Ok, I reported this in the bug forum: https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/foru...p-upgrade-changes-class.939547/#post-21309810

My destroyer during upgrade changed the class from "auto-designed" one to one that I manually designed.

The response from a Paradox employee is "Not technically a bug.. At the moment, "upgrade" upgrades to the most recent design of the correct class (size)"

I wonder if you guys noticed this too, and whether it's actually possible to keep diverse group of ships with this.

I've found that if I don't change the name, the ships upgrade properly.

For example, if I have a gun ship named DD: Gladius, I can upgrade it and as long the name remains the same, all of the earlier 'Gladius' DDs can upgrade to the new design (even if I have other DD designs).

If, however, I change the name (even versioning like Gladius II) then the DDs will upgrade to whatever design you have that it 'feels' is the most up-to-date/powerful regardless of what their original class was.

This. Create a design, give it a name, then start building them. Don't EVER change the name again. When you have new techs, update the design BUT DO NOT RENAME IT. All the old ships will upgrade to the design of THE SAME NAME that they were originally built with.

Ships only upgrade to "the most recent design" if you have renamed the template AFTER the ships were built. Don't.

Game just autoupgraded all my default "auto best" corvetes to one of designs I made. Name was different from default one and I havent deleted "auto best" corvete type from my ship designer. I have 4 corvete designs in ship designer.

No, I have ran into this bug as well. It used to work where you didn't change the name and everything is fine. Ships always upgraded to the design of the same name.

But not now. If I have Two classes of corvettes, one the AI builds and one I manually build for example. If I go to upgrade these Corvettes, they will ALL turn into the manually made Corvette. It has nothing to do with changing the name. The game is turning (And it does not do this all the time) Auto-Best ships into Manually made ships.

And I would say it is a bug because the Auto-Best ships are SUPPOSED to be the most high tech ships. So why are they changing into one (And only one the game chooses) manually built ship.

I don't think this is WAD.

Well, I stand corrected. Haven't run into it myself, but yes, it sounds like a newly-introduced bug.

I have not experienced it, but the picture I am creating from this thread is the following. People have manual designs, but when they have deleted old designs, the ships upgrade into a different manual design instead of the auto-best.

At a guess, it is because people kept complaining the fleet builder kept choosing the auto-best option instead of their manual option. So Paradox flipped it to the otherway around...

Obviously, you got people who actually want to upgrade from manual made to the lol-auto-best options (why even have that enabled?) in this thread, by the sounds of it.

Incorrect. The Auto-Best ships upgrade into a Manually made ship. So beginning of the game I have my Auto-Best ship and I make a Manually made ship.

So I get Blue Lasers. So my manually made ship is the Interceptor Section and has three S slots. The Auto Best is the Section with one M slot and one S slot.

I redesign my Manually made ship and DO NOT touch the name of the ship or delete everything. I am just overwriting the design.

Say I have three of each type of ship. When I go to upgrade these ships, they will ALL turn into the Manually made ship, even if it is a lesser design.

That is what is happening. No deleting ships, no changing names.. The AI picks a design and changes ALL Auto-Build ships into a Manual type it picks.

When I get home from work, I will post screenshots of what happens if I get a chance.. I made saves in front of every upgrade.

Incorrect....

Actually, I was correct because your description is what I was predicting what is occurring.

It isn't a bug, it was most likely a design decision, because the opposite kept happening to players. These players, like yourself now, complained about how their manually designed ships were turning into the autobest ship. (the opposite you are experiencing)

"the fix" would be to update your manual design before upgrading your ships. and steer away from the "auto-best", because it is rarely actually the best.

This. Create a design, give it a name, then start building them. Don't EVER change the name again. When you have new techs, update the design BUT DO NOT RENAME IT. All the old ships will upgrade to the design of THE SAME NAME that they were originally built with..

thats weak sauce. the game should ask you which design you want to upgrade.

Seriously, did you read what I posted. Because I gave an example of the game starting at the beginning. So how would I have deleted any designs? I deleted nothing. o_O

I never had ships turning into Auto-Ships. So no, incorrect. That is not what you said it was either. You were talking about deleting designs while I described something completely different.

Only if you are looking at the issue in a pedantic manner.

What I described actually fits the bill. But I was referring to the older bug where the deletion of manual designs led to auto-best being chosen instead of your other manual designs. This happened often when people used different designs, and they found it frustrating. As they would prefer their awesome-design to default to awesome-2nd-design, instead of auto-best.

From the sounds of the issue, Paradox made it so instead of defaulting to the auto-best, it will default to your manual design instead, to help alleviate this issue players were having.

Now, in your case scenario, you are discussing having manual-designs, as well as using auto-best. Which isn't the best style to do it, but it seems that this has caught you out as your auto-best designs are now defaulting to your manual designs.

Now arguably, in your situation, the auto-best class name doesn't change, but the auto-best doesn't actually function as a proper "design". Now, if it did function like that, your ships should simply auto-upgrade to the new auto-best design. However, I am guessing with the change, and its nature of auto-best, it was changed as they imagine it was easier for players to simply have their ships go to their custom design instead.

In essence, the change they did to allevate issues for players, has had the unintended effect in your situation.

ie: "yes, it is correct".

As the technology description says in Stellaris: "Think outside of the box, by thinking inside an even bigger box."

definitely a bug. It just "upgraded" all my auto-best battleships to my own design short range carriers, and jup they had different names.

If it is working as intended, give us at least an option to choose to wich designs wich class has to update to. Or just scrap the whole auto-best design all together.
