I work on a project of topography of medieval Europe + N.Africa + the Near East
http://www.rome.webz.cz/index.htm

at the moment I have done some parts of Europe, but it all needs further work, if anyone has any interesting maps that could help me, it would be nice if you would send them to me.

I plan this map to be a ultimate source for the developers of medieval strategy games based on conquering territorries like Paradox games and Knights of Honor

right now I am collecting maps to make the map with all the regions throughout middle ages (generaly 800-1492) and when this will be finnished, I will make 3 - 5 maps corresponding the major eras of midle ages

Here is range of the map as I plan it now:

and the current stage of the map

I'm collecting maps to create one big map of historical territories of Europe and the Mediterranean through middle ages, so if I find some more not so well known and not linked often, I will post them here.

I believe my map when finnished could serve as source for medieval strategy games like Crusader kings or Knights of Honor.

Right now I have almost finnished Western (France, Spain, Low Lands) and Central Europe (HRE, Bohemia, Poland, Italy) and am working on Middle east (actually finnished: Byzantine emp, Armenia)

What about Eastern Europe? And what's the period?
I'll look for all the digital maps (scanned or not) I have and know and will post them here - for you (if they might help in some way) and for everybody. It would be interesting to have a thread filled with historical maps...

I have just finished 2 maps of historical regions in France and HRE

:cool: Very, very nice elvain. And very, very useful. Nice color-coding. :)

I think the area around the Netherlands could use some adjustments.

1.I would rename "West-Friesland" into just "Friesland". West-Friesland is what is on your map the north-eastern part of "Holland", it doesn't need a seperate county though.
2.Zeeland needs to be inbetween Flanders and Holland, adjoining the coast.
3.I would possibly rename "Deventer" into "Overijssel"

I'll look for a map of medieval Netherlands. :)

6 = Zeeland
12 = Friesland

Bah, he should be able to do them with only four colors :).
:rofl: hehe

but it would have no sense then.. except proving it is possible (what certainly is)

Together with what Alfihar already said about the low countries, some minor comments:
-Utrecht you may want to call "Sticht", which is the name of the region/county, Utrecht is the name of the bishopric which ruled it.
-Deventer I would call Oversticht. Deventer is just the main city during the Hanze days, while the area itself was semi-ruled (officially he was the lord, but due to the area in between his influence was very limited at times) by the bishop of Utrecht.
-Geldern and Zutphen (blue 5 and 7) dont sound right to me. 7 is definately Geldern, 5 looks like Limburg (both were counties)
