The Naples port may suffer from the same issue as the Gibraltar port. Trapped fleets if province is taken while they are in port.
I fail to understand. There is no strait province anywhere close by. Only three exist on the whole map, 2441 is certainly not one of these.

Just correct it, I have never seen a problem with the arrows and it sure looks weird that fleets skip the province border when going to sea.
... Somewhat hard to spot, as a player typically has no reason to use Naples as a port, but now that we know, no reason to leave it be.

Incidentally, Naples is also (marginally) more useful with seazone 2441, as there are already two other naval bases bordering 2439.

Hi,

I don't quite understand this issue. When I move a ship out of Naples it currently can move to either of those sea zones directly. But 2441 seems like the correct choice and I have updated my Province file to show that. Try looking at Taranto. That seems to allow direct movement into the Adriatic. This may force a recalculation of the Distance Table. But my changes already require that.

Yes, fleets can always move into any adjacent province from their port. Some consider this a bug in the game.
What certainly is a bug though is that automatic pathfinding of fleets on mission will not consider this ability: A fleet will path from port to the seazone specified in the province file and only from there towards their objective.
Move orders into provinces not adjacent to the port will exhibit the same behaviour (so from Naples to Gulf of Taranto, a fleet will path through the Ligurian Sea, although it does not have to).

Gaahhh.

Hints needed. I'm sure we have edited the world_names files previously, but the game loader does not like any of the changes I have attempted, not even to correct spelling in the "English" field. I am missing something, but cannot see what.

Examples. AREA_EAST_COST_OF_NEW_ZEALAND. I tried to modify the "English field to "coast", but the game locked up loading the provinces. I had also updated province_names, but it didn't help.

AREA_ESPIRTU_SANTO. I am pretty sure we changed this long ago. Indeed, the field reads "Espiritu Santo" correctly. Looking, I notice that the Map was never changed. Aughh! Here comes another iteration. Good thing Teg wasn't in any big hurry to integrate the map changes.

Would help "best" if people could freaking spell. rofl

I will test this some more over the weekend.

Hi
I know it could previously be edited. This is from HSR:

AREA_EAST_SEA_OF_OKHOTSK;Southeast English Coast;Mer orientale d’Okhotsk ;Mar di Okhotsk orientale;Mar de Ojotsk oriental;Ostmeer von Okhotsk;Wschodnie Morze Ochockie;;;;;X

I did that edit with Notepad. I tried the NZL example and it loaded/worked fine. So either you've got something wrong elsewhere causing the crash or the edit to Worldnames is messed up. I almost always use simple old Notepad for these files to prevent messing up the format. Might try that.

mm, maybe I need to try them one at a time.

Denniss, yes. Was only messing with the "English" slot.

It should all work. It certainly doesn't like me trying to use one AREA for another (which should work).

Mmh. Have you tried checking whether that area name is used anywhere else?
AI files reference areas by name in the admiral/ignore block.

... Although that should not hurt when just swapping names...
Are you sure that your editor does not change the file's encoding? I cannot think of anything else.

well, I can check other files.

I have only used Notepad for years due to the potential for formatting errors to creep in with programs like Excel, for example.

edit: Zsar1, you have probably nailed it. There they are in some of the AI files. Nice catch, and thanks! I will go through them, then test it to be sure.

I remember vaguely playing around with exactly this issue a couple of years ago and being utterly unsuccessfull. I also wanted to correct spelling errors in sea zone names.

Success!

There will be a Champagne_Ardennes Area comprised of Reims, Sedan and Verdun. I used the Area Indiana, whose two provinces I combined with Illinois.

I fixed the Cost/Coast error near New Zealand.

Got rid of the Slave Coast entries which I consider particularly rude. Now the land area will be Dahomey_Togo and the coastal area the Bight of Benin.

The AI files do not affect loading, but I will to review and update them, as I believe the game merely ignores entries it doesn't recognize under the naval invasion section.

If any other misspellings come to mind, now would be a good time to mention them.

Hi,

Sounds good. We definietely could reuse a few other "excess" areas. For example, there a 4 areas covering a very small portion of New England (USA) that definitely could be done with 1-2 Areas. the Dakotas get 2 areas when 1 would be adequate. OTOH. there are some areas in the SOV that actually might see combat that are just gigantic.

AFAIK no. It might have been done and then overwritten.

I have never really paid too much attention to AREAS and REGIONS before. I was looking eastwards and noticed that several AREAS overlap (1936) national boundaries. Is that a problem?

Does anyone here know the (game) purpose for these two layers?

Areas and Regions are valid targets for air and sea missions. Where they do not fit the intended mission scope, single provinces have to be targeted one per mission.
Sometimes, missions do not work on single provinces for no apparent reason, though.

Areas are used in a few event commands:
  • areaowned
  • areacontrol
  • garrison
Areas are the basic map unit used for calculating AI garrison placement (at least according to ai_file_doc.txt).
They are used in two blocks of AI files:
  • admiral/ignore
  • garrison/area_multiplier
If I am not mistaken, the "Support Rebels" espionage action also targets areas.

... And that should be all the uses. At least I cannot think of any other.
