Just elaborate a bit more, in addition to the pips I was also thinking that the stability mechanic could be tweaked to be a bit more (RPG like) because with the added stability knocking down an assault more then doubles do to the stability recovery increase and stabilizing, For Example Using a Stalker fitted with 4 Stock LRM20 you could only deal 180pts of stability damage in a single turn. You would then need another two other mechs, one to get the assault over the 200 and then another to force a knockdown. Even ignoring Stability recovery, I think that is a bit too much stability. To make this a bit more intresting, stability would need to be decreased (see below) the single strike knockdown would be removed, however to offset this once that threshold is passed, in a single attack, for every 10 points of additional stability damage, the player would need to roll against their piloting ability. So if hit an assault mech 4xLRM20+++ (+2stb.) I would generating 320 points of stability for knockdown. The first 160 would discarded and the remainder of the 160 stability would rolled against the piloting ability, and for every 10points over you get another roll to knockdown and they get another roll to save from a knockdown.
Adjusting the stability down for the above.
from
- Medium 'Mech stability increased to 130 (was 100). Stability recovery increased to 1.2 (was 1.0).
- Heavy 'Mech stability increased to 160 (was 100). Stability recovery increased to 1.4 (was 1.0).
- Assault 'Mech stability increased to 200 (was 100). Stability recovery increased to 1.6 (was 1.0).

or as someone else put it, start at 100 for 20 tones and then for every 5 tons add 5 points. (that would bump a 100ton mech to 180pts of stability BTW)
