There appears to be a problem with the localization to english for these items. Specifically, they appear to be mixed up when comparing the "technologies" effects with the names they are given in the Combat window. Let's first define them.

Effect 1: The malus applied to ground units based on enemy air superiority (lower defense and slower movement). In the combat window this is called "air superiority" (see below)

However, the doctrinal tech that affects this statistic in the technology tree is known as "army_bonus_air_superiority_factor" in the code. Looking to the Localization files this shows up as....
77epbW8.png

which is why when you look up doctrines that boost this effect it shows up as:

Tqbtt3r.png

As if calling this effect two different names in two different places wasn't confusing enough, there is another effect which is refered to as "Air Support" on the combat window.

Effect 2: The bonus provided to friendly units when friendly air units on Close Air Support missions are partipating in battle:

However, the code that alters this number is "air_cas_present_factor", which can be found on, among others, the "Direct Ground Support" doctrine option:

So, to sum up:

Effect 1 is called "Air Support" on the doctrine menu but "Air Superiority" on the combat window.
Effect 2 is called "Ground Support" on the doctrine menu but "Air Support" on the combat window.

This has lead to a significant amount of confusion about what all these effects actually do. My suggestion for naming convention is as follows:

Effect 1 should be called "Air Interdiction" (since that's what it actually does, slow enemies and lower their defense).
Effect 2 should be called "Air Support" to indicate that it's a bonus to friendly ground units (providing support from the air).

This is an excellent observation. What strengthens this post greatly is that it is accompanied by reasonable suggestions.

It appears that the Air Doctrine descriptors (and perhaps Land and Naval Doctrines, too) deserve closer scrutiny. It may well be that there was a rush to complete the copy that accompanied doctrines.

Here is another incidence of an Air Doctrine description that would improve with editing:

(acknowledged: this is the bug report thread and not the open forum or suggestion forum. I'll save further discussions for the more appropriate venue. The OP was on-target and I look forward to similar good postings. )

@Bridger15, Keep up the good work!

Effect 1 should be called "Air Interdiction" (since that's what it actually does, slow enemies and lower their defense).

"Interdiction" = Great word, given that it differs so much from the word "support." Using the phrase "Air interdiction" might help lessen confusion that arises with the variety of "support" game mechanics. As posted elsewhere,
  • Air Support = Air Interdiction increases the penalty enemy land divisions get from you having air superiority.
  • Close Air Support = in HoI4, it is an airplane. It appears that "Close Air Support" is a prepositional phrase to describe a type of airplane. Wikipedia has further definitions.
  • Ground Support = an attack bonus given to friendly ground forces that are fighting an enemy in an area where the friendly faction has air superiority
  • Support Attack = a finger tango of CTL+ALT+Right click [target] that allows friendly ground forces to attack an enemy unit, but not move into the hex

As mentioned above: Air interdiction (AI), also known as deep air support (DAS), is the use of preventative aircraft attacks against enemy targets, that are not an immediate threat, in order to delay, disrupt, or hinder later enemy engagement of friendly forces. -- Wikipedia
