I played version 0.43 and without changes...
Germany
I played the mod between 10 and 15 hours.

I started in 1897. Starting the game I choosed the degree of difficulty "normal"... and the war broke out in march 1915 about 9 months too late,
I won the war after a half year, first I conquered France then Russia. The A-H were a great help for me but the Britians were no help for France...
The mod were good to play without one crash of HoI2 (german: Absturz des Spiels?), and until 1916 there were much events but after 1916 I missed
many events (for example: October Revolution in russia)...
And I would reduce the number of aircraft-units (I would suggest: Airship (zeppelin), strategic bomber, recon bomber, airplane and only one fighter unit...;as brigade possible: monoplane and triplane), and I couldn´t use the escort-planes because no aircraft units could use brigades...
Generally the AI behaves not thoughtfully enough... the game is tooo easy!!! but its great work until now!!!!!!

please apologize my english...

Mod version: 0.43 with 5.2.2 Dev add ons and Panda.zip's AI
Country: Germany
Time span: 1914 - 1916
When did the war start: Historically, August, 1914

-General Course of the Game:

All events fired correctly and historically, I piled my forced to the French and Russian borders. I went to war and chose "The War would be over in 40 Days" on the plan event. I plicked "offer Finland and Alands" in the Sweden event and they accepted.

I focused on taking out the Ruskies first, The AI played out well, Austria only lost 3 provences through the whole war (even though they never really fought, they just defended the fronts), Sweden pushed into Finland but was pushed back and had lost 2/3's of their territory by late 1915.

The Ottomans joined at historical date and that marked the end of the Russians, (it should be noted that around this time Austria lent me a few divisions which I used to take out Serbia) Their forces became to thinly spread and by late 1915 I was at St. Petersburg, bordering Moscow etc. The Ottomans were halfway up into Russia and the "Russian Defeated" event fired and pre-war borders of Russia were put into place.

I then moved all my Eastern troops to the west (took a few months to move all the troops :p ). For a few months Austria sent most of its forces to the Western front to back up mine as I moved my eastern forces west, but withdrew as soon as I started to make gains. I then overran Belgium pretty quick and took about half of France within 7 months and the "Entente Defeated" event fired (happened around august 1916) followed by the peace treaty which went according to code :D .

I chose to Annex Poland, Lithuania, Lativia, and Estonia. Now here is where the problems appeared. I chose war with the U.S. in the "Monroe Doctrine Enforced" event. Sadly due to the seemingly un-fixed surrender/victory events the U.S. instantly surrendered after declaring war, I also tried to declare war on the British with the same results.

I hope the Victory/Defeats get fixed for the final release. Other than that, good work on the mod. :)

Which version of the mod did you use? (If you added any extra changes or tweaks to the published mod yourself, please describe them).

0.43

Which country did you play as? (If you play a 'hands-off' game, that's useful to know too)

Austria Hungary

How long did you play for? (If you abandoned the game, it's still helpful to know what happened)

I started in 1911, played till July 1914. About 3 hours real time.

When did war break out in your game? (Was it at the historical time, earlier or later?)

It didnt. :D The Ottomans occupied most of the Balkans except Belgrade, which I occupied. No Serbia. I got the assassination message and then nothing happened.

Please describe the general course of the war. Which countries did well, and which did badly? If countries were conquered, how long did it take?

Well, not in WW1, but, the Ottomans started a war in the Balkans, took Bulgaria, most of Serbia (not Belgrade), Albania, Montenegro, a bit of Romania and northern Greece. They took it in about 6 months or a year, don't remember.

France and Spain got into a piss fit over Morocco and got into war in 1912 iirc. France annexed all of Spain.

If the AI did anything really stupid or unhistorical (such as a country lending its entire army to an ally), please let us know.

Italy and Germany lent me their entire armies, France annexed Spain.

I'm not sure if these too are really stupid or unhistorical since they could've happened but, Morocco got full independence and the Ottomans took back most of the Balkans.

Please let us know if there were any actual bugs in your game - such as events failing to work, ships appearing in land provinces, techs with no effect, pictures of jet fighters appearing in the unit roster, etc

A picture of some American WW2 bomber appeared when I was researching an early recon bomber. That's it really, that and the AI lending me it's whole army which was very fucking annoying.

Ok, I reloaded a 1913 save as the Ottomans and sued peace with Serbia so I could have WWI, I reloaded as A-H and WWI happened etc. However, the AI lending me it's army problem really made it unfun, since I had all these German units on both fronts, and I wasnt bothered. They lost 3 frickin province to Luxembourg, 2 to France and 2 to Belgium and 4 to Russia since they were all under MY control.

When is the next AI modification set?

Which version of the mod did you use?

Erm... I don't know really... I think the last one, as I downloaded it only a few weeks ago.

Which country did you play as?
I've tried multiple, but the one I commenting for is Germany

How long did you play for?
I started in 1897 and am now in late 1899/early 1900.

When did war break out in your game?
Well.... it's complicated. I'll explain in the next question.

Please describe the general course of the war. Which countries did well, and which did badly? If countries were conquered, how long did it take?

Okay, let me begin. First of, I like history. However, If I want to know about history, I read. If I play a game, I wanna play. So, you guessed it. After placing my starting troops a bit more strategically, I DOW'ed Denmark. I attacked with I think 8 troops, and won within a second.
My Bel. went up, so I decided to sit it out. The reason I had chosen Germany was to see all the neat events, so I had to be patient. However, patience wasn't my greatest point, so I DOW'ed Sweden. Somehow Sweden's puppet Norway stayed out of it, so Sweden was conquered. The logical next step: Norway.
It was just as easy. At september 11th Germany had conquered Scandinavia. Fearing Russia (those french are pussies) I decided to lower my bel. by liberating the conquered countries, wich gave me a dissent hit, but I could take it.

Then the most strange thing happened: Russia made the following proposal: In order to annoy Great Britain and the USA, Russia wanted to join the Centrals and the Entente together. Curiously, I accepted. Italy did as wel, but A-H didn't. So basically, the alliance was Germany, Russia, Italy and France. At that point, I was sad of loosing my friendliest allie, so I started influencing Austria (somehow, I had money like hell). Within a few months they liked me enough to return to the alliance, but France left.
So, basically, it was everyone against france, though there was no war yet.

Learning from history (and getting bored again) I wanted to walk over Belgium before they were Allied to france. But, afraid it would anger England or the USA (with whom I had quite a good relation), I decided to try my luck at the netherlands. Won within no time, liberated, but got Indonesia as my colony.

After that Belgium, not worth a breath, liberated as well. Through events my bel. went down, and although my dissent was high because all the liberating and DOW'ing, it never rose above 15, which I could easily manage.

Oh yes, somewhere in between there was this event making a part of ottoman empire my national provinces, and they gave in to my demands.

I dare you to guess the next step.
I really tried waiting. I really did. But my armies were building and there was nothing to do!
So, eventually, france. Immedeately dozens of 'digging in' events went off, followed by an event declaring there would never be a 'digging in' event. I first went through belgium and attacked rheims, and then started banging on the fortresses. I pushed right through (enormous numbers larger then the french, who where scattered to much), and even did some blitz-krieg style encircling. After I took Paris I began to notice Russian troops marching though Germany and Scandinavia. Within no time they took the battle of my hands, allways being a step ahead of me, except when it came to encircling, a tactic which RUssia obviously didn't grasped. Fortunately, Russia had to go through MY lands to fight the french, so every territory the conquered became mine.
Transports from Indonesia conquered Indochina (4 troops, no more), Two light infantry in afrika conquered those victory points and a landing in turin and Algiers finished them, about 1899.

This bothers me. What I noticed about 1914 mod was that everything was slower: Lower IC, armies moved slower, armies were produced slower. Although annoying, I really appreciated this because of its historic truth: back in 1897, production just wasn't as big as it is now.
But when I started playing germany, everything went super fast.
Strange?

If the AI did anything really stupid or unhistorical (such as a country lending its entire army to an ally), please let us know.
Well, I was one historical disaster but other then that.... Well, the obvious alliance Russia proposed was one.
And then there was the fact that Italy didn't put troops along it's borders with either A-H or France. Luckily, the bastards had me^^

Please let us know if there were any actual bugs in your game

Well, actually.. If trying to "Sue for Peace" with the demands of a few provinces and then "Make Puppet", the game crashed. This was with both Belgium and Sweden, two countries who had puppets themselves, perhaps that was a problem?
Also, I haven't reloaded it again, but an hour ago I suddently got a message "Denmark annexed Norway" (which are BOTH my puppets and allies), and the game crashed. Perhaps due to the whole puppet-net I got?

Now that the mod is approaching a playable state, we need help in fine-tuning things, getting the AI balanced, hunting down bugs, and generally improving everything. And here's how everybody can help:

When you play a game of 1914, please make a post to this thread describing the results. In particular, please let us know:

Which version of the mod did you use? (If you added any extra changes or tweaks to the published mod yourself, please describe them).

Ottoman Empire
How long did you play for? (If you abandoned the game, it's still helpful to know what happened)
2-3 Hours

Historical time
Please describe the general course of the war. Which countries did well, and which did badly? If countries were conquered, how long did it take?
As other said, Germany and austria didint do good until i stept in the war with my ten soldiers raiding provinces like bacu before the russians came. Germany got defeated way to easy.
If the AI did anything really stupid or unhistorical (such as a country lending its entire army to an ally), please let us know.
When i stept in to the Central powers. Germany did borrow me about 20% of its army size. And that is a lot because they really hade many divisions.
Please let us know if there were any actual bugs in your game - such as events failing to work, ships appearing in land provinces, techs with no effect, pictures of jet fighters appearing in the unit roster, etc)

Nope- Perfect - To short message so - AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:
With this information, we should be able to solve any problems more quickly - and it'll also be a good way to make sure the game is balanced. For example, a couple of people saying "Germany always gets massacred" might just be a coincidence - a dozen playtest reports here all saying the same thing means we need to sort things out.
fgjfgjfgjfgj
Plus it'll be interesting to see who's playing and as whom...
fgjfgjfgjfgj
Thanks for your help!

I tried a the 1911 scenario on hard / aggressive, playing as France. War broke out historically in August 1914, so I readied myself for the german offensive. But it never came. Even though Germany had declared war on Belgium, they never attacked, even though they had masses of troops on the border. I ended the game sometime early 1915 I think.

.43 baseline, Armageddon, Russia

Wanted to play as the Soviets so fucking bad, created minimalist (as in minimal provinces with plenty of troops) battle lines with the Germans, Ottomans and Austrians to allow me to do other things while waiting for 1917. 1917 rolls around, I become the Provisional Republic, then the Provisional Republic under Kerensky, then I took the authoritarian choice in that event in... August? Anyway, Nov 7, the Soviets seize power, I immediately pause it, save, and switch to them. Oh, but they don't control the vast majority of Russia, or any of its troops. Russia proper has like 102 IC, the Soviets have like 22. I can't believe I wasted all that time just to discover, oops, the soviets don't actual seize control of the whole nation, just a small chunk of it...

Well then, there's only one thing to do - crush the whites!

Addt'l events

Okay, I've played the game a couple times now, and I have to say first off, thanks so much for making this mod. It has ben a pleasure playing this mod and has giving me so much more to do with my HOI2 game.

That being said, I want to suggest that some additional events be added to the game for a more historical feeling. I, and apparently everyone else, has noticed that the central powers look like Tarzan but fight like Jane when it comes to the War to End All Wars. So, being the historical geek I am, I did some studying and came up with some events that maybe could give the Central Powers, especially Germany, an edge.

Now, you mentioned that you might keep Belgium out of the Entente to prevent French forces from assisting the Belgians. Don't, since historically, Belgium entered into Entente on Aug. 4, 1914 when Germany declared war on them. However, there are some events that actually happened that you might find interesting.

As we all know, and as the game acknowledges, Austria-Hungary sends Serbia its ultimatum on July 23, 1914. Serbia accepts 8 out of the 10 demands and requested arbitration in an international court. Austria-Hungary says no and declares war on July 28, 1914. After asking Germany for support, Russia, wanting to keep its interests in the Balkans, come to the Serbs aid by mobilizing their forces. Germany sees this and declares war on Russia on Aug. 1, 1914. Then Germany asked for French neutrality. When Frances hims-and-haws over an answer, Germany declares war on them on August 3, 1914.

Now, Belgium at this point isn't in the war. But Germany know a swift victory will be through Belgium, so they ask Belgium for military access. Belgium says no, honoring the 1839 treaty that Belgium would always be neutral. Germany calls the old treaty 'a scrap of paper' and declares war on Belgium on Aug 4, 1914. Britain then declares war on Germany once Germany invades Belgium.

Okay, so my thoughts: 1-Notice that the Serbs, while they enter the Entente once they've been DOW'd, historically the rest of the Entente join in the fun until Germany DOW Russia, France, and Belgium in Aug. 2-Belgium is given a legitimate chance to avoid war by the Germans, a possible event choice for Belgium that could swing the balance in the Germans favor. 3-Germans ask France for neutrality, but France balks. This again could be another event choice for the French that could alter history in the game.

When I played as the USA, the Central Powers were crushed within two years. As Germany, I crushed France within the year and made some considerable ground against Russia. So how to improve Germany's AI? I am not a programmer, so I can only say that Germany brought their Cavalry within 15 miles of Paris before French and British troops held them at the 1st Battle of the Marne. Maybe give Germany a head start militarily when the war begins, but add an event that gives additional troops to France once they get near Paris. Then stabilize the Western Front with those digging in events. It was trench warfare from that point on and literally no ground was really lost or gained on both sides until 1916. So if that helps great. If not, then I gave you a WW1 history lesson for free. Cheers!

Other notes on the game:
-Teddy Roosevelt helped end the Russo-Japanese war and received a Nobel Peace Prize for it. That event is not in the game, and in my opinion, should be! It is important!
-After I elect Taft for President as the USA, Teddy R. is still President
-When playing as Germany, after I talk all of continental France, I get none of that land when peace is declared and France isn't even my puppet, just a pissed off neighbor. I want to bend those Frenchies under my thumb dangit! How come this happens and is there a way to stop it?
-Italy doesn't join the Allies until May 23, 1915. They declare war on Germany on Aug 27, 1916

When you play a game of 1914, please make a post to this thread describing the results. In particular, please let us know:

Which version of the mod did you use? (If you added any extra changes or tweaks to the published mod yourself, please describe them).
v0.43 with some graphical addiditons by me, e.g. a reworked unit icon set plus a few added/corrected division pics, mostly navy (see the "Graphics"-thread).
Which country did you play as? (If you play a 'hands-off' game, that's useful to know too)
Japan, the Grand 1897 Campaign
How long did you play for? (If you abandoned the game, it's still helpful to know what happened)
Up to 1922.
When did war break out in your game? (Was it at the historical time, earlier or later?)
I can't say that anything exciting happened in this game. I had a few events where I could cange my Cabinet (appr. up to 1910). In 1914 Franz Ferdinand assassinated, a little rumour following: Germany is backing Austria-Hungary unconditionally, A-H threatens Serbia with war, Italy leaves the Dreibund.
Please describe the general course of the war. Which countries did well, and which did badly? If countries were conquered, how long did it take?
War between the Central Powers & Serbia broke out short after. Serbia overrun in a few months and annexed by... the Ottoman Empire! Entente (consisting of France and Russia) doesn't join the war, nor do the British or Italy.
All quiet in Europe & the rest of the world again.
If the AI did anything really stupid or unhistorical (such as a country lending its entire army to an ally), please let us know.
Europe was far away from me and war was short, so I didn't pay much attention to it.

Please let us know if there were any actual bugs in your game - such as events failing to work, ships appearing in land provinces, techs with no effect, pictures of jet fighters appearing in the unit roster, etc)
OK so.. I mainly wanted to test how the artwork fits in the game and where there are still graphics missing.
But first a few words in general.
  • The Japan skin is really very nice, but the UI's readability is suffering from it.
  • Japan starts with around ~60IC base, which make up to around ~45IC effective at the beginning of the scenario, but has a lot of ships in the build queue. They eat up all the IC for production and even exceed it. Not so good. Research on the internet revealed that most ships at that time were not home-built by Japan but purchased abroad, mostly from the British Empire. I think, that circumstance should be better dealt with with events, so that Japanese IC isn't affected.
  • Japan has torpedo boat destroyers in its navy, Pre-Dreadnought battleships in its build queue and also a division of guards infantry, but all that tech isn't researched
  • There are just very few tech teams, especially with aircraft tech and doctrines
  • Another curiosum was an event I got around 1918: It told me there would be a great uprising in Korea and I would lose all my core provinces there. Very strange, as
    • Korea was an independent country
    • I didn't have any cores on any Korean province
I got a huge amount of dissent and a war with Korea.
  • Air units, the aircraft & secret weapons techtrees still seem to be very much WIP, many artwork from the vanilla game there, often it only says "text"

Please make a new thread and post there ver 0.43. I will download it and fix what you mentioned here.
