During an attack, one of my units had its general die. No big deal; drop that unit out of the attack, assign new general, rejoin attack 24 hours later.
Some time (days) after I won the battle, I happened to check on the unit. No general assigned to it. Thinking I must have made a mistake, I assigned another general.
Some time later, the same thing happened. No general when I chanced to look at that unit. Sure that I hadn't made a second mistake, I assigned yet another general. I also made sure it couldn't have been one of the ones which were assigned to units which were in the process of strat redeployment--I've seen that steal leaders away before.
When I saw yet again (months after the original battle) that that unit had no commander, I decided to try another approach. I merged the unit with another. And so far, so good; there's still a general in charge, some days later.
Never seen anything similar before. Sadly, I wasn't paying enough attention to who was assigned and can't tell you whether the leaders were returned to the pool or whether they've been eliminated.
