Disclaimer - This shall be a rather unconventional "After Action Report" because it's, erm, not actually one. To be frank, I've only ever completed one campaign of Stellaris, because I have so much trouble keeping energy up to put in the time to actually make it to the end.

But I LOVE the species/empire creator in Stellaris. Sometimes I will just hop in and update my ever growing list, because I just want to. So, for the 3 Year Anniversary (Congrats, by the way) I plan on sharing a number of my Empire creations with all of y'all. Feel free to add some of these to your galaxies if you want. ;) So without further ado:

Imari Citizen Regime
26A8A2304BE3594BC6DE01FE5AC3E3BE1ADD4374

It is said that the Imari are descended from one of the many varieties of birds that roam the skies over the vast oceans of Tezek. Indeed, ancient legends speak of how the gods once took pity on a bird that lost the ability to fly, giving him the ability to reason and build his own society, though you would be hard pressed to find a modern Imari that puts much stock in those old tales.

What IS well documented are the vast variety of creatures that lived under the waves, beasts of all shapes and sizes, in some cases dwarfing even the largest vessels the early Imari could build. However, soon even these great creatures would fall to hunting ships of increasing size and complexity. The Imari became so skilled, in fact, that a number of sea creatures would go extinct before the ever advancing society realized what they were doing and found alternate means of food. Even then, it became tradition for entire island town gatherings to go out hunting, even if the ship they used could fly, and the food they ate were synthetic meat replacement.

Speaking of island town gatherings, much of Imari society is built around a strong naval-based culture. From hunter-gatherer ships to merchant vessels the livelihood of entire islands would rest. Because of this, Imari are used to being crammed into a tight space together, with other people, traveling long distances at a time, often with strict rules as given by a Captain (because to break those rules often led to someone you've known forever getting hurt somehow).
That said, because there was often limited room in these vessels, it was unavoidable that an "us vs. them" mentality would form, ranging from friendly competition to outright warfare. As such, the nations that formed were militarized to some degree, which did eventually lead to a global war that led to one ruling over all the others, in this case being the Imari Citizen Regime, probably the most militarist of the lot, though a lot of their success was due to an emphasis on reasonism and technological progress.
However, unlike what we humans tend to attribute to militaristic societies, Imari aren't very dictatorial by nature. Much of this is due to a healthy respect for just how tiny they are in comparison to the world (and later, the galaxy). Sure, ships are run by a Captain, but (s)he is just one person that requires a crew to actually accomplish anything, and more than a few times even they would require the assistance of other ships. So, in many cases, Oligarchies were the most common form of governance. In the ICR's case, many of the islands that were part of the progenitor nations were heavily reliant on their ships, so it was only natural for their government to be run by the Captains of these ships. A few of the larger islands were less strict about this requirement, with a few notable ones even attempting democracy once, though they ultimately either fell apart or voluntarily switched back. And there was an Imari known as the Mad King, though he's more of a historical joke than an actual serious figure.

Even as the ICR gobbled up its neighbors, however, it soon became clear that Tezek was reaching a sustainability threshold. A number of solutions were thrown about, when a breakthrough was made. Generations ago the first flying machines were created, and over time grand zeppelin-like designs were created, in some cases completely replacing purely naval boats as a source of livelihood. Then someone was able to break through the sky. It was a major turning in Imari history. A turning point the ICR embraced whole heartedly. Stories of possibilities flooded literary, and moving picture, media as a great endeavor was undertaken, collimating in the ICR Strategos to promise putting the first Imari on another planet within their lifetime.

And the hyperlane drive was created...

Come back next time for actual Pirate Parrots.

Author's Note - The vast majority of these names are from the in-game random name generator, and the ones that aren't are based on real world things, so don't worry about me being offended anyone else using them, since it's entirely possible someone else got the name by chance. Also, you might see a little "preview" of future entries on the left, as I am too lazy to take them out. ;)

Actual Pirate Parrots
Cynn Cartel
51A6A5A05DD284506A31FFA9DA3962E1128A2DB3

Superficially the Cynn are like the Imari, in that they are both avian species from ocean worlds. Both are heavily militarized, with an oligarchic governance system. However, while the Imari are socially-adept sailors with a heavy honor streak, the Cynn are, to put it absolutely bluntly, greedy self-serving bas-jackies. Heck, you can't even be sure about Cynn history, due to any accounts of it being loaded with lies, half-truths, spin doctoring, propaganda, and straight up erasure, all combined to the point of almost complete parody.

What little that outsiders can piece together, the beginning of Cynn society was in direct competition with a proto-humanoid creature that shared what little landmass was on the world of Emariss. Considering that very few, if any, off worlders have even seen this creature, it can be safe to guess that things did not go well for them. It's entirely possible they were enslaved, hunted, and harassed to extinction. Some may even have been killed to have their skulls stuck on a pike to mark territory with, hence why the logo used for the Cynn Cartel.
Speaking of, no one even knows for sure what the Cynn Cartel's actual name is, with "Cartel" being the catch-all term for the largest governing body from the planet. For all anyone knows, it might not even be the same one from one year to the next, with each change in leadership actually being a complete shift from one bickering faction to another.

Quite frankly, it's a wonder that the Cynn have even survived this long, except for one notable trait of the species: they are really really good with money. Whether they stole it, made it, or rolled dice for it, you can always be sure a Cynn will walk away with some credits in their account. Because of this, they are masterfully impulsive gamblers, and many a warning has been about entering one of their, or allowing one into your, casinos. That is, if they haven't blasted you away and took all your stuff already.

Coming next: A pair of hordes with no need for backstory.

Realta Sionnach Mileata

"War has changed. It's mainly watching swarms of spaceships pewing each other, then looking at circles turn increasingly red on a static UI." - Big Boss Steele, Triech-Sionnach War

It is often surprising to newcomers, meeting Sionnach from Outer Heaven for the first time, just how aggressively battle hungry such a small fluffy creature can be. Indeed, despite lacking numbers when it comes to size measurements and population, citizens of the Realta Sionnach Mileata PMC live and breath warfare, their natural cunning and charisma sharpened to a lethal edge. Their entire planet's history is filled to the brim with conflict after conflict, each with varying intensity, though it's the last war that's the most important, as it is the one that birthed the RSM in the first place.
No one knows who the first Big Boss was, other than the fact that he was the greatest soldier of his generation, and he was sick and tired of all the bull%#!& the governments of the world were putting their own militaries through for their own self-serving purposes. What followed goes by many names: The Revengence War, the Big Shell Crack, even the Solid State Rebellion. Either way, in the end all conventional forms of government was eliminated, replaced with a new society[[816ERROR-Corrupted file;Rebooting...

In this new world, you would earn your power through combat, whether literally on the battlefield (or in the skies), or metaphorically in the boardroom. Though often these boardrooms would be moved so close to the battlefield they might as well be the same thing.

Confederation of Werheni
B96B263CC24E0BEEB65EF995701491E51D364998

When meeting the Sionnach of Werheni for the first time, it is quite easy to imagine how such a cute and fluffy creature could become such a textbook example of friendliness and community.[Shyeah right, "Textbook example", as long as they are the author] As they are comparatively weak creatures often outnumbered, they learned quickly in their earliest civilizations the value in working with other species in order to survive.[AKA they tricked wild animals into doing the brunt of the work for them, before moving on to full on enslaving them for the "Greater Good"] This practice became so commonplace that many early societies adopted a highly spiritual outlook on this relationship with nature.[Technically true, though this mainly took the form of "I'm in charge because the Gods say I am"] This spirituality would continue for the entirety of their colorful history, as cultures shifted and morphed.[Mainly because most of the churches adopted a "Hey, do as I say, and the Fertility Goddess will let you (*@&!^9# in the afterlife"] Eventually, being highly intelligent and well spoken people, the Sionnach eventually learned the benefits of an inclusive and democratic society, which spread like wildfire just before the Industrial Age.[No one trusted anyone else with absolute power, so they built a system where they at least had the illusion of being able to fight for it] The Confederation of Werheni itself was born from the merging of two of the largest of these nations,[After the convenient "Accidental Death" of key politicians] both of which had folded their worship of the gods into this new democratic way of thinking[The churches worked hard to prevent "Separation of Church and State"] which created the modern inclusive Theocratic Republic we know today.["Vote for me, and the Fertility Goddess will let you (*@&!^9# in the afterlife"]

[Look, they keep going on for a while, so let's just skip to the nitty-gritty: Do not believe their pretty, finely crafted lies. The "Confederation" is a Theocratic Oligarchy in all but name. People's votes? Don't matter if they go against what the church wants. All those open border agreements? A tasty lure for any naïve skilled laborers to come over for their workforce. Any non-Sionnach in government are a puppet propped up to keep up a positive appearance. Bonus points if they are xeno-hybrids, never mind the fact that possible Sionnach mates are practically throwing themselves at any immigrant with desirable genetic traits]

You notice all the Real Life companies with "Fox" in the name? It's kinda surprising, really. I mean look: Earth's radio waves have reached this planet of Aeria, and these fox-like creatures like the idea so much that they morphed their entire society into a human-based Megacorporation, with human designs and everything. Heck, they've even based their ethics around how megacorporations are portrayed in our media, so really we only have ourselves to blame for any problems they cause in the great void beyond.

Author's Note - This next bit isn't "in universe" because I haven't really taken the time to build a complex backstory or anything. The first one is because it's such a simple concept, and the second because I just can't seem to get it right.

So my notes here just has "Xeno-Compatibility" underlined three times, circled twice, with little hearts and a few numbers in the 60s on the sides. Seems kind of out of character for me, but hey, if it's there... oh, and I apparently drew some... interesting pictures afterwards.

Now this species I've had the most trouble trying to get right. The primary inspiration is UFO Greys, partially with XCOM Ethereals thrown in, with a possible backstory for one of my alt-Earth human empires being an invasion of these creatures. So you would think that Barbaric Despoilers would be perfect. But then having the descriptor turn into "Bandit Kingdom" run by a Warlord just doesn't seem right to me. So after some twisting and tweaking, and finally buying Megacorp, I think I've created a variant based around the Infiltrator Alien Invasion trope on a galactic scale. Just be sure to grab Nihilistic Acquisition and you'll be set.

Next time, turns out being short is an advantage in space.

"We are children of the mountains of Old Alvania. Our skin is hardened like the stone of our homes. Our hands covered in wealth provide by same. However, once upon a time, this wealth was horded by kings, and other such parasites believing birth made them better than their fellows, our skin worn from generations of abuse. For many, life was a toil as they were forced to provide for those unworthy of their labor. Until one day, when enough of our brothers and sisters had had enough. That day, they came together, and shouted in one voice, 'POWER BELONGS TO THOSE WHO'VE EARNED IT!' And together, they formed the greatest army ever seen in history. Marching forth, they crushed the Undeserving under an avalanche of justice!
"Today, we enjoy the fruits of their victory. Today, any of you, through strength of arms and your own merit, can earn your place at the top. Whether a miner or a soldier, your voice can be heard through your own power. So speak loudly, my brothers and sisters, and carry an even bigger stick! This shall take you far!"

Indeed, we are children of the mountains, but be were meant to grow up eventually. There is so much more wealth to be had BEYOND the superficial glitter of ore. It is what the ore is capable of achieving, once you know how to mold it, how to direct it. While revolutionaries chased the phantom of freedom, we became masters of our own environment, building a grand machine to belittle anything mere soldiers could imagine: a society of science and progress. So let the warriors, deaf from words of surety, have their planet. We shall turn this one into perfection!" - Director-General [Redacted]

Varelviv Despoilers
04E951122E2DF412DE4B0A13B7DD565D4151902D

Sometimes the smallest things leave the biggest impact. When the early mammalian creature on Hazaria first caught the fungal infection, its primitive mind could only acknowledge that it was feeling a little ill. It would try the simple techniques it knew to get better. However, no matter what it did, it never could. Then the infection reached its brain, and it no longer thought for itself ever again. What replaced in then turned to the other mammalians that hadn't already fled to the trees. Soon, what followed would chase even those. The Varelviv was born. For a fungal parasite, living meant taking, and the one who took the most got to live the most. Anyone else was to be used for the parasite's benefit.

Then a spaceship crashed on their world. The survivors were quickly overwhelmed, their knowledge ripped from their minds before dying from exposure. Centuries later, the galaxy would burn, as the parasite did what only the parasite knew to do: live.

That was a bit of a short one, wasn't it? Well hang onto your butts, something big is just around the corner. But first, Paradox has added a flag and an advisor with their DLCs. It'd be a shame if I didn't use it.

Right, so I've been putting of the next entry because I knew this was going to overtake everything else I created, so I'm going to make you scroll down through them first. :p
So I like three things: military fiction, science fiction, and Americana. Naturally, I love anything that combines those three in some way, from Tom Clancy techno-thrillers to Halo, from Call of Duty to Titanfall.

I also wanted to make a parody society of this:
Wow, it's been that many years now. o_O And this:

So can we at least agree to have a good laugh, and have some fun pew pewing spaceships?
Alright, let's go to space!

United States of New/Neo America

Heads or tails?
I'm sorry?
Heads? Or Tails? It's all a matter of perspective. From this angle:
56B8F5513F8BF80025A0C0F496B93167367DDBE2

This happened. From that angle:
A131BC32E78A2AE3898D989BD5033C654212C5B2

That happened. So many variables, so many possibilities. So we ask again: Heads or Tails?

Screw this, I'm going to space
It was only natural that the United States participated in the UN Ulysses project. In fact, many in the American leadership thought it was the perfect opportunity to regain a bit of lost prestige in the global community, so trillions of dollars were poured into a colony ship. All sorts of media was made, touting how this was going to be the next step to greatness for the nation. The best and brightest were chosen for this endeavor, and cameras watched with rapt attention as the ship made it's way through the wormhole.
Oh, if they only knew. When the wormhole closed, and contact was lost, the colonists soon found themselves thrust into a scenario they only thought they were prepared for.

Oh what a world, what a world
So what did they find? A new sun, one without a name. There had been some ideas bandied about, with hopes to decide with a massive internet vote with those still at home. Finding themselves isolated, however, it was clear they would need to decide for themselves. And there was only one real option for them, in their desperation: Columbia, the goddess of democracy, there to light their way in the darkness. And their new home...
Heads or Tails?

Neo world, alt world problems
Life was rough on Neo America. The atmosphere had shifted between the time of discovery and the colonists actual arrival, making adapting much more difficult than expected. The provincial government did it's best to keep everything together, but it wasn't long before cracks started to form. Old hatchets, thought buried back on Earth, were dug back up lightyears away. Eventually...
DofH72f.jpg

The United States was split in four: Isolationists (Fanatic Egalitarian, Peaceful), Syndicalists (Fanatic Egalitarian, Materials, Shared Burden), and Fundamentalists (Fanatic Egalitarian, Xenophobe) broke away and tried to conquer the other three, including the emergency military junta led by a legendary General.
The junta won. And the General was not happy. For years he served his country faithfully, only to watch all the "Fanatic Egalitarians" try to rip the whole thing to shreds over petty bickering. If all this was going to hold together, in the spirit of all those that sent them here to this new world, some discipline was going to be needed. He then proceeded to make some adjustments to the system.

IT'S A BUGHUNT, MAN, A BUGHUNT
latest

The planet of New America was swarming with violent xeno-fauna that the probe had somehow missed, all of it not at all happy with their new neighbors. The colonists soon found themselves in a daily fight for survival.
An artistic recreation of events:
usariadna.jpg

A shift happened. It was minor at first, but became more and more apparent as time wore on, and the bodies of dead aliens piled ever higher. After a while this new state just became used to being on a war footing. Everyone had a common enemy to direct their ire at, one that let them cool down and look at their differences between each other in a new light. As monsters tried to rip down the door, petty squabbles became more obviously petty. In one of history's greatest ironies, as the military complex became more a part of everyday life, having something to direct it towards brought the bonds of humanity closer together.
So even as the hordes were beaten back to the point that humanity became the dominant species once more, when given the option to go back to the old way of governance, the Militarized Republic was maintained by a large margin.

Next time, what happens when you drink the serum.

Wow, I'm amazed at the amount of work you put into all these. I love all the variations in your Irish Space Foxes and Inexpensive Star Elves, all though your blue skinned space babes might be the most amusing! :D

A/N - Y'all thought I put effort into my empire creations? Weeheeeheell, hang on to yer love handles, 'cause I've got something for a minor gameplay element!

Incoming Freedom

The concept of a Joint Strike Force dates back to Old Earth during the pre-colonization years, when fears of WWIII were a real possibility. An evolution of the versatility of the United States Marine Corp, the JSF would draw the best recruits from all branches of the military, and give them the absolute best equipment that taxpayer dollars could afford.
Neo - Caught in a desperate civil war, the General looked to the concept as a counter to the various fledgling militias that made up the majority of their opponents. Backed by conventional forces, the federal government was ultimately able to gain victory.
New - With the constant pressure of alien threat, the Hexagon deemed it necessary to create a rapid reaction force to deal with hotspots as they occurred. The JSF was ultimately what they decided on, both as a practical solution, and as a morale boosting technique.

When the USNA made it to space, however, the idea was ultimately shelved as the military went back to a more conventional form in its Assault and Defense Armies.

Until the Gene Seed was purified...

A semi-organic nano-machine substance, Meld allowed scientists to unlock the full genetic potential of a host body, with the most effective use being the installation of a Unilateral Plasmid Sack (UPS, or "Ups" as it's called). Using the Ups as a base, gene-engineers then use extensive bio augmentation to create the Gene Warrior, the ultimate soldier template.

But a soldier is more than just their genetic makeup. It is the training, it is the equipment. And an army is more than just the skill of individual soldiers.

It was the perfect time to revive the JSF.

the Gene-Enhanced Strike Force was created. Called the Gamma Strike Force, because Golf Strike Force sounds a little silly, or GSF in the common vernacular, recruitment soon got underway after the horribly botched "Skyfall Attack" decimated the numbers of the standard assault armies. Soon the Future Force Warriors of the GSF were anointed in a trail by fire.

It was a resounding success. Caught off guard, the fanatical enemies of liberty could not stand before America's newly attained superior firepower. A new breed of heroes had arrived.

The Gene Warriors became instant celebrities back home, with acres of movies, VRseries, ebooks, and video games created about them. Ultimate Combat Arena had to open a new league to accommodate this new weight class, which soon eclipsed all the previous ones.

And so, the United States Gene-enhanced Strike Forces were a staple of the US military, becoming the primary option for planetary assaults the galaxy over. Truly, the postmodern US soldier is the finest warrior the galaxy will ever see.

Adding a bit of order to the chaos

Much like the Marine Corp, every GSF soldier is a rifleman, at which point they work their way up and outward. Over the course of their career, a veteran could feasibly take on every role on this list, and is more than capable of swapping to any one that is needed at the time. A number of the more notable roles:

Rifleman - While many would call this role as the "basic" one, only a fool would believe it to be a "lowly" position. A GSF soldier is the best at what they do, and that includes "basic" rifle work. Indeed, a GSF Rifleman know the rifle to be more than just a "useless" weapon to feebly plink away at the monsters, but a perfect blend of versatility, power, range, and mobility for a multitude of combat scenarios. And, in enough numbers, backed by a select smattering of specialized weaponry and equipment, a Rifleman squad can take out all but the most dangerous of targets, and even then it's possible to overcome with the right aim. It also helps that the standard GSF rifle can be called a "cannon", if you want to be generous to cannons.

Pathfinders - Recon Snipers has long been a US military tradition, and the GSF Pathfinder is the pinnacle of that tradition. Cloaking tech, sound dampeners, target designators, and a bolt-action rifle in a caliber size often labeled "over" are all tools of these deadly killers' trade.

Breacher - Often interstellar warfare requires close encounters, and the Breacher is more than well equipped for a visit. CQB training is standard for all GSF soldiers, but the Breacher takes it to the next level. While the precise style often varies from one Strike Force to the next, from "submachine dancing" to "magnum ballet" to "4 gauge brawling", the end goal is often the same. And if that fails, there's a wide variety of blades, hammers, and EXO-fists to fall back on, if they don't lead with that instead.

Gunner - A simple name, for a simple concept: use big guns to blast your enemy. The complexity comes from handling the guns themselves. Due to their augments, GSF soldiers are rather large, with Militiamerican troops being politely called "F#%@ing Huge", so naturally their "big gun" is capable of blowing up entire platoons of normal soldiers rather easy. And with size comes mechanical complexity. The amount of hand dexterity that goes into getting these guns to work, even with advancements in mechanical assists, could impress even the best pistol twirlers.

Pilot - Very much a catch-all term, of which all treadheads, wingnuts, and mechadiers fall under. GSF vehicles, of course, are in a class of their own in comparison to other branches of the military. The Washington Master Battletank (not to be confused with the Navy's Washington-class Battlecruiser), for instance, can chew up any other known tank in existence as light delectable snacks, and that's after going through everything else first. "Tank beats everything" indeed. But the GSF Pilot is versatile, able to jump from one vehicle to the next without slowing down, though it is generally frowned upon to just leave an empty combat machine unattended. And even if a Pilot is forced to bail, it's still a GSF soldier, who can use their bare hands to get out of trouble if needed.

Elite variants - Probably the one thing that sets the various Strike Forces apart is how they approach "Elite" variations of the above roles. As the pride of the US military, the GSF has top pick of all the latest gear from DARPA. Jump packs, variations of power armor, grappling hooks, sensor suites, all the various shiny gadgets are available, and each Strike Force, for whatever reason, applies them differently.

Tune in next time for... erm, I dunno. Something? Y'all want me to keep going?
