playing on ironman, I accidentally took a number of Japanese & italian cores instead of giving them to my puppet japan & italy respectively, so I resorted to the only "undo" feature that exists: not-so-gently quit the game without saving. loading the save starts at peace, with old occupations, and immediately crashes to desktop without error message when unpausing (instead of triggering peace conference?).

HoI4 does not keep the last 2 autosaves, so the save game effectively is irrevocably lost.

save file attached.

Sounds like the save is incomplete, which would typically be a result of the game closing WHILE saving, or some other write error. Can't say for sure that that is what happened here, but it seems plausible.

Possible, but it would imply the saving progress never ends during the entire peace deal process, as there was ample time (~ a minute) between quit and the last action. It was quit during turn 3 or 4 of the peace deal.

My main gripe with the crashing is that there was no earlier backup autosave (like with eu4, for instance) that I could fall back on.
(alternatively, some way to transfer territory you have already claimed to your allies/puppets in subsequent turns)
