I’ve been looking forward to a game that did this for a long time.

What I requested for is finally here. Thank you Colossal Order and Paradox Interactive for this!

EDIT: For the second time, thank you @metacritical for the disagree. :)

Can we get more details on the academic projects?
the dates of the live stream announcements for each aspect of the expansion are listed above

Aaaand time to start checking the forums for news literally every 38 seconds and being disappointed almost every time... all aboard the hype train.

Since I had watched the trailer for this upcoming dlc. I sense it will be heavily influence by United States higher education format. Will there be room to allow a middle tier? Will it be an unfortunate pipe dream?

Noooo! This releases as I land in China for a 3 week business trip!!! Oh well, guess that means the bugs will be worked out by the time I get home...

What I am most excited about is new, large buildings that will change the look of the city. I LOVED Industries because the large warehouse, factory buildings gave cities great focal points.

I'd love to have something like Industries, but for retail (larger malls, shopping areas). Especially something that would allow for parking areas, pedestrian walkways (that you could attach retail to). Basically something like Parklife, but with retail and parking instead of parks.

I've got 32GB of RAM, so bring it on!!!

How american, it's called Campus but half the vid is showing sports events.

So will the children continue to go to school in the middle of the night, and the traffic is still going to be unrealistic, or will they finally fix the bad simulation of schools, high schools and universities when they are being light up at 2 AM?

I really wish they take the Real Time mod and integrate it in their game, since they failed hard to do so in Nightlife, it's just a visual night, everything is fake

Lol, I usually just plop down the university building and then forget about it...
It seems like CO have changed over to a system of smaller DLCs that focus on a particular aspect or place in a city - Concerts, Parks, now Universities. While one doesn't really add that much, I appreciate that the prices of DLC's are quite low compared to other games using the Paradox DLC model, and all together they really start to make the game a lot more alive.

Will there be other sports than american football ? I love the concept, but it seems to be a little too US for me. Not all countries have that type of "campus" with dormitories and giant stadiums. I hope it will be possible to do something cool and efficient without those ones.

2 things
  • I also am not interested in an expansion that replicates the American education system, which is all i've seen in the trailer with American University buildings, sports and even graduation ceremonies. Interesting to see what has driven this decision seeing as the game itself is mostly european in style
  • Again, announcing an expansion 11 days before release; I'm not sure why someone thinks its a good idea. No one else in PDX interactive publishing does it, I actually can't think of any other companies that do it. I assume at this stage of development, 11 days before release that you are just polishing and QAing, so you give the community zero time for suggestions, feedback or discussion
On the second point there were many posts about this same exact topic the last expansion release. Its to be honest completely baffling to me that you choose not to involve your very large and passionate community and not enlist their help in giving you their money. Here's my feedback, 11 days before release: usually i insta-buy these expansions but I see nothing in this expansion that interests me and to be honest i was not that impressed with the last Industries expansion; in my cities i use zero of the new buildings/ mechanics - mainly because they don't work properly (warehouse/ factory supply) or are not useful (tolls, cargo airports)

@lrbaumard - If you think they didn't do some form of research or focus testing, you are wrong. But let's expand your view: the expansion model paradox games use is, in some ways, riskier than putting out sequel. The point of an expansion is it's quicker and cheaper than starting over again, both in terms of development and audience. That means they have sell it to the audience they already have, someone who owns the game already. The more DLC a game has, the less attractive it will be to new players. This is why EA creates bundles for their Sims content: they try to put together an enticing entry point that takes that edge off.

So sure, perhaps you think this doesn't cater to you and maybe you are right, but it caters to other players. The success of industries and park life has apparently shown this is a popular format and given the developers a reason to keep using it. In the end there is will reach a point where the DLC is no longer profitable enough to justify support, and it's around that time we'll see an announcement for Cities 2.

I'm gonna assume it's as moddable as everything else, which then means it comes down to the mechanics of things. Those haven't been shown or explained yet, so we can't really say much about how it works. But if we get different buildings specialised in certain areas of education, which interact together in a campus area, then I'd pretty much be able to replicate a Danish university. If there's dorms, I'd probably use them as student flats. Sure it isn't exactly the same but it's close enough for me. The sports buildings will be the least interesting for me trying to replicate what I know, but I'm really not bothered. I really like the Match Day stadium having events and I think it's great to have more of that (assuming these will work similar to the Match Day stadium ofc). It isn't something that interests me a lot, but I've seen many requests for more sports and am happy to see other players get something they've wanted for a while.

Anyways, once we see how the mechanics of the campuses will work, we can start to have a better idea of how it applies to all universities and what we can customize with mods and custom assets. There's definitely the classical red brick and copper roofs buildings that feel very American, but there's also some that look more like generic concrete blocks - and we haven't had a good look at all the new assets yet. And no matter what I'm sure we'll see asset creators make their own campus buildings even if CO covered most styles. :p
