I always felt appalled at how my motherland left poor Poland to face the might of the Wehrmacht in 1939 while we rushed to drink French wine and diddle the mamoiselles. Especially since, after defeat, the brave Poles, some of whom I had the privilege to know in my youth, flocked to our shores and manned several fighter squadrons which may well have tipped the balance in our own struggle against "Fat Hermann", as well as many army and naval units.
So, my first game in the demo was played as UK, and my first action, after flushing the "Nervous Nellies" from my cabinet, appointing various commanders to formations, and setting tech and production targets (mostly to support future air and naval defence objectives) was to dispatch an expeditionary force to Poland.
This was set up in the "diplomacy" panel. First I had to take "Diplomacy" back from the AI, then "Send Expeditionary Force"....In a fit of optimism I sent EVERYTHING except HQ London.....after all, if we could stop the evil Bosche on the Vistula, then the French should be able to hold The Maginot line against a depleted Wehrmacht. No half measures for our gallant allies!
Hmmm.....now all my units have little Polish flags and I can't do a damned thing with them.....still I can at least direct my transports to load them while I send the assembled Naval might of our glorious allies the Orkney Isles to escort them through the Baltic.
OMG....the entire British land forces, now serving under little Polish flags, will not leave the lovely English....or Scottish, pubs. Seems that their newly acquired Polish accents are having such an effect on the local chavettes as to overcome any desire to leap aboard the palatial troop transports! And to make matters worse some of my Naval units have dashed into Le Havre, run up the Polish Bi-colour and are jabbering away in Polish chit-chat with no desire to obey English recall signals.....I blame calvados and unshaven desmoiselles..:-(
Quickly I fire the Foreign office and seize the only direct line to Poland.....All my attempts to regain control of my Expeditionary Force which won't expedition are met with polite acknowledgement and a happy click telling me that they will return home (to Poland!!!???) after a week or so, but nothing happens!!!! Ooooops, there goes half my military, I guess my concession from the French to send units through their territory ain't going to help a whole lot :( , lets see what we can do with just the Navy and some air units.
Well, as the entire British Army dissipates itself in the hostelries of the British Isles while wearing Polish colours Adolf steamrollers into Warsaw and independent Poland goes stripey and disapears into the uniform greyness of Greater Germany......But they STILL don't return to my control...
At least the French are holding well on the Maginot line, and there is no sign of the Grey machine coming on an end-run through the low countries. German submarine and surface ship losses to the Orkney Navy continue to mount and British destroyers are patrolling the convoy lines down as far as Walvis Bay and well out into the Atlantic. The Demo ends: Germany 1 Poland 0.

Having survived a vote of no-confidence in the House of Commons, primarily due to the support of the brewery interests and the baby-carriage manufacturers' coalition I am off to read the manual and try to figure out how to mount a "Proper" Expedition to Poland.

Hah, people hated expeditionary forces in HoI2 and it seems they'll still hate them in HoI3! :D

 This is well and truly an AAR. I approve!

I approve! :D I always hated getting expeditionary forces from Italy while playing as Germany. Sucked down my oil all for nothing...

Excellent!

Part Deux....We sample Danzig Beer!

Well....a second attempt to get troops into Poland worked! First my slimies obtained permission from everyone and his dog: Poland; France; Belgium; Holland; Denmark; and Sweden; to traverse their territories. (incase we needed to stage RAF squadrons in short hops.....The Naval swordfish ain't exactly heavyweights when it comes to smacking ME109's around during the air superiority debate)
Then we loaded the best trained and equipped units onto our 4 transport fleets and went for a Baltic cruise. Straightening out the command structure was a real pain but I'm sure it paid off!
We got to Danzig just as the Germans turfed out the heroic Polish defenders but a swift counter-attack by my 3 infantry and 1 armoured division won us Danzig and 3 surrounding provinces before the Poles finally evaporated and the might of the Wehrmacht was turned upon us.....ooops! Time to "do a Dunkirk". We withdraw in an orderly fashion back into Danzig then all try to jump aboard the transports as the Orkney Navy's 2 carrier task forces cover us from the air.......

THERE ARE NO AVAILABLE TRANSPORTS TO BOARD..... Whaaaaat? look at all those rusting hulks circling Danzig!!!! Oh! I know, I have to rebase the transports in order to spring aboard......but although it says "Here is a happy little port where you can base your ships" can I?...Nooooo....'cos Poland is now part of the Sausage Empire....All I can do is watch, with a tear in my eye, as the cream of Britain's Army is slowly ground into hamburger. Bugger it, seems there is a high price for being the last one at the party....you get to pick up the empties, then you DIE!

I guess going to help the Poles wasn't such a good idea after all. The only way it could work is if we started building troops and transports in '36.....Four boatloads in '39 are nothing but a speed-bump to the Grey Machine.
Perhaps I'll do the conventional thing and go explore the French countryside. But this time we'll have to make sure we have a way out!!!

The Happy Ending

When we last spoke I was having trouble getting my British Expeditionary Force out of Danzig after the fall of Poland:

Next morning I went back...I still couldn't get my transports into Danzig harbour but by left-clicking my unit in combat in Danzig then right-clicking my nearby transports I got a result! As soon as the unit got beaten out of Danzig, or when the battle of Danzig concluded with my defeat (whichever happened first). My bloodied but unbowed division was on the rusty hulks... and ready for the despondent cruise to the beer-deprived north-east .....of France....for their next sound drubbing.

So, you can get troops back on ships...maybe 'cos we were fighting in a port...but my transports were NOT based there.

Another issue... Anyone else having trouble getting transports to "rebase" in home ports in order to load troops? I've found it can take several "rebase" attempts to get the rusty hulks over the sandbar. But equally, one can "move command" (left click the unit, then right click the transport) the troops onto the transports as they stand offshore (in the same square) without using the "Board Ship" command. Hope this helps!

Edit: Potski explained it:
Quote:
When trying to rebase you have to be careful to click in the province where the base is located. (not the base itself, or the water.)

Thank you, that explains the "several tries" and will speed future BEF's..
