Well if you play with counters you see every detail about your enemy forces on your border so that is no answear. Just a cheap excuse.

Sorry, but you are wrong about that. Here is the difference.

With sprites you are able to see the exact model your enemy has if the sprite changes with every model fx. tanks as it has been asked so many times by those requesting more sprites.

The only difference shown between sprites and counters is that you can see that there are other types of "infantry" there in counter mode. You still cannot determine the model of the enemy.

therefore the point of keeping sprites as they are for Fog of War purposes is quite valid.

here's the post about sprites.

It looks nice.

But why did Paradox not just sell the concept of the game on empty CD and let modders do the rest?

p.s. when I say basic sprites I am NOT talking about special sprite for every specific model or tech stage. Only that motorized inf. does not look like normal inf. and a bomber does not look like a fighter. Just like with the counters.

Even better. They could just remove the sprites altogether. They don't belong in a wargame.

I wouldn't go as far as Bluesman here, but he does have a point, this game isn't about sprites, it's about grand strategy, and i'd much rather have Paradox dedicating their time to making a bug free, balanced and challenging game (which it is) rather than making lots of pretty little sprites...

I'm not going to speculate why PI didnt do more sprites, but I think Ghost_dk said it all.

You want the motorized sprite? Then use HOI 1 sprites. They are compatible you know. I have motorized and mechanized sprites in the game. I downloaded the alltime spritepack from the Stony Road forum and extracted those I wanted to use.

If you can wait the modders will do more and better sprites.

Well. There's really two reasons I would want to see them go.

1) The above mentioned

2) Given time/resources to work on either a) AI/Features b) "Cool" graphics. Which would be preferable? I personally prefer them to work on a). It's better that Paradox focuses on that new engine for the graphics fantasts.

Maybe they dont belong in your wargame but they belong in mine ;p

Thats why Paradox was smart enough to have both, thank god they are not so narrow minded as some of the folks here.

The modding community will be getting the sprites out never fear, making them is time consuming which I bet is a big part of the reason we dont have an "official" sprite expasnion. In the email I recieved originaly when I wrote to
Paradox is that the sprites were limited for the reason of "ease of use" and nothing else. So Im sure the actual reasons for the lack of sprites include all these reasons to varying degrees.

Btw the original HOI sprites work fine in HOI2, including the ones released as mods, they are half the size and detail of whats possible with HOI2 though, so you can use those for now while you wait for the nicer ones to follow.

Yeah it would be nice to have better sprites, but you have to give Paradox credit for understanding that the modding community is going to get the sprites done.

Much rather see AI and game play enhancements from the programmers then sprites. Float over to Stony's place he ought to have a fantastic sprite download soon enough. The fact he chooses to do it is all the better for Paradox and for us.

I don't care either way, sprites or counters means little to my game play.

What I do care about is this wasted b*tching about things everytime an enhancement comes out. Some of you have had a chance to play with the enhancement but it hsa not been out long enough for all of us to play...so would it be possible to not download and install the latest enhancement and then go rushing off to see what you don't like? Try enjoying the game for what it is. Want a game that will meet all of your requirements? go get a degree in game design and hire some devs and make one. Otherwise keep in mind that there are thousands of other players that PI is trying to make happy and the only way to do that is to make decisions about game design and then release the game. issue enhancements to fix bugs or majority demands for changes and then please let them go on to other games.

Man some of you act like PI is your own personal little game company. there are no sprites from PI cause they (as they stated) are not making them. None in 1.2 nor will there be any in 1.3 or higher so LET IT GO. go play HOI2 that is what this should be about not this gimme gimme bull shit.

I don't have to tell you that in a few weeks, the graphic forum of stonyroad.de will be filled with sprites, usually much better than what Paradox could have done (at least, this is what happened with HoI1).

I don't think it would be a stretch to say that in addition to any other reasons, we all know that PI's art department is not very large and they have a new game scheduled for release in about 6-9 months' time (Q4 of this year). Persumably most/all of the graphics department's time is taken up by -- and more gainfully (i.e. profitably) employed on -- that project.

I want to expand a little on what RCBricker said: When I bought Korsun Pocket, I was severely disappointed in Matrix Games since their copy protection prevented me from playing their highly rated game. I had the latest hardware, but I could not play it without finding a patch to remove the copy protection.

Then this game come out. I buy it and it works! Nothing to get in the way of my enjoyment. For this one reason alone I am happy with PI. Modders can mod it and nothing breaks. I can add mp3 files of my choosing if I want, etc.

Guess which company I will buy future wargames from? It ain't Matrix Games, that's for sure.

Sprites are for wimps - real war-gamers use counters... JK :)

But I find it amusing that most people claim they don't care about graphics in games like these but the loudest whiniest group here just cries about sprites all the time..

What burns me the most is that there are certain posters out there who post in such a fashion as to insinuate that Joe Poster who comes to the Paradox Forums to find some answers to his game-related questions should be totally hip to those questions that have been asked in the forums previously, as well as hip to the whole Paradox "mod scene" -- this despite the fact that there was a time, not so long ago even, when the expectation that the player community would provide all of the features and gameplay improvements that the core development team didn't get around to (for whatever reason) would have been considered utterly ridiculous.

There are several very kind individuals who advise posters regarding mods and previous useful discussions (providing links, pertinent information etc.), and then there are those who write rude posts that insult those who are not aware of the mod community, or are not otherwise already entirely savvy with the Paradox Forum scene.

Those who fit into this latter category do a disservice to both the individuals who come here for help, and to Paradox Interactive, which risks the alienation of those individuals who have come to "Paradox Interactive Forums" only to be militantly accosted by certain posters who, regardless of the fact that they do not represent Paradox Interactive, nonetheless are quite capable of discouraging newbies and casual posters from continuing to participate in this community -- which is bad, to be sure, since the Paradox Community can greatly enhance one's gaming experience (with the various available mods, knowledgeable posters, etc.).

I'd like to think that the forum moderators would take a more active role in encouraging politeness in these forums (which is entirely missing from several of the posts in this very thread), but I am not sure that this is going to occur. In any event -- shame on the rude posters on these forums who, instead of exercising social skills that are quite simple to use, choose instead to engage in combative, unhelpful language.

Indeed. Posts that are the equivalent to "Quit your whining" are not very effective or emotionally boosting.

I'm thinking we have a record here. 3 or 4 Mod posts in the SAME thread!!! Only God's (Or Johan's) hand could've brought about such an unholy event ;)

As for sprites. Meh. I can tell it's a tank. It's a tank. I lub my tanks. They don't look like infantry. My tanks do not have two leg's. They don't carry guns. And they certainly don't 'walk'. I couldn't tell the difference between a Tiger Tank and a Panzer (Insert Number) anyways. So if I can't tell the difference between them in real life, then I definately don't want my enemies being able to tell the difference between them in game :D

The only sprite I want is a tiny Hitler doing his jig at Compeigny when Paris falls......or a laughing Stalin head during the purges.
But seriously, the game runs on my laptop and I don't even need to have the CD in. As mentioned, there's no convoluted copy protection jazz. Stuff gets patched, questions get answered. All in all, I'm pretty satisfied.

REAL wargamers use a dirty map, two colored pencils (sharpened with your teeth), and a frayed piece of string.

Only that.
