I'm glad that Paradox is adressing the stability issues. The memory leak was so bad on my PC that I couldn't play a game past 1680 or so. That's the reason I had to be such a war monger, honest!

:D

I'd call making ur car less prone to exploding a definite improvement :D

Why do people feel entitled to have improvements (as opposed to fixes) released in the patches? You bought the game for the features promised at the time and nothing more. Sure, you have the right to suggest improvements, but I don't think you should expect them at all. It looks like they're doing their best to fix bugs as they find them. As far as I'm concerned, that's all we can reasonably ask for. I for one am quite pleased with the list of changes announced.

Chema_Cagi,

I would be tempted to agree with you if it wasn't for the fact that Paradox has labored tirelessly bugfixing and fine-tuning since the game was first released in Germany back in November. You cannot expect them to continously give you new features; especially not considering the fact that they have announced a true expansion pack.

I do agree that it would be nice if they fixed some of the more pressing bugs in the bug list (and I still think there is a good chance they will), but honestly, whatever they do there will always be new bugs and requests for new features. There comes a day when it is simply time to move on...

I'm thankful that Paradox has corrected more bugs in this new patch. But don't lose the point: ideally, all computer games SHOULD be released bug-free, even great games like EU. The consumers have payed for this, at least in theory.

I agree that the computer game industry has been notorious for releasing games prematurely.

However, no software product is bug free. Further, most software products are not released with all of the features originally intended. Software products are monstrously complicated. The process of creating them is, comparatively, like industry in the early industrial revolution. There are many efforts going to radically improved the software development industry, but it will take a long time.

My little rant really serves no purpose. I suppose the question is what are the expectations for a patch, and what is delivered. Paradox does not advertise what they will release in a patch until they release it, and then often describe the patch features cryptically. I wish they would advertise what their next patch features are "expected" to be as soon as possible. They are going to get beat up by lots of people who wish such and such or so and so were in the patch, anyway, but it will set expectations better for most.

my expectations

Actually I expect software to come out of the box working. I don't EXPECT improvements in my patches because there shouldn't be patches. But software companies often "tweak" features in games to keep us interested until the next version. As good a game as EU is the limited AI (as all AI is limited, not just EUs) means that it will have about a 4-6 month life before I get bored and it gets moved to the shelf.

Daimyo:
I bought the game for the features listed. I think implied in that was that the game worked...

Memory "leaks" are what happens when a programmer
grabs a hunk of memory for some temporary use, and
forgets to put it back where he found it. If he
does this in a piece of code that is executed
repeatedly, sooner or later the system runs out
of memory. In the old days, the computer would
eventually abruptly crash or, if you were lucky,
terminate the program. Nowadays, even Microsoft
products are sophisticated enough to try to steal
memory from elsewhere to keep feeding the leaking
program, so what one sees before a hard crash
is that the system gets slower and slower and
the hard disk gets busier and busier.

There's a rather expensive, but reputedly rather
good, software product called "Purify" that can
be used to hunt down memory leaks in C or C++
code. I hope Paradox is making enough money
off of EU to buy a copy!

I'll be happy if we just have the fixes for the crashes....could the game be improved yes!.....can I live without them Yes!......can I live with crashes NO!!.

Lets fix the game before improving the game - and it looks like their going to fix it.

Cheers, Ice:cool:

Boooooo! Let's throw dirt on Paradox for working their asses of handing out new patches to improve the game and fix annoying bugs.

Ok so I also wanted to see a longer list of improvements to the AI and some other things. But the main priorities for a game-company is to get their games to work properly, i.e. eliminating chrashes, lockups, hangups and so on.
In EU these malfunctions have been quite frequent and numerous so I understand why there is mostly crash-fixes in the patch.

It's like having a Ferrari where the front-wheels keep coming off, but only complaining and whining about the bad car-stereo.
I'm certain that the Paradox-crew are doing their best to fix the things in the "To do list". Cause I don't think that the Paradox-guys are neither lazy nor stupid or crazy.

what?

Gentlemen,

The most serious thing for a programmer to do is to fix the bugs THEN improve the product. If they've got the bugs fixed, would you prefer to WAIT while the improvements are made before getting them or would you want 1.09 as a gub fix update and get a 1.10 improvement update in a month or so...

Actually, just about all console games fit that description. Nintendo and Sony won't let anyone release games for their consoles until they've undergone rigorous testing/debugging. Since there's no such authority mandating tough standards for the PC, most publishers fall into the release now, patch later mindset.

1.1...with improvements..

if they say 1.1 is due in July, I say give them until September so they can get it right the first time. It's a trade off---do I want in right now or do I want it right. I'm for the latter. Maybe it's the perfectionist in me but I prefer quality of concept AND execution.
