Have you seen this?

I have, though at this moment I am fully immersed in completing stuff for the upcomming update and DLC (though most of the AI work will of course be in the free update.)
However, since 1.2.1 there has been effort put into improving the AI template designer (including a couple of bug fixes) that should significantly improve on this. A lot of the scripting has been offloaded to another developer here while I have focused on the code.
The results appear promising :)

It should be doing the same check for production/switching as for updating design, and was at least doing as much when last I worked on it. The value target_min_match in the design scripts should ensure that it does not jump to the next template willy nilly after having come close enough to the current one (effectively promoting itself to incompetence.)

I think what you describe is an unintended sideffect of the target template weight. As the intention of that value is to provide balance when comparing to the stats, it should be possible to fix this by having very similar weights for the different templates.

Thanks for the heads up. I will have a chat with the others involved and see what can be done.
