I've been running observer games (all AI, fastest speed) over the last couple of hours and over several sessions of various length (longest running being slightly over 100 years) I've noticed one common pattern: Machine Empires, regardless of their type or personality, never build any armies. No defensive armies, no assault armies, not even after researching more advanced tiers.

In fact, they don't produce armies even during war. Unable to occupy planets, they just bombard them forever, chase after enemy fleets or (in case of one Determined Exterminator I was watching) sit in spacedock twiddling their servos.

DLC: All of them.

Mods: Only cosmetic ones like Beautiful Universe, Reduced Aura Graphics and Clean Space. I did have some of my mods active in the first few games but I disabled them in later tests to ensure no interference. The results did not change.

Reproduction Steps:
1. Start the game as any empire (I used Earth Custodianship and X-something-Eliminators in most of the games, just to make sure there was at least one machine empire on the map)
2. Use the "observe" command to enter the observer mode and check Contacts to make sure there's a couple of Machine Empires to observe
3. Set the speed to fastest and periodically (I did it every 10-15 years) possess various machine empires to see if they have built any armies

4: Attaching 3 saves from my latest test (2200, 2217 and 2230).

By 2230 you can see that most organic empires have armies but none of the 3 machines (not counting the Fallen Custodians) have produced any armies at all beyond the homeworld garrison they spawned with (2200.01.01 save is included if you need to verify the initial conditions)

Yeah, I've observed exactly the same thing and came to this forum to see if I'm the only one. This seems indeed to be a massive bug.
It was the same in 1.8.0 btw.

Edit: Devouring swarms which are controlled by the AI also seem to be incapable of building armies.

Its changing a Little in 1.8.1 now it seems. I have seen a pamperer Building defence armies in some of ist planets (but some other still were deserted). It must have built them, because they were on colonized or conquered planets. But attack armies are still not build.

Synthetic ascended Empires dont build defence armies (they do only, if there is still a biological Pop on the planet) but build robo attack armies. So thats the exact opposite.

I looked in the Country_type file, which says the ai, which armies to build and found this: min_assault_armies_for_wars = 6
Does that mean, that this even Counts for machine Empires? They Need at least 6 assault armies until they build other armies? But because they never can have assault armies they never built attack armies?

(Its fixed in 1.8.2, if i look in the patchnotes. So i probably then can have finally working machine Empires in my multiplayer games. At the Moment i cant even Switch Bach and forth between 1.8.1 beta and 1.8.0 (i do that, if i dont find someone who lets me hotjoin in 1.8.1) because it then ever pauses the download and says i have no rights to Change the files..... Only uninstall and reinstall works and i dont want ever, if i want to Switch versions uninstall and reinstall the whole game.)
