Horthy is probably there to give the Balkan nations an olive branch, as replacing/arresting him would make the other axis minors less keen on joining us.
I have to wonder whether this will mean Otto von Habsburg will actually ascend as King of Hungary or if the indefinite regency shall remain.

What about now?
Napoléon and Wellington must be both spinning in their graves.

Dunno about a Habsburg on the throne... do the hungarians will agree? Are the Allies willingto see the dynasty comming back? No so sure...

The Habsburg issue is probably the reason Hungary has a regency. There's no suitable local alternative, a Hohenzollern makes no sense, nor does one of the King's relatives. Actually, I doubt any monarch related to that of an Allied nation's king/queen. You start going through this with that in mind, and you can really only keep coming back to the Habsburgs, the family with the best claim and, theoretically, the least resentment from the Hungarian people. A regency is a logical extension of denying the Habsburgs claim.

They probably are rather mixed in feeling. On the one hand they are Austrians who deprived Hungary the complete freedom it wanted back during the old days before the Great War, but on the other they are 100% without a doubt the legal heirs to the throne with all other contenders having dubious claims at best and to be fair the Dual Monarchy situation actually placated them quite a bit. I think so long as the Austrians don't try to grab him back we shouldn't have a problem. Otto as a candidate would actually suite our interests quite well. He is very much in favor of Europeanism and a greater community of European nations as his old country of Austria-Hungary was basically operated off a similar concept of multiethnic cooperation. It would be quite an awkward situation with Austria if we choose the Field Marshal though. Knowing old military officers from Germanic countries he's probably a die hard monarchist, and the Hungarians would definitely not approve of another union with Austria. So he ends up as the dominant one we might have to split to domains a little and make sure Otto doesn't get both. Give Austria to his cousin if it comes to that, whatever. Or we could support the socialists just to throw the problem away and never have to deal with it. But I do think adding Otto to the Hungarian situation could give us a very pro-Ally element to the Hungarian government. Horthy has zero justification for continuing the regency and he absolutely knows it, and I suspect he'd rather get out of this with his head attached to his shoulders and Hungary remaining commie-free if it means having to stomach a Habsburg without any power standing around looking regal for everyone and acting like a loudspeaker for Entente ideas.

In short, get Otto's butt in Budapest if we can, and make sure that Field Marshal doesn't get the upper hand and muck it up with grand aspirations of restoring the Empire now that his favorite inbred dynasty has a country again.

For new readers:
- The German war was a disaster from the start
- Japan in response never joined the Axis
- With France still in the picture the Allies would eventually go to war with the Soviet Union
- Most of the Axis powers surrendered. Mussolini and Hitler both died
- The war with the Soviets rages on

18 - 25 June '41 - Attack on Pearl Harbor

"Yesterday, June 21st, 1941 — a date which will live in infamy — the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan."

- United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt to a Joint Session of Congress. June 22, 1941 -

(London)
So it has happened. The Japanese have gone to war with the world. This madness seem to have no end. The public is furious, the generals are scrambling. But one thing has Churchill sleeping well. The American have gone to war with the Japanese as well.

YET ANOTHER TRENCH WAR:
Trench.jpg
There has been a breakdown in communications in Sweden. British leaders are calling to fall back behind the Torn River, and to consider everything north, Russian occupied territory. The French, however keep pushing hard to pierce the Soviet defences. As a result the French had 10 000 casualties these last 14 days. If Field Marshal Weygand cannot clear out this blunder they've created he will most likely be replaced by another General. Weygand himself is furious at the British, and has called an extraordinary meeting with Churchill, and Ironside.

THE SOVIET ARMY MARCHES WEST:
Russia.jpg
That meeting might have to wait as we've just received news that the Russian army has started pushing west.
They're not moving fast, but for the time being we have nothing there to stop them. Only a few Canadian motorised infantry, which we have ordered to fall back.

RED AIR FORCE DECIMATES PORTUGUESE BOMBERS:
Redair.jpg
The Portuguese air force was the closest to bomb and prevent the oncoming Red Army. It was swiftly cut down by the advanced Red Air Force. 100 allied bombers were shot down in the battles above north Poland.

ATTACK ON PEARL HARBOR:
Dawn.jpg
Dawn, 21 June. The Americans know Japan is looking to strike against them, the intelligence reports told them it would be in the Philippines. They could not have been more wrong. Hawaii. Admiral Nagumo, and Yamamoto has moved the Imperial Japanese Navy into striking distance of Pearl Harbor. Their air carriers would carry the striking blow. Imperial fighters outfitted with torpedoes, dive bombers, with escorts. A clever cocktail of disaster.
Attack.jpg
Pearl Harbor is an American navy base, and home of countless ships. The newspapers are a bit off on their estimates. Intel are telling us it's between 3000 and 4000. But the numbers of ships lost are staggering. The Japanese empire hit the USA at the worst possible place. I'll read you the incomplete list:
over 25 ships sunk, or damaged in the attack:
  • AIR PLANE CARRIERS:
  • Lexington
  • Enterprise
  • BATTLESHIPS:
  • Arizona
  • Oklahoma
  • West Virginia
  • California
  • Nevada
  • Pennsylvania
  • Tennessee
  • Maryland
  • Utah
  • CRUISERS:
  • Helena
  • Raleigh
  • Honolulu
  • DESTROYERS:
  • 6 destroyers
  • AUXILIARIES:
  • 2 Transport ships
  • several other smaller ships
  • AIRPLANES:
  • 230 Aircrafts destroyed
  • 212 Aircrafts damaged
JAPAN INVADES HONG KONG:
HongKong.jpg
In a synchronised attack, the Japanese army now surrounding Hong Kong, launches an assault on our small garrison there. General Maltby is currently fighting them as we speak. Admiral Dudley Pound as asked the Pacific Fleet if we have the possibility of evacuating them. It has been given the name Operation Weekend, and they are drafting it up as we speak, but time's running out.

JAPAN DECLARES WAR ON THE BRITISH EMPIRE, AND THE USA:
Japanwar.jpg
We then received this declaration. A declaration of war was printed on the front page of all Japanese newspapers:

"By the grace of Heaven, Emperor of Japan Emperor Shōwa, seated on the throne occupied by the same dynasty from time immemorial, enjoin upon ye, Our loyal and brave subjects: We hereby declare War on the United States of America and the British Empire. The men and officers of Our Army and Navy shall do their utmost in prosecuting the war. Our public servants of various departments shall perform faithfully and diligently their respective duties; the entire nation with a united will shall mobilize their total strength so that nothing will miscarry in the attainment of Our war aims. To ensure the stability of East Asia and to contribute to world peace is the far-sighted policy..."

Etc, etc. Fair to say the Dutch East Indies officially joined the Allies immediately after the declaration.

USA DECLARES WAR ON JAPAN:
Congress.jpg
United States President Franklin D. Roosevelt went before a Joint Session of Congress on June 22, 1941, one day after the Empire of Japan's attack on the US naval base at Pearl Harbor.

"It will be recorded that the distance of Hawaii from Japan makes it obvious that the attack was deliberately planned many days or even weeks ago. During the intervening time the Japanese Government has deliberately sought to deceive the United States by false statements and expressions of hope for continued peace.

The attack yesterday on the Hawaiian Islands has caused severe damage to American naval and military forces. I regret to tell you that very many American lives have been lost. In addition American ships have been reported torpedoed on the high seas between San Francisco and Honolulu."

"I ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Saturday, June 21st, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire."

Within an hour of the speech, Congress passed a formal declaration of war against the Empire of Japan.

THE SECOND SINO-JAPANESE WAR:
China.jpg
The Chinese war with Japan begun in July 1937. Ever since then the Japanese army has made great progress winning hard fought battles after battles. Now they have surrounded Hong Kong and are in the process of closing a large pocket in south China. With the US entering the war, it seem that China under their leader Chiang Kai-shek is willing to join the US in an alliance against the aggressor. With Russia's war against us, they are less lenient into joining ours, as they receive some amount of supplies and equipment from the Reds. However, we can supply China a bit more discreet to help them fight our common enemy.

A NEW THEATER OF WAR:
Teater.jpg
The Royal Pacific fleet moved to Singapore in the nick of time. Now we have a fairly large fleet in the Pacific Theater, but the Imperial Japanese Navy is a great deal larger, so we will have to pick our battles. Also a fair amount of the Australians and the Indians, alongside the New Zealanders will be shipped back to India to cover the Burma region. It's important that we create a strong defensive line in Burma, and in the islands north of Australia.

A CALL IN THE NIGHT:
Night.jpg
2 days ago Churchill sent a most secret telegram from the American embassy to Roosevelt. Saying that now both countries are at war. that their common enemy is Japan, and that an alliance would be beneficial to both. Roosevelt on the other hand sees things differently. Japan is one thing, Russia is a whole other. He cannot in good conscious pull the American people into a war they have nothing to do with.

The answer, was no.
England endures.

Funny how America's declaration of war on Japan was the same day Barbarossa happened in OTL.

Despite the lack of military support from the Yanks, we could probably still expect some industrial and equipment support, for use against "Japan."

Actually, this could put the US on a path to war with the Soviets. They have allied the KMT, once Japan is down, the Chinese Civil War kick back in, and Soviet intervention in the east could make em end up at war with the US.

I know, it's a far fetch.

But now that I've started thinking, this really is becoming the prequel to 1984

They sunk the Enterprise? Bastards!

At least Japan is going to be dealt with now. And when they are, the soviets can be hit all along their entire border. Stalin must be cussing up a storm. Almost certain victory has turned into 'dear god I hope I reach France and knock the Europeans out of the war before I have to defend the whole of Siberia as well...'

Interesting times.

If the Lexington and the Enterprise were lost, this could be very bad indeed. Especially given the damnfool Yanks won't actually join the alliance.

People, those are the ships that are eit her sunk or damaged. But I would like to know the more exact losses
Uh, we know. Hence the 'ifs' and the question marks.

In this world, the Decisive Battle Doctrine works nice for IJN. We will see how many dead sailors and marines will be enough for US public...

...and this time, no surrender of Singapore. Seriously. You should appoint someone whose not filthy coward like that rat called Percival. It's part of the reason why Japanese treated Allied soldiers like they did - surrender changes soldiers into something lower than dog in their eyes. Enemy is respected by Asians only if feared.

And Churchill's nightmare is now real: there are two separate wars with no direct alliances on both sides. And Stalin, if he wanted to do so, may start trade deals with with Japan through Siberia, because longer and bloodier Pacific War is in USSR's best interest.

Ouch, the Japanese choose to be nasty and dirty, in the end, as it was expected.

PS: The USS Cassin has been upgraded from destroyer to battleship? ;)

It was just a matter of time. We should now hope that Stalin does the same mistake of Hitler, otherwise we will have to fight on our own.
Roosevelt would intervene, the problem is that he is hostage of the congress

MID WEEK Q&A

try to spark a war between the Japanese and the Russians without our involvement being required at all.
There might be something happening behind those borders as we speak
Wonder what Romania's and Bulgaria's part in this whole mess is. They don't have many options, I doubt the Russians will let them keep their monarchs.
I think they're biding their time. They're ready to surrender, it's all formality at this point.
May I ask who this Fyodor Vasilievich is since when I looked him up all I found was a communist writer.
Time will tell if he's of any use.
Was the Lexington and Enterprise sunk or just damaged?
Sunk. I'll post a up to date list this upcoming sunday.
Let hope Dudley pound can deal with these Japanese upstarts!
We should be able to move most of the fleets not engaged in ASW to the Pacific.

At least Japan is going to be dealt with now. And when they are, the soviets can be hit all along their entire border.
Japanese are running out of iron and fuel, and their economy may crumble soon without it. If no one will talk to them, stubbornly refusing to acknowledge Japanese-dominated Manchuria/Northern China, they will be forced to do something stupid and costly for both sides.
Actually, this could put the US on a path to war with the Soviets.
It was just a matter of time. We should now hope that Stalin does the same mistake of Hitler, otherwise we will have to fight on our own.

Yes, I've had a look at all of this and it leads me down two paths for the Russians.

VOTE ON TURN OF EVENTS:
voteAB.jpg

PATH A: Would be a Russian declaration of neutrality with Japan. A non-aggression pact, and would be very much identical to the one that happened IRL. This would alleviate problems for the Russians in the Far East, where they would be able to put those troops to good use in Europe. Also it would help Japan in pursuing a better oil trading deal with Russia. leaving them less desperate to push south and into the pacific. There would be less of a chance of the USA joining the Allies.
the negative aspect is that it would leave Japan fighting USA, France, China, UK, the Commonwealth, and the rest of the allies all alone, and when they would inevitably lose it could leave Russia at a two front war with the Allies in their backyard.

PATH B: Japan and Russia would find a pact closer to an alliance (like that of the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact), and spheres of interest between the two powers would be defined. where Japan would have its needs met in terms of resources, and the Russians would have a strong naval defensive player in the east covering them.
the negative aspect is that it would leave Russia at war with Nationalist China and the USA (USA would immediately join the Allies). Without having closed off Europe it would be hard to take France before the Americans could reinforce it. There is however a real chance that Japan would fall by American hands and then the USA would be dragged into the war regardless in a year's time.

I'll close the vote on Thursday.
