Oof, Angela's getting a bad case of What Could Have Been. At least Olga's unlikely to get that too, considering she's already had a drastic change in her life. As for Tesla... I want to trust him here, really. Still just not liking how guilty he looks here.

Also, farewell to the Monkey House.

At least Olga's unlikely to get that too, considering she's already had a drastic change in her life.
There wasn't a direct equivalent of the Prague invasion and a post-1960s KGB in the Annionaverse.;)

An interesting outlook on what could have been for Angela, makes her entire arc all the more tragic tbh :(, and that device Walternate has does not bode well on what's to come methinks, as well as the fact that Hohenzollern Walter's life being in danger, he might just die in the following chapter especially if the Annionaverse X-Divsion thinks that the Hohenzollern crew are actually invaders

Since I haven't seen any stuff about the national anthems for any of the main nations, is it alright if I make a few suggestions myself?
Obviously this would be the Reich's

As for the Chinese Empire their anthem sometime in in the 30's till the end of the dictatorship would probably be this
for the Commune well obviously it would be the USSR theme we all know and love hate.

For Tsarist Russia it would definitely be this

Also on the topic of national anthems, would the Reich's provinces have their own 'provincial anthems'? if they do I bet Brittania's is their version of God Save the Queen except it's the Kaiser they're singing praise about, Marseille obviously won't exist given the French are minorities :p

The Annionaverse X-Division already thinks the Hohenzollernverse X-Division agents are invaders. And Walternate has a grudge to pay back to Hohenzollernverse Walter.
Obviously this would be the Reich's
Yep, that's been the anthem since the 19th century.
As for the Chinese Empire their anthem sometime in in the 30's till the end of the dictatorship would probably be this
That makes sense. I originally had their anthem be an original theme (China Stands Heroically in the Universe) based on existing Japanese and Chinese patriotic songs, but the dictatorship could adopt a more militaristic theme.
for the Commune well obviously it would be the USSR theme we all know and love hate.
Found the filthy capitalist! Gulag for you!
For Tsarist Russia it would definitely be this
They'd ideally drop their original anthem and adopt a more patriotic one. This would be appropriate.
Also on the topic of national anthems, would the Reich's provinces have their own 'provincial anthems'? if they do I bet Brittania's is their version of God Save the Queen except it's the Kaiser they're singing praise about, Marseille obviously won't exist given the French are minorities :p
They wouldn't have provincial anthems (in the same way US states don't have their own anthems), but there would be songs and genres associated with each province.

The Other Side, Part 3

Downtown Konstanstadt - May 10, 2010, 8:00 AM

High over Konstanstadt’s Ostend, a large four-rotor drone zipped over the looming skyscrapers. Anna sat inside, listening with interest to the computer-generated tour guide as her ride piloted itself to its destination at Unification Island.

“The Grand Hotel, formerly known as the Hotel Attraction, designed by Catalan architect and socialist Antoni Gaudi and built in 1908,” the guide said, outlining a spaceship-like building through one of the windows, “It has a total height of 360 meters. Its construction was subsidized by the Socialist Party of Greece, the ruling party of the communist Union of Red Themes, as part of the Party’s campaign to turn Konstanstadt, then known as Constantinople, into the modern jewel of the proletarian revolution. Construction was interrupted by the overthrow of the Socialist Party in 1910 by dictator Michael Anatolios and resumed four years later. The building was destroyed during World War II and rebuilt with Viennese influences in 1956 under the Empire-aligned Kingdom of Anatolia and later the Federal State Kingdom of Anatolia, despite Empress Octavia’s belief it was too unrealistic to be part of the new Konstanstadt.”

As they flew west toward the Bosphorus, Anna noticed several cordoned-off blocks along the waterfront on both sides of the strait and further north, near Kyparades Park. The computer outlined the cordoned-off area near the park.

“X Incident 2461,” the computer said, “A semi-permanent thin spot formed in October 2000 due to the actions of the terrorist Erwin Lukesh, who attracted X-Division’s attention when he began creating spatial breaches to evade capture. Efforts at containment initially led to the maiming of Agent Diana Frank, the death of Agent Brad Folger, and the temporary disappearance of Agent Olga Kirova, who was recovered in critical condition shortly before the area was quarantined. Lukesh’s body was never recovered. Regardless, the area remains off-limits due to the continued presence of naturally occurring spatial distortions. The general public is warned of high radiation levels.”

The computer highlighted the Hippodrome, Augustaeon Square, Great Palace, and Hagia Sophia, which were surrounded by no less than three electrified barbed wire fences and four heavily armed military checkpoints.

“X Incident 89722,” the computer said, “An unstable wormhole at the Hippodrome which would not close was contained by X-Division in 1985 and explained as an RAF dirty bomb attack. Due to recent legal developments, the 10,000 citizens encased in Quarantine Amber, the substance used to contain Class 5+ breaches, have been ruled legally dead. Snap elections were held for the political figures who lost their lives during containment.”

The drone turned south and descended toward Unification Island, the Statue of Octavia the Steel Empress welcoming Anna with a sword raised skywards.

“Unification Island,” the computer said, “Developed in 1956 to commemorate the final unification of the Holy Roman Empire under House Anniona, the statue was completed in 1962, several weeks before the death of Empress Octavia. Appropriated by the revised eminent domain provision of United Nations Resolution 1246, it is now the headquarters of the Ministry of Defense.”

Ministry of Defense, Unification Island - 8:15 AM

Major Karl Heidelberg walked into the room and saluted to Walternate.

“Herr Minister,” he said, “You said to inform you if we found anything odd, sir.”

“Yes,” Walternate said, looking up from his desk.

“Sir, we received a report of a high-priority individual being admitted into the emergency room at St. Eudokimos Hospital last night,” Heidelberg said.

“Who?” Walternate said.

“That's the odd part, sir,” Heidelberg said, "It's you.”

Angela’s apartment - 8:30 AM

Angela’s phone hummed, and she tapped snooze. It hummed again. She looked at Demetrios, who continued sleeping next to her, and then at her phone. It was Colonel Kurtz. Sighing, she picked it up.

“I thought I had this Monday off,” she said.

“Afraid not,” Kurtz said, “I’m uploading your assignment now.”

Ministry of Defense

Kurtz hung up and turned to Walternate.

“Team's on the way,” he said, “We'll get them, sir, quickly and quietly.”

“Good,” Walternate said, “You may go now. Keep me informed of any developments.”

Kurtz saluted and left the office. Several minutes later, the door opened again. Anna walked in, looking interestedly at the maps, portraits, and devices in the room before focusing her attention on Walternate.

“Herr Minister,” she said.

“Hello, daughter,” Walternate said, “I've imagined this moment so many times. I can't imagine how strange it must be for you.”

“I've seen the strange,” Anna said, “But this... this is something else.”

St. Eudokimos Hospital - 9:00 AM

Angela, Olga, and Tesla stood in line in the lobby of the hospital, waiting for their turn at the receptionist’s desk.

“This is the last hospital Walter would likely go to,” Tesla explained, “If we don’t find him here, we’ll head over to the Ostend.”

“Okay, well, how do you know he's not already in custody?” Angela said.

“I've checked with my sources at both Homeland Security—that’s what they call it here—and the Ministry of Defense,” Tesla said, “I don't believe Walternate's people have found him yet.”

“Walternate?” Olga said.

“It's a nickname Walter gave his counterpart years ago,” Tesla said, “Over here, he's the Minister of Defense. The X-Division answers to him.”

“To Walter?” Olga said.

“I know, it takes a little getting used to, doesn't it?” Tesla said.

He stepped out and cut to the front of the line.

“Excuse me,” he said.

“Sir, please get back in line,” the receptionist said.

Tesla took out his Show Me and handed it to the receptionist, who stared at it.

“Oh, sorry, sir, I didn’t realize,” the receptionist said.

“That’s quite alright,” Tesla said, “I believe a friend of mine is being treated here."

“What's the patient's name, please?” the receptionist said.

Angela tapped in Tesla’s shoulder. “Uh, Tesla?”

They turned around and saw Angela and Olga walking into the lobby.

“You two go,” Tesla said, “I'll buy you some time. You find Walter and get him out. I'll meet you in the parking lot.”

Angela and Olga ran into the hallway, while their counterparts approached the receptionist.

“Ma’am, we’ve been told Minister Humboldt was admitted to this hospital last night,” Olga said, “Could you check your records about him?”

“Give me a second,” the receptionist said.

“We'll also need his medical files purged from the system,” Angela said, taking out her badge, “X-Division authorization.”

The receptionist tapped on her tablet. “Done. You can find him in bed 18.”

“Thanks,” Angela said.

Tesla intercepted them before they could walk down the hallway.

“Uh, excuse me, excuse me,” he said, “Don't I know you from somewhere? Wait, I, I have it. You're agents, X-Division. You work for the Minister.”

“Sorry, sir, we're in a bit of a rush,” Olga said.

“I'd imagine you would be,” Tesla said, “Chaotic times, aren't they? Chaotic times indeed. I'm terribly sorry. The Minister and I are old friends. I'm Wilhelm Tesla. I see you're carrying those 76-Pulse Glocks. I designed those, you know.”

“Uh, I'm sorry, Herr Tesla, but we have to…” Angela said.

“…the 76 models don't have the phase repeater,” Tesla said, "That's a design flaw.”

While Tesla kept their counterparts at bay, Angela and Olga walked into a room and found Walter sitting on a bed, seemingly in good health.

“Uncle Walter?” Angela said.

“Angie,” Walter said, “It is you, isn't it?”

“Yes, Walter,” Angela said.

“Prove it,” Walter said.

“Oh, come on, Uncle Walter!” Angela said. “We don’t have time for this!”

“Yep, that’s you,” Walter said, “And you, Olig?”

“For the last time, it’s Olga!” Olga said.

“That’s you,” Walter said, “Wonderful.”

Back in the hallway, the other Angela and Olga looked annoyed by Tesla’s attempts at small talk.

“They also don't have the pulse function,” he said, “Which I am putting in the 77 model.”

“Oh, for frak’s sake,” Angela said, pushing Tesla aside, “Excuse me, sir.”

They walked towards Walter’s room. Inside the room, Angela helped Walter to his feet, but it looked like he didn’t need help.

“I thought you were shot,” Angela said, “You can walk?”

"I can dance, if you like,” Walter said, changing back into his normal clothes, “They have absolutely fabulous drugs here, Angie. I feel just great. Oh, and accelerated healing techniques. It, it's miraculous.”

“Okay, come on, Walter,” Olga said, putting her hand on her gun, “Tesla’s waiting for us.”

“Willy’s here?” Walter said.

“Yes, he is,” Angela said.

“That's nice of him to finally show up,” Walter said, scowling.

A minute later, Angela and Olga entered the room, but it was empty. Olga picked up Walter’s discarded hospital gown.

“Clothes are gone,” she said.

“He was wounded,” Angela said, “He couldn’t have gotten far.”

“I'll lock down the hospital,” Olga said, walking out

Angela took out her phone. “I need the security footage for this unit. Now.”

Outside, Angela and Olga escorted Walter to the parking lot. Tesla drove up to them in an old sports car and rolled down his window.

“Hello, Wilhelm,” Walter said.

“Walter,” Tesla said.

“I see you've aged,” Walter said.

“It appears I'm not the only one,” Tesla said.

“Is that the Porsche we sent over thirty years ago?” Walter said. “Looks like it.”

“Indeed it is,” Tesla said.

“How did you find it?” Walter said.

“I have my sources,” Tesla said.

“Get in, Walter,” Angela said, pushing him into the backseat.

Angela and Olga got into the car, and Tesla sped away. Back in the hospital, Angela connected her smartphone to the hospital’s CCTV network and streaming the high definition footage from Walter’s room. She gasped when she saw Angela and Olga leading Walter away. Olga walked over to her, and Angela stared at her in shock.

“Hey, you okay?” she said. “Looks like you just saw a ghost.”

Ministry of Defense - 9:30 AM

Anna and Walternate sat down opposite each other. Walternate handed her a cup of coffee, which Anna graciously took.

“Thanks,” she said.

She noticed the large map of the Reich hanging on the wall. The entire Rhineland and neighboring Elsass and Lothringen were covered in red, with smaller red dots spread out across the rest of the Reich, especially in the yellow-highlighted eastern provinces.

“What’s the yellow highlighting?” she asked.

“The federal state kingdoms of Greece, Syria, Anatolia, Armenia, and Alania, among others,” Walternate explained, “Organized out of the remains of the Eastern Roman Republic after the Great Unification War, reorganized after the nuking of Rome. Officially independent but for all other intents and purposes part of the Empire.”

“And what’s the red for?” Anna asked.

“Quarantine areas,” Walternate said, “Places where we contained anomalies.”

“The Rhineland?” Anna said. “Elsass-Lothringen?”

“They were the worst hit,” Walternate said, “We barely contained the area and covered it up, but we had to evacuate the entire population to Hesse and Burgundy. Because of what that man did. The man who stole you from me.”

“That's a lot of blame to place on just one man,” Anna said.

“But it’s true, I'm afraid,” Walternate said, “When our two universes first interacted, it caused soft spots on the other side. But it was much worse here. The laws of physics were turned into mere suggestions in some places. But I'm hoping you can change all that.”

“I don't know what you heard about me, but... changing the laws of physics might be slightly above my abilities,” Anna said.

Walternate smiled. “That's fair enough. But there have been breakthroughs on the the other side in science and engineering we haven't achieved yet. And these are things that you understand. Have you taken a look at the schematics I left with your mother?”

“Yeah, I looked at them, and whatever it its, I’ve never seen it before,” Anna said, “What is it?”

“It's very old technology,” Walternate said, “My father said he found it in his youth. It's something I believe can be applied to heal the problems of this world... of your world too. I've replaced the missing parts with new equipment your grandfather helped reverse engineer, but unfortunately it still doesn't work. My engineers tell me the problem likely lies in the power source. I was hoping that you would have a look at it.”

“Of course I will,” Anna said.

“Anna, I know it wasn't easy, making the choice to come home,” Walternate said, “But I'm very glad you did.”

Heidelberg walked into the room.

“Sir, Agent Hansen is here,” he said, "She doesn't have an appointment.”

“Send her in,” Walternate said, “You may go, Major.”

Heidelberg saluted and left.

“Angie’s here?” Anna said.

Angela walked into the room and saluted to Walternate.

“Sir,” she said.

Anna stared at her, confused. Angela stared back at her.

“Do I have something in my teeth?” she said.

“No, you remind me a lot of somebody I know,” Anna said, “But your hair is different. Blond, not red.”

“Would you excuse us, please, Anna?” Walternate said. “I need to speak to Agent Hansen. I'll be out in a moment to show you around.”

Anna got up and walked out of the room.

“Agent?” Walternate said.

“We lost him at the hospital, sir,” Angela said, “We think he had help escaping.”

“That's not why you're here, is it?” Walternate said.

“No, it’s not,” Angela said.

“I told you there would be invaders coming over from the other side, but I didn't tell you they would be us, did I?” Walternate said.

“No, you did not,” Angela said, “How many lies do we need? The public’s being fed one lie, the X-Division’s being fed another, and we’re being fed a third?”

“I prefer to call them half-truths,” Walternate said, “But I apologize. It’s time you know who we’re really up against. They're our doppelgängers, alternate version of ourselves, but don't be deceived by that, Angie. They're monsters in our skin. They'll do anything, say anything to gain our trust, but they can't be trusted.”

“My cousin,” Angela said, “She disappeared when she was four, about thirty years ago. She barely knew anybody beside her parents. But she knew me. Or the other me. That’s why she was staring at me. Is she from over there?”

“No,” Walternate said, “She is your real cousin.”

“Anna?” Angela said. “The same Anna who disappeared?”

“Yes,” Walternate said, “They kidnapped her, but she’s home now, thank God. Angie, may I ask a favor of you?”

Arcadia Cafe and Bar - 10:00 AM

Angela poked at her food, not that hungry, while Olga constantly looked out the window, checking if there was anybody following them. Tesla sat quietly on the other side of the table, wearing a baseball cap for the Konstanstadt Dodgers and reading Die Zeiten. The front page headline read: “New Pentagon Opened.” The cap unnerved her a little bit. In her universe, the Dodgers had moved to Damascus from Constantinople a long time ago, so this cap would never have existed.

She was still coming to grips with the differences this universe had with hers, especially the life her counterpart lived. She took out her wallet and looked at the old picture she kept of Alexandra as a toddler. Things could’ve gone differently for her. They did go different over here for her counterpart. Demetrios was still alive, and she had raised Alexandra. This Alexandra had grown up into a brilliant young woman who had Angela’s brains and Demetrios’ smile. Angela never saw her own daughter grow up, never got the chance to raise or love her. Was this what Walter felt when he first saw Anna on the other side, after his own Anna had died?

“They had cameras everywhere,” Olga said, “We must be on the hospital surveillance tapes. They’ll be coming after us soon.”

“Which means we are fugitives,” Tesla said.

“Double breaded for a big crunch,” Walter said, munching on his fried chicken, “It's so good. Tastes just like on our side. It was Wednesday, 1975, when I happened to identify the last of the 11 secret herbs and spices.”

“Walter, I think that we should split up,” Olga interrupted, “Angela and I can look for Anna faster if it’s just us.”

“We have a larger problem,” Walter said, “Without Nick Larsen and the others, we won't be able to cross back to our side.”

“Angela can still open the door,” Tesla said, “That's her gift, is it not?”

“I don't know how much of a toll crossing over took on her,” Walter said, “You may be able to open a crack, but without the others to enhance your power…"

Tesla snapped his fingers. “That’s it, then.”

“What?” Walter said.

“We need a doorstop,” Tesla said, “Something to hold the door open where Angie has already provided a crack. You could build one, Walter.”

"A doorstop!” Walter said. “No... no, no, no, no. For starters, I'd need a particle accelerator. I don't think they exactly sell those at the local drugstore.”

“No,” Tesla said, “But I think I know where we could get one.”

“Oh!” Walter said. “Oh, of course. I'm sure your great-grandfather Nikola opened Tesla Dynamic on this side as well.”

“As a matter of fact, he did not,” Tesla said, “I did not…"

“…inherit the Reich’s largest and richest mega-corporation while I was rotting away in a padded cell in the middle of nowhere,” Walter finished.

“Oh Walter, will you please…” Tesla said.

“Hey!” Angela said. “Come on, you can work this out another time. Okay, Walter, you go build a doorstop, If you can. Olga and I will go look for Anna. Now do you have a cell phone?"

“They monitor all communications networks,” Tesla said, “That's probably how they knew about our rendezvous at Kyparades, or Zypressenpark over here. It's safest if we don't try to communicate with one another. We'll meet back at the Opera House in twelve hours.”

“Alright,” Angela said, getting up, “See you then.”

She and Olga walked out of the restaurant. Tesla turned back to Walter.

“We've accomplished a lot together over the years, Walter,” he said, “But she might just be our greatest achievement.”

Walter didn’t answer. He was too busy finishing his fried chicken.

Safe house, Sandigesvertiel (Psamathia) - 11:00 AM

Angela led Anna into an apartment room and showed her around.

“Uncle Walter thinks you'll be comfortable here,” she said.

“Thanks,” Anna said.

“So, uh, it's UV-proof glass,” Angela explained, “State-of-the-art anti-fire tech. There's viral purging, air filtration, and a gym and a pool upstairs, bar downstairs. That wall over there doubles as a TV, got all cable and premium channels. That other wall can turn transparent when you want, gives a great view of downtown with the Trans-Imperial Pyramid and the Twin Towers clearly visible. Your desk has a built-in computer with 5G network capability. Has all streaming services on it for free, maybe even a few of the best games from this decade and the last. There are some comic books on the table. You got your best ones from IC.”

Anna looked at the comics. There was one called “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” with Empire-Girl holding a lifeless Empire-Man. Next to it was “Death of Templar,” followed by “Red Lantern & Red Arrow.” Finally, there was “Empire Man: Man of Steel Returns.”

"There are also some good books on the bookshelf over there, more on that Nile Kindle there,” Angela continued, “Your sister donated a lot of stuff from her old collection, by the way. She’s really excited you’re back…”

Anna, though, barely paid attention. As Angela continued, Anna walked around the room, trying out the appliances and looking at the books and devices. She saw no TV or remote, but when she raised her hand toward the wall, it suddenly turned into a screen. INN, the Imperial News Network, was playing footage of the rededication ceremony for the New Pentagon.

The broadcast was interrupted by commercials, including an advertisement for “Hofburg” Season 11 (which looked like their equivalent of Bukoleon). There were several videotapes and Blu-Rays placed next to a VCR/Blu-Ray player plugged directly into the wall. She knelt down and looked at them. The movie titles were all quite familiar: Back to the Future (starring Erich Stolz instead of Michael Fuchs, it seemed), Clue, Templar vs Empire-Man: Law and Order, Arizona Gruber and the Hex of the Hydra, Krieg von Sternen: Episode II - Legion of Droids, Splash 7, Smokey and the Bandit: The Final Lap and Mask vs. Joker.

Angela stopped talking because Anna was just staring at her.

“Did you understand what I just said?” she asked.

“Not really,” Anna said, “All I got was that there’s a lot of cool scheiße here.”

“Anyways, Uncle Walter will send a car to pick you up at 8, take you to dinner,” Angela said, “That’s the earliest he finishes work.”

However, Anna had wandered off to the kitchen table, where an old photo album sat. She opened the album and leafed through it, finding pictures of her, Annie, and her parents dating back to the 1970s. It was undoubtably her in those photos, but she didn’t remember when she took those pictures or what she was doing. It was like she wasn’t the Anna in those pictures. And yet, she was that Anna, and that was her.

“By the way, what was it like on the other side?” Angela said. “Uncle Walter told me a little.”

“A lot like it is here,” Anna said, “Just... slightly different. It's subtle, but definitely different.”

“You know, when people find out that you're back…you’ll be famous,” Angela said, “We’ll all be famous.”

“What do you mean?” Anna said.

“Well, your disappearance,” Angela said, “It's a famous story.”

“So I'm like Amalie Earhardt?” Anna said.

“Who?” Angela said.

“Never mind,” Anna said.

“Actually, people have drawn comparisons between your disappearance and another abduction,” Angela said.

“And who would that be?” Anna said.

“Your brother, Anders,” Angela said, “He disappeared a year before you were born. Annie went into the X-Division because she wanted to find out what happened.”

“I see,” Anna said, “On the other side, Anders is still around, but Annie disappeared instead.”

“And how is he?” Angela said.

“He’s fine,” Anna said, “He goes off on tangents sometimes about aliens and Sentinel, but he’s still alive and kicking.”

“And what about Annie?” Angela said.

“He tells me he found out what’s happened to her,” Anna said, “Long story, I’ll explain later. But she’s still alive.”

Angela nodded. “And how about me? Who am I over there?”

“She’s just like you, only she didn’t dye her hair,” Anna said, “Darker in the eyes, maybe. She's always trying to make things up. Right some wrongs she never tells anybody about. Haunted, I guess, by all the people she believes she got killed. Eager to get to the bottom of things. Or maybe she's nothing like you at all.”

“And what about Demetrios?” Angela said. “And Alexandra?”

Anna thought for a moment.

“I…I don’t know much about them,” Anna said, “The other you rarely talks about them. She’s very private about these things.”

Angela’s smile disappeared, but she nodded resolutely.

“I understand,” she said, “I feel like that sometimes.”

“Anyways, thanks for the ride, Angela,” Anna said, hugging her.

“Of course,” Angela said, “It’s nice to see you again.”

Strasburg - 1:00 PM

Tesla’s self-piloting jet dropped down to subsonic speeds with a loud boom, shaking Walter out of his nap. He cursed. It was a very nice and cozy chair he was sitting in. It even dispensed Valium and some other drugs he and Willy liked when they were younger.

“We’re arriving,” Tesla said, walking over to him.

Walter looked out the window as four blade-less rotors extended from the sides of the jet and started spinning, allowing the jet to vertically descend into Strasburg…or what was left of it. The countryside surrounding the city was desolated, a mess of scorched earth and dead plants. Cars lay abandoned on the sides of what used to be highways. Some of the skyscrapers in downtown had collapsed, while others had gaping holes in their tops and sides or had their façades scorched. A thick amber-like material covered several smaller buildings clustered in the northwestern part of the city, around what would’ve been IU Strasburg.

“What happened here?” Walter asked.

“The deadliest containment breach this universe dealt with,” Tesla said, “The Rhineland and Elsass-Lothringen were already on their deathbeds, because of a massive blight which disrupted the local ecosystems, but this was the final nail in the coffin. The official story was two sisters, Susan and Sarah Patzer, blew themselves up with miniaturized dirty bombs stolen from the Malian nuclear arsenal, but the truth is they had manifested pyrokinetic abilities after participating in a Ministry of Defense experiment. The ensuing blast took place near a soft spot which had been recently quarantined, breaching containment and leading to the formation of multiple Class 2 spatial distortions around the University of Strasburg. Due to the high casualty rates and impossibility of regular coverup, the city was evacuated under the explanation that the dirty bombs had spread lethal amounts of radiation throughout the region. The entire place is now uninhabitable.”

Walter looked out over the barren landscape and the dead city. “Am I responsible for this?”

Tesla nodded sadly. “Yes, Walter. I'm afraid you are.”

They landed on what was once the quad of the University of Strasburg campus. Tesla powered down the jet, and they walked outside. The first thing Walter felt was the smell. A smoky and metallic sensation permeated the hot and dry air. The air was also dusty and dry, thin enough to make Walter breathe faster than normal. His feet crunched over the rigid remains of dead plants and cracked cobblestones, making the only noise he could hear besides Tesla’s footsteps. The entire city was completely quiet. No birds sang. No dogs barked. No insects chirped or hopped through the dead grass. No winds blew. Nobody said anything. The city was dead, and he had killed it.

Tesla forced open a rusty door and walked into a building, followed by Walter. They descended a flight of stairs and walked down a hallway, entering Walter’s lab—or rather, Walternate’s lab—at the end. Inside, the lab was filled with old plastic-covered equipment from the 70s and 80s, some of which Walter recognized. They began uncovering the equipment, searching for the right one to get them home.

“At one time, Walternate was intent on finding a means to cross between universes, just as you were thirty years ago,” Tesla said, “He didn't succeed, but... it stands to reason the technology we need might be here.”

“Didn't Walternate work with you?” Walter said. “Or, rather, the Wilhelm Tesla from this side?”

“Walternate?” Tesla said. “No. Nikola Tesla here never founded Tesla Dynamic. Only my sister was born. Over here, the other you and the other me never had occasion to meet.”

“What a shame,” Walter said, “Imagine how much money you could have made if there were two of you.”

“Inheriting Tesla Dynamic and making it into what it is today was not my idea, Walter,” Tesla said, “We both talked about borrowing this world's technologies to help our own."

“You didn't help the world, Wilhelm,” Tesla said, “You helped yourself. You pilfered this world for profit.”

“As a byproduct, yes,” Tesla said, “Let's remember, the only reason I came back over here was to prevent Glocke and his fanatics from starting a war and to stop a chain of events set into motion the day you stole Anna!”

“A little truth, if you please,” Walter said, “You say you want to prevent the war while you quietly fuel it. I know you helped craft the shape-shifters. Your design signature is all over it, as is my father’s. And my real father is dead.”

“I had little choice,” Tesla said, “If I wanted to keep tabs on Walternate, I had to remain valuable to him. This Reich isn’t a meritocracy. It’s a sham of a democracy.”

Walter sat on one of the pieces of equipment in the room.

“I've lost...seventeen years in a mental institution, Wilhelm,” Walter said, “Seventeen years! And even now, I’m, I'm still incomplete. I forget things. Uh, names. Places. Connections that I used to be able to make so easily. They just, they just dangle, just outside of my reach. I know what you did to me. I know you cut out pieces of my brain.”

“Walter…” Tesla said.

“...what kind of man could do that?” Walter said, his voice rising, “You robbed me of my memories of my wife, of my parents, of my children, of my past!”

“Walter!” Tesla said, pointing to the equipment he was sitting on. “I believe you've found what we're looking for.”

Walter lit up. “We should get started, then.”

Tesla started unplugging it. “Help me get it on the jet. We can work on it on the way back.”

Angela’s apartment - 7:00 PM

Angela entered her apartment again and set down her backpack and leather jacket on the couch in her living room. Walking to the kitchen to get something to eat, she put her gun and badge down on the countertop and opened the fridge. Inside, she found a honey pie, with a note attached to it:

Melopita pie, your favorite. Gone out with friends, be back in a bit!

-Alex

Angela smiled. She took Alexandra’s dish out and walked with it to the living room, eating it as she went. Just as she finished the pie, she heard two guns clicking behind her. Putting down the empty dish, she stood up and slowly turned around, finding Angela and Olga standing there, their guns pointed at her. Angela did a double-take at Angela, who had shorter red hair and wore a trench coat. And Olga did her hair differently.

“Hey there, other me,” Angela said, “Can I call you Angelalt or something? Saying ‘the other Angie’ or ‘other me’ is a mouthful, and ‘algae’ is disrespectful to myself, or yourself, or ourselves, or whatever. You hear that, Olga?”

“Okay, Angie, we get the point,” Olga said, “Not you, other Angie.”

“How…what…” Angelalt sputtered. “How did you—”

“We both leave our spare key in the same place,” Angela said, “I haven’t lived here for about nine years, but I still remember.”

Over Macedonia

As the supersonic jet drew closer to Konstanstadt, Tesla and Walter continued work on the equipment taken from Walternate’s lab, which now looked like a giant spring surrounding an equally large Tesla coil. Tesla finished soldering the connections on an old circuit board, and the machine beeped, one of the screens displaying a very old boot up message. They stepped back and pumped their fists.

“This should do,” Tesla said, “With some modifications, this should act as a doorstop.”

“Now, we need to simultaneously amplify and limit the molecular destabilization margins,” Walter said.

“Well, we should try not to electrocute everyone in the process,” Tesla said.

“Okay, this will reopen the crack in the door,” Walter said, “But without the others, I'm not sure if Angie will be strong enough to keep it open.”

“We have this jet’s fuel cells,” Tesla said.

“But how are we going to get it to the opera house in Chalcedon without anybody noticing?” Walter said.

“Well... leave that to me,” Tesla said.

Angelalt’s apartment

“Alright, me, I need your help, or mine, or whatever,” Angela said.

“Well, you have a funny way of asking,” Angelalt said.

“Okay, I need you to take me to my cousin, Anna,” Angela said, “You being me, I assume you know where she is.”

Angelalt’s smartphone rang, and she reached for it with one hand.

“Don’t,” Olga said.

“Show me,” Angela said, “No sudden moves.”

Angelalt showed her the phone. The caller ID simply read “Melissa.”

“Melissa’s alive?” Angela said.

“Yeah,” Angelalt said,

“She's alive?” Angela said. “What’s she like?”

“Well, the last few years have been hard for her,” Angelalt said, “My brother Bill lost his wife in childbirth fourteen years ago. I lost him a little bit after that as well. You still have them?”

“And a nephew, Matthew,” Angela said, “He’s thirteen and a half.”

“Angie, stop,” Olga said.

“And how’s Demetrios over there?” Angelalt said. “And Alexandra?”

“I haven’t seen Alexandra since she was three,” Angela said, “My Demetrios died fourteen years ago.”

“Angie, she’s stalling,” Olga said.

“How’s Anders?” Angelalt asked. “Anna told me he was still around on your side.”

“He’s fine,” Angela said, “But you’re implying you know where Anna is. I need to speak with her now. She’s in danger here, and she needs to understand that.”

“You don’t understand, do you?” Angelalt said. “Anna wanted to come home. This universe is her home. We are her family.”

“No, we are her family,” Angela said, “And family always looks out for one another. Please, I need to speak with her. You have to trust me. I’m you.”

Thrace

“By the way, you haven't answered my question,” Walter said.

Tesla looked up from the doorstop device. “What question?”

“Why did you remove my memories?” Walter said.

“I had my reasons,” Tesla said.

“Willy…” Walter said.

“Walter…” Tesla said. “Let the past be the past. We’re descending into Konstanstadt and dropping below Mach 1. We should start forming a plan.”

Angelalt’s apartment

“Okay, fine,” Angelalt said, slowly reaching into her jacket pocket, “I’ll help, if that’s what you really want.”

“Okay, but please keep your hands where you are,” Angela said, “Olga cover me.”

“I’m just getting my keys,” Angelalt said.

“Then give me the jacket, and I’ll get them,” Olga said.

Angela took Angelalt’s purse and rummaged in it for her spare pistol. She always kept her backup there, so her counterpart probably did as well. Only she didn’t find a gun. She heard two guns clicking and saw Angelalt pointing two guns at her and Olga.

“Put it down,” Angela said, “If you shoot and kill me, is it technically a murder, a suicide, or a murder-suicide? I don’t want to test that out, by the way.”

“You keep your backup gun in your purse, don’t you?” Angelalt said. “I have two spares. One in my jacket, one on my ankle.”

“You shouldn’t have given your ankle gun to Anders,” Olga muttered.

“How would I know I’d have to use it against myself?!” Angela said.

Ah the classic 'I know alternatenate me' trope. Hell of a way to introduce the two Angies :D

After reading the Annionaverse AAR, it had me thinking on what happened at the end that led to Stellaris and by god if that was what you were planning all along then Walter truly fucked things up!

That would be spoilers.;)

Walter couldn't have known how severe the consequences would be, but it is good that he's seeing the damaged he caused in this universe. Loving his dynamic with Tesla so far. For that matter, I quite like Angelalt.

We'll be seeing much more of her in the coming updates, just you wait.:D

I'm a bit curious, but what would be the equivalent to this flag here since you have discussed the patriot movement extensively in the 90s and you did disscusis plans for a Tea Party equilent wtih @J_Master if I'm correct?

I’m also wondering about this flag as well since it is related to it as well, being one of the early flags used in The American Independence (because that is a more accurate title than revolutionary) war? Maybe these could see use in the Maximist Wars and WW2?

There isn't one. The patriot movement/Tea Party wouldn't have the same symbol, but maybe something else I don't know yet.

It would probably be a phoenix or German imperial eagle motif with a Maximist slogan underneath. I really don't know, because the Maximist Wars were more equivalent to the Carlist Wars than the American Revolution.

Alright so continuing on how Mass Effect might look like in TTL, Cerberus is given a more background lore here instead of just a shadowy terrorrist organization, they still have the OTL side quests which eventually connects to a specific quest involving Shepard and crew investigating an already dead First Contact veteran (OTL Mass Effect Wikia says that Armistan Banes who was supposed to be connected with the Cerberus arc in 1) and ends with a message filled with the Cerberus Manifesto and a warning where they will be watching Shepard's actions, thus letting players know these generic enemies that they farm XP points on just might be a bigger fish after all.

Further into the game the player is treated to how shaky the Citadel Council's rule have become which had continued even before the First Contact War, with scattered dialogues of complete chaos in Turian separtists colonies, warlords fighting over Aria T'Loak's hold on the Terminus Systems (an analog to the chaos in modern Eimerica), Aria T'Loak being MUCH more than the big fish in the Terminus since her status here is a mash between Witko and TTL's Sadam (There'll be fan memes of T'Loak being Witko:p), the entry of the Geth causing major concerns and the Batarians leaving the council and becoming a rogue state sometime before the events of 1. The scenery of the citadel also drastically changes as you progress as more ships appear in the background as well as armed forces from the big three start to be seen around the map while commenting on your progress or that of an upcoming conflict.

As I said, the first game proceeds like OTL and lets the players decide which mission to take first as well as sidequests to level all the way till 60. Some of these sidequests wil help build up Shepard's reputation and that of humanity while two lore-specific side quests has Shepard hunt down a death cult that terrorized a small colony and finding eerily crude drawings that are very similar to the ship that attacked Eden Prime (If this mission was done after assaulting the antigonist's base but before going back to the citadel for the third time the dialogue will change to reflect the revelation) alongside an end message of uncertainty as said message implies this was just ONE out of many. The other quest will involve the OTL sidequest where you scan the keepers though with a twist in the end where after completing the mission and checking your personal terminal you'll get an email from an unknown sender where they will be watching your actions while judging what you role would be in the 'conflict against the bringers of death.' Like the other quest, if you managed to complete the scan the keepers mission after assaulting Virmire BUT just before activating the cutscene that has the council impound your vehicle you'll still get the message but the end paragraph instead of being vague would be 'You know the truth commander, and in doing so have attracted the Sentinels. We look forward to further cooperation.'

As players get to the climax of the game before the second boss fight (first if Shepard has enough diplo points to convince Saren to shoot himself in the head to resist the indoctrination) the big space cavalry scene where the Alliance arrives will be decided by the player, Save the Council who are in the Destiny Ascencion? Or ignore their pleas and focus mainly on Sovereign. Depending on who your party members are at this moment both of them could either have conflicting opinions or agree on one but it's up to the player to decide.

Saving the Council of course treats you to an epic 'Rohirrim'esque cutscene where the Alliance does everything it can to save the dreadnaught(like in OTL). This will have severe reprecussions to humanity's fighting chance by Mass Effect 3 but we'll get to that eventually :p

Choosing to go after Sovereign and ignoring the pleas will make the cutscene where the Alliance fleet arrives more somber and bittersweet, as well as treating you to the Destiny Ascension blowing up(Just like in OTL), this decision also has severe reprecussions once the reapers arrive plus how the rest of the trilogy well proceed.

So there are two endings that players can get in 1, Saving the Council will be the same like in OTL, the Alliance becomes an honorary member of the Council and unofficially acts as the fourth member (Though by 2 this can change), Sovereign lies defeated but the station is scarred. Shepard then chooses who gets to be the 'honorary' councillor between his mentor Captain Anderson and the Ambassador Udina (choosing one WILL be s factor in 3 unlike OTL) and the Asari councillor commenting on a shadow of war looming over the galaxy.

Now if the council died however the ending is much more different as with the deaths of the council faith upon the old government has become shaky as the big three are reeling from the aftermath, the rest of the galaxy turn towards Humanity who are forced to assume a role of de-facto faction in control of the citadel. Captain Anderson comments here that the eyes of the galaxy is on Humanity and the next few years will be the greatest test the entire species as a whole has ever taken since the rise of fascism and equalism. A council made up of humanity's finest (plus a Hohenzollern family member to oversee it) are then created to bring order left after this attack. Shepard's actions during the course of the game will either hinder or help the human council's efforts to intigrate themselves into galactic politics.

The game ends with the normandy flying away into the stars as the credits roll.

And that's all. I'm gonna work on two once i can remember my ideas. Hope you find them good Zen :D

Depending on the player's actions, Cerberus might show up again throughout the rest of the game and the two sequels, acting as a secondary antagonist distracting Shepard from dealing with the Reapers and other threats.
The population and communities of the Citadel could also change as the player progresses. Different characters might appear or leave, shops might open or close, and certain communities (refugees, traders, and soldiers) could arrive or depart as the Citadel becomes more militarized.
As I said, the first game proceeds like OTL and lets the players decide which mission to take first as well as sidequests to level all the way till 60. Maybe the death cult and the unknown sender could be related to Cerberus?

Or ignore their pleas and focus mainly on Sovereign. Depending on who your party members are at this moment both of them could either have conflicting opinions or agree on one but it's up to the player to decide.
Maybe if the player made certain choices in random sidequests before, there could also be a third option allowing you to both save the Council and go after Sovereign? Similar to the "hidden" option at the end of ME3.
Saving the Council of course treats you to an epic 'Rohirrim'esque cutscene where the Alliance does everything it can to save the dreadnaught(like in OTL). This will have severe reprecussions to humanity's fighting chance by Mass Effect 3 but we'll get to that eventually :p
Maybe the consequences could appear sooner, possibly in 2.
This could also weaken the reapers, though at the cost of some potential allies and Shepard's reputation.
This would give the player more diplomatic options, and in future games they could rely more on the other Council members to provide troops and equipment. But this is balanced out by the Reapers becoming more powerful in the short term.
Now if the council died however the ending is much more different as with the deaths of the council faith upon the old government has become shaky as the big three are reeling from the aftermath, the rest of the galaxy turn towards Humanity who are forced to assume a role of de-facto faction in control of the citadel. Shepard's actions during the course of the game will either hinder or help the human council's efforts to intigrate themselves into galactic politics.
This choice would initially alienate the other species but also boost humanity's clout and power, meaning Shepard has to rely more on human troops and equipment, which have certain advantages and disadvantages. This is balanced out by the Reapers becoming slightly weaker in future games.
The game ends with the normandy flying away into the stars as the credits roll.
Maybe the Normandy could be called the Gibraltar? That was the Hohenzollern equivalent of D-Day.

The Other Side, Part 4

7:05 PM

“Now slowly put your guns down on the table,” Angelalt demanded.

“I thought we had an agreement,” Angela said.

“You know, I don't know what you are, but you are nothing like me,” Angelalt said, “My cousin was right.”

She tapped her Bluetooth earpiece, taking one gun off Olga. “Call X-Division. This is Agent Hansen reporting a—”

Olga tackled her, and the two women went flying. Angelalt’s guns clattered out of her hands, and her earpiece fell off and disconnected. Despite losing her advantage, she continued fighting, viciously punching Olga in the face. Olga cursed.

“Wow, you can hit really hard, Angie,” she said, before punching Angelalt back, “Sorry for beating you up! Or not you!”

“Technically it’s not me!” Angela shouted.

At that moment, Angelalt’s phone rang. She grabbed it and answered as she punched Olga again.

“Hello?” she said. “Hi, sweetie. How are things going? I’m in the middle of something. Having a conversation with some friends from work. I’ll get back to you later. You too, bye.”

She hung up, and Angela immediately punched her.

“Ahh!” Angelalt groaned.

She kicked Olga in the side and rolled away from her, getting to her feet. She wiped some blood away from her mouth.

“You can really hit hard, Olga,” she said, “I never thought that was in you.”

“Yeah, being a KGB assassin tends to bring that out of you,” Olga said.

“A what?!” Angelalt said.

“Don’t move!” Angela shouted, aiming her gun. “I’m still armed, you know!”

Angelalt whirled toward her and lashed out with a spinning kick, knocking the gun out of Angela’s hands and slamming her against a wall. Olga charged at Angelalt, but Angelalt delivered a roundhouse punch to Olga’s head, knocking her out. Angelalt relentlessly punched and kicked Angela as she lay on the floor, stepping on her trench coat to pin her down.

“Trench coats aren’t good for combat, you know,” Angelalt said, “Who gave you this?”

“My grandpa Hans,” Angela said, “He’s dead too.”

Angelalt briefly wavered, trying to process the news. In that split second, Angela grabbed a lamp and smashed it against Angelalt’s head, knocking her unconscious. She got to her feet and fixed her trench coat, looking down at her unconscious counterpart.

“This feels so wrong on so many levels,” she said.

Olga slowly stirred. She pulled herself to her feet and clutched her head, cursing in Russian.

“That really hurt,” Olga said.

“Sorry,” Angela said.

“Hey, like you said, it’s not technically you,” Olga said, “But I was really surprised by what she could do. You sure you can’t do that too?”

Angela noticed Angelalt’s earpiece buzzing on the carpet. She picked it up and answered it.

“Uh, hello?” she said.

“Hey Angie, it’s me,” the alternate Olga said, “Tried your earpiece a couple times. You okay?”

“Yeah, I’m good,” Angela said, “What's up, Olga?”

Olga stared at her weirdly.

“Got a power surge at the Minister’s old lab in Strasburg,” the alternate Olga said, “So Kurtz wants us to go remote a drone to check it out. You sure you're okay?”

“The Minister just called,” Angela said, "He, uh, he wants us to move Anna Humboldt. Apparently, she's not safe where she is.”

“They found her?” Olga said. “That place in Sandigesvertiel?"

“Yeah,” Angela said, knowing instantly where Anna was.

“I’m picking you up,” Olga said, hanging up.

Angela put down the earpiece and turned to Olga.

“Was that me?” Olga said.

“I think so,” Angela said, taking Angelalt’s keys and Show Me, “Take her car, and meet me at what should be Anders’ place in Psamathia. They’re holding her there.”

“If we’re going to break Anna out, we’re going to have to blend in,” Olga said, looking down at the unconscious Angelalt.

Angela immediately knew what Olga was saying.

“Oh, no,” she said, “We are not doing that.”

Olga just stood there.

“We don’t have much time,” she said, “Knowing myself, my counterpart will be here in less than five minutes.”

Angela sighed. Then she took off her trench coat and handed it to Olga.

“Keep it safe,” she said, “Now where’s the hair dye?”

Olga ran off to get the hair dye, while Angela took her counterpart’s phone and unlocked it. Despite her counterpart having a more advanced phone, she still used the same password. She dialed Alexandra’s number.

“Hello?” Alexandra said.

“Hey Alex, it’s me,” Angela said, “What do you need?”

“Just letting you know I’ll be home later than usual,” Alexandra said, “We’re having a good time so far.”

“Alright, sure, you go have fun,” Angela said, “Just not too much.”

Alexandra laughed. “Sure thing, Mom. Bye.”

“Bye,” Angela said, hanging up.

Safe house (Anders’ apartment), Psamathia - 7:10 PM

Anna sat alone at her desk, testing the equipment Walternate had sent over. Her desk computer was set to record her findings.

“Object is totally unresponsive,” she said, “But there's nothing wrong with it. It’s old, but there’s no... obvious damage to the structure. And yet... somehow, it just feels incomplete. Alright, this’ll sound crazy. In fact... this is a little crazy. But what if... the object was symbiotic in nature? Which is to say that it wasn't entirely mechanical, that it needed an... organic interface?”

Downtown Konstanstadt - 7:15 PM

The alternate Olga’s driverless electric car zipped through the rush-hour traffic of downtown, making its way north from Deuteron. Angela glanced in the mirror, hoping her blond hair passed for Angelalt’s. Olga didn’t seem to notice. She sat opposite Angela, reading on her smartphone.

“So how much do you know?” Olga said. “How did they find her?”

“I don't know,” Angela said.

“Wow,” Olga said, “After all these years. Can you imagine when the tabloids get hold of this? I wonder what they’re going to say about us, about Annie and you. I mean, you’re her cousin.”

“You know, I think it has something to do with why these people have come from the other side,” Angela said.

“Yeah, I suppose so,” Olga said.

“Have we got any new leads?” Angela said.

“No, nothing new,” Olga said, “Louise probably told you already, Angie, but this job isn't what it was ten years ago. You’ve got alternate universes and counterparts. I mean, it just, just wasn't part of my training, right? I mean, how are we supposed to fight these people? Truth is, Angie, this makes me feel obsolete, you know?”

Angela’s apartment - 7:20 PM

Angelalt woke up. She found she was bound to a chair, and her jacket was missing. Cursing, she fished a small knife out of her sleeve to start cutting at the ropes.

Safe house (Anders’ apartment) - 7:25 PM

Anna picked up a hand-shaped component.

“The parameters are human... a reflection of the human genome,” she said, “The spectrum isn't random at all. In fact, the specificity of the configuration would seem to suggest that the object would only respond to a subset of people.”

She tied further and reconnected some wires. The component started moving.

“And a narrow subset at that,” she said.

She touched the component, and it reacted to her touch, clamping on her hand like a glove.

“A subset of one,” she said, “Me.”

At that moment, the doorbell rang.

“Agents Hansen and Kirova, X-Division,” an intercom chimed, with their picture appearing on the computer.

“And just when I found something,” Anna muttered.

She got up and opened the door to greet Angela and Olga.

“I’m Anna Humboldt,” she said, “It's a pleasure to meet you…again, sort of. Come on in. What can I do for you?”

Angela and Olga walked inside.

“Uh, Frau Humboldt, we’re concerned for your safety,” Angela said, handing Wilhelm’s picture to her.

“What's this?” Anna said.

“This was given to me by an acquaintance of your father,” Angela said, “A man he believes is an angel named Wilhelm.”

“An angel?” Anna said.

“What’s this about angels?” Olga said.

“He gave it to me to warm me about what would happen to you if you ever returned here,” Angela said.

“What's going on?” Olga said.

“He wants you to know your friends are here and they have come to keep you safe,” Angela said.

“Hey, Angie, what the hell are you talking about?” Olga said.

She heard a noise and turned around to see Olga aiming a gun at her.

“It’s not the way I envisioned our reunion, and I’m terribly sorry,” Olga said, “Please don’t take this personally.”

She pistol-whipped her counterpart, and she was instantly knocked out.

“Well, that was surprisingly easy,” she said, “I expected myself to put up a fight.”

“Anna, it’s us,” Angela said, “We’re here to get you out of here.”

“Yeah, I kind of figured,” Anna said, “Let’s go.”

“Wait, I thought you wanted to stay here,” Olga said, “That’s why you came back, right?”

“He lied to me,” Anna said, “He told me I could heal the problems of this world. My father told me all the problems out there started when Walter came over and stole me. And that, now that I was back, I was going to help fix it. But bringing me back was never about fixing this universe. It was about destroying yours.”

“I'm sorry,” Angela said.

“How long did you know?” Anna said.

“Since last week,” Angela said, “Olga learned it a couple days ago.”

“Don’t worry, Angie,” Anna said, “I won’t let them do this.”

“I don’t think he can,” Angela said, “I mean, not without you. Anna, you don’t belong here.”

“Yeah, I don’t belong here,” Anna said, “I don’t belong there, either.”

“Yes, you do,” Angela said, “I have too many reasons why you should come back. To, to fight the shapeshifters, to take care of Walter, to, to save the world. But in the end, you really have to come back. Because this may be where you’re from, but your home is with us over there, and we’re your family. And family never leaves each other behind.”

Anna stared at her.

“Can we save the motivational speeches for when we get back?” she finally said. “Do we really need to spend time on monologues right now?”

“Yeah, she has a point,” Olga said.

“Okay, grab the blueprints and we need to go,” Angela said.

“Already downloaded them onto my phone,” Anna said, “You have no idea how fast 5G is.”

X-Division - 7:30 PM

The elevator dinged, and Walternate marched out, Angelalt at her side. They stormed into the middle of the situation room.

“Colonel Kurtz, listen up,” he ordered, “I need everyone's attention, now!”

Kurtz looked up from his computer. “Yes, Herr Minister?”

“I want all surveillance focused on finding a fugitive,” Walternate said.

“What fugitive, sir?” Kurtz said.

“Me,” Angelalt said.

Diana typed quickly on her terminal, which beeped after a few seconds.

“I've got her,” she said, “Her Show Me just passed the auto scan checkpoint at Sector 47.”

“They're heading back to the Opera House,” Walternate realized.

The terminal beeped again.

“I have a civilian aircraft flying into restricted airspace,” Diana said, “Sector 47 again.”

“Alright, people, let's move!” Kurtz shouted. “This is not a drill!”

Alarms blared, and the agents scrambled out of the room.

Opera House, Neustadt - 8:00 PM

Tesla’s jet landed roughly on the street, which thankfully was empty because of the military barricades set up around the opera house. As soon as the engines powered down, Tesla

and Walter opened the door and looked around.

“They should be here by now,” Walter said.

“They'll be here,” Tesla said, dragging the doorstopper over to the door, “Now help me get this thing inside, Walter!”

“Oh, okay,” Walter said.

As they hauled the doorstopper out of the jet and to the entrance, a car screeched to a halt in front of them, and Angela, Olga, and Anna got out.

“Hello, Anna,” Tesla said, “I’m Wilhelm Tesla. Haven't seen you in many years. You're holding up better than I would have thought.”

“What's a little universe hopping between friends?” Anna said.

“That's not what I meant,” Tesla said.

Sirens blared several blocks away, and down the street, they saw headlights approaching. The X-Division had arrived.

“Okay, so what do we do?” Angela said.

Tesla ejected some of the jet’s small hydrogen fuel cells from a port on the back and handed them to Anna and Walter.

“Anna, help your father get this device inside,” he said, “Use these cells to power it up. Angela, Olga, and I will hold them off.”

Anna ran over to Walter.

“On the count of three,” she said, “One, two, three!”

They lifted up the doorstopper and carried it inside the building. Cars and transport vans stopped on both sides of the street, and agents got out and took up firing positions, blocking their escape. Not that they were going to escape that way, hopefully. Angela and Olga drew their guns, while Tesla took out a remote control and pushed several buttons. Turrets emerged from the side of his private jet and opened fire, raking the cars with automatic weapons fire and forcing the agents to take cover.

“I supplied X-Division with the 76 model,” he said.

He drew a gun and shot at a car, which exploded.

“This is the 77,” he said.

“Nice show and all, but we’re not here to buy your stuff!” Olga said.

The turrets stopped to reload, and the agents advanced again, returning fire. Angela and Olga ducked behind a mailbox and loaded their guns.

“Just like old times, right?” Angela said.

“There was never this much action in the old times!” Olga said.

Angela got up and fired at the X-Division agents, while Olga rolled between the mailbox and an adjacent car. From there she got off several shots at their attackers. Then she bolted from behind the car and charged at the nearest squad of agents. They didn’t see her coming until she had already pistol-whipped the nearest one and punched another in the head. She shot a third agent in the stomach and then kicked another in the side. In just seconds, she had taken out the squad. By then, the other X-Division agents had noticed her and trained their weapons on her. The turrets finished reloading and fired on those agents, cutting down dozens more and allowing Olga to retreat.

Inside, Walter and Anna hauled the doorstopper onto the stage and plugged it into a power outlet. They Anna began connecting the fuel cells to the doorstopper, while Walter initiated the boot up.

“Anna, I don't even know where to begin,” Walter said, “I never meant for this to happen.”

“How do we do this, Walter?” Anna snapped, still working on the fuel cells.

Outside, Tesla tossed Angela several grenades.

“Phosphorous grenades,” he explained, “Be careful. They’re prototypes and unstable.”

“What do you mean unstable?” Angela said.

“Just don’t jostle them too much,” Tesla said.

Machine gun fire raked the walls and sidewalk, and they took cover behind the mailbox. Angela looked to her left and saw Olga pinned behind the jet. The turrets jammed, and the X-Division agents advanced on her position.

“Cover me,” he said, running toward the jet.

Angela blindly fired from around the mailbox, trying to keep the enemy agents at bay. Tesla reached the jet and handed a grenade to Olga. He pressed a button on his remote, and the jet engines started. The craft began to lift off. Up the street, Annie tapped on her earpiece and loaded her assault rifle.

“Understood,” she said.

She turned to her team. “We move on my mark!”

Kurtz and Angelalt stood next to them, also listening on their earpieces.

“Yes, Herr Minister,” Kurtz said, “I understand.”

He nodded to Angelalt, who ran in the direction of the firefight, Annie’s squad behind her. As Olga escorted Tesla into the building, Angela continued shooting at the X-Division agents, keeping their attention focused on her. However, her gun jammed, and she cursed.

“Frak,” she said.

She took out a grenade and pulled the pin just as Olga pushed Tesla inside and looked back.

“Angie!” she shouted. “Behind you!”

Angela turned around and saw Angelalt standing behind her, her gun raised. Angela instinctively lobbed the grenade at a nearby car. The ensuing explosion engulfed the entire block, throwing Olga against the wall. Weakly opening her eyes, Olga saw everything was now on fire. The surrounding buildings had their windows burned and façades riddled with shrapnel, while the cars had been blasted to charred wrecks. The X-Division agents had retreated to a safe distance.

Angela ran over to her.

“Olga, can you hear me?” she said. “Olga.”

Olga coughed and pulled herself to her feet.

“Oh, thank god,” Angela said.

“Felt worse,” Olga said, “What the yebat did you do?”

“Phosphorus grenade,” Angela said, “Blew everything up, bought us a couple minutes. We have to go.”

They ran into the building, where Anna, Walter, and Tesla waited beside the doorstopper, which glowed light red.

“Walter, they're here,” Anna said.

“Is it working?” Angela said.

“Yes,” Walter said, “It's opening a crack in the door, but we don't have enough power to keep it open yet.”

“Yes, we can do it,” Tesla said.

“We can’t,” Walter said, “Angie doesn't have the power, and, and I haven't thought of a solution.”

“Walter,” Tesla said.

“Please don't argue with me, Wilhelm!” Walter said. “Always thinking you're smarter than me. You were born into Tesla Dynamic. I had to work my way up to your level!”

“Walter, the machine is still powering up!” Tesla said, pointing at the console. “It will take a couple minutes before it reaches full power!”

“We don’t have a couple minutes,” Walter said, “And even if that was the case, it requires somebody to remain on this side to activate the machine.”

“Walter, I will stay here,” Tesla said, “I will activate the machine and hold them off long enough to complete the sequence.”

“You will die here,” Walter said.

“Then I die getting you home,” Tesla said.

Walter sighed. “I should never have doubted you.”

“It's okay, Walter,” Tesla said, “You always were as stubborn as a donkey with a nail in his head. Now, start the sequence.”

Walter pushed a button, and the doorstopper hummed. A glimmering sphere of energy started to form around them. Tesla turned around and took out his remote.

“Thank you, old friend,” Walter said.

“Walter…” Tesla said. “You asked me why I took out part of your brain. I did it because you asked me to. Because of what you were becoming.”

The doors swung open, and several X-Division agents stormed in, guns drawn.

“Freeze!” they shouted.

As the energy sphere expanded and brightened and Walter, Anna, Angela, and Olga dematerialized from this universe, Tesla pushed a button on his remote control. Outside, his hovering jet turned toward the opera house and hurled itself at it, slamming into the building and exploding just as the group disappeared. The energy dissipated, and they found themselves back in the abandoned opera house of their own universe.

Walter’s lab, Strasburg - May 11, 2010, 3:00 AM

Gene mooed in the corner. On one of the tables, Anders put down another plate of strudel in front of Anna, who sighed.

“Really?” she said. “This is the third strudel, Anders. Are you trying to kill me?”

“Sorry,” Anders said, “I’ve been taking up cooking lately. Alex’s very picky about his food, and Di’s a terrible cook. I’ve been baking almost nonstop for the last couple days, because of you. So don’t be surprised when I send you a bill, sis.”

“No, I should be apologizing,” Anna said, “Sorry for doing…all of this.”

“That’s fine,” Anders said, “At least we have you back.”

“Hey, Anders, you mind taking Walter home?” Anna said. “I need to take a walk.”

“Sure,” Anders said.

He got up and led Walter to the door.

“Good night, Walter,” Anna said.

“Anna, you are back now, aren't you?” Walter said. “You’re, you're not leaving again?”

“I'm trying to see this your way, Walter,” Anna said, “I can't. But... you did cross universes twice to save my life. So that has to count for something, right?”

Walter smiled. “Thank you Anna. My daughter.”

Antiques shop, Constantinople - 8:00 AM

Angela walked into the store and up to the counter.

“May I help you, gorgeous?” the store owner said.

“I hope so,” Angela said, “I’m looking for a typewriter.”

The store owner gestured to the typewriters on the counter. “You’re in luck.”

“No, an Eligerica 251,” Angelalt said.

The store owner nodded. “It’s in the back.”

Angelalt headed into a backroom and sat down at the Eligerica 251. She rolled a sheet of paper into the typewriter and began typing.

INFILTRATION SUCCESSFUL.

AWAITING ORDERS

Ministry of Defense, Unification Island, Konstanstadt

Walternate walked down a dark corridor and approached a window. He raised the protective blind on the window and turned on the light, revealing Angela sitting inside. She got to her feet and banged on the door as soon as she saw Walternate’s face.

“You!” she shouted. “Let me out of here! I know you can hear me!”

Walternate just studied her quietly.

“I know you can hear me!” Angela shouted. “Let me out of here, or I’ll have another cadaver to electrocute when they come back for me!”

Walternate closed the blind, turned off the light, and walked away. Angela’s tone quickly turned to one of desperation.

“No, let me out!” she cried. “DAMNIT!”

Well frak , it would appear Tesla's sacrifice just might be in vain.

On a side note I hope that cow survives, Gene's growing on me and I'd like her to be X-Division's unofficial animal mascot :p

So I have found this mention from awhile ago (page #70) and I was wondering if you could put a mention of the Millennium Arch in Vienna in the 2000s summary when we get to it?
Building it in Vienna as a memoriral to World War III (the Gateway to Freedom, I'd call it) would be great idea. It could also be built in 2000 as the Millennium Arch to commemorate the new millennium in addition to being a war memorial. As for the Burj Khalifa, I might build it somewhere else. Maybe I'll use it to build a certain tower in Constantinople that replaces a certain two other towers after [REDACTED].;)

I'm wondering what did Woodrow Winston do in TTL since you did make TTL's Ronald Reagan related to him in someway. You actually said this in relation to Ronald and Woodrow Winston in chapter 432.
. In the Reich, Senator Roland Wilson, after ousting his predecessor Helmut Schmidt, became the first imperial chancellor from Hibernia (the city of Tipperary) and the second chancellor not from Germania (after Markos Angelos, which led to some interesting comparisons being drawn). Wilson, the grandson of the Britannian war hawk (and later Angeloi supporter) Woodrow Wilson, was also the first divorced person to assume the nation’s highest appointed office (he remarried in 1952).
I know that Woodrow Wilson did die in 1924 in OTL, but since this AAR has prolonged the lives of several people like Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethovan and Erich Ludendorff before, I think it would'nt be a stretch for Wilsion to live until the 30s and 40s. Plus Woodrow could've still supported Angelos in WW1 since Angelos was polticaly active at that time (in fact, I'd put Angelos's poltical activity as far back as 1910, since that was the year the fascist movement was founded). Heck, maybe Wilson might've been actually a founding member of the Angeloi considering that Wilson was supported by the KKK in OTL (the pro KKK film Birth of a Nation did after all credit him as a historical source since he was a historian before WW1) and Wilson was a beliver in Southern Lost Cause revisionism. In fact, Wilson would probally have been responsible for integrating some parts of Maximism into Angeloi fascism and promoting Maximsit Revisionism into the Angeloi platform, more about that soon. Maybe we could add Wilson to the list of potential bios if this stuff is the case?

Anyhow, I was wondering how much would Angelism be a contiunism from Maxism? Considering how Nationalistic the Maximist themselves here, I imagine some ascpects of Maxismism would find themeselves into the Angeloi platform, espically when Angelos used the Maximist branch for his puppet monarchy, which probably encouraged Neo-Maximists to integrate themselves into the Angeloi, kind of like how some Carlists supported Franco against the Republicans in OTL. I imagine Angeloi propganda promoting a "Lost Cause" revisionism towards the Maximists in order to demonize the Loyalists and Siegfriedists.

Also what comparisons would people make between Angelos and Ronald Wilsion anyway here? I imagine Ronald is probally the most controversial Chancellor the Reich has had after WW2 (I would'nt consider Scheel controversial since he is universally despised by both sides of political spectrum I assume.:p) especially with the causes of WW3, which are probably hotly debated here, especially with how killed Gorbechev (I imagine there are a lot of conspiracy theries about that since nobody knows the Smoking Man's role in that). His war hawkishness would certainly be criticized by a lot of people now and could be blamed for starting the war.

I also found this post on this TTL's Oktoberfest fest and I'm wondering if you could expand on this a little more for discussing what Oktoberfest would be like here?
I would assume that the Roman Carnival is a mix of Maslenitsa (given the Orthodox influence and the Russians who immigrated to the Reich during the medieval period and World War I), the German/Dutch Carnival, and other Catholic Carnivals, with the most Catholic symbols and practices replaced with Orthodox ones. So basically the German/Austrian/Swiss Carnival, with multiple regional variants incorporating pagan influences. Also, everybody drinks beer. Imagine Oktoberfest except on a national scale (as if it was extended from October into November).:D As for the Neurhomanian Carnival, it's the mainland's Carnival except turned up to eleven.;)

Also nice work @TWR97 with those Mass Effect Ideas. Definitely looking forward to your ideas for the rest of the trilogy.:)

Ooh, snap. Didn't see that closer coming. What will Angelalt think of her loved ones' counterparts? Her boss Walternate is a man battling with his own mind, her husband is dead and child gone, and Anders is a big part of her life here.

As for Tesla and Walter, that also surprised me. Considering what Walternate is like, I feel like they made the right decision.

Well frak , it would appear Tesla's sacrifice just might be in vain.

If I killed the cow, it would be animal cruelty. I'd rather not.:D
So I have found this mention from awhile ago (page #70) and I was wondering if you could put a mention of the Millennium Arch in Vienna in the 2000s summary when we get to it?
I'll see about it.
Maybe we could add Wilson to the list of potential bios if this stuff is the case?
Wilson would've been a founding member of the Angeloi, but once the Angeloi began breaking meritocratic norms, he would reconsider his loyalty and instead become a political neutral.
The Angeloi just used the Maximists as a means to an end. Angelos wanted the Maximists to be a royal puppet, even though he himself didn't believe in the monarchy. If he won the war, he would've deposed them and made himself the official head of state. It also helped him get the neo-Maximists on his side.
Roland Wilson would be initially linked to the Angeloi due to his relation with Woodrow, but he would soon establish his own identity and distance himself from the Angeloi (it helps he's a good actor). There are still conspiracy theories that he killed Gorbachev and started WW3.
I also found this post on this TTL's Oktoberfest fest and I'm wondering if you could expand on this a little more for discussing what Oktoberfest would be like here?
I really don't know. I've kind of run out of ideas for holidays. Maybe someone else with a better idea of Oktoberfest could explain?
Ooh, snap. Didn't see that closer coming. What will Angelalt think of her loved ones' counterparts? Her boss Walternate is a man battling with his own mind, her husband is dead and child gone, and Anders is a big part of her life here.

Angelalt would quickly get annoyed with Anders' antics. Maybe that would expose her.:p

@CaptainAlvious thanks for reading em, most of these ideas were notes of mine for an abandoned ME fanfic, glad you find em interesting too :D

Now we move on to Mass Effect 2, like in OTL, the game begins with the Illusive Man and TTL's Miranda Lawson talking about the end of the previous game with Lawson either commenting on humanity being accepted by the galactic community or them becoming the new boss in town. TIM of course comments that the Reapers are the true enemy, the rest of the convo ends with Shepard's role in the coming conflict as the logo of Cerberus appears on TIM's holo screen (Players who have imported their save and did the Cerberus sidequests will immediately recognize em)

The opening text then summarizes the end of the previous game and despite evidence, the council (Be it the Citadel or the human led one) tries to calm things down by sending the Gibraltar on a routine mission to eliminate the remaining geth outposts that remained after Sovereign's destruction. As OTL of course the Gibraltar is ambushed by sn unknown spacraft culminating in the deaths of several crew during the first blast, among them Navigator Karl Pressley (Thus giving the players a glimpse on the 2nd game's high stakes situation). Players then control Shepard and would converse with the Virmire survivors if rescue will come, and after a word of assurance (or sarcasm) they go off to rescue the ship's pilot Joker.

Much like OTL, the mysterious ship blasts through the Gibraltar just as Shepard launches Joker's escape pod at the cost of them getting left behind. The ship explodes and Shepard is thrown away with a piece of the ship's hull however the air around their helmet gets a leak, the camera slowly pans away as Shepard attempts to fix the leak only to end up not moving just as their body and the hull they're in enter the atmosphere. A mournful piano nusic plays while this happens, and then cue the title screen. (Two days after the initial game is released to the public, players will recieve a code that activates a free copy of a Mass Effect comic that covers over the two year skip after the attack on the Gibraltar. The same occurs like in OTL with Liara managing to rescue Shepard, who unlike in OTL is merely in a coma though their body is heavily damaged and the body being reluctantly given to Cerberus)

Lawson's voice is heard as a brief cutscene shows small machines fixing a presumably weakened body of a person, then players can then import their Shepard's face is recontruct them, same goes with their class as their highest attained level from the previous game is converted with them getting a level 5 if their previous level had been from 55 to 60, they can change their class too.

After that another cutscene follows between Lawson and another character attempting to calm Shepard down before being put back into unciousness. The rest of the opening level proceeds as in OTL with the player getting back into the action (Shepard then comments on their confusion of the weapon needing ammo of all things), being briefed on how he was brought back, the revelation of Cerberus being the one that did it and then getting out of the station after Lawson's establishing character moment on killing the traitor.

Shepard's conversation with TIM then proceeds just as in OTL though there are different versions of their conversation depending on Shepard's military background as well as his morality scale (The paragon/renagade thing are treated differently from the diplo skill as the two are merely cosmetic thereby giving players complete control on their conversations, investing highly on the diplomatic skill is still considered a priority), with the Collectors terrorizing human colonies (with TIM implying that there might be a fleet of theirs doing it) the Alliance is too busy dealing with the situation either with help from the Council or through negotiations for help from the other members of the galactic community, Cerberus is the only one capable of dealing with the crisis and destroying it without political consequences (The Codex refers to Cerberus' status as a disavowed organisation that had been created to protect humanity but was disavowed after de classified files revealed of their illegal experiments on biotic gifted children as well as the assassination of several officials, chief among them being the Ecunemical Patriarch ((OTL states they assassinated a pope so a pro cerberus one could be elected)), despite orders to terminate the organization, the Alliance is forced to tolerate them as their research had greatly benefitted humanity). Shepard is then forced into a 'deal with the devil' scenario as he relunctantly agrees on a mission to stop the Collectors.

Now since the Reich is still a bit religious as of the creation of the games, there's a level of mysticism present on all three though the first one only has bits of it as it generally focuses on galactic exploration as well as the aliens themselves, ME2 however makes this more apparent as the existence of the Reapers (Who keep their Lovecraftian theme) are regarded with suspicion, and often awe. Because 2 is mostly focusing on the lawless Terminus system, there will be a central theme involving morally grey choices and the needs of the many outway that of the few gig and as the game progresses, the players will be forced into morally grey choices and be placed into situations where long term consequences and rewards must be the priority.

Another theme present in the 2nd game is the Cycle Sovereign had mentioned in the previous game, the words of a certain Mexican conquistador are echoed by various characters with TIM being the first to qoute it, thus the death cult and the mysterious sender from 1 become more prevalent here.

Now the first half of the game proceeds the same way as in OTL, the introduction of the Gibraltar SR2, a bigger version of its first incarnation, a new galactic hub to go to as well as more sectors of the galaxy to explore. There's a brief codex entry on the Omega station as well as Aria T'Loak herself before you meet her, one of the things that make Omega truly different from the Citadel is how dirty the station looks, with various species, Council and non-council thrive thus giving the player a truly different look on how Omega is different from the Citadel with Aria even commenting on how everyone in the Terminus is free from the Council (and now humanity)'s misguided rule. (An analog to what the Mexicans think of the Reich). There's several side quests during this first part alongside the OTL recruitment missions, among these quests is revisiting the Gibraltar's crash site and a potential lead on the death cult from the previous game (This particular quest will only activate if the player checks his private terminal and the message's contents depending on whether or not they did the quests in the previous games.)

There's also a mission where you go back to the citadel and meet up with Anderson (Depending on the choices at the end of the previous game you could also meet up with the Citadel Council as well) and have a brief conversation on current events as well as the Alliance reluctantly assigning Shepard to Cerberus, as well as reasons on why an Anti Reaper task force has not yet been created (Should the Council survive, they cite their reasons being for the sake of continued peace) and doing so might cause panic and suspicion given that humanity was still dealing with the Collector Crisis.

After the player has finished the potential recruit missions, TIM then contacts Shepard on a potential attack on the colony of Horizon. Just like in OTL.

I'll do the remaining half of alternate ME2 but hopefully you all like this reinterpretation :D

Depending on what the player did in ME1, Lawson might also bring up the other alien civilizations being wary of humanity's new influence or leadership.
Maybe there could be a hidden second option depending on Shepard's morality scale in which he can reject Cerberus, making the next few missions much harder (but with some benefits I'm not sure about to provide an incentive to choose the option).

The Protheans and their leftover technology on Mars would also be more prominent, with some humans talking about the cyclical nature of history, the destiny of humanity, and the Prothean role in human development and space travel.
Shepard's dialogue might change if he didn't align with Cerberus previously..
