26 June - 3 July '40 - Hold the Gort line!
"Come on, you sons of bitches! Do you want to live forever?"
- Sergeant Major Daniel Daly, June 1918 -
(London)
Afternoon, chap. Have a seat. Yesterday our defensive lines in Lille came under attack from a large German force. We believe it to be a part of a massive invasion of 300 000 soldiers. The battle is still raging on as we speak. The hour is now upon us. All the men have been issued a short poignant order from General Gort; "Here, but no further".
Back home Lord Halifax and the other ministers are vocal and concerned about the death toll of a prolonged Western defence. "We cannot sustain another long war of attrition." "we must seek peace". Churchill has pointed to the success in Italy, the success in Norway.
It is the 3rd of July 1940, and the Great war is back with a vengeance.
Let us start at the humble beginning of the week. The Royal Navy blockade might not be effective on the Germans, they have trade-agreements with too many land locked nations. Not to speak of the bloody backstabbing Russians trading vast recourses with them. Italy, however is another matter all together. Their merchant navy has not been able to get as much as a grain of dirt through our line of ships and sailors. Seems that the Germans shifted their strategy towards supplying Italy through their shared borders in the Alpes. But it's too little too late, as the French severed that link a few weeks ago. Italy continues to starve, and will starve until Mussolini surrenders.
SOVIET SUBMARINES SINK MERCHANT SHIPS OF THE COAST OF IRELAND:
All this does not mean we aren't susceptible to the same problems ourselves. The Soviet Submarine fleet is proving to be quite the slippery eel. Still wrecking havoc on our own Royal merchant fleet. This week 6 large tankers were sunk off the coast of Ireland! Bloody hell, chap! These red bastards are relentless. The last few months they have attacked convoys in the Indian seas, the cape of South Africa, Atlantic ocean, and now in our own back yard!
A few days ago the newly created West Channel Force was sent to patrol those waters. The moral of Britain is at stake. We'll need to teach the Red Wolfpack a thing or two about true naval warfare. Also, more convoy escorts are being diverted to the merchant navy in order to guarantee the safety of our supply lines.
SPANISH STATE UNDER AXIS PRESSURE:
More headaches... SIS could report last meeting that in the wake of Portugal's entrance in the war, Hitler and his men have been putting intense pressure on the Spanish State and General Franco to enter the war on their side. Portugal's defences are weak, Gibraltar an easy target, and of more importance; the French border is completely unprotected. They could enter the war and open up a new front. Churchill and Lord Halifax are now looking into ways to strengthen our diplomatic relations with Franco. To better our standings with Spain.
DE L'ARMEE DE L'AIR SLAUGHTERED OVER BELGIUM:
....What would you have me say? The air seems to belong solely to our enemies. This week the French and the Portuguese bomber raids was caught in yet another brilliant Luftwaffe ambush, 130 planes shot down, vital information lost, lives squandered.
The Allies bombing raid was a part of Operation Diesel, the slow retreat out of Brussels. They were also called in at the Battle of Mons, which raged shortly after. Jerry's throwing everything into this, chap. They overran the French and Belgium boys, 40 000 wounded, captured, or killed. the Germans took half of that; 20 000. A burning Mons was secured by the Germans on midnight June 30th.
Then, dawn, July 2nd. the German invasion begun. Artillery begun shelling our defences in Lille. Shortly after the Huns attacked. 20 divisions strong are crashing down on our boys on the Gort line. Look at this map here; The invasion force from Wilhelmshaven is mobilising towards the front. A few forces from the Maginot line also moving towards Mons. They have decided where the hammer will fall. Lille will be their breakthrough. Or so they think...
Also, Bruges was surrounded by smaller forces. Ironside asked the question: Should we send in Dunkirk force? Gort could secure the city and perhaps cause a bit of panic in the German war room. A flank could be made, or at least give Jerry something to worry about.
THE GORT LINE IN LILLE UNDER ATTACK:
His name is General Wilhelm Keitel: The supreme commander of the western front. He has pushed the Allied forces back from Holland, from Belgium. Lille is next on his agenda. Our forces are in the process of defending the initial invasion. Rain is on our side, and we are dug in well. But the enemy has better equipment, better training, and a bitter tenacity on their side. General Gort is in the process of reinforcing Mons with the few Norwegian, New Zealand, and Australian reserves we have left. Also, Longwy, and Sedan will next week launch their counter-attack: 8 British divisions moving in from the right. That should teach Keitel a thing or two!
There are too many soldiers on the western front now. We can only stop their initial attack, hope that our French can catch a much needed breather. Then we must look to Italy. For it is there where we can decide the war!
THE SINKING OF THE DUPLEIX:
The French handled even more losses as their damaged fleet in the Mediterranean lost another Heavy cruiser; The
Dupleix at the hands of floatplane bombers. The Italian navy's pushing hard, old boy. They need to open up the route from Africa to South Italy. They need to evacuate their men.
THE BATTLE OF THE GULF OF TUNIS:
The French thankfully weren't having any of it. They re-organised and found the fleet in question. the Light Cruiser
RN Taranto alongside 4 Italian destroyers were sunk in the battle of The Tunisian Gulf. It seems that the Italians can't do anything right at the moment. Their evacuations have been put on hold, at least for another week.
The Bloody fascists... Still they fight on. Even though their country is breaking, their neighbours rioting. There's a civil war breaking out.... This week Our British Indians re-captured and stopped the German flanking of Milan. God bless their hearts, chap. True soldiers they have proven to be. The Germans are now attempting a counter-attack from Bergamo and Taranto at his moment. And by the looks of it they're winning that battle. Now every hour counts. If we can hold them back until reinforcements arrive, or the French can flank them, or Rome falls. Every hour counts...
General Weygand is also doing his job to the merit of his name. The French legend; Le Vieil Homme as they call him with affection. His men captured the mountain terrains of Perugia. And if I may say so with a bit of pride in my voice. Our British Indian cavalry provided good help. Weygand and the invasion force are now in the process of digging-in on those mountains, readying for the push into Rome.
Also, The French Tigers of the Alpes broke through Axis defence lines in Belluno. We are not sure how long they can hold. Knowing them I'd put my money on forever. However, the flanking is doing a well enough job in causing confusion in the enemy lines.
Tomorrow our top 9 divisions from the reserves in France will arrive in Parma. British, New Zealand, Australian troops. Hopefully in time to secure the holes in our defence. Most of them will be diverted to the North to stop the Germans dead in their tracks. If we have to halt progress in the South and starve the Italians out, well, then we will do it.
GROWING THREAT OF WAR WITH JAPAN:
Ah, the United States. A name that does not come up often during these meetings. Well, the Empire of Japan has become quite the nuisance for them too. It seems that efforts into the construction of naval bases in the Pacific has begun. No doubt in case of a war with Japan. This could be considered both good and bad news for us I guess. The naval bases are good, and hopefully it will give the Yanks the means to proper kick some bums. But it seems that the war with Japan IS coming, and is coming sooner. Which is bloody bad news for us, since we have nothing but dust and pebbles to defend ourselves with in Asia at the moment.
THE SLOW RETREAT IN NORTH-AFRICA:
Speaking of dust and pebbles. The retreat in Africa is going rather well. The French held Siwah and stopped the Italians advancing there. They seem to be mobilising some of their forces away from the front lines now. Perhaps back to Benghazi, or Tunis to evacuate. They must be starving. Could we have won the battle of North-Africa like that? with nothing but the Allied navy?
And we're done for today, old boy.
Now we must bring the Italian fascists to their knees. We must hold the Gort Line against the nazis.. with every breath we have. Until next time.
England Expects.
