After long time (since "Art of War"), developers again pay attention to the Russian region.
In the first 1.16 dev diary was represented a map with new borders and a couple of new provinces. It was good, but on closer examination there is not much changed.

Then I took on the responsibility to improve this map a little.

The red dot on the map is the approximate position of the province capital. Number is the item from the list below.

1. Velikiye Luki (rus.: Великие Луки).
Located exactly where now the in-game Kholm. Strategic fortress to protect from Lithuania, also played important role during Livonian War.
In 1444 belongs to Novgorod. The province can be called just "Luki" with a capital "Velikiye Luki".

2. Kholm (rus.: Холм).
Already on the map, but its capital should be up north by the Lovat river.
Campaigns_of_Stefan_Batory.svg
3. Vyazma (rus.: Вязьма)
Big town on the trade route from Moscow to Europe. Due to its location was part of the claims of Lithuania and Moscow.
Later town was fortified against Commonwealth raids.
In 1444 belongs to Lithuania.

4. Rostov (rus.: Ростов).
One of the oldest Russian cities, important religion and craft center. Had significant fortifications.
In 1444 belongs to Moscow.

5. Totma (rus.: Тотьма)
Located between Vologda and Ustyug. In the game timeline, one of the most prosperous towns of the Russian North, due to the trade and to the salt production.
In 1444 belongs to Moscow.

Additional changes in Russian region:

1. Pronsk (rus.: Пронск)
Prospeuros city, that along with Pereslavl-Ryazansky was one of most important center of Ryazan principality.
In 1444 belongs to Ryazan.

2. Yelets (rus.: Елец)
Rename province instead of Lipetsk that was founded in 1703. Border town, not once exposed to the raids of nomads. Timur sacked it in 1395, and the tatars devastated it in 1414, but town always rebuilt. In 1595 become a fortress.
In 1444 belongs to Golden Horde, but there must be russian (or ryazanian ;)) culture and a core of Ryazan.

3. Kashin (rus.: Кашин)
Significant trade and craft center of the Tver principality. The city minted its own coins, was famous for its dyes.
In 1444 belongs to Tver.

4. Ustyuzhna (rus.: Устюжна)
One of most important center (along with Tula) of iron processing and gun smithing in Russia. Another name of the city is Iron Ustyug (Железный Устюг).
In 1444 belongs to Moscow.

These cities on the map:

If anyone wants to, it can look for these cities on the Mercator map. ;)
(Another good map of the Eastern Europe)

I believe that these changes of the Russian region will make the map a bit detailed and nice. And devs will not need to come back to this later.

Interesting. do you know the names of the two Rostovs in that period?

Rostov-Sretensky and Rostov-Borisoglebsky. The former was the part sold in 1425, the latter was sold in 1474. I'm getting this from http://rusmania.com/central/yaroslavl-region/rostov-veliky/history/ which is about the only site I can find in English with decent information on the principality, although certain things, like the date the first half was sold, I've gleaned from genealogy websites.

Thanks for the source. It seems like the principality split in 1328, and to the best of my knowledge not even M&T has acknowledged it, despite the level of detail they go in for. At the very most this Rostov-Borisoglebsky would be a vassal of Muscovy, but does it really deserve a new TAG?

As I wrote above, the addition of a fourth vassal of Moscow not too good for diplomatic relations.

Does anyone know anything about the new country in Russia? If I'm reading it correctly, the province name is "Oka", referring to the river.... My theory is that it represents the fractured principalities following the collapse of Principality of Smolensk.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Upper_Oka_Principalities
Yep, devs unite several small principalities into one. According to city's position on the map, it most likely Belev/Belyov. At the beginning of the game, it formally dependent on Lithuania, so most likely it will be a Lithuanian vassal. In 1494 regained by Russia.

And a little more about "position on the map". I studied the map and came to conclusion that some of the cities placed aren't where they should.
8d538e6c59260189454d326a33aafcdd.jpg
1. Tula should be relocated to north-west from current position.
2. Vladimir should be farther to east.
3. Suzdal' should be much closer to Vladimir, above it.
4. Galich. Most strange relocation. In current game version, it located on its proper place.
6cf8234aefd08d2e7279affe9ce16d39.jpg

Galich should be in the middle between Sukhona and Volga rivers. But in 1.16 Galich relocated to another place. Why change right position to wrong? What sense in it?
All of this can be checked on the map which i posted in previous message.

After some break I would like to propose additional changes for the map of Russian region. Let's start with the Ryazan.
In addition to Tula and Ryazan, in this principality there were other important cities.

1. Pronsk (rus.: Пронск)

Well researched, again. Lipetsk to Yelets is the best suggestion, from my point of view as it doesn't mean adding an extra province to get it. I think at least some of these extra provinces could be added by merging out the anachronistic ones, for instance Alatyr into Murom. How would you deal with Tambov?

Thanks.
A new province (Pronsk) is needed to show the Ryazan Principality significant force in the region. Even princes of Moscow tried not to fight it directly. Ryazan was the last principality merged with Moscow in 1521. But in-game Ryazan is too weak.
Pronsk was long competed with Pereslavl-Ryazansky for the title of the most important center of principality. It was a really important city for that region.

As for Tambov, I haven't found a suitable settlement in the area, for now. If you have any suggestion I'd be glad to hear it.
Alatyr can be replaced with Kourmysh. It has a suitable boundary (dotted line on the map).
