Thank you for your report.

Not technically a bug, but it's something that we're considering to change. At the moment, "upgrade" upgrades to the most recent design of the correct class (size)

Similar problem, but this is weird.

V1.0.3 - I had 3 cruisers, one flagged as auto-best and two others with different configurations, such as adding a disruptor. One of those had a higher damage over the auto-best.

Went to v1.1 and needed to upgrade. Checked through the settings and made a couple of minor changes. Upgrade decided that all of the auto-best cruisers should be updated to the non-autobest with a higher damage. Went into the design for the auto-best, made a zero change (deleted and reinstated a shield) and saved it. Now there is no auto-best cruiser and they are upgrading to the latest version of themselves.

If the system can decide to change a ship from one design to another, what is the point of letting us create a different design only to get it changed automatically. We should be able to control or limit that change. The system should accept MY design for a ship unless I tell it to change it to a different one, and how would I do that over 140 ships in three fleets.

This is weird, it's definitely not how it was in 1.0, and I see this problem only with destroyers, not with corvettes. Are you sure it's WAD?

I need to have multiple types of ships in my fleet: laser ships, torpedo ships, PD ships, etc. If upgrade basically kills all diversity and makes all ships the same, it is a significant problem.

Does this mean that you can't have two different builds of the same ship size?

I'm going to need to test this now, because I usually create 2 battleships, one that does fleet repairs and one that uses the FTL inhibitor and stacks damage.

Are you sure? I think you may misunderstand what he means. The game auto-generates what is supposed to the best design. If I make a LESSER manual ship, it will STILL upgrade to the manually made one instead of the Auto-Best. In 1.0, the ships upgraded by name. So all of my Auto-Best ships would upgrade to the same name. This is not happening anymore. It is upgrading the Auto-Best ships all to ONE different type of manually made ship.

So if I have four designs, three manually made and one Auto-Best. If I have these in a fleet and upgrade them, the manually made ships will continue to upgrade by name of ship to the better designs. But the Auto-Best ships will AUTOMATICALLY turn into one particular ship the AI likes.

This can't be WAD.

Ah, bingo, looks like the change that was discussed a while back was partially (or bugged, not quite sure) carried through between 1.0 and 1.1 - and while the original post would fit with my understanding of how it was designed, your description certainly doesn't. Thank you for the clarification.
