During that time period, it was quite common for people to come to the States, work for a while, not like it and then pick up and go home.

And the all-knowing Victoria understands this and does not bother moving them back and forth but keeps them safely on the Italian peninsula where they want to be. :D

* Manpower is limited to culture. If you want dutch regulars, you have to convert dutch people to soldiers.

A question regarding this statement, if I may... I do hope this applies to reinforcing as well as recruiting, otherwise part of the problem remains...turn a number of large Dutch POP:s into soldiers, recruit a boatload of divisions, convert the Dutch POP:s into clerks/craftsmen, and then convert a few Malayans to soldiers for reinforcements...

I hope there is a way to view the divisions between manpower, BTW.

I'm not trying to be snippy, just curious. Typically, when reading about emmigrants and their economic status, a single trip across the Atlantic was hard enough to achieve.

American Wakes were common in Ireland during the period, families knew they would never see one another again, so they celebrated in similar fashion to a funeral. This image of the emmigrant just doesn't tally with the notion of short stays and returns.

One of my great-grandfathers for one went to Seattle, Wash to make money for a couple of years and then returned to Norway.

The overwhelming majority of uropeans migrating to the US were "economic migrants". About a quarter of those going from Norway actually returned to the old country.

The portuguese countryside is full of "brasillian" houses (flamboyant, nouveau-riche type buildings :)) from all the people who emigrated to Brasil and came back loaded with cash. The pattern of the migrants seemed to be what's descibed in a portuguese book of the 1860s. Roughly "If you go to Brasil, you come back rich or you die there. People see Brasil as a place where riches are waiting to be picked, and coming back a pauper is seen as indicating lack of intelligence."

Funnily, when you cross the north border into Galicia, the countryside is littered with "portuguese" houses (flamboyant, nouveau-riche type buildings). ;) Why does it seem that people are always willing to work harder when they're abroad?

The tendancy to return to Europe was largely a Scandanavian phenomenon. I believe (do not quote me yet) that the notion was to return to buy back from the aristocrats family lands of which the landed peasantry were largely dispossessed in the late eightteenth/early nineteenth century, having made sufficient funds in the Americas, often building up a farm in order to sell it and return.
For most Europeans, however, it was a one way journey.

Why did this thread morph into a discussion of immigration by people who obviously read little to no social history (anecdotes don't count as evidence, by the way)?

It should be about why its Wednesday and there's no patch? :)

No one's said it was supposed to be out on Wednesday, have they? Johan said "next week". A very elastic time period. :) Personally I am assuming it will be completed and released to publishers on Friday, Strategy First will have gone home for the weekend, and thus the NA patch won't be available until next Monday (and based on my EU2 flashbacks, will contain some horrible mistake, like the UK never building factories or something...)

My understanding is that NA users don't need the SF patch this time around. I used the European patch on my 1.00 SF edition and it patched it just fine.

But you are right, that's typically what happens. You release a patch on Friday and SF takes about a month to get it out.

I wasn't really criticizing the fact that patch isn't out today so much as criticizing how the thread has developed, especially after DK deleted so many posts. I was hoping for the patch today, but I'll be happy if its tomorrow. :)

Yes. One should never take experiential fact as any indication of reality. Truth is only found in books by tenured university faculty with political agendas who sometimes have even briefly visited the places on which they pontificate.

I was only joking myself, but a reality check wouldn't hurt every once and a while. Take the time to look around and you might be surprised at what you find.

When It Is Done

I have a feeling that the response regarding and update on when the version 1.02 patch will be ready is alot like watching the old film THE AGONY AND THE ECSTESCY, as when asked by Pope Julius II when the Sistine ceiling would be finished; Michaelangelo would reply "when it is done."

Somehow I suspect Johan has a similar answer...

But, I am hoping that the patch is out soon as in today (Thursday). Especially hopefull that the North American patch is up before the weekend and we don't have to wait over a long weekend to get it.

The events of 1848

The February/March Revolutions of 1848 must be included in this (or some future patch). There is a "Surge of liberalism" event for Sweden to simulate the very modest effects of the Continental events in Scandinavia. YThe absence of 1848 is puzzling.

Basically 1848 should set up Lombardia, Veneto and Hungary as revoltin nations, with revolts in the major cities (Wien, Prague as well).

I've only encountered one Austrian event related to the ethnic makeup of that country, the Speak Hungarian event. That has an effect on Hungarin POPs only. I think its should hav equal effects on Slovaks, Romanians and Croats. THe Hungarians should be as militant as the Poles!

If Ausrian history is simjulated in the game I think "overpowerted" Austria will disappear.

I have read that no new events will be "officially" added in any patch. Take your ideas to the VIP forum and lets see what they can do. I think I remember a long time ago with HoI - like version 1.02 somebody at Paradox was good enough to post his own link to the patch before SF put it up. I could be wrong, might have been an entirely different game.
