Could anybody explain this so that Noobs like me understand what will happen? Were combat modifiers broken and if yes, do they work now? If that was the case, nations like Prussia, Japan and Poland should become a lot more powerful, right? Help, I have no idea about combat mechanics.

This sounds promising.

- There is now damage on morale on units in the backline during a landcombat.
Will this include reserve troops, such as in mountain battles where the combat width is significantly lower than the number of soldiers waiting to be cycled in? Or is it just the artillery troops in the back row that are actually in the battle during the combat phase?

So the problem was that ideas that gave you +infantry ability or +cavalry ability modified your weapon modifier. But if you had the same tech level as your opponent, it had very little effect. So, yes, this should make Prussia, Japan and Poland stronger.

I think this is the sentence that deals with that issue.

Maybe Combat Ability, but Discipline is supposed to enhance defense (according to the tooltips, anyway) and it currently does not.

Back row damage makes artillery more useful?

I suspect what it means is that you can no longer rely on just one row of artillery. So what usually happened in the game currently is that your artillery in the back row is invulnerable, it doesn't take damage until your front line infantry and cavalry are broken. So there was never any point to having more artillery than your combat width. Now that it takes morale damage, you'll probably need more of it. It also avoids the inevitable end of close battles where you ended up with artillery units fighting each other on the front line after all the infantry and cavalry are done.

Although probably the change mostly means battles will be shorter.

Cool, I hope cavalry can kick some ice now compared to the previously invincible artillery.

I suspect artillery will still be mostly (strengthwise) invulnerable, it'll just run away faster.

Line one is music to my ears! However if we do that why is line 2 neccesary?

Is this another double fix that's going to bite us in the arse like the defensive fix?

Of course it will!

Or the things these changes break will be changed. Law of unintended consequences in game development. 1 tweak = 10 unintended consequences. Paradox just cranks this to 11 by implementing 10 tweaks to the same system at the same time.
