All Miracles Last Three Days
A story of Kings, Regents and War.

Hungary, December 29th, 1935 - Horthy's personal study:

Former admiral and current regent of the Kingdom of Hungary, Miklós Horthy, sighed and tapped his fingers on the oak desk in-front of him. The Kingdom had barely survived after the Great War, it had fought tooth and nail for the Austro-Hungarian Empire and had lost it all, they had dealt with "red" and "white" terrors and now, mere days from 1936, the Kingdom was... Stable, for now. The world had changed since the old admiral was in his prime. Currently Italy was invading Ethiopia and Germany's Hitler had brought it back to some stability too. Both Mussolini and Hitler seemed like strong men, maybe strong allies.. After all, Hungary just like Germany was forced to accept unfair treaties. Versailles for Germany and Trianon for Hungary.

The regent stood from his chair and went to his window, looking out upon Budapest and in that moment he decided. No more. Hungary would rise again, not under some Hapsburg nor the tyranny of the people or Diet. No. He would choose a leader for Hungary, it could not be himself as he had only barely managed to bring Hungary to stability and was more a man of war. He would ask the Hungarian Diet which King they would view as best. He smiled to himself and then shook his head. 'God have mercy on the man they pick.' He thought to himself.

Hungary, January 1st, 1936 - Hungarian parliament building.

Horthy stood upon a podium in the main MP room and began speaking to the gathered members of parliament. "My fellow Hungarians, fellow believers in Hungary! I bring news to you all today... I bring fourth the topic of a King, after all... We are the Kingdom of Hungary and I am merely a regent, as we all know. We can not allow a Hapsburg back on the throne as Romania and our other neighbors would react violently and Hungary is not yet ready for war. Thus I ask you to vote for two options. I have spoken to the two men and they have both expressed an interest in taking over the throne. Thus I will allow this parliament to vote for which man they think is best.
First, Friedrich Franz, Hereditary Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin, he is a man of military experience and discipline, a Hauptsturmführer of the German SS. The second option is Prince Wilhelm, Duke of Södermanland, a photographer and book writer of Sweden, this would unite us closely with the Swedish nation and their rich resources. Now I shall allow you to vote." And with that, Horthy left the room and went to his office area in the Parliament building while the various politicians and MP's began to squabble with each other, he couldn't stand them. Thus he thought it better to be alone during their voting period, he gave them a few months all while he had to balance the budget of the nation and do real work, while they squabbled. It kept him busy and he didn't want the future King to rule over a poor nation.

Hi, guys! This is my first ever AAR and I decided to do a Hungary run. I do hope you enjoy reading it and I will try to improve with every post, I am not a Hungarian but my girlfriend is, so I mostly associate her and historical texts for various matters in this AAR. If you find something that's odd or wrong just point it out, thank you! Mods used for this are as follows: Player-led peace conferences and no XP for division design. These mods are on the Steam workshop.

Chapter 1: Realpolitik
eEmYADxs.jpg

Hungary - Parliamentary Building, 3rd of January - 6:00 am.

"You did what!?" Gyula Gömbös shouted at his friend, the Prime Minister leaning forwards, hands on Horthy's oak desk. "You know the Little Entente won't agree with this! I've got us a promise from Italy about military support but that was three years ago. I only barely managed to get Germany to help us fight Czechoslovakia and a trade agreement, but you want to throw that all away, Miklós!" He was not truly enraged more worried about what would happen and the general fallout that could affect Hungary and both their dreams of its restoration.
Horthy simply let a rare smile grace his rough face before taking a small sip from the coffee he had brought in for them both."Yes, if I brought back a Hasburg. If I bring back a Swedish or German king, that means they'll have to deal with those countries too." He then finished signing his name on some various documents giving consent for more factories to be constructed to reduce the Hungarian poverty level, all while he had nearly finished balancing the budget.
"You know.. Damn it, Horthy! You know Sweden won't lift a cowardly finger if those damn Romanians come marching up to Budapest and throw the king from his throne. Germany isn't our greatest fan either. Hitler wasn't best please when I mentioned we had plans to bring the Hungarian army up to modern standards. Nor was he fond of how we felt about the Jews in this country. You know what one of his SS whispered when helping to escort me? He called me a Jew lover merely because we don't discriminate against a fellow Hungarian." He let loose a sigh and finally picked up his own cup of coffee, drinking half of it in practically one go. "Why didn't you offer an Italian king at least?"
Horthy nodded and calmly responded."Because they've taken long enough to defeat Ethiopia, we can't rely on them to save us. Plus, Romania won't attack us. King Carol is too busy with his mistress to notice any such matters plus they have the bastard Communists on their front door, they are still angry over Bessarabia after all. France is too worried about Germany, same with the Czech's. Yugoslavia would probably fracture into all it's ethnic groups if it even tried anything. I do pay attention, you know."
The other man nodded before sighing once more." Well, what about parliament? You know the Social Democrats and the Arrow Cross are butting heads over the King and most MP's don't want a king. But that's where I come in don't I?"
Horthy merely nodded. "Grab a seat."
Hungary - March 12, 5 miles from Budapest in a small village, home of Richard Takács.
Gyula stepped from his car, his driver closing the door after him before getting back into the car and waiting, allowing the Prime Minister to knock on Richard's door. Richard was a member of parliament, a social democrat and wasn't much of a monarchist. Richard's wife opened the door and with a shock, quickly welcomed Gyula before sitting him down in the kitchen, offering him anything from tea to a sandwich. He merely smiled and waved her offers off."I only need to speak to your husband, nothing bad at all." She nodded and then left, a few moments later Richard walked into the kitchen, firmly shaking the PM's hand, he was a thin but tall figure this Richard, comparable to a street lamp but he was a good MP, hadn't been accused of corruption and seemed like a family man. "S-So, sir. What brings you to my home?" He asked, somewhat meekly out of worry before coughing and correcting himself.
Gyula simply smiled yet again." I want you, my dear boy. To vote for a king, I know you're part of the non voting bloc and I want that crushed. After all, all your friends have agreed and the vote only now depends on you!" He lied, he had said the exact same thing to several other MP's." I won't force you to vote for a specific king but if you want your family to prosper.. You must vote for one. Do you not remember how well off we were in the Empire's days?" Richard had to admit, his family was wealthier back then.. His father had owned three farms but after the war, his farmland had been raided by communists then Romanians, dropping them from upper class to upper working class, it had killed his father. Richard rubbed a hand through his slicked back hair before shaking his head." I can't, I think Hungary should be decided by the people!"
Once again, Gyula merely gave him another reassuring smile which seemed to help calm the man. "Ah, but that's the wonderful thing. We'll be keeping the parliamentary system, we'd be a constitutional monarchy much like Britain. That's worked out quite well for them, no?" The younger man once again had to admit, it had worked so far and the people would still be able to decide the laws.. He then remembered he had to be careful when he spoke like that, Gyula was Horthy's right hand man during the purging of the communists and while he was not a communist, talk like that could get him killed. If there was one weakness Richard had... It was his family and the idea of them prospering, his son not having to live like his father had during the 20's. It pleased him." Sir.. I will vote, yes." Gömbös grinned and then stood, shaking the young man's hand firmly. "Excellent my boy, maybe you'll be prime minister under this king, eh?" Both men had a small laugh before the older left. Leaving Richard thinking that maybe.. Maybe a king did bring promise.

Meanwhile in Budapest, a young messenger sprints through the parliament building and it's halls, carrying important news. He bursts into Horthy's private study as he was looking over some documents."My Regent!" He shouted, taking a few deep breaths. "The Germans! Th-They've re-militarized the Rhineland!" He then slammed the newspaper onto Horthy's desk. Horthy at this news shot up and beckoned the messenger to take a seat."Are the allies attacking?!" He demanded, picking up the newspaper in the meantime."N-No... They've only issued objections but no war has been declared." This caused Horthy to nod and he handed the boy some money."Take this as a thank you, say it's on top of your wage or something." He patted the fellow on the shoulder before he departed, this caused him to jump to his phone and immediately informed Gyula. This eased his tension and both talked about the issue for an hour. After the call, Horthy retook his seat. His guess about the allies being too busy or too worried to start another war had let Germany rearm even more.. This meant that the Little Entente would do nothing if lightning struck twice.

June 5th - 6:00pm - Parliamentary building.
Horthy and Gyula looked over the newspaper before both shaking their heads. Gyula spoke first."And this is why you don't let communists and anarchs have control!" Horthy nodded in agreement, the situation in Spain had gone badly. Now it was a civil war between Franco and his 'nationalists' against the Republican government. They would monitor the situation and if need be, would consider allowing Hungarians to volunteer or possibly send resources to the nationalists, as they didn't need another Communistic nation in Europe after all.
21st of May - 1:00pm - Discussion chamber of the Parliamentary Building.

The voting had gone on for months, it had taken discussions, face to face conversations, telephone calls, blackmail and various other methods but a result had been reached and the voting had finally ended. Horthy was the one to take the podium and speak of the result. "The assembly has voted, ninety eight votes for Prince Wilhelm, Duke of Södermanland. One hundred and one votes for Friedrich Franz, Hereditary Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Thus, we have chosen Friedrich Franz as our king!" The assembly let out a roar both of anger from those who had voted for the Swedish Prince and excitement from those who had voted for the Duke, a majority of those cheers coming from the Arrow Cross Party members as he matched their views. Richard had voted for the Swede, he did not cheer or taunt. He merely sat on his chair and nodded, it was democracy in action.. But his gut didn't feel right about it but at-least the new king wouldn't be here for a few more days and it would take him a few hours, maybe a day to hear the news.

Will he make Hungary great again? :p But your AAR inspired me to go for a democratic (Swedish King) run and it was interesting. I'll also make a small spoiler for an event that fired.

When Hungary neared war an event fired that made the Swedish King threaten that he would abdicate and join the Hungarian army if Sweden did not guarantee them. So it ended with the Sweden actually guaranteeing the indepence of Hungary. It was a pleasant and surprising event :p

Things continue to develop - I look forward to see how Horthy will face the upcoming years.

I wonder how this king is...

the King is a puppet

No worries

no worries at all

Chapter 2:God Save The King!

16th of August, Hungary, Regent Horthy's home, 6;00AM.

The old veteran looked over the newspaper and nodded in approval. Hungary had came third on the medal rank compared to some giants such as the US and the resurgent Germany. Hungary had taken home 16 medals, a modest amount but third highest. The US had taken 56 and Germany 89. The former admiral then flipped the pages of the newspaper, like all the rest this one talked about the coming German king and how Hungary would prosper or fall ill depending on which side the newspaper took.

25th of August, Ethiopia, 4:00PM.

Luigi Modeino gripped his rifle tighter as he loaded it again, the rest of his squad firing at the advancing Ethiopians, many of which only had swords. Italy had pushed in deep since the war started in 35 and now they were about to break through into Addis Ababa. He finished loading his rifle and took aim, placing the sights on some Ethiopian man the only one seemingly with a rifle in the mob of men that were attacking their dug in position. He felt the kick of the rifle slam into his shoulder as he fired and the rival rifleman fell like a bag of rocks, he pulled the bolt back on his rifle and began to fire again and again and again. The machine gun in their dug out mowing down men like a scythe through wheat. The Ethiopian lines began to waver before they broke after a few more minutes of sustained fire from the Italian positions. Luigi's superior, a veteran sergeant from the first war called Aldo jumped onto the sandbags, drawing a sword he had acquired from a dead Ethiopian in previous battles from his hip and shouting back to his men." Men of Italia! Who wants to live forever?!" He thus began his charge, Luigi and the rest of the squad following. It was clear Addis Ababa was finished and Italy had won.

October 6th, Munich.

Gyula Gömbös had been bed ridden for the past few days, he had originally come to Munich for a check up on his testicular cancer. He had kept this long illness from Horthy and everyone but his wife but it now seems he wouldn't even be able to see the king as it was due to arrive in Hungary tomorrow. Gyula coughed into his hand and grabbed the phone weakly, quickly contacting Horthy." Hello..? Ah yes, good. I'm glad I managed to get you Miklós. Just wanted to say, I want you to give the King my regards and I have a lot to tell you. Oh like, I'm dying currently for one. Anyway - Yes I know its a shock, but I won't make it back to Hungary, so.. Yes, I understand, I do apologize. Anyway, old friend. It's been an honor serving with you. If only you'd have agreed to be king, I could have seen one eh? Heh." The phone slipped out his hand and the Prime Minister of Hungary laid back and closed his eyes. Gyula died peacefully.

October 7th, Budapest, 3:00 PM.

Friedrich Franz's aircraft landed in Budapest a few minutes ago but it had taken a while to part the crowd that awaited him. He stepped outside, wearing his SS uniform as he didn't have any King clothes just yet. He waved to the screaming crowds of people and a smiled crossed his face.. He realized it was all his, he still had an oath to his leader Hitler but now he had his own Kingdom to rule. He would have to guide the nation well. He descended the stairs and Horthy stepped out of the royal carriage to greet him."Ah, Sir Franz... Or should I say King Franz of Hungary?" The old former regent smiled before pointing to the carriage. "The Prime Minister sends his regards but we can discuss everything in the carriage." The German shook his head before taking Horthy's hand and shaking it."Shame about Gyula, I heard he was a great man. But I must decline right now, I have my people to see." Horthy raised an eyebrow but before anyone could stop him, Friedrich Franz had already ordered the gates open and he walked into the crowd of people like a superstar, shaking hands, kissing babies and taking gifts from the Hungarians that had come to see him. The 'Bachelor King' as he would be called due to his lack of wife or even fiance seemed to be a hit with the crowd who eventually lifted him into the air and began to shout."God save the King!" Over and over again until the King jumped down from the crowd bowed to his people and in somewhat accurate Hungarian said."I will always strive to do my best for you!" The crowd went even louder and cheered him on more as he got into the carriage with Horthy, the police having to clear the crowd so the royal carriage could move.

Horthy looked the young king up and down, he was fit and active which was befitting his age of 26. He also looked far more younger than Horthy or even Gyula did but that could be due to stress they had from Hungary's situation. "So, are you planning any more stunts like that, my King?" Horthy asked, sounding like a disapproving father. Friedrich merely grinned yet again before placing his cap in his lap."One has to be a populist and a king in this times, my dear Prime Minister." Horthy raised an eyebrow and looked at him."Pardon?" The German's youthful grin merely widened and he patted Horthy on the knee."Yes, my dear friend. I have decided once I have been crowned you are to be my Prime Minister until we can get your rightful land back and make you an admiral. You can design ships if you please while we wait." Horthy nodded his head and they had some minor small talk until they reached the Royal Palace in Budapest where an even larger crowd awaited the soon to be King. Before Horthy could speak or an assistant could help the King he jumped from the carriage and in-front of the crowd of thousands shouted a declaration." I shall make it my main goal to see Hungary restored to the greatness it deserves no matter the cost, my friends! I promise to undo the injustices of the past that have been laid on you. Alongside our good man, Horthy!" Horthy by this point had stood beside the young German and had his hand grabbed then quickly raised in the air which made the crowd merely cheer and scream even louder. Horthy on the outside said nothing but inside made a mental note to check the King whenever he would get too.. Active. He was then ushered into the palace where Horthy placed the crown upon his head in a solemn ceremony. The now King quickly rushed out, wearing his ceremonial robes and crown, meeting the crowd of people yet again. Horthy noted it was something like out of a painting, like when Moses or Jesus would visit his people.

The 'Bachelor King'

October 8th, Budapest, Hungary, 5:00 PM.

The King's first major action was to attend the funeral of Gyula Gömbös who's body had been delivered to the capital to be honored. The King, Horthy and various other important political, spiritual and other leaders, as-well as various foreign dignitaries who had been sent to pay their respects. To help fuel his popular public image, Friedrich again did something not expected and helped to carry Gyula's coffin to the catafalque. The King made sure to meet with every dignitary at the event as-well as to make a small speech for the deceased Prime Minister. "I did not manage to meet, Mr. Gömbös in time but I have read his history and listened to his friends. He was a brave man who adored and did everything for Hungary, he destroyed communists and anti Hungarians that dared threaten his country! He made bonds of friendship with nations when needed but always made sure to look out for the common Hungarian man and his family. I will try to be as good as he was at rule. A toast!" The gathered mourners returned the King's words and all took a drink. They hovered around Gyula and his catafalque before he was moved to the public sector so the Hungarian people could pay their respects. Friedrich as he was preparing to leave made sure to help carry the various mourning gifts that had been given, the biggest being a commissioned painting of the man by an Italian artist which Mussolini had made and sent as a gift. Horthy made sure to return when no one else was in the same room as Gyula's corpse, a hand onto of his coffin."Old friend, you didn't deserve to die this young. I'll make sure I keep the king in check and myself as well. I owe you as much." He leaned forward and placed a kiss on the coffin before grabbing his hat and leaving.

11th of October, Hungary, 8:00PM.

The King and Prime Minister had been touring the factories and industrial centers of Hungary for a while now, they had been somewhat repaired and upgraded in Horthy's leadership but the King didn't see them as adequate enough. He promised the workers he would make the factories even better and when he returned to his office in the Parliamentary building he went to work, he had dissolved the parliament for this year until he deemed new elections were safe. This political move let him pass the Industrial Revitalization Act of 1936. Which meant that more military factories were built or expanded on, which he deemed would decrease unemployment. Horthy had checked the bill and gave it his signature thus cementing it into law.

19th of December, Hungary, Budapest royal palace, 2:00PM.

"Are you deluded!" Cried Horthy as he read the new Act the King had written. It was titled the Hungarian Restoration Bill and essentially was Franz denouncing the Treaty of Trianon."I support this but Hungary is not yet ready! Please you most see common sense in this." Horthy did note the irony that a few months ago he was in the same position but with Gyula screaming that he was a madman. The King merely finished his tea and a servant quickly hurried over to fill it back up. "Horthy, I was in Berlin and its interior, they all believed Carol II and his government to be too weak to do anything and too worried about the Soviets. You say the same in your very reports, I understand you want to do this when Hungary has a stronger army but if we wait now, they may recover from the shock of my kingship and attack us. A good attack will always lead the way, friend. Trust me, Romania will fold."

Horthy gritted his teeth before sighing and rubbing his temples."As you wish, I'll have the army placed on high alert just encase." This caused the King to smile and he stood, moving over to the aging now Prime Minister and patted him on the back."Thank you."

The Bill would soon be signed by Horthy and the country was placed on high alert with the most troops moving to the Hungarian - Romanian border to protect against any Romanian attack.

DUXd085.jpg

24th of December, Romania, Bucharest, 3:00PM.

Gheorghe Tatarescu was at a peace conference once again answering questions to reporters about the King's most recent scandal about how he kept throwing grand parties while many Romanians still suffered, he gave them the same old. "The King is allowed to host private parties." Spiel over and over until one reporter stood up and asked him a question he didn't expect. "Sir, what about Hungary denouncing the Treaty and refusing to do anything it outlines?" Damn it, he thought to himself. "The Government has not reached an answer to that yet. Next question." And whenever the question would arise he would give them the same answer over and over again.

Romania as the king had expected, folded.

2nd of January, Budapest, 1937, 12:00PM.

The King in a fine suit marched straight onto the stage and gave his people a salute before he spoke into the microphone."My friends, myself and Prime Minister Horthy have successfully shown Romania to be a paper tiger and also shown we are stronger than ever! With your continued support we shall be able to reclaim our rightful land and the oppressed Hungarians in our stolen land. Romania, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia! These are all names we should rightfully despise." His speech continued on for another thirty minutes until the King was soaked in sweat, the people seemingly grasped to his will. Horthy chuckled to himself as he stood a bit behind the king. He had sure learned from Hitler while he was in the SS.
