If fighters, bombers or scouts... basically hangars equipped on a ship is present then PD will never fire on any missiles or torpedoes until the fighters are gone. It does not matter if those PD have any fighters near them to shoot at or not.

I have tested it quite extensively both using the vanilla game and while modding. It was fairly easy to spot when missile range was increased and ship speed reduced. Several volleys was fired before any fighters was in range, not a single missile or torpedo was engaged. As soon as all fighters are gone the PD start shooting at the missiles again.

This is ONLY true for the side that don't deploy fighters. If one side has fighters then the other will never engage missiles/torpedoes while the other side will. As I said, it does not matter of they have any fighters in range or not, as long as the fighters a present in the battle the PD will not fire on anything but fighters.

You can quite simply test this yourself.

From my modded version, but the same happen in vanilla version...

As you can see only the fighters will occasionally fire on the torpedoes but no PD. Basically every ship in this fight have some form of PD weapon.
