I wonder what turkey's politics are like? It might be a good idea to start courting them to the allies side. If Hatay is still in French hands, we could promise them that if they ally with us instead of Germany.

Yeah, OOC I think that a unified, demilitarised Germany is probably the best result coming out of this, but even that is unlikely seeing as how we got ourselves dragged into this pointless war with the USSR.

MacGowan can always afford luxury to retreat to the Home Islands, be only defensive, take his time to develop these experimental uranium devices and return with RAF's angels of death.

Total nuclear bombardment of Germany, USSR and everyone else who dare to stand in British way of life. They should receive only fire and blood.

29 January - 5 February '41 - The final fall of Finland

"A red Europe!"

(London)
Morning, old chap. How are the wife and children? I'll have Ms. Darling bring us some tea and biscuits. The war has taken a another turn for the worse. Not that we didn't foresee it, but it is gradually escalating. The Battle of Finland is over. The Third Reich is putting it all on black. And the Allies? We are yet again on the defensive.

THE NEW THIRD REICH:
Germanyx.jpg
With President Hans Lammers uniting the Nazi Party once again, and a more slyer version of Hermann Goering acting as the Chancellor of Germany, the Huns have managed to keep the nation relatively intact. They've lost a substantial part of the industrial heart lands, and several large German speaking cities to the Allies. But still they fight on. Control and army intelligence are now telling us the Huns are mobilising a vast number of men from the now quiet Western front to cold Russia, in order to win the war raging on there.

ALEXANDER POKRYSHKIN VS THE IRON FALCON:
Aces.jpg
Hermann Graf, known outside of Germany as the Iron Falcon is the premier fighter pilot ace of the Luftwaffe. He now sports a terrifying 228 victories to the enemy of his nation. Most of which have been against the Allies. Now however, he, alongside millions of other men, has been diverted to the East front to quell Stalin's thirst for world dominance. There Seem to be quite the talk about him doing so too. The German men need heroes, and even though the German top command knows the danger how having another Manfred von Richthofen, to eventually be placed at the alter of sacrifice. It is out of their hands for the moment. Russian Alexander Pokryshkin has 42 victories (most French and Finnish) Apparently Pokryshkin has been a big help for the Soviet combat doctrine as he has refused to fight in their outdated ways. He was nearly arrested for it too, it seems, until his fame and victories earned him a promotion instead. There's a war being waged in the Black Sea. Thousands of fighter planes have been diverted to claim air superiority there, and soon one will have to back down. Either the Luftwaffe, or the Red Air Force.

THE MEDITERRANEAN CRISIS:
Italy.jpg
So, the Germans still have some steel in their veins. A mere day after the armistice was in full effect, the main brunt of the bloody Mediterranean Kriegsmarine sets sail. We are talking about 100s of ships. simply setting sail without giving the British or French government ANY prior knowledge. Admiral Boyle of the Mediterranean fleet called up his superiors immediately for advice. The Germans cannot simply set sail into Allied control waters? The whole situation almost destroyed the armistice within 24 hours of signing it. Had it not been for the French fleet in the Mediterranean standing down, allowing them to pass, and by doing so forcing Admiral Boyle to do the same.
It appears the fleet is moving towards Kiel, or the ports surrounding it. We believe the Germans wish to use it in their war against the Soviets. We might even let them pass into the Baltic. What mad, mad, world we live in. plotting with the Germans. It makes me sick to my stomach, old boy! But don't you worry, Churchill has ordered Dudley Pound to keep a close watch in the North Sea. We will destroy the whole rotting German navy in one day if it comes to it.

THE BATTLE OF HELSINKI:
Finlandbattle.jpg
10:00, 27th February, the Russians meet the Finnish army outside of Helsinki. A terrible battle rages that last for 2 days. When it is clear that the Soviets have won and will capture Helsinki, the inventible surrender of the Finnish army is called for. Finnish President Risto Ryti, signs the surrender.

THE DESTRUCTION OF THE FRENCH EXPEDITIONARY AIR FORCE:
FEAF.jpg
During the chaos, Soviet forces, alongside the newly created Soviet friendly, Helsinki Army, seize the FEAF. And they destroy it. 3 French wings. That is 518 Fighter planes, 520 bomber planes. All destroyed, on the ground. Not to mention the French elite pilots captured. All because some bloody fools in the French air force could not open their eyes to the coming catastrophe. General Weygand called it a national disgrace.

THE FALL OF FINLAND:
Finland.jpg
As mentioned, the Helsinki Army was created a few days ago alongside the Helsinki State. Which is a Communist client state of the USSR. Assigned to handle the transition from Finnish to Russian. For the Russians intend to keep Finland. And use whatever army they can take from them against us. Which they did a few days ago. The Russians are winning in the North now. And I fear for Norway and Sweden.

RAF REDEPLOYMENT:
RAF.jpg
In the wake of the German armistice, and now the Finnish surrender, we have diverted the bombing group from Oslo closer to the new Soviet border, and the Canadian fighter wing to the Auchinleck line in the north. There are some very substantial logistical limitations though. It is winter, we are trying to send hundreds of thousands of men to Narvik? with planes and cars, and what have you. Our limitations are quite stretched as it is. And i fear we will have to do with 10 divisions in the north, and a limited air force.

OPERATION SEAWATER FAILS:
Seawater.jpg
Remember the Helsinki army? the bastards ratted us out. 17:00 1 February. General Adrian Carton De Wiart was assigned the hastily order to take Aaland/Ahvenanmaa. In the night they moved to take the islands, but where spotted by the Helsinki Army who then called in reinforcements. General Carton De Wiart knew the invasion was doomed to fail, as speed and the element of surprise were the necessary components for it to succeed. He pulled back and the Canadian motorised division were called in to reinforce Stockholm. Cunningham's Bomber wing had also been called in for Operation Seawater were then told to continue their bombing runs. If the Soviets want that island, they'll have to endure the rain of bombs.

So there you have it. Scandinavia in a very precarious situation. Aaland is hard for the Soviets to use as a push into Sweden, but not impossible. And what about those paratroopers we have been so frightened of? the Germans never managed to refine their potential, but the Reds might! And the Auchinleck line, up there in the frozen mountains, at the end of the world. How many more men can we successfully send up there without them starving, or freezing to death.

Questions, dear friend.
The war rages on.

England endures

I like the thing you added for new readers, summarizing some of the major events of the war. Hans Lammers looks like a demon, are you sure he was the right choice?

I don't know, he reflects his government quite well.

1941 will be the year of battle with the Soviets. We need to bring as many materials to Scandinavia and the Middle East to launch our own offensive against the Red Tide. What is the status of Hatay and Rhodes. Together with Cyprus, and the promise of Armenia, we could toffer that to the Turks to join our cause.

Edit: Azerbaijan could also be promised to the Persians

Quick question: If the symbol for the Comintern is the hammer and sickle, and the symbol for the Axis is the Iron cross, what is the symbol for the Allies? not the white star since the US is not in it, and with a strong French presence. Any good ideas?

Some suggestions:
  • The Torch - still has some American implications, but also pretty French
  • The United Nations 1943-48 Honour Flag
  • Simply the British and French flags combined, since every Allied nation that isn't them or one of their colonies is very much a minor player
  • The NATO Compass Rose.

A combined Lion and Fleur de Lis. The Fleur de Lis is obviously french, and the lion passes not only for Brittain and her dominions, but many of the minors as well. But because france is a republic and the Fleur de Lis is a monarchist symbol, it might not pass

Is there any way we can squeeze Italy into a symbol? I doubt they'd appreciate the allied flag representing only Britain and France.

I'm in favor of the torch, it would be universal and still have a strong symbolic significance.
Maybe something like this?

I'm terrified at the loss of three whole French air wings...

Terribly sorry for being late, old boy. The War cabinet meeting went on for a bit longer than I had expected. Not to mention the cold is causing havoc on the London traffic. The armistice with Germany is still holding up as the Allies lick their wounds and begin redeploying their forces. Most of our armies will still be stationed in The British sector, occupied German land, creating the new Weygand line. Or in Italy, moving in to the cold Alps. In the North we are holding as Soviet forces are slow to reinforce the newly captured Finnish territories. Auchinleck has looked at the logistics and he is saying that we will not be able to support a larger army in the north, and that we will have to work with what we have. The good news is if the Russians are to attack it will take them some time. Our estimates are 2 months before they would be able to amass a large enough army.

BOMBING AALAND/AHVENANMAA:
Bombing.jpg
Unless they go through the Aaland that is. A series of smaller islands that connect Finland straight to the heart of Sweden, to its capital Stockholm. Last week General Carton De Wiart attempted to seize the islands in order to prevent any such invasion occurring. The operation failed. However all is not lost, as whoever controls those islands are vulnerable to counter-attacks and that is exactly what we are doing. If the Russians want those islands then they will have to pay. We launched a large bombing raid backed with shore bombardment from the Swedish costal fleet all week, and our estimates are 3 000 wounded or expired Soviet soldiers. It seems the brunt of the Red Air Force is occupied on the east front, and therefor we can give them a proper trashing in the north.

THE BATTLE OF THE BLACK SEA:
Blacksea.jpg
It has raged for 2 weeks now, as Germany is desperate to keep Romania in the game. Both sides have taken heavy casualties on the east front and it must be important for both sides to score that important symbolic win. We're not sure what their objective is at this time. Perhaps to bomb the Russians back at Odessa. But in any case we believe we are looking at over a 1000 airplanes shot down during the 2 weeks, and the battle is far from over.

REDEPLOYING TO ASIA:
Burma.jpg
In the second phase of our large redeployment operation we have begun to look at Japan as a serious potential threat this year. The Chinese are loosing their war and the Japanese are desperate to break the American oil embargo. In the wake of the German armistice we decided to reroute the 2 Australian infantry divisions headed for Alexandria and send them to India instead. There they met up with 2 new British Raj divisions before boarding trains headed for the Burma region. That is the border area we share with China. In the south we are in the process of picking up 1 New Zealand division that should arrive in a month, and 1 RAAF bomber wing to give ground support if needed. Further reinforcements will involve a small fighter wing when we can find one to divert to the area, and of course a decent size of the Mediterranean fleet is to be reorganised into the New Pacific fleet. We don't have the manpower to fight Japan, but we do have enough to give them a good run for their money. Hopefully that will be enough to ward of any potential war with them.

FURTHER CANADIAN REINFORCEMENTS:
Canada.jpg
The Canadians are incredible. This week the newly created 7th mechanised infantry division were ready to board trains to Halifax, awaiting the Royal Auxiliary fleet. This time they will be sent to Italy to bolster our defences there as The supply lines in Narvik are stretched thin as the newly created Royal Canadian Second Air force fighter wing has been assigned there to strengthen our Air defences.

REBUILDING THE AUSTRALIAN FLEET:
Australian.jpg
After the terrible battle of Taranto in july, the Australian fleet has been in ports at Alexandria undergoing massive repairs. This week a destroyer flotilla from Australia arrived to link up with the ships there in hope of creating the new Australian fleet within 1941. Admiral Collins and the Australian navy are now working on finding ways to further strengthen the fleet in the hopes that it can be diverted to the Pacific before 1942.

CONVOYS AND THE RED WOLVES:
Convoy.jpg
Speaking of ships. This week we lost another merchant ship to the ever tenacious Red Wolves submarine fleet. In good news 20 more escorts came of the line. And it does seem that the Atlantic war is under control, but it took us 124 ships to get to where we are now. I don't even want to think of how many British tons have been sent to the ocean floor..

FEBRUARY AND BRITAIN:
Production.jpg
With the ever maximising of our factory efficiency by Max Eitken, and the calm of the German armistice our output seem to rather sublime now. The brand new aircraft carrier HMS formidable. 3 Mountaineer divisions, and 2 AA attachments will stand ready next week. A splendid add to all branches of the military. Sea, ground, air will all stand a little better after next week. jolly good, old chap!

HMS COURAGEOUS AND CAPTAIN W. T. MAKEIG-JONES:
HMS.jpg
Captain W.T. Makeig-Jones looks to be promoted and decorated after his HMS Courage has proven itself highly valuable in the war. A ship built in 1916 none the less! Her battle record is rather astonishing under the current captain. Battleship: RN Conte di Cavour, RN Guilio Caesar, Oktyabrskaya Revolutsiya. Escort carrier: RN Giuseppe Miraglia. Heavy cruiser: Admiral Graf Spee. 13 Destroyers (2 DD Flotillas). 44 Transport ships. (2 Transport flotillas). All within 2 years. She is now in the Mediterranean, under the Mediterranean fleet, awaiting new orders.

Will she be sent to the Pacific to battle the war thirsty Japanese? Will the German armistice fall apart? Or will the Soviets move into the Mediterranean with their deadly submarines?

We will have to wait and see.
England expects.
