This has been a problem in each version of the game, but it seems a lot more prevalent in the latest patch. If an enemy unit starts moving to occupy one of your provinces, and you engage them in battle, when you win, if during the battle they had time to arrive at the province, they will instantly retreat to that province and capture it. It's obviously a pretty significant problem as it can cause all kinds of messes, and possibly could be resolved by having the logic process battle defeats and retreats before movements, seems to me like it's likely trying to process things out of order.

What actually happens in this situation is that the defending unit arrives into the other province (before being defeated), leaving the combat and the other side of the combat is declared victorious. Both events (messages) happen at the same time for the player and this could be the reason for the confusion. While not optimal in all situations, this behavior is not a bug.
