That would be an improvement, but then any Roman Empire game would run into a similar problem with Tunis and Alexandria. Likewise if you'd like to go after historic possessions in Hispania or Gaul. Unless the AI is successful in creating Francia or Hispania, these realms would never drift.

Considering that recreating the Roman Empire is one of the main challenges offered up by LoR, I find it odd that any game attempting to do so will lead to a majority of your Empire being outside of your De Jure realm and thus be significantly more revolt-prone.
It feels like an arbitrary limitation designed to frustrate the player and provide an artificial challenge.

It should be significantly revolt prone and outside your de jure realm. The Roman empire idea is one of the worst ideas in LoR and should be extremely hard. Justinian almost destroyed Rome trying to retake it, the mostly muslim and heretic Syriacs and Egyptians would be even less likely to welcome the greeks with anything other than a pike and a crossbow. These are parts of the empire that welcomed the muslim arabs as liberators because of greek fanaticism against their branches of christianity.

^^ That would be nice indeed, although I think, his historical work would be best represented by giving him the title of a Grandvizier. I was a bit surprised, that he is missing in game right now, but as it seems, none of the important chancellors/councillors of the rulers of these period are integrated in the game. But I have to look into the game at a few starting points to make that sure. El Cid for example is in the game, but this might be an exception.
Yeah this guy was something. Make him some kinda superman. If not that, at least make him very special and make him available please.

As it stands now I can drift a kingdom out of an Empire so long as the de jure empire exists. So I can diminish an extant empire, but people are so hung up on the dream of an hypothetical empire that they'll refuse to acknowledge my rule?
In which world does that make the slightest bit of sense?

It doesn't. The current problem started out as a fix for a different problem. :p You see, when non-existent de jure empires were added, kingdoms started drifting out of their non-existent empire as soon as the game started. 100 years after the start, every non-existent empire would have become titular or at least greatly diminished. So now, kingdoms don't drift out of non-existent empires...not even into an empire that actually does exist. I rather like CK2+'s idea (or was it some other mod?) of making all of the made-up empires titular. That way, you are free to declare the Empire of Scandinavia if you meet the appropriate conditions, but it will still take a century for people to consider the Empire of Scandinavia to have any kind of recognized legal/traditional status.

I agree on being able to ransom people, like everybody as long as you can pay, and especially your family. IMHO denial of ransom should be a CB. Realistically speaking, even in a kingdom with MCA, where war is precluded, there should still be ways to extract your wife or son from the prison of some other noble. Right now, the "has claims on my titles" modifier and the inability to ransom people who are not your vassals or courtiers makes this impossible. There should be events, possibility of royal intervention, possibility to give up claims in order to regain freedom (for example if I got imprisoned in a de iure/depose liege war and have no intention of prosecuting a weak claim resulting from marrying the dude's aunt).

I agree that "child would become hostage in a foreign power" when finding tutors for children should be removed or diminished for family members.

I agree completely.

Better yet, just remove Syria and Jerusalem from the Arabian Empire. Make it a No-Man's-Land like Poland and Lithuania are.

I modified my personal version in such a way that only the Byzantine Empire and Holy Roman Empire are de jure Christian empires with Persia and Arabia as Muslim counterparts. However given my previous posts on this subject, that shouldn't be surprise.;)

In which world does that make the slightest bit of sense?

Understood. So the fix should be that provinces learn how to drift back to de jure provinces when re-taken. Not to keep the map forever static in arbitrary ways.

It, uh, does. People will get funny dates for birthdates (like the 217th of February, -39) but it's feasable already. I've had that specific example come up while testing myself, and I went rolling on the floor.

I rather like CK2+'s idea (or was it some other mod?) of making all of the made-up empires titular.

That worked, but the behavior should still be fixed. At the least, kingdoms should be able to drift into another empire from a nonexistent one, although this could lead to a situation where Rome and Hispania between them take so much land that, sometime in the 15th century, the Berbers declare an Arabian Empire consisting of Libya.

I'd love it if 1.09 fixed the simultaneous death bug. I've had it pop up THRICE in a single game and I ragequit, since my ruler suddenly was a 9-year-old, who had 4 older siblings and only 2 of them should really be dead instead of 4.

In response to someone else’s question, I went looking at how cultural conversion works. You can only get the settlers event if your culture is the “conquest culture” of the capital province. I see the logic there: if some foreigner inherits the throne, his family will assimilate to their subjects’ culture rather than vice versa. It also makes sense that not all conquests trigger this flag. Historically, nomadic conquerers were assimilated rather than assimilating others. This would be even more the case for mercenary captains who usurped some land.

The list of casus belli that do set this flag looks like it could use some tweaking. Crusades set it, but holy wars and jihads don’t?

I recommend setting the conquest culture flag on holy wars, jihads, and when a top liege revokes titles (perhaps not any title, but at least, if you revoke every holding in a province, you’re systematically replacing the native rulers with your own culture down to the local level).

Also, a decadence revolt should not set the conquest culture. It’s bad enough to have armies of Islamic radicals from the Arabian desert pop up in Spain without them replacing Andalucian culture with Bedouin, too.

Holy Wars are for adding territory to your realm, not carving out a new state. As for the Crusades, there's a fair argument to make that the Crusader states were too cosmopolitan for a new culture to displace the local one.

Personally, I hope the crew takes a cue from that Sicilian culture mod, and makes a bunch of potential cultures with the melting pot framework. Maybe have Crusader Frankish culture retain Frankish cavalry, but adopt Arabic garb. Stuff like that.

Holy Wars are for adding territory to your realm, not carving out a new state.

I don’t see how it follows from this that, if you press a claim to a county, win a crusade, or get the Pope to endorse your invasion, the new ruler can bring in settlers to start the cultural conversion, but if you win a holy war for an intermediate amount of territory, or launch a religiously-endorsed invasion of England as a Muslim, he won’t, and therefore the culture will never shift.

Factor technological progress by actual gameplay. Having a martial king who is actively involved in wars, with more baronies, interacting with other martial cultures of varying technological progress, and who is winning battles and sieges progress further in martial technology. This is due to the assumption that martially minded individuals are always seeking out ways to improve the ways they wage war.

Vice Versa, a kingdom (or republic, in the coming DLC) which focuses more on economic engagement, with lots of towns, a trade union, and a high amount of flexibility for the burghers, should advance economically more quickly than they would martially. Same goes for a theocracy, or a king who favors the clergy in terms of learning technologies.

These bonuses are NOT applied when you choose to focus in an area (ie - having a lot of towns may not grant you an econ tech bonus) but rather when you excel in these areas. So, if your burghers love you because you require no levies from them and they are contributing a good deal of capital to you, and you have allowed a republic to blossom on your shore, then you are given an econ bonus. A king (or a gifted lineage of rulers) who manages to excel in all these fashions should be given bonuses on their tech discovery rate in addition to their advisers who may be actively researching tech discovery. I think this actively emulates the natural and organic "trickle down" method of scientific progress, while also factoring in the human element.

I'd love to see more culture-specific titular titles/realms if we don't want to just be labeled 'Britannia' or 'Francia,' not remove them entirely, but give more options for what people want to be named. Along with that, fancier titles for Emperors depending on culture, Empereur for French, Imperator for Italians, and so on. It's nice to see Kaiser, Basileus and Tsar, but why stop there if you're bothering to put some flavor in at all?

Any improvements to the UI that lessen the tedious tasks:
1. Auto invite all to plot. Bonus: When you click the button you get list of the people to be invited with option to remove who you don't like (alcoholic imbeciles).
2. Filter characters by "Will accept invitation to our court". Or at least put the thumb indicator somewhere in the list.
3. Some way to get a list of my kinsmen and filter it by: married, landed. So keeping a healthy dynasty isn't a chore.
