CHAPTER 5 - CONSOLIDATION
Uuen wanted more. He had established a decent Kingdom on the Isles but still the power brokers of Lombardy, France and the Byzantines laughed at him. He wanted more. He started by naming himself King of England, becoming Uuen Thrice-Crowned.
He used his new title to press his claim upon all the Land that should be his by rights. Some, like Middlesex and Norfolk joined his realm peacefully while others, such as Hwicce, had to be convinced via an army.
Uuen continued to broker marriages, allowing him to gain new friends from across the sea.
He gave out titles to his vassals to ensure their continued loyalty.
Next, he made a massive diplomatic move by managing to secure, through much hard work, a non-aggression pact with some Bishop in Russia.
The pathetic wimp on the Scottish throne attempted to re-open diplomacy with the Welsh. Uuen had none of it.
Uuen had his second son, who he named after his father, Irb, the man Uuen had always aspired to be like.
While Uuen's first child with his cousin's daughter resulted in a genius, the second child was not so bright.
The pathetic excuse for a Pope called off his quest to claim the Holy Land.
Uuen created entire new Duchys, all in the name of ensuring internal peace.
Uuen enacted a controversial new law, forbidding the exit of vassal titles from his Kingdoms.
Uuen had another illegitimate child. The child was blessed with the same mental affliction as his brother.
Uuen continued to work on securing internal alliances, becoming friends with the Duke of Mercia.
Uuen's heir came of age and was promptly married off to a lesbian genius.
The vassals were becoming restless with the constant wars. Uuen had to keep them in check.
Uuen named his third son after himself. He saw the best of himself reflected in that boy and resolved to become a kinder person.
Things worsened for Podric...
Uuen realised that he was becoming old. He was becoming withered by old age and with every year that passed the laughter from the European Kings grew louder. Uuen began a Grand Campaign - a never ending war with the Scottish that that would end with the death of Scotland, or the death of Uuen himself.
He started by assassinating the Scottish King.
Guess who became the new King? That's right, it's the boy Uuen had conquered Moray for. Uuen did not let his fond memories of the boy detract from his quest to get some respect.
Some time earlier Uuen had ordered a set of glorious crown jewels, enough to made even the Byzantines jealous. He couldn't even have that.
One of Uuen's most fruitful alliances broke down as a 28 year old Khagan died from an infection after too much horse riding.
Uuen's second son, Irb, became nothing like the Welsh King. He was a shy and stubborn boy, often sulking away quietly. He had gained a passable knowledge of warfare but nothing compared to the incomparable wisdom picked up by the first Irb.
Uuen's first illegitimate son, Ninian, became an adult. He had gained little to no knowledge in anything, but that was to be expected from a drooling boy with 6 fingers on his left hand. Uuen decided to balance things out and therefore betrothed him to another inbred child.
Uuen took his anger at the Scottish out on a lowborn Mayor captured in battle.
Uuen Thrice-Crowned decided to become more progressive. By that I mean he allowed women to orchestrate assassinations for him.
Uuen paid extra money to get builders from his home culture. He thought about rolling it out across the realm but stopped when his wife caught him referring to himself as "Donald".
Uuen's son Irb finally decided to do something with his life rather than sitting around the Castle begging for titles. Uuen let him go.
The King continued to make sure that his vassals would not conspire against him.
After so many wars with Scotland, so many broken truces, Uuen had changed his family name from the hallmark of prestige, the ultimate underdog story, to a dynasty spat on and hated by everyone else, a name that would echo throughout the ages (just not in the way Uuen had hoped for). Ironically, Uuen had broken all these truces, started all these wars for respect which he already had. He had been loved and now, in his quest for prestige, he had lost it all. He was still known as "the Noble" but it had become a cruel jape, an ironic twist on the word.
Nonetheless, Uuen blissfully made allegiances with the very Kings who hated him.
Uuen Thrice-Crowned had killed his dynasty's prestige. But in the end, he had the respect he had craved. Through fear. Uuen walked into his throne room and was given his fourth crown. The one that mattered. The realm of Britannia was his. At the age of 65, a new Emperor rises. Emperor Uuen "the Noble".
LONG LIVE THE EMPEROR!
