Hello and welcome to The Last Ghazi, my fourth go at moderating a game on these forums. This time we shall be set in early modern India, just after Mughals under Akbar have prevailed at the Battle of Panipat, securing their reconquests in Northern India. The game model will be the same as in my previous historical character games; the focus is on characters and narratives rather than on countries and stats.

Joining the game

Joining is simple; just post a ‘character sheet’. The preference is, as usual, on historical characters which are also listed below. However this time I will also allow ahistorical, or player-created characters, but those must be within reason. Don’t expect to be allowed to begin the game as a ruler if you make one. The game’s region, at least for now, is also limited to the attached maps and the realms marked on it, so don’t even bother to ask about playing a Deccani or Safavid noble.

Name:
Date of Birth/Age: (Ask me if in doubt)
Culture/Religion: (Quite obvious, I hope)
Family: (Relatives, such as your wives, children, siblings, cousins etc.)
Biography: (Short background story for your character, and a summary of his life and deeds as the game progresses)
Location: (Where your character currently resides, again ask me if you aren’t sure)

Just like in my previous games, family additions happen via IC: one child per consort every two years is the limit, though there may be special cases in which I'll intervene.

Rules, Orders and Updates

This time the game is considerably ‘lighter’ than my usual ones, to reduce my burden and to allow me to continue moderating it even when my life gets busier times. Thus, this post won’t be too long either. If you have already played a game of mine, just go make your character and maybe read this later. If not, then this might actually be worthy of reading. Stats, simply speaking, are the financial and military resources of each state. There will not be stats for individual characters, as the main driving force is their IC actions, intrigues and narratives. Do not worry, each character’s influences, wealth and such will be represented, just not with numbers. The realm stats are there just to give a general idea about the status of each state, as well as to make it easier to keep track of militaries, which are the main focus of the system.

Military stats should be rather simple. There are three army types in the game: Persianate (Influenced by Steppe and Persian military technology), Muslim Indian (armies of the traditional Musilm states of Hindustan) and Rajput (armies of the Hindu Rajput warrior states). Each of them has its own advantages, and slightly different unit costs.

The realm stats can be changed with orders. Each sovereign leader (in some cases a regent) has a state-wide realm order to be used for large-scale realm-wide actions. The generals, governors and officials of each state also have an administrative order to handle their official position. Then, each and every character will also have one personal order, to be used on furthering their own position, managing their own influence, intrigues and wealth. So in short. Rules get 2+1 orders, officials of any sort 1+1 and all the others 1. Remember, a multitude of personal actions (which don't affect others or your stats) can also be done via IC, contact me to be sure.

War is a different thing, and is dealt with ‘war plans’. War plans are used for every military action, for recruitment and the bloodshed itself. Large construction programs, such as a huge new fort are normal actions though, while some quick field fortifications belong to the war plans. Every character in command of a military force may use these in a time of war, and the rulers and general commanders are to allocate command to various player and NPC lieutenants and officers. Wars will mostly be dealt with in minis, so war plans usually have their own due dates. The length and actions of a war plan are technically unlimited, but keep it within reason. Usually the more detailed is the better, but don’t expect me to read a novel about 16th century arrow designs. And on the other hand, don’t overextend your troops.

Orders will be sent to me via PM, like this:

To: XVG
Subject: [The Last Ghazi] – Amir Ebin Khan of Maymaystan
Message text:
Realm Order:
Administrative Order:
Personal Order:
War Plan:

Using the same message chain/conversation for each turn's orders, mini orders and quick questions is the best for sake of clarity.

IRC
As usual, there is an OOC IRC Channel. Not obligatory, but very useful, and in fact recommended.
Network: http://www.coldfront.net/
Channel name: #TA
Instructions:

1) Go to ColdFront using the link above.
2) Choose the Flash or Java Client
3) Create a screen name
4) The client will auto-add you to #coldfront. Leave this channel.
5) In the command box type "/join #TA"

You should then be logged in and ready to go.

After defeating the Hindu army of Hemu by the skin of his teeth at the second battle of Panipat the 14-year old emperor ruled over a powerful realm in Northern India and Afghanistan. His realm, however, is in a precarious position against the Suri Empire he has effectively unseated, and his position inside his realm is precarious as well.

Name: Miyan Bayezid Baz Bahadur Khan (Baz Bahadur)

Date of Birth/Age: 1530. In his twenties.

Culture/Religion: Muslim/Indian

Family: Shuja'at Khan (Father, deceased), Rani Roopmati (Wife)

Biography: Son of Shuja'at Khan, Baz Bahadur has recently come to the throne of Malwa and declared his independence of the Mughal Empire. Not much is known of him so far, besides the legendary love between him and Roopmati. He is known for the general mismanagement of his Sultanate in favour of grand gestures to his one true love, and the glory of his father. Malwa is most definitely not ready for war, what with the few soldiers remaining spent on useless parading about and the economy aimed towards luxury for the royal couple, but the region is rich and might be turned to more... proper aims, should the young Sultan receive a proper wake up call.

Location: Mandu, Malwa.

Oh man... as promised: I am so applying for this. :)

Ghiyasuddin was renowed in life for his remarkable similarity to his predecessor Sher Shah Suri

Name: Shah-i-Bengala Ghiyasuddin Bahadur Shah II (born Khizr Khan Sur)
Date of Birth (Age): 1515 (42)
Culture/Religion: Pashtun / Sunni Islam
Family: Hameeda Begum (Wife, b. 1537), Shamsuddin Muhammad Shah (Father, d. 1555, born Muhammad Khan Sur), Mirza Jalal Khan Sur (Brother, b. 1519), Mirza Khizr Khan Sur (Nephew, b. 1538)

---

Biography: A scion of the Sur tribe, Khizr Khan fought alongside his brethren to overthrow Mughal control of Hindustan and assert their own dominance over the region. When his father, Muhammad Khan, was appointed as governor of Bengal in 1545 by Sher Shah, Khizr Khan followed him and the two governed over the region well. They also ensured to establish their own support, however, and thus when Islam Shah died in 1555 Muhammad Khan took the name Shamsuddin Muhammad, and declared himself Shah-i-Bengala.

Shamsuddin Muhammad briefly subdued Arakan before turning West, where he was defeated in battle by the amir Hemu who served Muhammad Adil Shah Suri, the successor of Islam Shah. Adil Shah hastily established his authority in Bengal and appointed Shahbaz Khan as his governor, however Khizr Khan was able to rally the soldiery of Bengal that had dispersed following his father's defeat, and cast Shahbaz from the region.

Establishing himself in Jannatabad, Khizr Khan took the name Ghiyasuddin Bahadur Shah II upon assuming the throne of Bengal, and for now rules the land as Shah-i-Bengala.

Following the advance of the Moghul armies against the Suri's, Adil Shah sought the aid of Bahadur Shah. At first Bahadur lent his relation his support, though this was at best lukewarm. Following inactivity by Adil and continual reverses by the Suri armies to the West, Bahadur openly criticised his peer. This came to a head following the Night of Blood, where Adil Shah bled both Moghul and Suri troops, as the mortally wounded Adil was executed by Bahadur.

Consequently, Bahadur claimed authority of all Suri armies, and sought peace with the Moghuls in Delhi. This, however, was entirely rejected by the despot 'Akbar', who sought to bring tyranny and death across Hindustan. In the war with the Moghuls, Bahadur and his family were mercilessly slain. Many of his fellow pashtuns mourned at the death of such an honourable leader, and dreamt of a future where the Moghuls no longer existed.

Ubaydah Baba al-Ha'iy

Date of Birth/Age: 1523 (33)

Culture/Religion: Arab | Sufi Islam, Ha'iyya Order

Family: Nephew - Haroun Abd al-Jalil (b. 1538)

Biography: Hailing from Medine, Ubydah pursued religious instruction across the Ottoman Empire, an adherent to Sufism and desirous of the mystic secrets that he believed could be learned. It is this that brought him into the folds of the Bektashi Order in the Balkans at a young age. In lodge within the sprawing capital of Constantinople, Ubaydah studied until his late 20's, intermittently meeting with mystics from Albania, learning many truths from the exotic peoples that would not have been possible in the lands of Arabia.

Upon his return home, Ubaydah claimed himself Ubaydah Baba, himself now a learned teacher of those who sought guidance. Unsuccessfully Ubaydah Baba would preach in Medina, only attracting minimal attention and one discipline, his young nephew Haroun who would accompany him in his travels. During this time, Ubaydah would diverge into his own teachings, and soon enough claimed that he had divined knowledge from Allah that none knew, creating a level of mystery behind his already arcane teachings. This would culminate in Ubaydah Baba declaring himself the Mahdi in private to his nephew-discipline, and resulted in his flight from Arabia to the far-east, where he believed his status could be more easily proven, away from the authorities of Mecca.

With his nephew in tow, Ubaydah Baba sought his own pilgrimage to the lands of the Mughals, seeing it as a land rife with violence, but also a land rife with exotic truths and a desire to learn them, an interesting dualism between mortal suffering and divine knowledge. Recently settling in Kabul, Ubaydah Baba has began again to preach his faith, and in the process, has formed what has become known as the Ha'iyya Order, his own sect of Sufi thought, the name taken from Ubayda's own claims to be one with Allah and all life in the universe. How his pilgrimage will develop is only known by Allah, praise be unto Him.

Bairam Khan, Regent of the Mughal Empire

Date of Birth: 1501
Culture/Religion: Turkmen (Qizilbashi) Shia
Family: First Wife: Daughter of Jamal Khan of Mewat (b. 1530s) Second Wife: Salima Sultan Begum (b. 1539) Son: Abdul Rahim (b. 17 December 1556)

The Regent was born in Afghanistan, a member of the Baharlu clan of the Turkmen Kara Koyunlu tribe, and both his father and grandfather had served under Babur. By the age of 16, he too had entered into Babur's service, and partook in the conquests of India, and he rose to greater prominence under Babur's son, Humayan, eventually rising to the position of muhrdar, or keeper of the seals. He similarly took part in the campaigns in Benares, Bengal, and Gujarat. Afterwards, he accompanied Humayun during his exile in Persia and helped conquer Kandahar before serving as its governor for nine years.

He played a leading role as a commander in Humayun's reconquest of Hindustan, and following the Sultan's death, he was appointed Regent over the young monarch Akbar and led the Mughals to victory over the Hemachandra Vikramaditya at the Second Battle of Panipat.

When he found him, he was so moved by the Sikh faith, that he converted to the faith, forsaking his previous Hindu beliefs. Baz Bahadur
To the most gracious and auspicious regent of Garha-Mandla Rani Durgavati Maravi. (@Rolman99 )

I am most certain that the grave tidings of the recent battles have already reached your royal ears, and of the defeat suffered against the Mughal Empire. The situation is no doubt grave, but given the strength of our empires we would do well to join forces for mutual defense against the Mughal threat.

As such, I Baz Bahadur of Malwa would extend the offer of a defensive pact to the great Garha-Mandla to secure both our futures and allow us to find the best route in this treacherous maze we find ourselves in.
