That is outstanding, wonder what the game will be when it comes out?

According to the guy it's unfortunately only an art demo by THQ. It would make an awesome TV series/film though.

Between application for University, other commitments and a wee bit of GTA IV which is even playable on my comp ( ) the work on the next updated is progressing slowly but surely. This is a bump post.

I'm a loyal reader of this AAR and have been for a long time. It's time I expressed my admiration in a more tangible way (since I'm apparently not so good at consistently adding my comments here) and to do that I nominate you, trekaddict, as Character WritAAR if the Week. You really deserve this.

Congratulations :)

Chapter 76

Faslane

Ian and Felix were sitting on the train back to London. When they had given the latest report to M his answer had only been orders for them to report back to London as soon as possible. Ian had a bad feeling about this, because whenever M gave such cryptic orders trouble was usually not too far behind, and now that he had someone to loose he no longer felt as reckless and adventurous as he had been during his stint in MI6, although he would never tell Felix that. Felix on the other hand was relatively calm, but Ian's obvious discomfort started to worry him. “Pray tell, Ian, what is is putting these creases on your forehead?” he asked. “The orders from M, or rather the lack thereof. Whenever he is like that something rather terrible is following close behind, and frankly, I don't think I am in the mood for such things this time.” Felix had some ideas as to why, and he was happy for both of them, but he reserved his right to torture Ian a bit once the mess they were currently in was over. “God knows what awaits us when we get to London.” Ian saw this conversation as over and retreated behind his newspaper. Felix could only see the feet sticking out from under it and decided to grab his last cup of Coffee. He always wondered how Coffee and Tea had landed on the list of strategic resources before the war, and... well, he wondered about the Coffee at least. This was Britain after all. He swore to himself that one day he was going to teach the limeys how the good stuff was made, but for now there was a war to win. The headlines in both papers were similar, mainly rotating around the ever louder calls for an end to the Phony War and the usual clashes between boneheaded idiots and Imperial troops, clashes that Fleet Street almost unanimously saw as unsporting and, much to Felix' amusement unbritish as well.

After a while he chose to look outside. Despite the continuous cries by the French Communists and more and more in their establishment the Empire was arming herself for the war, and Northern England was a good example. The Island started to resemble one huge, gigantic Army base, with camps and bases of all sorts springing up all over. The BEF, or rather the group of Division which would eventually become the BEF was larger than ever, and would, as Felix had heard in the grapevine, include a powerful armoured Component. Still, he was a Naval Officer, so he would leave the warfare on land to the Generals. With that he leaned back in his seat, pulled his cap down over his eyes and went to sleep for the rest of the trip. Only when the train rolled into Waterloo Station was he shaken awake by Ian. “Come on, we don't want to keep the boss waiting any more.” With that both grabbed their small suitcases and exited the train. The platform was crowded with military personnel and civilians who desperately tried to evacuate their families to the countryside. Still the two Officers easily made their way through the thick crowds to the main stairs of the station. Unusually enough they had no idea where to go from here, and had decided to just call a taxi. But just like it had happened to Ian all these months ago, they were approached by a civil servant. After satisfying themselves that he was indeed working for the Home Office by the way of the Identity Cards that were mandatory for servicemen and Civil Servants since the war had begun, they followed him to a black Government car, and just like last time M was sitting in it.

“Gentlemen, what is your final report?” M said, not wasting time with a formal greeting. This told both of the men that whatever was up was most serious, and with a small knot in his stomach Ian answered, being senior in rank. “The boffins are sure it was sabotage, most likely a small charge in the engine itself.” “Any signs on who or where?” Ian shook his head. “No joy, Sir. Whatever evidence existed was blown to atoms in the explosion. They also said that whatever happened must have started in Canada, and I agree, because our own people checked it and that particular engine was replaced in Canada when the old one developed a fault, or at least that's what the maintenance log says.” “Any sign of tampering there?” This time it was Felix who answered. “I checked it myself, and there is no evidence that I could see. We should have one of our specialists look at it, I brought it with me for that very reason.” The car pulled up in front of Whitehall at that moment, the short drive from the station only taking a few minutes. “So all the trails we have lead to Canada so far?” Ian nodded. “Yes, Sir, but I...we don't think that the investigation on British soil should stop here. For example, we still have no idea why, and we think that someone should talk to the passengers of the flight. We interviewed the RAF crew, but there were many higher Officer ranks that we need to speak with too, Sir.” “That's what I've told the PM yesterday. He gave me a free hand on this. Your written report please.” He grabbed it from Ian's hand. Along with the maintenance log and stepped out of the car. “Go home to your families, and report to me tomorrow at 0900 hours.” He walked inside and the two others were sitting in the car, while the WREN driver waited patiently for new directions. “That went well.” Felix said drily and moved the window used to talk to the driver back. Soon the car rolled to it's new destination, and Ian, already knowing where he was taken and not really annoyed about it asked: “What do you think?” Felix answered defeated: “The same thing I said to you when you asked me that the last eleven times. And NO I don't feel bad about it!” No more was spoken until the car pulled up at the Leiter residence.

SOE Headquarters

As per their orders Ian and Felix stood at attention in M's office. And right on the dot M emerged from a little door on the side, his customary pipe smoking already. It was easy to deduce from his rumpled uniform and the rings under his eyes that he had not slept at all, and that did not bode well. It was mainly an instinct thing for both Ian and Felix, but they both sensed that they would not like what they were about to hear, despite not knowing much of anything about the background of the whole matter. “Gentlemen,” M began, “what you are about to hear is most secret and must not leave this room. It has been classified as high as Tube Alloys.” Felix' eyes widened at that, because it told them that the whole investigation had just been shifted into a whole new dimension. Just what on earth had been going on in that plane? M continued shortly after, by quickly explaining the matters behind it all. “The passenger list was unremarkable because the one it was all directed against was travelling under a false name. He was in the list as one LTC Cramer, formerly of the United States Army, but in fact his name was different, and he was rather a envoy from the USGE to the Prime Minister. They were, or rather are, to discuss certain matters of 'mutual interest', and now it seems someone got the wind of it and tries to sabotage the relations we have with them.” Felix, desperately trying to stay calm, asked: “So this will reinforce the hunch we had yesterday, and surely someone in Canada will investigate it further?” “Not someone. You two will. The next RAF flight to Canada is out this evening, and I have made arrangements that you two can be on it.” Whatever Felix and Ian had expected, this was not it, and the looks on their faces proved it. “We, Sir? I mean the Canadians themselves surely have people able to...” Felix was rudely interrupted by M. “That's beside the point, Lieutenant Commander. But I have to ask, do you have any problems with this assignment?” “None at all, Sir. Rest assured Sir, no one in this room hates the Reds more than I do.” Felix replied acidly, personally insulted by the implication of M's question. “That was what I wanted to hear, Commander. Dismissed.” Ian and Felix walked out of the Office, and as soon as the door was closed Ian turned to Felix who still had a stone-cold expression on his face. He opened his mouth to speak, but something in the eyes of his friend told him that it was better not to talk. Felix did indeed not fell like talking. He felt inner turmoil, and although he knew that Ian trusted him implicitly, it was disheartening to know that there were those that doubted him. He could not blame them though, because the American Exile Community was riddled with spies, especially in Canada, despite the best efforts of the Security Bureau. Still, he hoped that he could prove himself.

[Game Notes: Well, we are off to Canada then! I believe that the close proximity to Red America opens up some interesting opportunities for our dear Felix, which is the main reason why I did it. Also sorry for the delay, but it's hard to write an update when GTA IV is just a mouse-click away... So much for multi-tasking. The next one is hopefully out sooner. The report Ian delivers was not all that easy to write, as I almost had the boffins use procedures that aren't invented for another few decades. Damn you TV and your crime shows!]

Thank you. I am done with GTAIV at the moment, as I tend to get annoyed when I die at the same point every time. The game really needs mid-mission checkpoints. Ah well, back to my one true love that is Hearts of Iron 2. I will try to post more often again.

To Canada and the always intriguing world of exiles, patriots and traitors. An excellent move sir. I'm thoroughly looking forward to the frozen and spy filled adventures Ian and Felix are bound to have. :D

I do wonder why Felix is still untrusted though, I can see the logic (he is an exile after all), but surely the time not to trust him was prior to Tube Alloys and meeting Einstein! If you trust him enough to do that you really should trust him for everything else. I can only guess their worried about him working against the US, even though it's evil commie US it still 'home'.
