...however, I hadn't met anyone else yet, so the event looked a bit weird:
Stupidly, I forgot to screenshot what happened when I clicked the second button: basically, a diplomatic screen with no one home—a backdrop, but no one in the foreground—thanked me for returning my book and applied a modifier to an unspecified empire which may or may not actually exist.
This is probably not supposed to happen this way.
