Hello! I'm currently making a run for "Georgia on my Mind" achievement. Basiaclly Caucasian region has been one of my most favorite places in EU4 since 1.8 map update due to:
  • Very hard and luck-based start
  • Tough and very strong neighbors that can be taken down only with strong allies.
  • Secluded position to spectate European wars without being involved in most of them.
  • Lots of provinces, 3 minors (assuming you are playing one) to conquer.

In 1.8-1.11 patches it was quite possible to play Caucasian nation and stay relatively medium-sized and be quite strong. You just needed Economic, Administrative, Trade and Quantity ideas to build every production, manpower or taxation building you could, especially manufactures. Total income from wine, copper, iron, spices, dyes and silk (assuming you took most of QQ's territory) was quite high, while resisting Ottomans, Russia and Persia/Timmies tricky but really fun.

Nowadays Caucasian provinces are still dirt-poor, low on manpower and on production. Mountain regions are among the most expensive to develop, meaning that even if you get some free gold to spend, you won't have much slots to build in. Province density is high, but provinces are poor, meaning that you need 4 forts to cover your lands more or less properly, while you can barely maintain one or 2 forts. I'm not even talking about how hard it is to wipe rebels that have occupied mountain provinces. Caucasus needs a solid source of income, which might happen to be a gold mine (like it was pre-1.8) or even two.

Another problem lies in below-average Caucasian NIs and horrible (maybe even among the worst) Georgian Ideas (Circassian NIs are quite fine ATM) that almost don't help you to survive. IMHO, Caucasian nations should have some discounts on buildings, development and some quality-based military ideas in their NI sets if they are to survive hordes onslaught (I'm not even talking about Ottomans and Russia) here.

BTW, Imereti still has generic NIs, which isn't that bad, comparing to other Caucasian states ideas.

For Georgia I would propose such a set of ideas:

Traditions:
  • Morale of armies +10%
  • Hostile Core Creation +50%

Ideas:
Core Creation cost -20% (to reduce penalties for coring other Caucasian provinces)
  • Missionary strength +1%
  • Build Cost -15%
  • Manpower recovery speed +20%
    National Manpower Modifier +10%
  • Diplomatic Reputation +1
  • Fort defense +20%
  • Production Efficiency +15%
  • Discipline +5%

Ambition:
  • Development cost -20%

This is a very solid idea set that seems to be quite OP, but when you look at surrounding hordes they won't look that OP anymore. Same ideas may be suggested for Imereti.

A bit offtopic but I found Georgia on my mind easier if you don't actually start as Georgia. Funny, but I got it as Inca on my Sun God run in 1.11. South american Georgia is then part of the main achievement, north american one wasn't hard, just win a war vs colonial nation, and caucasian Georgia - well, I just waited for max adm. efficiency and vassalized it in 1 go, diploannexed after 10 years. Was a bit lucky it actually survived that far though, Ottomans would be hard to fight against with my powerbase all the way back in Andes.

I'm currently trying to build a tall colonial empire by reaching Persian Gulf and colonizing Malay, Australia and Pacific Ocean before Europeans.

Nope. It shouldn't be OP in ANY case. It should be balanced and has historical basis.

Remove core creation cost reduction - Georgia wasn't great conqueror.

Manpower recovery speed to +10%, manpower modifier to +20%.

Fort defense should be changed to fort maintenance and stey at same level.

Prod efficiency is too damn high. 15%? Really? I think it can be changed to some filler like +1 attrition, cause ideas are already military focused.

The country has interesting history, but bad position. And, well, it wasn't rich. It SHOULD take an effort to compete with big guys.

Even though I rank Orthodoxy as top-1 among Christian religions due to superpowerful Patriarch Authority bonuses, the drawback (-33% tax income with 100 PA) completely kills an almost non-existing tax income from 1-3 BT provinces, making ducats starvation even higher.

I was trying to compensate ultralow tax income with production income instead, encouraging players to focus on production.

Playing a Trebizond campaign - I do think that Caucasus is an extremely hostile region to play in.

I actually think that with the patch changes that there's a reasonable argument for Circassia being the most difficult start in Europe right now (not even an OPM, but highest chance of DOW from Crimea / GH, and worst diplomatic situation out of the 4 orthodox states).

And yeah, I know about the Russian vassals, but with Muscovy falling even from their 1.11 state and the power of support independence I think that there are harder European starts out there.

PS I wouldn't call Georgia idea set bad, it is heavily backloaded that is true (20% inf cost and dip rep are very nice stuff, as is 20% MRS). unfortunately Georgia is a start that really needs frontloaded power to get going.

I'm kinda OK with hard and luck-based start, but the provinces are so damn poor that maintaining even 3 mothballed forts is a pain =\ your manpower burns like gasoline when you destroy rebels in mountains, while Ottomans, Timurids or Persia, Poland-Lithauania and Muscovy/Russia gain power.
One possible way is to give Georgia a solid chance to grow tall, IMHO.

Others have reported on this but the PA events don't happen nearly as often as they used to. I am close to 1600s and only had three events fire.

I fixed my money issues by ganking Shirvan ASAP - Persia node is very rich, the estuary will make you trade 0.3 ducats/month, and with Tabriz, Mazandaran under your control you can make 5+ ducats a month off that node alone. Of course, getting there is not trivial...

Try doing it without CS, it's probably easier.

Also, you can expand into horde territory when they're fighting each other, thus gaining large amounts of non-mountain land.

Have the same trouble: it's 1550's and PA has fired only twice. Still manpower boost in exchange for tax income lets you hire much less mercs. Tabarestan is my next target.

Try doing it without CS, it's probably easier.

Also, you can expand into horde territory when they're fighting each other, thus gaining large amounts of non-mountain land.

Horde territories are a good direction to expand, but you will have to build a lot of forts there. Another drawback is relations penalty with Muscovy that wants those territories badly.

Youre missing descriptions, you know the text that tells you what it is, not just the title.

Do you want to use this sample in your mods? (then I'll add descriptions)
Otherwise I really doubt devs would even look at this thread.
I can't say much about the ideas, but I agree Georgia (and Armenia for that matter) should at least get Fort Defense.
or Fort Maintenance discounts for sure

My second serious try:
Rivals: Muscovy, Ottomans, Persia
Allies: Novgorod, Poland, Lithuania
Vassals: Astrakhan (love their color)
Idea sets: Exploration (6), Expansion (4)

Got very lucky with Ottos fighting vs half of Europe when Crimea attacked Genoa and initially Muscovy and Poland+Lithuania have been my allies until Poland lost their union and Muscovy had drained manpower in my wars.

As you can see, I got fertile Iraq lands, but still no way I can even dream of building anything (most forts were built by AI).
I have no intentions to expand further except for trade companies (gonna westernize soon).

As you can see, 411 development is a lot, but it's not enough to maintain my armies, forts and colonies.

Giving proofs about Caucasian gold mines:
So, even adding a single gold mine could improve overall value of Caucasus region immensely, because for now this region is completely worthless in terms of BT, production and manpower.
BTW before AOW there was a gold mine in Circassia (if I recall correctly), making hordes fight for it's control.
