Chapter VIII

Rommel was used to be in where he was. Far too used to.

“ARRGGHHH!!!”

Rommel crossed his arms, and pulled the triggers of his dual C96 handguns, dropping down his howling assailants. More assailants appeared, and Rommel drew his sawed-off Winchester m1897 shotgun and fired clusters of 12 gauge shotgun shells. The assailants then were all blasted off their feet to a couple of metres away.

“YYAAARRGGHHH!!!” Another assailant appeared behind Rommel’s back. Rommel easily dodged his attack before striking his opponent’s neck from the back with a pair of blades.

All around Rommel, everything then became quiet.

“Ooaaarrrrrghh…” the growling of the multiple fallen could be heard.

At least for a brief moment it was quiet.

Strangely enough, all the assailants got back to their feet, their red-hot eyes glowed against their skin with the same colour as the dark night. The wounds made to their torsos, limbs, and heads seemed nothing more than a few scratches to them.

Rommel was not used to the situation anymore, and he thought about how he got into the bloody mess he was in.

On board the Nautilus, January 1900

It was cold, cold and dark in the narrow corridors of the Nautilus. The captain’s cabin was adjacent to Rommel’s, and Rommel after a few knocks without response entered the cabin.

It was a small cabin, with everything cramped inside, but at-least it was a one-man cabin, just like Rommel’s.
“Perhaps he is in the navigation room…” thought Rommel, before he once again headed out into the dark corridors outside.

Rommel had been on the Nautilus for more than a month. Previously he had been in Algeria participating in multiple “exercises” with the local populations, almost a routine work everytime he arrived at the Legion’s birthplace. The Nautilus had took him across the Mediterranean and underneath the Suez Canal into the Indian Ocean. It was a very memorable experience to travel in a sous-marin, however to Rommel, life in a steel hull traveling beneath the ocean’s surface had become more and more unbearable.

“Arietta…” Rommel thought about Arietta again, as in all the days he spent without her. Rachmaninoff was a world-famed musician ever since his debut with the Tsar at the scene. Certainly he would get many more invitations from all over the world, and this also implied that Arietta would have to move with him all the time. This no doubt made it harder for Rommel to meet with the little girl again.

“Was I wrong to make myself her father… what can I do for her now…” thought Rommel.

At some point Rommel thought about deserting from the Legion and make a living with Arietta somewhere, somewhere where they could live peaceful for a lifetime. However, Rommel could not forgot how deserters were treated in the Legion, especially since he had met with one, Adjudant Alain Kemal, and his family. It was unwise for him to leave the Legion if he wish for the safety of Arietta and Rachmaninoff, at least before his current five year contract ends in roughly two more years.

There was also another reason that made Rommel unable to end his life as a legionnaire: did the old General Mercier had any connections with Arietta before? Why was Arietta left to him unlike the Maestro and the other girls?

Rommel was afraid, afraid of what dark secrets connected with Arietta were in the shadows waiting for him to discover. But was it also unwise by trying to maintain the status quo now?

Rommel reached the navigation room in a brief moment after he left the captain’s cabin. The Nautilus’ hull was over one hundred metres in length, but there was no trouble for Rommel to find his way through the steel marine beast’s interior after some time on board.

Inside the navigation room, the captain was with a few crew members. The crew were at their positions seemingly busy. The captain was seating on his command post looking through some files.

(First of all, we have the end of the Spanish American War, historic ending)

ScreenSave37.jpg

(The Yanks also got the Phillipines and Guam, along with a bunch of Phillipino Nationalists)

ScreenSave40.jpg

(I also got some Spanish Islands!! Through an event in which I purchased them. Yes, with money.)

6-2.jpg

(Some events: Faure died, don't miss him at all, and Meline took over)

6-3.jpg

(Aarrgghhh!! How dare them!!)

6-4.jpg

(Awww, the Italians also want a share of China. Let me think... of course not!!)

ScreenSave38.jpg

(An overlook of China, a lot of rebel trouble)

6-5.jpg

(Peace? What peace?)

ScreenSave39.jpg

(I also get to build a new class of BB, woot!)

ScreenSave42.jpg

(Damn it, I'm only building two of the BB while the Germans are building 20 of them at the same time! The production list goes down further)

ScreenSave41.jpg

(Last screenshot, the Boer War begins. Uncle Kruger wants war!)

“Captain Nemo, I’m sorry to interrupt you, but are you busy now?”

“Not at all. In fact I do have something interesting that might interest you, something to do with our new long range torpedoes,” replied Captain Nemo, commander of the Nautilus.

Spain being defeated again? Some things never change... :D

Well, let's see how good old Rommel put himself into that odd adventure...

wow, you're getting much cooler events than me. i never got that oral sex one when i played the 1897 scenario, and the spanish-american war never happened which was very annoying.

Krüger wanting war?
It is amazing how 'neat' british imperialists can be when they attack the only democratic european nation located in africa.
Italy shall get nothing!
Have you thought of conquering Spain and Italy before ww1?

It will not just be odd, but also be filled with insanity. ;) As I mentioned before, Resident Evil 4 played a large part in inspiring me with this AAR, and now Resident Evil 5 is just coming out in a few days. So expect me to incoperate some elements inspired by RE5 in the following chapters.

"Il voulait être César, il ne fut que Pompée" from Clemenceau, old Faure got pump. :p However, in this AAR I probably will let him have a less shameful death then that.

Honesty time: for the Spanish American War, you should get it around 4 out of 5 games according to my experience. However for some events I did try multiple times to get the result I wanted for the sake of making this AAR more interesting.

Nobody's neat in the end, haha. :p

I did think about getting Spain and Italy before the Great War, but Italy is allied to Germany, and it just doesn't makes sense in this AAR story line that nobody will intervene if I invade Spain. So for the time being I shall "spare" them. ;)

Interesting fact for you all to know: the II Reich officially has more IC than Russia and the II Republic combined. Will do an overview of the Great Powers some time later for more detail.

4/5, thats very annoying. especially as i was playing as spain and looking forward to... lets say keeping my colonies. and possibly creating some in miami. and kicking the yanks down off their high horses.

Although the SPW is almost inevitable, I should also note that there are other peace events such as USA only gets a limited victory and gains, and ones that fires if spain successfully invaded continental US with spain ending with some gains from the yanks...:p Check out the events in the db if you are really curious about exactly what events are there.

Well, nobody expects... erm... nobody rised a finger for Spain in 1898...

The SAW was only a limited war of aggression by the US, and only the colonies were involved. If I were to cross the Pyrenees I suppose it is a different story.

Ok, folks, here's some sort of an update:

I've been doing the Alsace Design despite trekaddict telling me I should prioritize the writing. ;) This is the Alsace in 1990s undergoing modernization, and she should appear in my TTL (one day when I got to that point).

The image is 2500 x 500, sorry for those who have a small screen. Nevertheless, here's some notes about the Alsace, while no stats about the Alsace will be posted until I post the Alsace (2000).

Notes:

Undergoing modernizations since the late 1980s, the Alsace was considerably rebuilt and upgraded. However, the modernization process was plagued by various problems including budget cuts and the difficulties of rebuilding the WWII Battleship into a modern naval vassel.
Many designs from the La Fayette and CDG class were also incorporated into the BB, including some stealth techonologies to reduce the radar signature. The whole modernization process is scheduled to be complete just before 2000.

Taking us back to 1900, here is a small teaser. :p

Impressive I must say, but did you compromise the side armour belt for some sort of hangar?

holy christ! britain makes a deal with the devil! (sorry trekaddict :D )

What's wrong with an Alliance with Germany? The old enemy to the south beckons, you know. :D

First take a look at this: Alsace wiki

As you can see, the hangar is included in the original design, indicated by the elevator. Furthermore in my design, I simply enlarged the hangar by beefing up the stern. So I can answer you by saying that in my design the belt amour wasn't compromised.

At first I didn't expect that to happen too.

Still, that hangar invites the random lucky shot, and with all that aviation fuel...

If you look at the stats I sent to you in my e-mail, you can notice that Alsace got an armoured deck of 200 mm (maximium), enough to resist some "lucky shots". Furthermore I think that 4 choppers doesn't have that much aviation fuel to talk about. ;)

Still.. It would still be a nasty fire, hence why I gave Lion only one Chopper.

Well, my decision of letting Alsace carry four is based on the fact that the Iowa class had 3 helicopters in the Cold War period. Three for Iowa, why not four for Alsace? :p Anyways 4 choppers mean a large ASW force to compensate for any possible "risks".

True, but that's why the Lions are always escorted by Trafalgar - Class CVS ( OTL Invincible-Class ) They are to provide light Air Cover and ASW support for the Battlegroup.

Although the Alsace always set sail in a BB Battle Group, she virtually has the potential to act as a small one ship navy with her unmatchable battle strength. :p I'm sure the stats I sent to you showed how powerful I designed the Alsace to be.
