Developer Diary | Historical Denmark

Velkommen til Danmarks historiske Dev Diary! As you might have so astutely observed, today’s Dev Diary is all about Historical Denmark (and if you didn’t catch that, it’s ok; no one understands Danish anyways, so you’re not alone). Denmark has had the great misfortune to be designed by a Swede, namely me - and why would that be such a terrible thing you might ask yourself? Well, let me shed some light on that and give you a bit of context dear reader. Denmark and Sweden have fought the most wars between them than any other countries, so there’s some old blood and rivalry here. Which is thrilling to me; I now have the chance to make them as underpowered as I want - muahahahaha!

Before we go any further, do keep in mind that everything is still a work in progress and might change before releasing in- oooopsie! Spoilers ;) But every bit of feedback and correction is welcome! Do you think I missed something? Do let me know! Did I misspell something in Danish? Don’t even bother - I’ll never get it right anyways ;)

Denmark is famous for surrendering after merely 2 hours when Germany invaded, so this Dev Diary will be similarly short and sweet. Let’s jump straight into it, shall we?
01.png

And there you have it folks, that’s all from-

….

….

So, this is awkward…. I’ve been told that this won’t do and that Denmark needs at least 2 more focuses. I might be able to throw something together. But before we get there we have other things we gotta talk about.

Historical Context
Let’s start with some historical context because it’s crucial to understand Denmark’s situation leading up to the war and why they surrendered so quickly. Denmark’s entire foreign policy was based around their perceived biggest threat, which prior to WW2 was Germany (and thereafter the Soviet). This way of viewing the world was shaped by their disastrous war with Prussia and subsequent defeat by them in 1864. From this date onward they pursued a policy of neutrality and did all it could not to anger Germany, lowering military spending and eventually focusing on what would become the welfare state.

One of the reasons why they kept this strict neutrality and disarmament was because they were unable to obtain security guarantees from the UK or from a Nordic Alliance once the war was looming on the horizon. The UK was in no position to offer any meaningful support to the Danes (and told them so in no uncertain terms) while the rest of the Nordic nations had widely different security concerns and couldn’t unify behind a common policy. The Danes realized that they had no hope to withstand a potential German invasion and didn’t, therefore, bother with military spending except to keep a symbolic force to emphasize their sovereignty.

Map Changes
Before we delve into what changes are coming to Denmark, let’s first look at some maps! My suggestion to simply bundle up all of Denmark into one state and rename it Southern Sweden was sadly downvoted (but just barely!). Instead, Denmark gets a whole bunch of new states (so that any Swedes - and Norwegians too! - can really savor the sweet, sweet sensation of conquering all of Denmark, bit by bit). As you can see, Germany is getting an additional state as well, and the Kiel channel has moved to a more accurate position. In total, Denmark starts out with 7 states now.
02.png

Besides that, the Danish Belts have gotten a makeup too
03.png

At The Game's Start

With that one out of the way, let's take a look at Denmark's starting position in 1936
04.png

The more observant of you might notice that Denmark now starts out as a Disarmed Nation to better reflect their unpreparedness and policy of disarmament. Secondly, you might also have noticed that there’s an upcoming election in April of 1936 - which isn’t at all the usual 4 years cycle other nations have. Denmark actually has this little quirk where an election has to be held within the next 4 years from the last one, meaning an election can be held after 2 years, or 3 years, or whatnot. In-game, this is represented by Denmark holding elections every 3 years (this will be a great opportunity for you to switch the ruling party - but more on that later), but I digress! Other things some of you might have picked up on is that the non-aligned party is now called Bondepartiet and not Venstre. I would say that this is a more accurate reflection of the political landscape in Denmark during the 1930s, but it also fits better with how elections and politics at large has been reworked for Denmark with
Arms Against Tyranny.

What’s also noticeable is that the Danes are starting out with 3 new National Spirits, 2 of them are quite bad and the third one is in bad shape.

Neglected Military is a reflection of the poor state that the Danish military was in when WW2 broke out, but by completing certain focuses you can improve this spirit and remove it entirely.
05.png

The Great Depression hit Denmark slightly later than other places, but it did have a great effect on the country. It led to businesses going bankrupt, farmers foreclosing and skyhigh unemployment. All of this spurred the growth of extremist movements on the political fringes. This is all represented by
Economic Crisis, which the player can use to their advantage if they wanna boost Bondepartiet, for example. But like with Neglected Military, you can improve and even remove this spirit through focuses.
06.png

The last of the 3 starting spirits is Danish Industrial Capabilities, which also can be improved through focuses, but as you can see is in a pretty rough spot at the start of the game. Oh, that
Consumer Goods Factories factor might look quite high, and I know that a few of you are wondering about that. We know this seems high but don't worry it's a new modifier which we will be explaining in a future dev diary.
07.png

Balance of Power

Before we move on to advisors and the actual Focus Tree, we need to check out Denmark’s Balance of Power since it’s going to be affected by all of these things. This is where all of the political decisions will be happening, and all of them will affect the balance between Welfare and Warfare. Now, what exactly does Welfare and Warfare actually do? Good question, and I’m glad you asked! Let’s take a closer look.
08.png

The more you spend on Welfare, the more you’re pouring into developing your country. This is reflected in population growth, faster research, and the construction of
Infrastructure, Civilian Factories, and Railways. On the other hand, this means that you are pulling resources away from military build-up and construction.
09.png

If you go all out on Military Spending civilian construction will suffer, but you’re going to produce military equipment much faster and deploy troops at a quicker pace.
10.png

Advisors
As I mentioned, Advisors will affect the
Balance of Power - so you better think it through properly when hiring someone. What they will do is push the Balance of Power in either direction - largely based on their historical leanings.
11.png

12.png

13.png

14.png

Politics
Like I previously mentioned, Denmark has a 3-year election cycle now, and the perceptive among you might have noticed a
Balance of Power decision called “Motion of No Confidence”. This all plays into how politics works in Denmark for Arms Against Tyranny. You will be able to select between different democratic parties and leaders now, as well as the Non-aligned, Communist, and Fascist parties.

The “Motion of No Confidence” decision allows you to choose a different country leader based on if their political party meets the right criteria.
15.png

Not only can you change your country's leader, but you can also call for a snap election if other political parties have high enough popularity.
16.png

If you called for a snap election you get the opportunity to boost the popularity of a political party and give them a higher chance of forming a new government. This is also what happens during the regular elections.
17.png

The Focus Tree
Sadly, I wasn’t allowed to only make a 2 focuses long tree - even though I argued it was historically accurate! Anyways, without further ado, here it is

18.png

The Industrial Branch
It’s through the Industrial Branch that you can improve and eventually remove the Economic Crisis spirit, but even before starting out on the Industrial Branch, you have to make a decision that will affect the rest of your game. Will you go for Sign the Kanslergadeforlig or Fortify Our Borders?
19.png

Historically, Denmark signed an agreement called the Kanslergadeforlig which was the very beginning of the modern Welfare State they have to this day. This will also unlock Karl Kristian Steincke as an advisor.
20.png

Moving down this path will provide civilian factories and building slots, as well as a National Spirit called “Danish Produce”.
21.png

If you on the other hand are more concerned with how flat Denmark is and how it’s just perfectly suited for, let’s say tanks, then you might wanna fortify the borders and receive the Defense Minister Alsing Andersen as an advisor.
22.png

This path will yield forts and military factories all over Denmark, as well as the spirit “Improved Logistics
23.png

But no matter what your first choice is, there are plenty of focuses the 2 paths have in common! The first one is Devalue the Krone, which leads to being able to trade with both the UK and Germany. This is actually something Denmark did during WW1 and leading up to WW2
24.png

25.png

And with Connect the Islands both paths meet up again and share the same focuses.
26.png

You can also get Niels Bohr as an advisor
27.png

With Expand the Industries you unlock the decision to develop Greenland, the Faroe Islands, and Bornholm.
28.png

29.png

You can also improve an Industrial Concern and/or unlock one.
30.png

31.png

32.png

33.png

But you can also extract more minerals from Greenland
34.png

35.png

The intention with the Industrial Branch is to make it flexible so that you can really focus on your overarching strategy and have the branch complement that vision. And speaking of which, let’s move on to the military side of things!

Military Branch
I gotta be honest with you all here. I could have put most of this part in the alt-history dev diary since Denmark didn’t do most of these things. As I’ve already mentioned, Denmark was fearful of angering their bigger, southern neighbor, so they spent as little money on the military as possible. But playing like that makes for a boring WW2 war game! Wanna play a little game? Guess how far Denmark got in the branch below ;)
36.png

You’ve made a guess? Ready for the answer? They completed Expand Ubådsvåbnet. To be fair, they were also like 90% through the Foreign Designs in the Airforce path. But that’s it! The rest is me piecing together stuff they did after the war and just finding something to do that kinda makes sense for Denmark. Anyways, I’m digressing again…

Do you remember that Neglected Military spirit I mentioned way back when we started this dev diary (feels like ages to me who’s been writing this dev diary for several days now, but for you, it’s been like… what? 5 minutes? 10?)? Yeah, this is where you work to improve it and completely remove it through various focuses, including Stockpile Oil
37.png

But let’s take a closer look at the Army branch. This is where you receive the Hæren spirit and improve it throughout the branch. You will also be able to improve your MIO’s here. It’s mainly defensive in nature, while the more aggressive stats can be found in the political branches.
38.png

The first Focus will see you take your first step in reorganizing the army after almost a century of peace and lack of actual combat experience.
39.png

Then you can choose between investing in your MIO’s, namely Hærens Tekniske Korps, and Dansk Industry Syndikat
40.png

41.png

With Hjemmeværnet you get the decision to activate the Home Guard during wars, but also the Hæren spirit.
42.png

43.png

I could go on about each individual focus here, but it’s mostly about improving Hæren, research bonuses, and increasing funds for the various MIO’s. Let’s instead take a look at what Hæren yields after completing these focuses instead!
44.png

These stats can be improved even further in the political branches - which will add entirely new modifiers as well.

Now, let’s turn our attention to the Naval Branch, where you’ll get the Søværnet spirit. Here you have a few choices to make, depending on where you want to take your navy. You can refit old ships, or modernize the navy. You can try to dominate the Baltic Sea with smaller ships or try to rule the North Sea with carriers and capital ships.
45.png

Going with the Refit Old Ships will improve the Danish Industrial Capabilities spirit and unlock two decisions to get access to ships fast.
46.png

47.png

48.png

49.png

If you on the other hand Modernize The Navy you will get the Søværnet spirit. This will give you two ship variants in production; one for a Coastal Defense Ship and one for a Destroyer. These variants are actually based on designs the Danish navy had but were abandoned due to budget constraints. There are actually different variations of these variants depending on the tech level.
50.png

51.png

52.png

53.png

54.png

Towards the end of the branch, you face the second choice you will have to make; do you aim for Baltic Sea Domination or do you have North Sea Ambitions? The Baltic Sea Domination is the more straightforward of the two;
55.png

Having completed this focus and the Generalkommandoen in the army branch will open up the Frømandskorpset, which might be helpful for naval invasions…
56.png

The North Sea Ambitions is a bit more complicated though, since it’s affected by what choice you made between Refit Old Ships or Modernize the Navy (and I know the tooltip is egregious, but it’s necessary to show off the effects):
57.png

58.png

59.png

And finishing off this focus will also open up the Torpedofly focus in the Airforce Branch;
60.png

Before we leave the Navy Branch and take our first look at how the International Market can interact with the Focus Trees, let’s see what the
Søværnet can look like after completing the Naval branch. After completing the Baltic Sea Domination:
61.png

And after completing North Sea Ambitions;
62.png

Now, let’s fly over to the Airforce Branch - where you’ll have to decide between Domestic Designs or Foreign Designs for your aircraft straightaway.
63.png

What you’ll get by completing Domestic Designs is two aircraft variants which are actually based on historical designs Denmark were working on when they got invaded.
64.png

65.png

66.png

But if you on the other hand opt to go for Foreign Designs you’ll receive something called a Subsidy, which will make you as a buyer pay off your purchase faster. As a seller, you’re receiving the full payment with the only difference that the deliveries will go faster. So it’s kind of a win-win situation. You can read more about the International Market in the this dev diary.
67.png

This specific Subsidy is for airplanes, but others can be for tanks, trucks, infantry equipment or what have you. If you look closely you’ll also realize that this Subsidy is only eligible for airplanes purchased from the Netherlands, The UK, Germany, or Sweden. That’s pretty cool, huh? I know you wanna know more about all of this, and we’ll talk more in-depth about it in an upcoming dev diary, so don’t you worry! Anyways, let’s move on with the Airforce Branch.

The next focus is Unify Flyvevåbnet, where you’ll get the Flyvevåbnet spirit. Denmark used to have two different airforces; the Army’s and the Navy’s, but they were eventually unified in the 50s. You don’t have to wait that long though!
68.png

After that, you improve the Flyvevåbnet even further before choosing how you want to specify your Airforce; do you want to focus on fighters, close air support, or bombers? It’s really up to you and how you want to play the game. After completing the Airforce branch and having done the Jagerfly focus, the Flyvevåbnet spirit would look like this:
69.png

Political Path
Now we’ve come to the Political branch, where we’ll only take a look at a small part of it, and leave the rest for the alt-history dev diary (because this is getting long). The left part of the branch is accessible after completing the Policy of Disarmament, which will see you enhancing your industrial capabilities even more.
70.png

And in the end, you'll be able to complete Full Employment
71.png

But before getting this far you have to first Reaffirm Neutrality as your very first focus in the political branch. Yeah, yeah I’m doing this backward; finishing with the beginning - but there’s good response for that! You see, when you have taken Reaffirm Neutrality you’ll get the Declaration of Neutrality spirit which will give you the option to fight or fold when attacked.
72.png

Historically, Denmark surrendered after two hours of the German invasion (even though fighting took place up to four more hours). The Danes had a very different experience as an occupied country from everyone else that got invaded; they got to keep their government and even had elections during the occupation. And that’s what you’ll get too if becoming a puppet while having the Declaration of Neutrality spirit.
73.png

And to be honest, this is the true historical path. Let me introduce to you the resistance, or as they say in Denmark; velkommen til modstanden!

Occupation
This is what you have to work with as a subject; the Industrial Branch and the Occupation Branch. But don’t think for one moment that you’ll be a good little puppet that will do your master's bidding. No no, this branch is all about gathering foreign support and building up a Resistance so you can topple your overlord! There are also plenty of
International Market Subsidies throughout the branch, to build up your forces even more.
74.png

With Align with Foreign Powers you’ll seek out support that can provide you with weapons and support during the occupation, but once you declare independence you’ll also be able to join their faction - gaining an ally in your war for freedom.
75.png

Historically, Denmark set up an exile force in Sweden. They were training to help in the liberation of Denmark under the guise as “military police”. This is of course something you’ll be able to do as well! Having gained a host for your Danish Brigades, you’ll also get a new division template that you can improve through focuses.
76.png

77.png

To help you resist your overlord you have the Motstandsbevægelsen spirit which you have to improve to stand a chance against Germany.
78.png

Balance of Power Redux
As a subject you’ll also get a different Balance of Power which will be crucial to regaining your freedom. All of these decisions are unlocked through various focuses and will help you in your struggle against your overlord.
79.png

And that’s about it for me this time around. Who knew there was so much to say about such a small country? It’s barely more than a suburb of Sweden, but there are surprisingly many interesting things going on in Denmark during this time period. I hope you enjoyed the (looong) read! And if you don’t want to become a puppet of the Germans - don’t fret! There are ways to resist an invasion, but those will have to wait until another time.

Farvel!

As an American, I'd like to apologize for my countrymen making fun of France so much for surrendering quickly in WW2. Cleary, I should've been making fun of Denmark the whole time. :p

Awesome Dev Diary! Just a few questions/ideas that came into my head reading it.

Will Germany have an option to reintegrate Sonderjylland (South Jutland or North Schleswig) just as they can with Luxembourg and Alsace Lorraine in the Fascist and Monarchist paths of their focus tree?

Will America/Britian/Canada get a decision to occupy Greenland just as America did in the real war?

And finally...Iceland focus tree? ;)

Thanks!

You will need to try harder than that to replace DICE and Battlefield 5 as Peak Swede in "Pooping on other Nordics" Department.

Money is coming back? Oh my God! Okay. It's happening. Everybody stay calm. EVERYBODY STAY CALM!

Seems like a good job. I appreciate having Scavenius af the foreign minister rather than the facist demagoue.

A bit of spelling.
"Det Danske Stålvalseværket" Is a bit wronly worded.

It should either be

Det Danske Stålvalseværk

Or if you want to keep "Stålvalseværket"
it should be named something like

"Stålvalseværket i Danmark"

Also your naming of Denmark is a bit inconsistant, while you have Nørrejylland and Sønderjylland both with "ø" you have chosen to name Sjaelland without the Æ, while i might be a miss of any historical source stating that Sjælland is spelled without Æ at the time of WW2, i don't think this is the case.
Further on "Nørrejylland" while the term indeed mostly refer to the region you've designated, it would more aligned with how it's used to just call it "Jylland" while keeping the "Sønderjylland"

With regard to your focus "Sign the Kanslergadeforlig"
It would be more appropiate to call it "Sign Kanslergadeforliget" Also Kanslergadeforliget was signed in 1933, so pehaps renaming the focus to Continue Kanslergadeforliget, might be more appropiate.

Bondepartiet as representing the non-aligned i a bid odd in my opinion, the party was insignificant, but pehaps your choice might be the best moddeling of it after all.

The straights should argueably be split into two parts.

Historically prior to WW2 the danish straigts was where you blocked fleets off, however, Germany constructed massive guns on both the danish coast of Northern Jutland and on the South Coast of Norway to effectially create a new straight that was blocked off.

Also i really hope you touch on the fact that Germany expected an Allied landing in Denmark, and thus Denmark had a massive share of the atlantic wall build along the coast of Jutland.

Lastly, you should add a port in Esbjerg
The company was called "Det danske Stålvalseværk" (spelt exactly like that). It was set up in 1940 in Frederiksværk, and finally went bust in 2002.
I came here to point out the same thing.
As someone living in Aalborg, and from Vendsyssel, I also find it funny that North Jutland encompasses all of Middle Jutland.

On another note, I agree with other previous commenters that King Christian X should be a national spirit if Denmark is occupied. After all, he went out on his horse pretty much every day, riding through the streets of Copenhagen, and became something of a symbol of unity.

I wonder where is Iceland. I think it will also have a small focus tree. I'm so exited about it! BTW great job so far.
That would actually be really cool. I mean, I'm not sure what you would even do as Iceland since they don't even have a military, but having Iceland do some things on their own would make for nice flavour :) .

::googly eyes::
Fingers crossed!

Also, what happens to Iceland if you surrender? I dislike how it sometimes joins the Axis on its own.
They what now? Never had this happen in any of my playthroughs. Guess they grew tired of being loyal and obedient subjects and wanted to try on their bad pants.

Great news. You keep the next DLC look attractive, but now we have 3 months ahead dying to get it.

I like the BoP. But please, it's like risk of strikes due to "demobilization": we have to see it in main interface, without having to open submenu. Otherwise we can lose track and get in a bad position by surprise. Adding it on top bar seems like a requirement.

Being a Swede, I just loved the danishbashing in the dev diary.

I think it was a sound decision to have more then one region in Denmark - we all want the swedish puppet to have more options for construction.

Thanks for the compliment! There will be options for any Overlord to take a piece of Denmark - or that's the plan at least. We'll see if I have the time to do something special for Germany; vacation is coming

There are actually several things that can happen with Greenland ;)

No, we will not add money :p Are you referring to improving the MIO's? They use that term, but it's not money - sorry to disappoint you :)

Duly noted! I will for sure rename Stålvalseværke, but I did some further digging and found out that Å wasn't introduced until AFTER WW", so it'll be called "Det Danske Staalvalseværk" - for accuracy ;)
I'll probably end up renaming Nørrejylland to simply Jylland. I've taken enough of a beating from you Danes and just have to fold instead of fighting this XD

I am sorry, but this is disappointing, and it shows a poor and simplified picture of Denmark in the 1930s and 1940s. This might be inevitable in HoI4, but some things can be changed to make Denmark better and more accurate. There is no reason why Denmark should just be dunked on and made into a joke, while a neutral country like Sweden is given a serious, and probably slightly overpowered, focus tree. But hey, maybe Sweden could also get a two-part, historically accurate focus tree: first focus could be "Help Nazi Germany", second focus could be "Do nothing else".

There are inaccuracies and missed opportunities here, and I'd like to go through some of them:

First of all, Denmark did not begin a policy of disarmament after 1864. On the contrary, Denmark spent large sums building up a huge defensive perimeter around Copenhagen, and all Danish politics actually revolved around this issue during the last part of the 1800s. King Christian IX even instituted a sort of semi-dictatorship in order to keep Council President Estrup - the firmest proponent of the West Wall around Copenhagen - in power. Denmark had, relative to its size, the strongest armed forces in Scandinavia by the time World War I broke out. On paper the army could mobilise 178,000 men, and the navy was well-stacked with mines, torpedo boats and submarines. This is because Danish policy actually was to deter the British from commencing major raids and operations into the Baltic, thus making a German invasion of Denmark unnecessary. This of course required a very strong military, which I've just mentioned that Denmark had. The Venstre Prime Minister I. C. Christensen had been the chief architect behind this policy, as the previous Estrup government was almost solely focused on countering the threat of what was seen as an inevitable German invasion.

The Danish policy of disarmament and low military spending therefore did in fact not start until 1922, when the Neergaard government decided that the military threat of Germany had disappeared with the country's defeat in World War I. The radical disarmament of Denmark's military, and the beginning of the poor state that it was in when the Germans invaded, did in fact not come about till the Military Budget / Military Law of 1932. So while the Danish military was in a bad stape in 1936, it did in fact have lots of experience to draw from, and it would not have been hard to bring it back to its old strength from before 1932 or 1922. The policy of disarmament was officially abandoned in 1937, when Stauning instituted a new military budget, the aim of which was the slow rearmament of Denmark. Even when the Germans invaded in 1940, the Danish Army did in fact number 94,000 men. But the army hadn't been mobilised, and the commonly mentioned number of 14,500 Danish troops on the 9th of April 1940 was actually just the number of sergeants, professional officers and conscripts undergoing basic training - the real, actual army did not get to fight. The Danish Army was thus much better prepared to face the German onslaught than the Norwegian Army was, despite decades of neglect. The reason for Denmark's quick surrender was the Stauning government, whose foreign policy was run by P. Munch. No Munch, no two hour surrender.

---

Why are the names Sønderjylland and Schleswig both used? It's just the Danish and German words for the same province. The German name could fittingly be Southern Schleswig.

---

Denmark was an agrarian society, but it was more industrialised than both Norway and Finland, and it had major dockyards. Why does Denmark, of all the Nordics, get a malus to its industry? It was the richest country in the North.

This is very wrong and actually the cause of a huge missed opportunity. First of all, just for historical accuracy - no, the King did not nearly cause a civil war 20 years prior. The Easter Crisis has often been overblown. The election following the crisis was a huge victory for the parties that had supported the King's actions. Anyway, I digress: the King was certainly a big political player, and he became the symbol of Danish national unity during the war. Not having him be a national spirit makes absolutely no sense.

The King was a close friend of Stauning, and the King, alongside the King's trusted friend General Erik With, actually tried to influence Stauning to become more pro-military. They succeeded in this, and Stauning's relationship with the severely anti-militaristic party Radikale Venstre grew a bit sour in the middle of the 30s. It was not until 1939 that Stauning gave up on his rearmament plan. Even after this the King continued to play a political role, and his political power sharply increased after the occupation, as he became a hugely popular national icon, and therefore someone that the politicians had to listen to. He demanded the dismissal of Foreign Minister P. Munch, leader of Radikale Venstre, and instead appointed three apolitical ministers - Erik Scavenius as Foreign Minister, Eigil Thune Jakobsen as Minister of Justice and Gunnar Larsen as Minister of Transport. The King's rising power culminated in October of 1940, when a delegation known as the Højgaard Circle approached the King with a proposal: appoint his royal cousin, Prince Axel, as Prime Minister and leader a cabinet composed almost entirely of businessmen and non-politicians. The group was heavily inspired by Maréchal Pétain, and the King seriously considered the matter for some days.

You can read more about it here: https://meile.dk/wp-content/uploads/2022/07/Hoejgaardkredsen1940.pdf (There is an English abstract on page 89).

The Højgaard Circle is rather famous here in Denmark, and it should be the obvious candidate for the non-aligned faction spot. The faction could work like this: The King appoints Prince Axel, and Denmark then has the choice of trying to stay neutral, being pressured into joining the war on Germany's side or openly rebelling against the Germans. The last thing was actual thing that many Danish officers conspired to do, especially one Colonel Helge Bennike, who wanted to mobilise the army and gather it on Sjælland to fight to the last man and redeem the humiliating surrender in 1940. A Prince Axel government, though a political bomb, would have been very popular amongst the revanchist officer corps, and the King - being very anti-German - would probably have taken kindly to such officers and their plans.

With regards to the historical political tree - why is 'Sign the Kanslergadeforlig' a focus? It was signed in 1933 - three years before the start of the game. Christmas Møller was the true leader of the opposition, and he was also without a doubt the most interesting politician in Denmark in this time period. It would make much more sense to construct an explicit pro-Stauning tree and an explicit pro-Christmas Møller tree. The Stauning tree could include slowly rearming the military, like he historically tried to do, and maybe it could also include focuses where the Social Democrats work with Møller's Conservatives, which Møller wanted. Stauning's tree should also focus on his work to give Denmark a new constitution, and the outcome of this project should be rather decisive for the Stauning path. Stauning became rather depressed and tired when the constitutional referendum failed, and it probably played a large part in his fatalism in 1940. A victory for Stauning's constitution in the referendum would likely have meant that Stauning would have resigned in favour of Hans Hedtoft, who was known as an avidly pro-defence politician in the ranks of the Social Democratic Party. Stauning retiring would therefore have led to a very different World War II for Denmark.

Hedtoft might've followed the I. C. Christensen policy from World War I: Satisfy the Germans by keeping the British out. However, the British had plans to push into the Baltic, and such a push might land a Hedtoft-led Denmark in a war with Britain on the side of Germany. This is another missed opportunity in this dev diary: A non-fascist Denmark should also have the potential of joining up with Germany due to this old World War I-era policy, which had in fact been the cornerstone of Danish neutrality prior to P. Munch taking over the foreign ministry in 1929. But one should not forget that Germany was Denmark's archnemesis, and Denmark ending up on its side against our traditional friends in Britain and France might also here lead to the Højgaard Circle approaching the King with a certain proposal. The King certainly wouldn't have taken kindly to Danish soldiers fighting and dying for the cause of Germany against his relatives in Britain.

The Møller-path, however, should be extremely pro-rearmament. Whereas Stauning was slow and cautious with rearmament, it was Christmas Møller's whole raison d'étre. He would have unwaveringly built up the military, no matter the cost, and Christmas breaking with Denmark's policy of neutrality and joining up with the Allies prior or during the war should also be an option. Møller was anti-German, and he would not have fought the British if they had executed Operation Catherine.

Møller would have countered any German invasion of Denmark. On the morning of the 9th of April 1940 he stormed into the Folketing and told the other politicians that they could easily assemble enough soldiers to kick the Germans back into the sea, since not many Germans had been landed. The other politicians disagreed, and when he learnt that the government had surrendered without a real fight he broke down in tears.

Møller should also be able to take charge of the country in some capacity during the occupation, which would mean a violent break with the Germans.

Lastly, a Erik Scavenius path should definitely also be a possibility. His Danish government would follow a strictly pro-German line, though trying to maintain neutrality. This could possibly end with the Allies or the Soviets declaring war on Denmark, however.

Where is The Little General Staff / Den Lille Generalstab? Why is there no Little General Staff mechanic? They were hugely important, and could serve for some interesting paths for the Danish player. As I've said, many members of the Danish officer corps wanted a violent break with the forces of occupation, but they were all subservient to The Little General Staff. The aforementioned Bennike proposed raising a 50,000 strong Danish volunteer army in Sweden in order to liberate Denmark by force of arms. Ebbe Gørtz, the leader of The Little General Staff, believed that the only purpose of the army was to serve as the loyal servants of the politicians. He therefore wanted the DANFORCE to be the military arm of the legitimate Danish government, and a tool with which they could restore order after liberation. Eventually Gørtz's point of view won out, but it could have turned out differently. Why not have a The Little General Staff mechanic, where the pro-liberation war (Bennike) and pro-government (Gørtz) factions battle it out for the power over and the fate of The Royal Danish Army? This would also be very exciting for the player.

In addition to The Little General Staff, Denmark should also have some events / decisions related to the so-called 'military waiting groups', also known as Undergrundshæren / The Underground Army. These were groups of military-trained Danes, loyal to The Little General Staff and led by officers of the Danish Army. The Underground Army was supposed to rise up when the battle for the liberation of Denmark had commenced. The military waiting groups consisted of about 50,000 men.

Denmark seems to have very few political advisors compared to the other Nordic countries. I would suggest adding some more. Candidates could definitely include Ole Bjørn Kraft, Aksel Møller and Halfdan Hendriksen for the Conservatives; Hans Hedtoft, H. C. Hansen and Hartvig Frisch for the Social Democrats; Søren Brorsen and Thomas Mygdal-Madsen for Venstre. Gustav Rasmussen should also be potential advisor, as some in the Højgaard Circle wanted him to serve as Foreign Minister in Erik Scavenius's place. Vilhelm la Cour might also have a place as a non-aligned advisor.

Cay Lembcke was out of the DNSAP by 1933. His wife later forced him to make a 180-degree turn and become opposed to Nazi ideology. C. O. Jørgensen would be a better candidate for the advisorial role that Lembcke currently occupies.

Knud Kristensen didn't become the leader of Venstre until 1941. Oluf Kragh should be the leader of Venstre in 1936.

Erik baron Bille-Brahe was considered for the position of Chief of Army in 1940. He should definitely be an available commander. Kristian Knudtzon was leader of DANFORCE, so he should also be an available commander. Aage Rolsted should probably be a commander as well.

With was an extremely talented officer. I would give him a higher skill level. In fact - why are all Danish commanders skill level 1? Rolsted, Knudtzon, Bille-Brahe, Hammerich, Vedel, etc. were all good and talented officers. Vedel could be given skill level 3.

Sweden gets a plethora of skill 2 and 3 commanders. Why doesn't Denmark? The Danish officers had had far more amble opportunity to gain experience during World War I. The Danish Army made a partial mobilisation of 60,000 men. The Swedish Army only ever mobilised 13,000 men. And furthermore, 30,000 Danes had served in the German Army during World War I, and some of these would go on to became officers in the Danish Army. H. M. Lunding, leader of the Danish intelligence service, was a WW1 veteran.

This might just be because the commanders are WIP, but it does look a lot like a mixture of ignorance and Swedish bias.

The Military Law of 1922 had actually established a Home Guard, the Landstorm. This Landstorm's backbone was the 30,000 Danes from Schleswig who had been conscripted into the German Army in World War I, and who thus had real combat experience. Though, to be fair, what the Landstorm was basically what the Home Guard became after the war. It could be interesting to mention the Landstorm somewhere, though, since it had only been disestablished in 1932.

Furthermore, the Danish Army relied on a lot of volunteer recoil rifle-corps. These were disallowed by the 1937 military law. They were in effect a type of Home Guard, though they were very well trained and often had better equipment than the ordinary army, as they were often made up of well-off middle class people, who could afford to buy good equipment for themselves. Why not also have some focuses / events centered around the volunteer units, where you can decide on whether to dissolve or expand them? Christmas Møller was an avid and active member of Akademisk Skyttekorps. Below you can see him and future Foreign Minister Gustav Rasmussen at the final farewell-parade of the unit:

Denmark had built large fortifications around Copenhagen prior to World War I, and during World War I it had built a strongly-fortified line known as the Tune Line. This line, though not entirely seen as effective by Danish officers, was crucial in convincing the Germans not to attack Denmark in 1917, when the German naval leadership was pushing very hard for such an operation. The Germans feared that this line was still in use in 1940, and almost abandoned their planned occupation of Sjælland because of this. Why not have some focuses related to the re-establishment of the Tune Line? It would go well with Colonel Bennike's planned last stand on Sjælland.

These are just some of the things I noticed, and some comments off the top of my head. This is a bit short and simplified, but I'd be happy to expand a bit on these topics with more nuance, though.

I know that some of these things might be covered in the up-coming ahistorical dev diary, but I think that many of these things are important to mention, so that Denmark can be given some appropriate love - just like Sweden, Norway and Finland will be given. I definitely feel like Denmark is a bit of a quick fix compared to the other countries so far, which is a shame since Denmark was actually in the war - unlike Sweden. And Denmark was a lot more complex than it is shown here. Denmark is a country which could plausible have a pro-Allies democratic path (Møller), a pro-neutrality democratic path (Stauning), a begrudging pro-German democratic path (Hedtoft / Scavenius) and a monarchist path (Højgaard Circle, as well as the possibility of the King taking personal power).
This is literally gonna take my entire workday to read through XD I'd love to respond to this more in-depth, but we'll see if I'll get around to doing so. Anyways, I'm seeing a few interesting this in here! And feedback is always appreciated from my POV, especially if it's correcting some misconception I have that ended up in the game.

Please remember that this is a game, which means that we have to simplify things and that fun comes before accuracy (even though we strive for combining them as much as possible, and history always informs our designs - even the alt-history paths)

And lastly, regarding the Tune Line, dude???

I wonder how the AI will decide whether to resist or fold on the onset of an invasion.
It actually depends on the army's size of the invading country and if it's a "major" country or not. If you try to invade as puny Norway, Denmark will stand their ground! Unless Norway already conquered Sweden :/

Of course, that's completely understandable. I don't expect a fully realistic or fleshed out picture of a small country like Denmark to be shown, but I do think that some nuance could be added that could make a Danish campaign more fun, while avoiding spreading some misconceptions about Danish / Scandinavian history. There are probably also some of the things I've mentioned that you already know of, but which you've decided are too niche to be in the game, and that's completely understandable.

Forgive me, I must've been tired. I should've noticed that. That's pretty cool.

I hope that I haven't come off as rude in my comment, by the way.

Naw, it's cool! I like these kinds of comments (and comments correcting my horrible naming conventions for all things Danish XD), and things like this actually do help us making informed decisions if we're gonna redesign things or not. That's one of the reasons why we have these DD's; so that we can get some input and change things if we feel like it's appropriate. So it's all good!

This looks like a promising focus tree and I look forward to seeing it in action.

One thing I didn't quite understand from the diary or subsequent discussion: I assume Denmark AI on historical will go down the puppet route and then do the occupation focuses, causing problems for Germany. If the player is Germany, might they just not rather avoid this puppet mechanic and invade and cap Denmark, which presumably stops this occupation mechanic altogether?

I'm just not clear on what benefits Germany will get for playing along, other than a headache. Also not sure how this will work with spies and collab govts...

They will get the Butter Front National Spirit and the option to Annex Denmark completely (AND keep the Butter Front)

Now this is great, at least better than Norway's. I'm also guilty for laughing too much at Quisling instead of asking for more concrete stuffs in the historical path there XD (no hard feelings, Carlo)

Got sick recently so i'm sleeping the whole night, and only reading the whole focus tree when it's almost midday here and reached this page only now.

The election system combined with the BoP one is just perfect *chef's kiss, really love to see BoP getting integrated nicely and giving me ideas to better implement it myself in my East Indies mod.

And now the maps has a rather good rework with separation between Mainland Denmark and Bornholm, and judging with your numbering, i can't wait for you devs to show us Iceland despite it would be DLC-locked like the Four Nordics. Hope that it would stayed as either Personal Union (if you have NSB), Supervised State (MtG, no NSB), or Dominion (TfV, no MtG/NSB).

About the military branch, praises for it, and giving armors for carriers is just good too.

The historical political branch is quite nice, with many options to design your industrial NS for your Welfare State in exchange of stalling rearmament. Also it seems that you have purposefully completing a few focus to hid the Hard Alternate History paths there lol.

Hopefully the historical paths so far can be refined further in July, really love the decision to just laid 'em early and have the feedbacks now than later. Can't wait for Icelandic content and also the non-historical paths for all the Nordics.

Sorry, didn't mean to pile on. XD With a bit of regional pride in being from North Jutland, I just find it funny that our region gained a lot of territory.

And you are absolutely correct. It was "Det danske Staalvalseværk". The letter Å/å did exist in Danish for a long time before formally replacing Aa/aa with the spelling reform of 1948, which also saw ks replace x, among many other things.

I've been looking forward to this DLC for years, hoping it would be a thing, and now it is. The Kalmar Union will rise again! I just wonder who will lead it, if not King Christian X. The man was definitely salty about losing territory, what with almost causing a revolution by not respecting the 1920 plebiscite, and sending furious telegrams to Iceland after they declared independence during WWII.
But I digress. I will eagerly await the alt-history Denmark dev diary!
