18 - 25 December '40 - Christmas in war-torn Europe
"This is a strange Christmas Eve. Almost the whole world is locked in deadly struggle, and, with the most terrible weapons which science can devise, the nations advance upon each other."
- Winston Churchill, December. 1940 -
(London)
Merry Christmas, Old boy, terribly sorry for having you come in today, but as you know the war never takes a day off, and this week has been anything but quiet. I'll try and be quick so we can both get back to our loved ones. I made some tea, it's on the stove and it tastes bloody awful. Too bad Ms. Darling has the day off.
It seems that the threat of the
Red Wolves has died out for the time being. There are numerous reasons for this. One I suspect is the ever problematic logistic of supplying and repairing those enemy submarines from so far away. another is our vigilant patrols in the areas most vulnerable. However, we should not ignore the hugely impactful role the convoy escorts have played in maintaining our trade lines. For every merchant vessel that leave port there's an escort ship following. And thus we have created large convoys protected by a net of small destroyers. This week saw further improvement to that project as 20 more escorts were diverted to it. Hopefully the
Red Wolves will now be a footnote in the history of this war.
The Northern front continues to grow in size and scale, as the Soviets continue to press from the East. Key British Generals believe Finland is a mere month from surrendering. It has the look and feel of a smaller theater of war, but make no mistake about it. Scandinavia is crucial to the war effort. It is the only current direct front we have to Russia, and loosing it would mean giving the Reds all the means to create a strong naval presence, and the Iron ore to go with it. We need to look into diverting large specialised armies into Finland as soon as possible.
THE BATTLE OF RIBERSBORGS BEACH:
Last week the Germans yet again attempted to push into Sweden by launching an attack on the Malmo shoreline. After several days of attack, the invading force was pushed out of Ribersborgs beach and back into Copenhagen. The united effort of British, Norwegian, Finnish, and Swedish forces eventually secured the beach and I believe we can keep Germany out of Sweden by diverting another small division to the city, and thus repel any further attacks.
The moment we marched into Alta with our Canadian Motorised division the Russians attacked. I don't believe they were excepting us so soon, as the attacking force is rather un-organised. But there's little doubt in my mind that this force will be reinforced as soon as possible. General Auchinleck and the Norwegians are right behind, and should be in Alta by 29th to strengthen our defences. Regardless, further forces must be diverted to North Norway in order to hold the line.
AT THE GATES OF HELSINKI:
More headache for Churchill. The Red Army successfully reached and captured Kouvola 2 weeks ago, and are now only 135 Kilometers away from the Finnish capital Helsinki. We believe the Finns are dangerously close to surrender. Or worse, total collapse, letting the Red army pour over our borders.
THE ISSUE OF AHVENANMAA/AALAND:
So, we can divert forces to close up Malmo, and North Norway. But the issue has also been brought up concerning Ahvenanmaa/Aaland. A group of islands close to both Sweden and Finland. And one that Swedish general Thörnell is worried the Soviet forces will use to push into Sweden. So now the situation is further complicated. To secure Scandinavia from hostile forces we need enough men to close down North Norway, South Sweden, and now a possible attack into the heart of Sweden. The island would need several divisions and air support to match. We might be looking at 15 divisions out of Europe...
Well the Norwegian units did say they wanted to go home.
As the desperate attempt of re-invading Malmo left our Chiefs of staff perplexed, the attacks in Italy was equally surreal. Germany's two most important fronts are under heavy strain. Neither of which are in Italy. We have been playing a defensive game ever since the disaster of
Operation Charlie, and even though we have suffered heavy losses, we have gained greatly from strategic retreats and analysing the risk factor.
THE BATTLE OF THE IRONSIDE LINE:
On December 14th, General Busch launched his desperate attack on Milan and Bologna. The fighting would prove to be a heavy one for the Allies as they were evenly matched by Jerry. However, by diverting quick moving cavalry forces from Parma, Ironside was eventually able to reinforce Milan and Bologna in time to repel the attack. We are still in control, and now the Italians have finally decided to enter the battle.
ITALIAN MILITIA ARMY SHOWS UP:
After months since the collapse of Mussolini's Italy, the new Allied formed government could finally send the first wave of the Allied Italian army. 3 bloody Militia forces! Ironside threw his ashtray at the wall when he first heard the news. Then he ordered them to the bloody front lines. If Italy will give us nothing but militia forces to fight the Germans with, well then the Italians will die on the front lines as Militia forces.
THE ITALIAN COMMUNIST PARTISANS DESTROYED:
Speaking of Italians. The Communist partisans who took Udine were this week captured, arrested and then executed by the German army. Intelligence reports are saying Jerry's now occupied with cleaning up the mess they left all the way back to Pola. That should give us plenty of time to reinforce the
Ironside line.
For the first time this war we are now out of the trenches and on the fast pace moving East. The French have been quite cautious, fearing a backlash within their own ranks. But the opposite has occurred. Paris has been as quiet as ever. First with Weygand's destruction of Mussolini's Italy, and now with General de La Porte du Theil and De Gaulle's quick push through the Lowlands with minimal casualties. The French population is rather pleased with this turn of events.
SECOND RAF FIGHTER COMMAND REDEPLOYED:
With the fast movement on the Western front, the Luftwaffe decided to mobilise large wings of bomber planes to assault the vast Allied forces moving out in the open. To remedy this we have diverted RAF Air Chief Marshall Portal and his Second Fighter command from his post in Sweden to Metz in order to protect our boys on the ground. The Fighting RAF is back in Europe again
THE BATTLE OF TRIER CONTINUES:
The
Siegfried Line still stands, and so does Trier. We have thrown everything into this attempted encirclement of the German army stationed at the Siegfried Line, but the Huns are dug in deep. Reports are coming in of heavy casualties on our sides. Hopefully we can push through it soon and vanquish Jerry in the next days.
THE FRENCH CAPTURES NEUWIED:
Some better news: The French have quickly moved into Neuwied and are currently holding it. Another great boost of morale for France. Jerry's busy trying to plug all the holes in his sinking ship, and when he does we poke new ones. If he's so adamant at holding Trier and The
Siegfried Line, well then we will move around.
And the best news of all. Bielefeld: This is where the British army has pushed the furthest into the German heartland. A mere 388 kilometers from Berlin. And we should have around 30 divisions there by next week. Bielefeld has quickly become the spearhead of the entire Allied push into Germany. The end is near for Goering.
THE BATTLE OF WILHELMSHAVEN:
While the war's raging on, the Canadians and Indians found Wilhelmshaven less than optimally defended and decided to have go at it. With Home fleet patrolling the waters north of it we could capture the ports with the entire North sea Kriegsmarine forced to stay at bay.
With the many battles this week, it was hard for our troops to have some much needed rest. Wherever we could we were sure to send Christmas supplies to our boys, and so behind the immediate front lines the Christmas celebrations were in full effect. It might not have been the Christmas truce of
The Great War. But for our boys I think it sufficed. At least they're not fighting the Reds in Poland.
THE EASTER FRONT:
Soviet wounded/captured/killed: 40 000
Axis wounded/captured/killed: 25 000
The numbers are pretty rough, but it's the best we have.
Red Sirius is what they're calling it. The great invasion of Europe. Germany, Romania, Finland, Hungary. All to be subjugated to the great Soviet nation. Stalin has called his soldiers to war, citing enemy war mongering all over their western borders. He's not far from the truth either, and the Russians know it. The Germans hate them. The invasion has been less than optimal however. Even with the Russian's last year of gearing up, they are still moving at a snails pace.
SOVIETS ADVANCING INTO ROMANIA:
Operation Titan. The direct invasion of Romania and Germany. If Jerry has been able to stop the Soviet invasion, then the Romanians are their mirror opposite. The Red army has slowly, but surely advanced over miles of Romanian territory and Germany's now in real threat of being flanked. The days of
The Great war is back with a vengeance.
THE FIGHT FOR POLISH GROUND:
The Germans have managed to hold the Red army in places like Chelm, and in doing so shore up the main brunt of the invading army. The North is a different matter as miles of German occupied Polish territory has fallen to the Russians. This is where the most casualties have been inflicted, and Goering's spearhead is now in danger of being slowly encircled by a wave of enemy soldiers who are more than willing to travel miles and miles around unwanted defensive structures.
Speaking of the Bloody Reds. Ironside, and Control have been vocal in their fear of an invasion of Iran and Turkey in order to open up a front against our undefended North Africa. We do not believe Stalin has the means to do so in the mids of December. But it could come soon enough. Therefore we are devising a contingency plan to discourage him of doing so. As of now we know we will need to divert 20 divisions to the African continent in order to delay any enemy movement against our African colonies. If the Turks are invaded we could also hopefully use their troops to our benefit. But the possibility of them being coerced into joining the Comintern is also very real. As we speak the 2 Australian divisions on route will be the first deployed to plan O1. Now I know, I know, old boy. 20 divisions are a lot of men. But we aren't talking about the best of the best. We just need enough cannon fodder to bluff our way out it.
Oh, and before you go back to your family. Churchill held a speech yesterday at BBC. The newspapers wrote all about it and I thought you should have a read before you jump in you car.
I'll see you here next week.
CHURCHILL'S CHRISTMAS SPEECH:
"Ill would it be for us this Christmastide if we were not sure that no greed for the land or wealth of any other people, no vulgar ambition, no morbid lust for material gain at the expense of others, had led us to the field.
Here, in the midst of war, raging and roaring over all the lands and seas, here, amid all the tumult, we have tonight the peace of the spirit in each cottage home and in every generous heart. Therefore we may cast aside for this night at least the cares and dangers which beset us, and make for the children an evening of happiness in a world of storm. Here, then, for one night only, each home throughout the English-speaking world should be a brightly-lighted island of happiness and peace.
Let the children have their night of fun and laughter. Let the gifts of Father Christmas delight their play. Let us grown-ups share to the full in their unstinted pleasures before we turn again to the stern task and the formidable years that lie before us, resolved that, by our sacrifice and daring, these same children shall not be robbed of their inheritance or denied their right to live in a free and decent world.
And so, in God's mercy, a happy Christmas to you all."
