12 - Contra Mundum

"War alone keys up all human energies to their maximum tension and impresses the seal of nobility upon those peoples who have the courage to face up to it."
  • Benito Mussolini, The Doctrine of Fascism, June 1932.

April - July 1949

War against United States started with four nuclear strikes against most important Italian allies: China and Russia. Manpower and resources were clearly on fascist side, so Allies used every opportunity to cripple enemy's advantage in these areas, especially with atomic bombs on their side.

At 11:00, April 5th, ROC's wartime capital Chongqing was nuked as the very first target.

Next morning, 6:00, what remained from former Soviet capital, Moscow, was obliterated.

Same day, at night, strategically important southern Chinese city of Guangzhou dissapeared in american atomic fire.

Although first attacks could be clearly seen as warnings (since actual Russian capital was Petrograd again, not depopulated Moscow, and Chongqing was mostly symbolic capital city), Guangzhou contained much brutal message: this is just a start.

Shanghai was bombed merely a week later. Chinese, although facing destruction of their ports and communication lines, were truly shocked by American response. There were even mad attempts to blame the victorious Generalissimo for this tragedy, but how? They won against both Japanese devils and Soviets to unify their great country, only to face brutal atomic bombardment.

Little they or anyone else, knew, what was happening very same time in one highly classified Alpine research facility. Work was slow, since many talented scientists and technicians were necessary elsewhere, many offered their talent to British and US governments or dissapeared in the war from one or another reason, however, even without war with the United States, possible ownership of nuclear weaponry offered Italian Empire unique opportunity to not allow 'mutilate victory' again. That everything under Italian imperial flag will remain Italian. Forever.

Mare Nostrum

Meanwhile, of course, Italian military and it's allies in the region focused to difficult task: complete destruction of Allied, or better to say, British, presence in Mare Nostrum. With Gibraltar, Malta and Suez as key targets.

Naturally, Imperia Marina soon engaged Royal Navy in vicious battles during many months-long blockade of Malta.

07X5Ugq.png

British Royal Navy repeatedly, now matter how disadvantaged they were, tried to break the Italian blockade at any cost, trying to bleed Imperia Marina enough to withdraw their capital ships. Il Duce, knowing that now Italy can't afford to lose face as leader of newly formed alliance, ordered all ships, included damaged ones, stay and continue with blockade. This caused later loss of many Italian capital ships and thousands of sailors dying in waters of Mare Nostrum, but also destroyed Royal Navy's offensive efforts.

In first weeks, British lost 8 Capital ships, not mentioning cruisers, destroyers, submarines and countless transports, at the cost of two old Italian battleships and two battlecruisers. Another significant portion of Royal Navy was also trapped on Malta itself afterwards.

North Africa

North African campaign during April-May was astounding success and cost only few drops of Italian blood, at least compared to other battlefields. Imperia Aeronautica soon struggled to keep air superiority against both RAF and USAF, but land forces of Imperio Esercito encountered only a little resistance, mostly from British troops. Armored and motorized divisions fervently continued with their march to Middle East.

Mediterranean Sea was finally changed into Mare Nostrum. Gibraltar fell even sooner.

The Rock of Gibraltar

Few days earlier, 15th May, 1949, hours before surrender of British and American garrison. Gibraltar was an important victory for both the Italian Empire and Spanish State. Combined with Franco-Italian campaigns in Africa, Gibraltar greatly bolstered ties of 'Latin Axis' nations in face of common enemy.

War in Africa

In case of Africa, Imperio Esercito couldn't afford to send many reinforcements to French West Africa or Italian East Africa: mostly colonial militia and lightly armed MVSN units were responsible for all the defensive and offensive actions, until better equipped division will be available for african frontlines, since priorities were elsewhere.

Although not always succesful, frontlines in West and East Africa remained stable and prepared for future offensives, especially when Italian forces secured Sudan soon after capture of Suez and established another safe supply lines to Italian East Africa.

Middle East

Finally, in the June, when forces from Egypt arrived, Imperio Esercito started major offensive against Allied forces in Iraqi area.

Italian tanks and motorized infantry divisions cut through Allied defenses like it was butter, captured tens of thousand soldiers on the way, with no intention to stop anywhere...

Not even in Tehran...

Unfortunately, barbaric nuclear strikes continued. This time an Italian city payed the price. July 26th was declared as day of national tragedy, and 'Remember Milan' became the new Italian war cry.

there is still a problem to finish it, though - should i write event for peace treaty, eventually, or try to win the hard way - annexation of all the Allies? :p

Second World War (truly the world one, unlike Nazi War or 'Great Crusade' - Eurasian War against Soviet Union) started with brutal atomic bombardment and costly siege of many, mostly British, strongholds, but strategic situation couldn't be changed: before the new 'Latin Axis' could start having great difficulties keeping Russia or China in the alliance, what remained of Allies actually helped them in many ways: most importantly, common enemy to hate, destroy and conquer.
First task was to finally change Mediterranean Sea into Mare Nostrum (Our Sea), with Spanish Gibraltar and Italian Suez: controlling all the trade and sealanes from Asia and to ensure, that East Africa won't fall.

FBW0zx9.png

Battle for Malta was costly, but Imperio Esercito sent waves after waves of troops from sea and skies to capture the island no matter what the cost. In December 5th, 1949, island surrendered. What remained from British Mediterranean Fleet had no choice, only fight and die, since Italian Empire officially declared withdrawal from Geneva Conventions, literally 'no prisoners of war will be taken' said Count Ciano in Geneva, just after series of American atomic bombardment.

YpquISE.png

End of year 1949 marked Italian invasion of India. Iranian surrender also allowed rest of the fascist allies to pour their troops to the battles, slowly, first to British Raj, in second phase to Africa.

tObkut5.png

Allied forces, instead of stopping Italians, rather tried to annihilate China, weakened by continuing nuclear fire, which in turn allowed the British to march into their territory.
In the same time, United States military invaded Russian Far East, Korea and Manchuria.
Not even that, though, couldn't stop Italy from destruction of British 'Crown Jewel'. Raj, overwhelmed by a bulk of Italian imperial army, surrendered February 28th, 1950.

Hoping to destroy military targets, morale and country's determination to wage war, more atomic bombs were dropped on more Chinese - and then on German - cities.

urbUIwW.png

With American military Imperia Marina in February 26th, 1951, suffered first truly terrible losses in Battle of Indian Ocean. Although victorious, with 6 capital ships of Royal Navy sunk, Italian Empire lost 4, including 2 carriers. Retreat to Italian ports was badly needed, and all fleets were merged into one unit, prepared for much greater task - invasion of British Isles.

KRhLYnF.png

Moment of surprise was now on Italian side: in October 16th, 1951, first Italian atomic bomb was used in Norfolk, just when invasion was happening in Suffolk, basically destroying all the reinforcements, prepared to throw attackers to the sea.

6CxsWJM.png

In few weeks, everything was over. Mussolini's demands were showed as the most lenient ones: indefinitely lasting Italian occupation zone and military installations in Cornwall, deposition of House Windsor and, most importantly, dissolution of United Kingdom - Kingdom of England, as replacement, under Italian supervision, was supposed to make plebiscites in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, if they want to remain as part of one country.
Duke of Westminster, designed Regent of England, saw no other option but signed the treaty.
Deposed King George VI., badly ill, died merely a days after treaty was signed.

vhG385x.png

In next year's summer, Italian Empire used another show of force as a sign to continue the war, with planned invasion to North America. It was a gamble: if Americans didn't send enough forces to Asia or they'll use atomic weapons against landing Italians, everything can be over.

A3bkVIo.png

Fortunately, no such thing happened. Italians landed on Canadian soil in 1953, and it took only month before country fell.

bVM576J.png

To ensure their victory, more landing were made, while Italian strategic bombers used new hydrogen bombs against American forces in China, stopping their onslaught once and for all.

kmzrNzH.png

It was obvious, that USArmy used their own gamble: every available troops were sent to Asia, leaving their country almost defenseless. Not able to quickly establish stable frontlines, what was left there was encircled by Italian tank divisions and Bersaglieri elite troops in area of New England.

MRiO8sT.png

After that, it was only a matter of time. USA, it's neighbours, allies, puppets, no one strong enough was left to stop either Imperio Esercito or Imperia Marina.

A68SW73.png

In year 1954, last Allied forces in South America were forced to retreat, when Italian troops conquered Panama Canal from both sides.

qShM31X.png

Brazilian army surrendered at June 21st, 1954. Chile followed at October 27th, just after capture of Santiago.

BrulrQf.png

Last remaining Allied nation, ironically, was the Republic of Japan. After annihilation of remaining American forces in China and Russia, Japanese islands were put under blockade and another series of both conventional and atomic bombardment.
When Italian troops landed, it was just barely recognized and what was more surprising, someone was still alive to sign a peace treaty.

The world war was finally over.

To prevent another possibility of US domination over Central and South America, fewer new states replaced the numerous old ones. Brazil was re-created under leadership of old Vargas's enemy, Plinio Salgado leader of the banned, fascist 'Brazilian Integralist Action' party.

slDALdi.png

Same as dissolution of United Kingdom, partition of United States was amongst 'non-negotiable' Italian condition: although only reborn Confederacy and Quebec remained part of the 'Latin Axis' and signed additional treaties with Italian Empire, in rump United States took control Gerald K. Smith, one of the founders of 'America First Committee' and member of many isolationist groups before and during the wartimes. Soon, the tensions grew between him, and enlarged Californian Republic, also called 'New Californian Republic' (NCR).

"The bars of this prison are Corsica, Tunisia, Malta, and Cyprus. The guards of this prison are Gibraltar and Suez. Corsica is a pistol pointed at the heart of Italy; Tunisia at Sicily. Malta and Cyprus constitute a threat to all our positions in the eastern and western Mediterranean. Greece and Egypt have been ready to form a chain with Great Britain and to complete the politico-military encirclement of Italy. Thus Greece and Egypt must be considered vital enemies of Italy's expansion ... The aim of Italian policy is first of all to break the bars of this prison ... Once the bars are broken, Italian policy can only have one motto – to march to the oceans."

- Benito Mussolini, 'The March to the Oceans' Speech, 1939

xMyalho.png

Indochina was again French, Italian Malaya Colony was established, Phillipine island were returned to Spain, but China once again chose voluntary isolationism, going so far to 'expel all foreigners from mainland', causing 'Sino-Italian Split' and later, 'Spratly Island Crisis', an attempt to built rocket installations in the middle of 'Latin Axis' territories. Only India remained an ally, fearing even more aggressive and bitter future China.

82psKr1.png

In 1960s, Italy controlled military bases in almost every corner of the world. France - crippled by just another brutal population decline, was slowly turning into Italian protectorate. When Italy had reached 80 million population, including italianized citizens from annexed territories, not counting Italian colonies and protectorates, France had 30 million and still declining and under only greater influance of italian culture, language an policies every year more. Trying to prevent that, countries like Spain or Bulgaria rather left the 'Latin Axis'. Other states, Poland, Romania or Netherlands saw no better option than Italian 'protection'.

lJQzSME.png

Imperial military was only expanded. In 1960s, italian nuclear submarines, carriers and battleships were seen on every ocean, as remainder who possess, if not largest, then most powerful and modern weaponry in the world.

Ironically, the world has very much returned to how it was millennia ago: a Cold War, Rome vs China.
That never happened, you're thinking of the Persians.

There were others. Maya Empire, Indian Empires, Parthian Empire, the Xiungnu Khanate etc. and almost all of them with territories and people half the Roman Empire or more. The Xiungnu probably had even larger territory than Rome, but that part of history is blurry. Romes luck was that Parthia always had too much troubles.

Parthia was never as powerful as Rome, Rome just also had the Germans to worry about.

Parthia still wasn't AS powerful, Rome just had bigger fish to fry (like the fact that it was about to be in a civil war and really didn't need a war with Parthia) and Crassus was a dumbass.

You going to provide proof of that or just state it as fact without any support?

It's supported by history. Parthia was well known for its frequent succession wars that took a lot out of their population (which was part of the reason why the Sassanids were so much more powerful) and did not try to launch a full on invasion of Roman territory. The only time the Partjians were really a threat to the Romans was during the reign of Marcus Aurelius, when they launched their invasion of the eastern Provinces, and yet were beaten back. Forgive me if I'm unwilling to hunt down the Roman and Parthian army sizes in 53 BC or something. The fact is that Parthia was never as strong as Rome.

A great conclusion to your AAR, or will you be continuing to the Sino-Italian war?

Nah, I am already in 1960s in the end. I respect 1964/1970 game's end.

However, in my headcanon, world will split into two factions, which will be still rivals in 21st century.
Eagle (fascist meritocracy) or Dragon (despotic totalitarianism). Only options. No democracy.
