't Is a wonder that this game still gets improved/ modified.
Great news as I hadn't played EU 2 since the 1.08 patch which I personally found very good.
Don't know if 1.09 will be felt as an improvement on gameplay but I seem to notice that having (and keeping) vassals should now be more interesting than in the past.
Technology will proceed slower than before, thus be more realistic in the later years but it may make things harder to accomplish.
There's quite a lot in this patch compared to 1.08. I very miuch like how these Paradox games change, they are so alive : it is the same dish every time and yet a different flavour.

Great to see this fantastic game getting more attention. Still a lot of changes and balances for a 2 year old game. Good work.

I'll finish my current GC with Sweden before applying this new patch.

As usual there are things I do not understand.

Now this

"The effect off trade efficiency on merchant placement is now gradually applied instead of just a 50% bonus. "

Is anyone else sure what this means?

It appears to have to do with ws2_32:s recent experiments on the probability that a merchant takes an empty slot. In those tests he believed the program used integers for the TE influence on the success chance, in this case he proposed that 100% TE gave +1 to the formula and less than 100% gave +0. The exact formula was not known of course - well except for Johan :)

From that and from :
Code:
- Lowered base chance for merchant placement form 50% to 35%.
I understand that previously the chance of placing a merchant in an empty slot was 50% + 50% in certain cases, depending on TE. Is it when TE is above TE from CoT-owner, or some other way of determining the bonus, is not so important. The fact is there was either 50% success chance or 100% success.

Now, base chance is 35%, and it gets a bonus depending on TE, a variable bonus. The quest will now be to find the conditions of the bonus and the amount of it.

Nice! I didn't expect to see the adjacency of Karelia fixed :) And the extra trade competition is a good bonus as well.

Why didn't you expect that to be fixed. It was disturbing bug, that gave Russian player problems. Because you couldn't move your troops to defend your northern provinces against invasions, unless you got military access from Sweden or conquered Savolax. In my current AOE MP game it was problematic situation, because I was Russia and other player was Denmark who has diploannexed Sweden. So in order to get access to Karelia I would had to risk huge war just to get Savolax, which I didn't want. Now I don't have to go war against them and I can focus defeating Lithuania and Khanates.

Tack så mycket Johan. Du är bäst.

Personally I thought it was somehow related to inaccessible terrain or whatever. Like in HoI2 where you can´t cross Sahara.

It would have been weird, because Kola was important part of Muscowite empire in 17th century. Arkangelsk and Kola were quickly colonized, because after Russia lost connections to Baltic Sea, trade route via White Sea was important for Russia. They mostly sailed to Kola via White Sea, but AFAIK there was some sort of road following the coastline of White Sea.

Yay, now I can finally force my stupid vassal to accept a reasonable peace for their stupid war that they stupidly decided to fight while half my Empire was in rebellion, but which I had to fight so that they didn't get annexed.

Stupid vassals.

I'm still depressed by lack of a peace command. Would make my devious little plans a lot easier to code. :(

That is not an entirely correct understanding or description. Here is a link to the thread where I reveal the formula for empty slot merchant placement success. The initial post is updated for my interpretation of the 1.09 release notes.

Notice that the two recent changes to trade in 1.09 work together to result in little overall change to game play. The changes might not even be readily noticable to a player until he gets some high trade efficiency of 60% or so. You see previously, the trade efficiency had no effect on merchant placement success unless trade efficiency was over 100%. Now trade efficiency improves merchant placement success in small increments. So that success rates are not too greatly improved by trade efficiency, the base success rate has to be lowered to compensate.

At 30% trade efficieny there is no difference between 1.08 and 1.09. Below 30% trade efficiency, merchant placement success in 1.09 is worse than in 1.08. Between 30% and 100% trade efficiencies, merchant placement success is now improved in 1.09 compared to 1.08.

In SP as well. Its a major cheat that some guys wanted in the betas and its now restored to how its intended to be.

With the restauration of this old rule, perhaps that this one :

- Vassals to human players will no longer ever sign peace with anyone that is at war with their overlords.

should also be restaured for all vassals (to human player and to AI), and not only vassals to human players...

In the case of a new beta patch...
