Yeah but it's even more liekely to change than other stuff. They regularly look at statistics, and if I remember well, space elves (and more generally humanoid portraits) were the most used of all portraits. Releasing more "alien" alien portraits without including something people are asking for (either more humanoids, or one of the popular things like robotic variations) would be a bad move.

Now, I would love if they focused on bringing more variety to existing portraits, either on the basic level, or when you have subspecies or cyborgs. It would also be really cool if different pops from different planets developped different visual cultures (wearing different kinds of things depending on the climate of the planet they live on, for example).

I agree that they should make more rubber foreheads and that their plans may change and I hope they do. The point of my quotation of Wiz was that that was the last time I saw a dev talk at all about future portrait plans, and that he did infer that they would have a modus operandi going forward. Other posters had previously offered skepticism that there would be more portraits.

Arthropoid #14 is the Nova and Galaxy Edition bonus. Meh. I want MOAR. Hopefully ones that wear clothes though.

I'm not saying don't make cuties or if they should be in DLC or patch or whatever. I totally understand other people being absolutely delighted with them. Which is why I love that there the mod community has created so many mods, covering so many possible player preferences. More the better. But what I want is creepies.

Also, I enjoy every time them make nods to other works of fiction, like the flying monkeys, the vulcans/space elves, klingons, Humanoid #4 is clearly a nod to the Fifth Element, Molluscoid #2 is a nod to the Goa'uld from Stargate. So more of that is welcome.

Also, phenotypes that border on the more common phenotypes. This is outer space. The evolutionary paths of other planets could have taken all sort of drastically different paths than ours. So when I see a creature that doesn't fit into the normal orthodoxy, it feels appropriate to me. Like Mammalian #16 and #17 could be analogues to Platypuses and Echidnas, the only egg-laying mammals on earth. Or how Avian #9 and #13 could be analogues to Archaeopteryx, the evolutionary link between dinosaurs and birds.

Personally, although i like the nods and references and keep them in, would appreciate original portraits, but thats just me. :)

Other people have stated this issue before, but I really would like to see more variety of the existing portraits. Particularly when your own species starts to "enhance" itself. It is quite impossible to tell them apart from one another, since they are using the exact same portrait. Sorry for my beautiful english.

Personally I hope that Utopia includes alternate portraits for all existing portraits to show the progression through the ascension paths although I can understand if Paradox puts them in a separate DLC.

Otherwise we are missing fish and other aquatic species.

I am also very much in favor of portraits showing ascension!

I Would also really like more ship models since they are currently very few and starting to feel repetitive to a much larger extent than the portraits do. But even if not, the addition of color variation will go a long way so I am excited.

What I would also like are more uniforms with the option to choose your standard pop uniforms. I would like to play a game with more than one human civilization and think that would be a good tool to avoid confusion about the pop identity. This would also help to keep gen-modded sub species apart.

I feel that we need more aliens that look like earth things. Compare Stellaris' reptilian "snakemen" to the snake people in XCOM for example. Hell, look at every XCOM race, they do a good job of making iconic enemies. Even if our snakeman was literally just a cobra in a bow tie, that would be cool. I mean, look how popular the foxes are.

I also feel like this was part of the problem with Plantoids, the reason that it's poorly regarded. The price (for pure aesthetics) is a downside in general, and tossing in a "photosynthetic" and/or "rooted" trait would be nice. But worse, the aliens in it all look the same as all the other aliens. Nothing to suggest that they're from an entirely different kingdom. I mean, there's a venus flytrap, that's cool. But the rest? More of the same. When there could have been a race that combines the Giving Tree with Grandma Willow with those trees from Avatar. There could have been a dude made of vines with a great big lily for a face. There could have been so much more evocative stuff than there is. And you can look at every phenotype except maybe Mammalians and there's like a dozen cool things you can come up with. Sure, we have foxes and snails and elves, but what else have we got?

I'd personally prefer more variety for existing portraits instead of adding dozens of new ones with only slight color variation between individuals. Only humans and space elves are somewhat distinguishable right now.

I'm not sure which one you are referring to, none of them look like snake to me.

The price (for pure aesthetics) is a downside in general, and tossing in a "photosynthetic" and/or "rooted" trait would be nice.
That's becouse it's a species pack, it by definition does not add gameplay.
Besides, adding such traits would be in conflict with the design decision that portrait's don't affect gameplay,
also, traits currently (with the exception of decadent) don't describe facts about species but it's characteristics.

Nothing to suggest that they're from an entirely different kingdom.
Becouse you can not be literally just an inteligent tree and build a spacefaring civilization with your brethren.
They do look vaguely humanoid for the same reason all other species look vaguely humanoid.

And you can look at every phenotype except maybe Mammalians and there's like a dozen cool things you can come up with. Sure, we have foxes and snails and elves, but what else have we got?
Do you really want more space-(earth species) or space-(species from mithology)?
What I really love about stellaris is that so many species are it's own thing, instead of being references to things that already exist.

Repitilian Normal #9 can be referred to as "snakeoid". They don't look like snake people to me either.

That definition isn't inherent though, it was decided upon.
Besides, adding such traits would be in conflict with the design decision that portrait's don't affect gameplay,
also, traits currently (with the exception of decadent) don't describe facts about species but it's characteristics.
Adding such traits as inherent to the phenotype would be in conflict. Including such traits in the DLC would not be. I think in your final sentence you've made some error in translating from your native language, since in English the only way for something to not be a fact is if it's not correct, and both possibilities I mentioned are characteristics.

Becouse you can not be literally just an inteligent tree and build a spacefaring civilization with your brethren.
They do look vaguely humanoid for the same reason all other species look vaguely humanoid.
There isn't any actual reason for that. If you look at things from a perspective of hard sci-fi, things are way more human-like than makes sense. Trees with advanced societies make sense as soon as you take as given that there are trees which can communicate (already true on earth) and trees with high intelligence (not true on earth but common in fiction) and some kind of ability to mechanically manipulate their surroundings (also common in fiction). And once you've got advanced societies, the Stellaris conceit is that space flight is inevitable if nothing kills them all first. And, indeed, there's no particular reason that being largely sedentary would prevent a species from attaining advanced technology, even if "manned" flights might come later on.

Do you really want more space-(earth species) or space-(species from mithology)?
What I really love about stellaris is that so many species are it's own thing, instead of being references to things that already exist.
I do. Too much of what we've already got boils down to "gribbly alien git". It's not evocative. One of Stellaris' problems is that empires don't feel as distinct from each other as they might. Part of that is because, unlike Paradox's other games, geography isn't very clear-cut or complicated. Another is that nations aren't based on historical states that we know the history of. But one advantage Stellaris has over the other games is species, and making species portraits evocative and memorable is a step to improve the situation that won't rely on mechanical changes, or the vast amount of busywork that (for example) making different ethos combinations show up more in dialogue would.

Usually artists make portraits when the other parts are done. Given that all art for the new features are not done yet they likely dont know if they have time to make new art yet.

A development team is several groups works in tandem on different things. Artists typically finish earlier than coders but not always. Cosmetic dlc is a way to keep them busy while the other teams finish up but they wont delay a major expansion just for new portraits if art is last. I guess if coders finished first they would spend (more) time on optimization and AI improvements while waiting on art.

Whats memorable about space versions of animals we have already seen before? Sure they can look cool and i dont mind them, persay. But I dont remember them as much as the Fungoid 17 (my profile picture), the long necked reptiles where if you look closely you can see their spine, the fungoids with the giant heads, those kind of aliens. They stand out to be much more memorable than just, space crab, or space cat, or space boar. The art team can work with and make cooler stuff out of things that arent tied down to earth, for example the reptillian with the visible spine. They can give them more memorable features like that. Granted, animal based portraits can be interesting. The mushroom people and the arthropoid that looks sorta like an olm are memorable because they are just so different from the rest, but come on.

This just looks like a guy in a fursuit.

Myself, I really like the wide spectrum of alieness. that the Stellaris species range from rubber foreheads through anthropomorphic animals and animals with a twist (I really love the one that's just a normal parrot stuffed in an old school scifi space suit) to those that are far more alien. A lot of the lizards are a bit underwhelming though, but I can't really point to why and that's a bit beside the point.

That one's a bit odd because it's wrenched into the stature needed for the clothing. But still, "piggy" is easier for most people to remember, not in the sense of "wow this is a memorable race" but in the sense of "who's that empire again?". Things that are weird are cool too, but right now there's a lot of aliens that are "weird" in very similar ways, so they all kinda blend together. The "cuties" suite of portraits does do a good job of avoiding that, but a lot of portraits (especially the ones with clothes, now that I think of it) really don't have interesting designs. Of the ones that stand out, it's not a coincidence that many are based more on real things.

Yeah, variety is good. I would probably love that parrot if it had better colors. Instead of green, green, blue, black, red, and white, why not green-winged macaw, blue and gold macaw, eclectus, sun conure, nanday conure, rainbow lorikeet, and, let's say, rose-breasted cockatoo? Is that harder? Barely! Just paint a couple colors on the layer you've got set to color it instead of doing it solid-color.

I'd love a "Cuties Pack" style expansion to birds. Songbirds, show-chickens, maybe something ala the Butterfly that's basically just a really big and slightly weird bird flapping in place.

I know it' dull but if we're gonna have cybernetic and spiritual ascension, then probably those portraits are most likely. Though I'd rather see some more original stuff myself. As weird as possible preferably, but I'm not opposed to some more animal themes at all, it's really our only reference point we have in this
universe after all. I'm even equally okay with more anthros, cuties and rubber foreheads in the future so longas they ddon't become the norm. What would be really cool regarding any future humanoids, is invoking the
uncanny valley affect, though that
may be heard given the races are 2D.
I'd love it if it can be done however.

Also: we need space olms.
