Chapter 16: Iwerddon
Chapter 16: Iwerddon
1190-1206
1190-1206
Conamail quickly forgets the Mongols. Not just because he doesn’t believe that there could be a horde stronger than his Kingdom somewhere in the East, but also because one his co-conspirators has come up with a plan how to kill Conamail’s wife, Queen Leonor. One abandoned inn will be converted into a trap. Once she is seated inside the building, the floor under her will explode!
And the plan works! Leonor dies with the explosion, just as planned, and nobody can trace the assassination back to Conamail. He’s happier than ever... or is it just the demon living inside him?
Before Conamail could arrange himself a new, better, marriage, he is informed that new traces of the legendary white stag have been found. Conamail quickly gathers a new hunting group and goes after the beast. Sadly even after weeks of searching, they still don’t find the animal. Luckily this time though, the solitude in the woods doesn’t cause harm to Conamail’s mind.
A priest unknown to Conamail meets him back in the castle of Dinefwr. He tells that he can expel the demon from Conamail. Firstly, probably under demonic possession, Conamail turns down the offer, but with the pressure of his court, he later lets the priest attempt an exorcism. And to everyone’s surprise, the priest succeeds! Even weeks after the exorcism took place, Conamail has not acted weird. The priest is praised in the Welsh court!
Conamail is so happy that he is no longer possessed. He doesn’t remember everything he has done under the devil’s influence, but he apologises to many people his earlier behaviour. Conamail was known to be a kind person before the demon showed up, and now once again he’s just that. The court is even more happy once news from France arrive. Meurig, the uncle of Conamail who killed his father, has passed away because of cancer.
Conamail wants a spouse badly, but unfortunately he doesn’t find anyone good enough to be married to the King of Brythoniaid. Thus, he decides to continue with his other dream, dream that he has not talked much about. Becoming the King of Ireland. He still is partly Irish as he was raised as one. In the summer of 1191, Conamail declares a war against the Earl Niallgus of Airgíala. Conamail has had a claim on the county for some years now.
As Conamail is gathering his armies for the first war of his reign, a letter arrives from Scotland. Conamail’s ally, the King Alan of Scotland and Jerusalem, asks Conamail’s help in the just begun civil war of Scotland. Conamail promises to come help after he has conquered Airgíala.
The first battle takes place in the plains of Ireland. It is an easy victory for Conamail, thanks to the massive number of the Welsh warriors. Next Conamail leads his men to lay siege to the enemy capital.
During the siege, a letter arrives from the Kingdom of France. The King Antoine of France proposes a betrothal between his eldest son and Conamail’s aunt, both aged fourteen. Conamail accepts, but doesn’t form an alliance with the French as he doesn’t want to be dragged into wars of the Continental Europe.
Little after the response to the French proposal is sent, Conamail receives another letter from the mainland of Europe. Lambert, the Holy Roman Emperor, asks the permission to marry his oldest son to Conamail’s second aunt. Conamail allows this marriage, but doesn’t sign an alliance with the German ruler neither.
After capturing the castle Cluain Eois of Airgíala and annihilating the enemy army, Conamail sends his demands to the Earl Niallgus. The pathetic Earl surrenders and hands over his former lands to Conamail. Conamail has won his first war!
Airgíala is more important province that most might think. With it under Conamail’s control, he rules over half of the Irish lands! Because of this great achievement, Conamail crowns himself the King of Irish people, the King of Iwerddon! Conamail is the first Dinefwr to rule two Kingdoms!
But the dual-King has no time to rest. He still has to help his ally in the north. Once Conamail’s warriors from Iberia meet with the main army in Iwerddon, Conamail leads them to the Scottish lands.
It doesn’t take long to find the Scottish rebels. Conamail’s army charges at them in the hills of Scotland! The battle is rather long, but with Conamail’s great tactics and vast number of warriors, the Welsh overwhelm the enemies. Over 2000 rebels die in the battle! It is another great victory for Conamail, even though he is wounded in the battle. Luckily the wound heals quickly as it wasn’t even a bad one. Everything seems to be going well!
The war continues with the Welsh army killing another thousand of rebel warriors and after that capturing one of the rebellious provinces. It doesn’t take long for the uprising to surrender. King Alan is most grateful to Conamail.
As Conamail finally gets back home, more news about the Mongols have arrived. They call their leader Genghis Khan, the greatest Khan of history. Under his rule, the Mongols have seized an enormous amount of land. At the moment, their Empire is one of the greatest in the world! Conamail finally admits that the Mongols are indeed great warriors and conquerors, but doesn’t worry about them that much. Their Empire is so far to the east that there are almost no maps in Brythoniaid of the lands they occupy.
Finally a spouse for Conamail is also found. Princess Konstanze, a 12-years-old daughter of the Holy Roman Emperor, is betrothed to him.
Many would think that Conamail will expand his Kingdom of Iwerddon by warfare, but that’s not the case. Conamail’s intimidating power makes all of the three independent Earls of Iwerddon to peacefully become vassals of him. There are now only three Irish provinces that are not under Conamail’s control: two of which belong to the Petty King of Mumu and one which belongs to the Scots. Because most of the Northern Ireland is under his control, Conamail creates the ducal title of Ulster, which he gives to one of the vassalised Earls.
In June 1198, the wedding between Conamail and Konstanze is held. Konstanze is a pretty young lady, who is not only shrewd but also brave! Some call her little shy and paranoid, but Conamail doesn’t care about that: she’ll be a great wife. Especially compared to the former one.
Things in Scotland are getting out of hand. The King Alan has given the Kingdom of Scotland to his little brother due to the demand of the Scottish nobility. Alan still holds the title of Kingdom of Jerusalem though, but the borders of these two Kingdoms are messy.
Even more interesting developments take place abroad in October 1200. Some North German cities have formed, with the blessing of the Holy Roman Emperor, the Hanseatic League. Its goal is to someday dominate all of the trade in Baltic and North Seas.
Two years after the formation of Hansa, Konstanze is pregnant. Conamail is going to have his first child at the age of 36! Before the child is born, Conamail starts a new hobby, games. That’s thanks to his new good friend, the Duke of Ulster. The child is born on 12th January 1203. It is a girl and she is given the name Newlyna.
The Duchess of Toulouse and the Duke of Leinster have been a married couple for years now. They are both Dinefwrs, each other’s second cousins, but that isn’t a problem, obviously. What is troublesome is the fact that they both have their eldest son as their heir. This means that it is possible that one day the duchy of Leinster ends up in the control of the Kingdom of France. Conamail doesn’t want this to happen and so he bribes the Council to make it illegal for a title, that’s de jure part of the Kingdom of Iwerddon, to pass to a person loyal to another liege than the King of Iwerddon.
With the Council bribed, Conamail decides to make a second alteration to the law. Conamail’s modification changes it so that the sovereign can revoke titles from his vassals without the approval of the Council.
White stag. Traces of it has been found once again. Conamail readies his hunting party and they go after the animal. Sadly, it is another useless trip. Conamail’s group doesn’t find any more signs of the magnificent animal.
Back home Conamail receives a letter from his good ally King Alan of Jerusalem. He is accusing the Welsh for pirating his realm’s shores. Little offended by this recrimination, Conamail responds with not so friendly letter. Strangely no apologies from Alan arrive. Later Conamail is informed that Alan gave up the ghost shortly after writing the letter. It haunts Conamail a little that he had not written a nice letter to a dying man, but perhaps he died before reading the unkind message. Conamail writes to Alan’s son Evander, the new King, his condolences and also an offer of alliance, which Evander accepts.
In June 1206, Konstanze informs the court that she is pregnant for the second time. It is a happy summer for all of the court. Sadly the commoners of the Kingdom do not share the delight of the gentry and nobility. A large outbreak of consumption has taken over all of the southern parts of the isle. Even couple of Welsh provinces in Brythoniaid and Iwerddon have come under the reign of illness. Luckily, with the most grand hospital in the whole known world, at least according to the Welsh, Dyfed has not been affected by this disease. The thousands of gold coins spent in the building might have been worth it.
To celebrate the well-being of his Kingdom... well, of his capital, Conamail organises a grand tournament to take place for the people of Dyfed! Let the best knights of the Kingdom fight until only the best of them is standing!
Extra Note:
- The Teutonic Order has been formed and the Swedish King gave them a province in the Estonian lands to rule over.
