive and prosperous, they have returned most cores.
2. Ottomans are being crushed by Byzantium, Hungary and Mamluks.
3. Novgorod beat Muscovy multiple times and they are bigger than Muscovy now
4. Commonwealth is formed and they are great in size
5. AI loves transporting troops now. In the beginning of the game while 100 years were still going I allied France, they called me in their war against England I accepted. Few months later English transport arrived and landed stack of 10+ soldiers and wiped me out :( And there was multiple cases in later game where i witnessed AI naval landings, they love it now :)
6. Even Genoa kicks ass now :) I was looking for opportunity to take Genoas Italian holdings (they had quite big stack - 17 units in Liguria). And suddenly they are fighting in a big war against Crimea, golden horde and ottomans. They immediately loaded all their troops on a transport and I was looking in a ledger when they will be killed by ottomans. But instead Genoa kicked some asses and annexed some Crimea and ottomans lands :)

I love 1.8 :)

u cant beat ottoman with galley is useless build them and overcap your naval forcelimit, ottomans after a couple of years got like 48/55 galley is impossible to beat them on the first war with them, when they lose a lot of greek territory they do less money and galley are worth.
To play byzza u need to be lucky on the first 10/20 years only that sometimes otto lose war and the winner force them to give u back 1 or 2 core same against venice.
And btw i say that for an iroman game play normal way without lucky nation is too easy.
