What has been changed about jihads/invasions? I haven't played as muslim yet but I haven't noticed any difference on either of those fronts yet.
The retinue system does indeed change dynamics of the game a lot. Having a large territory and good tech levels Romans can have a nice big stack of imperial troops.
On the other hand Byzantium is not very stable from political point of view. Succession is disputed more often then not, and thus muslim holy wars have pretty good chance of success. Even more so once imerial retinue becomes an economical black hole - they eat all the money and cripple levies by "lack of finances".
Bonus points are awarded to AI that decides to hire mercenaries without a proper stable income (they loot few provinces, hire mercs, run out of money, mercs join enemy or start mercenary invasion...).
