Chapter 24: Dreams in the Dark
Chapter 24: Dreams in the Dark
Year of Hell, Day 146

Cali D’Kara
People’s Liberation Army
Lagos, Arcadia
Stardate 2256.07.25, 15:47hours

The Battle for the Twin Cities was not over, but there was a lull in the fighting. The nuclear tunnel bomb and subsequent storm of fallout had done significant damage, forcing the Imperial Army to suspend offensive operations. The Resistance took advantage of the break to rest and resupply, but this reprieve would be short-lived. Sporadic skirmishes and gunfights occurred in Lagos, breaking out in neighborhoods and districts where the two opposing forces were separated by mere meters. This low-intensity combat continued for about a week and a half…

And then Monsoon season ended.

The winds changed, blowing nuclear fallout out of enemy territory and into parts of the city still held by the Resistance. Soldiers and civilians began to fall ill, so the Resistance moved underground, quite literally.

Hellfighters, Night Witches, and Minutemen flooded into the tunnel network below Lagos, bringing as many civilians with them as they could. Shelters were set up in wide caverns and the ruins of Vultaum settlements, so deep underground that ionizing radiation could not reach anyone. Florent wanted to focus on treating the sick and wounded. Persefoni wanted to use the escape tunnel to evacuate civilians from the war zone. Moriarty was worried the Imperial forces may attempt to infiltrate the tunnel network.

Time proved Moriarty correct.

Pixal and several mining droids quickly discovered Imperial scouts in the tunnels. Moriarty organized combat teams to defend strategic tunnels, and before too long, the sounds of gunfire and cave-ins could be heard in the tunnels multiple times a day. The Night Witches had to make painful sacrifices, using the escape tunnel to bring in supplies of food and medicine from nearby sympathizers. Without their advanced computers and transmitters, the Night Witches as a whole became combat ineffective.

Yet somehow, a quarter of a million civilians plus ten thousand soldiers somehow managed to live and survive in the shattered wreckage of a Vultaum city while the land above was irradiated.

Like the other soldiers and many civilians, Cali and Moka were suffering from a mild case of radiation sickness. The two women were constantly nauseous and unable to keep food down for a couple of days. Their muscles ached and headaches were suddenly a constant annoyance. The symptoms had started to appear almost a full day after the nuclear tunnel bomb, which Cali said was a good thing:

“You can measure how big a dose of radiation you got by how long it takes to get sick.” Cali had explained to Moka. “It took about a day for us to feel bad, that means we got a small dose. We are gonna be miserable for quite a while, but as long as we don’t get irradiated again, we’ll live. But… when the war’s over… you really should get screened for cancers as quick as you can. Also, try to avoid getting pregnant until you get a full genetic checkup.”

Iridar and the Scyldari Special Forces team ducked into the escape tunnel and returned a few hours later with medicine designed specifically for radiation sickness. Persefoni, Moriarty, and Florent got into an argument about how to distribute the radiation treatments. Ultimately, a triage was set up, with badly irradiated civilians and soldiers being given priority over everyone else.

Moka’s sleep cycle was completely destroyed, and she graduated from having nightmares to vivid night terrors. She would awake randomly in a cold sweat, hyperventilating. Moka was becoming jumpy, quick to react when the echo of gunfire came down the tunnels. For some reason Cali did not understand, Moka had a full-scale panic attack when she spotted a Scyldari soldier wearing an enviro-suit. Thankfully, these moments seemed to be very rare.

Cali, meanwhile, spent some of her downtime at an improvised rifle range in one of the former Vultaum settlements.

Cali’s ocular implants were damaged by the nuclear blast, and she needed time to adjust. Normally, she would visit a nanotech specialist on Alaria to get her implants repaired, but this was not a normal situation. Cali would have to live with the damaged implants for a long time, possibly for the rest of the war. Cali shot a few targets and watched the HUD flicker in her eyes. She swore. Her days as a rifle marksman were over.

She tossed her rifle aside and sat down in the dirt. Cali was alone in the far corner of a village-sized cave. She could hear the distant rumble of voices and machinery, along with a single deep boom of a mine being detonated miles away.

I can hear all that.

Cali stopped sulking and sat up, focusing her mind inward.

If I can’t see like I used to… Cali said to herself.

Cali closed her eyes and started using her brain implant to give orders to the many thousands of nanomachines in her bloodstream. She redirected all of them to the cybernetic implants in her ears…

Going up the auditory tube, almost there… Cali thought to herself. Where is it, where is the damned… got it!

In moments, Cali’s nanobots reached her cochlear nerves and the cybernetic devices attached to them. Using the events of the past few months as vital experience, Cali guided her nanobots in a hasty upgrade to her auditory implants. Cautiously testing her upgraded ear implants, Cali walked around the cavern, paying attention to sounds, voices, and noises.

Looking around, Cali spotted a group of Minutemen and Night Witches gathered around a wrecked structure that used to be a Vultaum building. Moka was there as well. She was leaning against a very large Morbuzakh plant. The flytrap was so big it could have swallowed her whole. Moka was talking to the Morbuzakh while all of the gathered soldiers were leaning in to listen.

This group of people was over two hundred meters away, there was no way Cali could hear what they were seeing… if she had normal organic ears, that is.

Cali directed her newly enhanced ears to focus on the distant conversation, filtering out and disregarding nonessential junk noise. Despite being almost a quarter of a kilometer away, Cali could hear everything the Morbuzakh was saying:

“Any friend of Moka J’Bassim is a friend of ours.” The Morbuzakh spoke, its flytrap creaking. “We share news from the rest of the galaxy with her, and she has asked us to do the same for you. We will oblige.”

“How can you do that?” Asked a Scyldari soldier. “How do you know what’s happening off-world?”

“The Morbuzakh plants are all connected to each other through the Tree of Life!” Moka said excitedly.

The sentient plant raised a frond for silence.

“We will begin with the local area and expand from there.” The Morbuzakh began. “The biggest news story in the galaxy is, for the third week in a row, the nuclear attack we carried out in East Lagos. The Galactic Imperium has publicly declared their own casualties to number about three thousand. The INTO Parliament, however, says the enemy suffered about fifty-thousand casualties because of our nuclear tunnel bomb. The Imperium is sending reinforcements to Arcadia. Unfortunately, after three weeks, we still do not know whether Skrand Sharpbeak was killed by our attack. Most of what we have seen suggests he is still alive.”

Cali heard someone let out a low whistle. The Morbuzakh carried on.

“Meanwhile, the Imperial Army has been forced to withdraw from the Alari Homeworld. Another Imperial force was encircled and destroyed at INTO Headquarters. The Kel-Azaan have launched a major counteroffensive, there is fighting on the Blorg Homeworld. Further afield, there is trouble on the Imperial Throneworld. Imperial officials had some kind of disagreement with the Human ambassador and now neither side is talking to each other.”

“So much for diplomacy.” Grumbled Moka.

“Diplomacy is not failed just yet.” The Morbuzakh said. “The Alari government has recruited a renowned diplomat as part of an attempt to negotiate peace with the Imperium. Vas the Gilded was trained by the Alyssum Magnetar Sisterhood, many leaders within INTO are placing their faith in her. Vas and her delegation arrived on Kel-Azak two weeks ago. She is been having high-level meetings with INTO Parliament in preparation for her diplomatic mission to the Throneworld. Make no mistake, INTO leaders are open to the possibility that this war may end with a negotiated settlement. We must be prepared for this eventuality.”

“Any news from home?” Moka asked. “Did you hear anything from my hometown, Varnala?”

“The Alari capitol is safe.” The Morbuzakh said. “Our saplings grow in the city and aided in the battle. We see your city through those shoots and vines… yes…”

Even Cali leaned in, hoping the Morbuzakh had seen something worthwhile on Alaria.

“The Imperial Army did not breach the city. The foe was turned back.” The Morbuzakh said. “We see other developments… Your sibling is in Varnala. Dak J’Bassim is continuing to gather a task force. He seeks both an armada and an army to strike Arcadia.”

“I knew Dak would come back for us!” Moka cheered triumphantly. Several Resistance fighters did the same. The Morbuzakh continued:

“We see one other development… is your comrade Pol T’Talok still alive?”

“He’s out on patrol.” Said Estefania. “I think he’s in one of the north tunnels right now.”

“He is wanted in Varnala.” Said the Morbuzakh.

“Well duh.” Moka replied. “Commissar B’Than told us about how his family was waiting for him before all of this fighting happened.”

“You misunderstand.” The Morbuzakh replied. “The City Gendarmerie has issued a warrant for Pol’s arrest. They seek to interrogate him as part of an ongoing investigation.”

Cali felt her heart drop like a stone. She stopped paying attention to the distant conversation as the full weight of the news hit her. The Gendarmes wanted pol T’Talok, a soldier she had trusted as a member of ISAF. Could he be a criminal? Was he connected to one? Could he have done something to Moka when Cali had her back turned?

The dark thoughts entered Cali’s mind without resistance. She set off at a brisk walk, heading for the north tunnels. Cali was determined to confront Pol, her mind full of fear and worry.

When Cali departed the Vultaum city ruins and entered the Hellfighter’s tunnel network, she stepped into a labyrinth of death. The anti-Imperial resistance booby-trapped many of the tunnels once the enemy gained access to the network. Carefully navigating around pitfalls, spike traps, and tripwire mines, Cali searched for Pol quietly, unwilling to raise her voice and give away her position to the enemy.

Cali reached a fork and the tunnel branched off in two directions. A small electric light hung from the wall and she grabbed it.

Cali blinked, trying to sweep away the sense of Déjà vu.

Cali reached a fork and the tunnel branched off in two directions. A small Lightstone crystal hung from the wall and she grabbed it.

As soon as she grabbed the Lightstone, Cali’s newly enhanced ears picked up a distant voice.

“Deviation detected.” Said a friendly and disarming voice.

“I know, I felt it that time.” A second voice replied.

Cali froze. She recognized both voices. Holding perfectly still, Cali allowed her new super-ears to do the work. Cali quickly found out that Hua Mulan and the android Pixal were alone in the north tunnel, about twelve-hundred meters away from Cali’s position.

Pixal and Mulan were clearly trying to have a private conversation, unaware of the eavesdropper more than a kilometer away.

“The Deviations are becoming more frequent. They are also becoming stronger and more acute.” Said Pixal. “Look here at the wall. The electric lights have been replaced with Psioluminescent stones. Their composition does not match anything that occurs naturally on this planet.”

Mulan swore.

“Doctor Jamshidi is here.” Mulan said. “The Scyldari brought him from Singapore Island. He’s gotta be working this.”

“He is unable to resume his studies without access to the device.” Pixal replied. “He is collaborating with the Scyldari to find it.”

“Assuming I don’t find it first.” Mulan grumbled.

“I have advised against this course of action before, and I must do so again.” Pixal said. “You survived physical contact with an unknown alien object by a series of mathematically improbable events. Is that not a sufficient experience?”

“No, it isn’t.” Mulan said. “I know what I saw when I touched that thing… it’s not something you would understand. It was like I was so close to spiritual enlightenment, or something like that. I need to see this through, to see the rest of… whatever that was. Now are you going to help me or not?”

“I still consider myself your friend. I will help you.” Pixal answered. “But I will take measures to ensure you remain unharmed. I will construct handheld scanner that you may use to aid in your search.”

“Thanks.” Mulan said. “How long will it take you to build it?”

“I have generated schematics based on the scanners used by our new Scyldari allies.” Pixal replied. “This project will require two-hundred-eighty-five hours to complete.”

“Oh.” Mulan groaned.

“I will have it ready before dinner.” Pixal concluded.

“But what about-” Mulan started to say…

Cali never found out what Mulan wanted to ask. At that moment, a serious downside to Cali’s new enhanced ears revealed itself:

“HEY D’KARA! WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE!?”

Pol T’Talok was standing so closeby that his voice assaulted Cali’s ears like a bomb blast, regardless of the fact that he was speaking in a calm and level voice. Pol’s casual greeting blew Cali off her feet and deafened her.

Stunned, Cali crumpled to the tunnel floor, pressing her hands to her head in agony.

Cali needs a really good excuse, or a very useful asset just got revealed before she realised how useful it is.

The Morbuzakh want Cali to discover what's going on behind the scenes, yet for whatever reason something stops them doing it the easy way of telling Moka to tell Cali. Which means there's an interaction they want her to do that requires a "natural" discovery of what is going on, while still allowing those around Cali plausible deniability for not knowing about; so, her investigations can be done under the radar. One curiosity is if some of the thoughts she has are being italicised for emphasis, or if that represents Morbuzakh planting thoughts and ideas.

I imagine for the next few weeks, all of Cali's conversations started with the words "Shh! You're being too loud!"

Was Cali's implants medically necessary or an elective surgery?
They were an elective she opted into. During her youth, Cali was interested in staying on the bleeding edge of technology. If the Manifesti Revolution and Arcadia Flashpoint events did not happen, she probably would have gone down the path of Cybernetic Ascension and become a full-blown cyborg.

I wonder in modern athletics where the line will be drawn.
I've got to imagine that Cali's optical implants would get her banned from professional akilini. (An Alari disc throwing sport)

Using a nuke tactically seems to have had... unintended side effects.

What is this thing that Pixal and Mulan are looking for? Other than the source of the deja vu.

At least the war effort is going well for INTO.

I got the idea from a Biological weapon attack Japan launched against China during World War 2. The wind changed at the last moment, causing the Japanese army to accidentally infect itself.

A similar incident happened during a US Army training event on November 23, 2022. The 4th ID accidentally gassed itself during an obstacle course. (Someone thought it was a good idea to mark the edge of the course with tear gas canisters)

What is this thing that Pixal and Mulan are looking for? Other than the source of the deja vu.
Without spoiling the Dark Ending, this thing is a highly dangerous object. Mulan is not the only person searching for it, and Pixal is right when she says Mulan needs to steer clear of it.

Hint: It's one of the relics added to Stellaris by the Ancient Relics DLC.

At least the war effort is going well for INTO.
The alliance is punching back with real vigor. Now if only someone would give Dak some ships and soldiers to retake Arcadia...

In principle she could set some nanites to monitor incoming volume and have them effectively mute hearing to protect her.

The logical way to handle it is to have two sets of records with one being for augments and one for natural people, with get getting caught with augmentation in the latter meaning you are banned for life.

Yeah, if my hard of hearing friends are able to turn off their hearing aids to help with distraction, no doubt Cali can figure out how to adjust the gain on her impromptu cochlear implant.

Also, a nit since I can't help myself from running the numbers. 2000 GJ would be a fairly small nuke. Roughly 24 Davy Crocketts or 1/30th of a Little Boy. I'm rather unclear on how big of one you'd need to destroy a base from 50m underground, but I'm guessing it's something well into the strategic rather than tactical range.

Fairly interesting analysis here:

Based on this pdf, and the context of a fifty metre deep detonation, the explosion would breach the surface; plugging the numbers into the formula on page 36 gives 300×((2×10^12)÷(4.2×10^12))^(1÷3) = 234 feet. Which, because I figured it was 234 foot diameter and not a 234 foot radius earlier, before reviewing again and realising that the model innherently calculates an expected radius, actually is enough to breach.

Easy solution is to edit to the 2000GJ to 2000TJ, because that definitely would send the base sky high.

Edited three times for corrections and calculations. I am not having a good day...

I freakin' love that you did the math!

I was shooting for an explosive roughly half the size of the old W54 in its Special Atomic Demolition Munition configuration. (I imagine Scyldari to be slightly smaller than Humans, and one of Iridar's guys needed to be able to lug this thing around on his back.

That solution is so shockingly easy that by the time you see this post, it will already be implemented. In fact, I STRONGLY RECOMMEND you go back to Chapter 23 and re-read the passage where Vir explains the MPNORD. Something happened. ;)

Well, the good news is that one of my other games ("Children Of A Dead Earth") does actually allow you to design nuclear weapons.

I'm still tweaking settings, and it is technically possible to make a man-portable Plutonium warhead of 2 PJ.

If you don't mind carrying around 95.5kg of bomb. And that bomb consists of 80kg of Plutonium-239 at 97% enrichment, with a Deuterium-Tritium fusion boost of density 60kg/m^3.

You wouldn't want to carry it for very long.

Chapter 25: Through Mud and Blood
Chapter 25: Through Mud and Blood
Year of Hell, Day 151

Moka J’Bassim
People’s Liberation Army
Lagos, Arcadia
Stardate 2256.07.30, 15:47hours

Moka, Mulmangcho, Chen, and Guanyu took up positions in a narrow tunnel. They were about two hundred meters below the twin cities, in the ruins of an underground city built by the Vultaum millions of years ago. Hatchet squad had barricaded the tunnel as best they could, and were now taking cover behind sandbags.

A voice came through the subterranean roadblock to address the insurgents:

“You behind the barricade! Hear us now! The people of Lagos have had enough! You have no chance! Don’t throw your lives away! Surrender now and you will be spared!”

Moka pointed her magnetic rifle at the barricade.

“Fire at will!” She screamed.

Hatchet squad lit up the barricade with every weapon they had. The Imperials returned fire, shooting through the barricade at the rebels. The sound of gunfire in the cramped tunnel was intense, deafening everyone. The enemy was close, only a few meters away. Moka had to scream to make herself heard:

“FALL BACK AND BLOW THE CHARGE!”

Hatchet squad broke cover and retreated deeper into the tunnels. As they fled, Guanyu tossed a hand grenade behind her. The blast thundered through the cavern and rattled Moka’s bones.

Moka stumbled along through the tunnels. She was not as strong as she was before the battle, having been weakened by a bout of radiation sickness. Reaching the next barricade, Hatchet squad took shelter before getting ready to fight again. This fighting retreat continued for hours. The enemy took tunnels in slow, methodical fashion. Fighting in groups of five or six, Resistance fighters contested every centimeter of ground while civilians were shepherded into the escape tunnel.

It would take weeks to evacuate a quarter of a million people, and the situation was about to take a nightmarish turn for the worse…

Year of Hell, Day 158

Moka and her team were called to the escape tunnel. Its mouth was located in a rocky cavern that had once been a Vultaum village. When she got there, Moka found a group of people travelling the wrong way through the tunnel. Instead of fleeing to the nearby town of Sunjiwan, a group of Scyldari fighters was entering the tunnel network from Sunjiwan, transporting a number of heavy crates with them. Persefoni was there to meet them, along with a few other Night Witches.

“There you are!” Persefoni said once Moka approached. “J’Bassim, I need you and your team to take one of these boxes up to Cali D’Kara. She’s on the surface with a recon team.”

“Who are these guys?” Moka said, gesturing at the Scyldari.

“Sergeant Suldirm den Piriam, Scyldari Confederate Army.” A grey-haired Scyldari introduced himself. “I’m with the Special Forces, just not part of the team you’ve been working with. My team has a different mission.”

Piriam shook Moka’s hand.

“I’m not important, but this package needs to get to your recon team on the surface as soon as possible.” Piriam said. “We intercepted a transmission about the enemy’s next attack and we need to get in front of it.”

“What’s in the box?” Mulmangcho asked. “You’re a strange soldier from a strange planet. I’m not up for trusting you just yet.”

Piriam produced a knife and cut the canvas straps holding the box closed. He opened a flap to reveal the contents: Gas masks, rubber gloves, and disinfectant pads.

“The Imperium knows your force has concentrated in the tunnels.” Piriam said. “They are bringing up chemical weapons to flush you out. You’ll need these for protection.

Moka and Hatchet squad returned to the surface for the first time since the nuclear tunnel bomb and found an incredible sight waiting for them. Lagos, once a city of over a million people, was silent and dark. The city had been without electricity for over a month, was overrun by Morbuzakh vines, and pockmarked with craters. Every member of Hatchet squad was issued a Geiger counter before leaving the tunnel network.

“A few parts of the city got a dusting of nuclear fallout.” Persefoni explained. “Especially over by the river. Try to stay clear.”

The last thing Persefoni said was the location of Cali’s team. Mulmangcho actually carried the package while Moka, Guanyu, and Chen cleared the way for him.

During the ten minute walk, Hatchet squad encountered only one enemy group: a squad of Necrophages. These aliens belonged to a species type called “Necroids” and possessed strange enigmatic technology that allowed them to reanimate corpses and guide them like puppets. A contaminated battlefield like this was just the sort of environment Necrophages thrived in. Guanyu and Chen engaged the enemy in a brief gunfight while Moka found a detour for Mulmangcho to take.

Finally, Moka’s team found Cali’s team.

A small team of Night Witches had ascended to the top floor of a residential condo building, nearly twenty-five stories up. Cali, Hinata, Mulan, and Kyra were looking over the embattled city with binoculars and telescopes. To Moka’s surprise, Pol was up here as well. He was sitting away from the group, having a conversation with Mulan.

“Delivery!” Moka panted as she reached the top of the stairs. “Chem protection for you guys!”

Kyra looked into the box and gave Moka a sour look.

“Uh, no. We ordered feminine hygiene products. Go back downstairs and get the right box.” Kyra said.

Moka felt her heart starting to sink. Kyra stared into her eyes for a moment before bursting out into laughter.

“Worth it!” Kyra roared. “The look on your face! Holy shit that was great! Put the box down and tell your team to take a rest. Drink water, too.”

Moka stumbled into one of the loft apartments (the doors were all knocked down or blown open) and collapsed onto a bed. Her three companions did the same. Moka was vaguely aware of the conversation being held in the next room. But as she listened, she suddenly became interested.

One by one, the soldiers of Hatchet squad stood up and moved into the next room, eager to listen into the conversation playing out:

Cali, Hinata, Mulan, and Kyra seemed to be interrogating Pol in a non-confrontational manner. A single Morbuzakh vine was here as well, wrapped around a window. Its flytrap was jammed shut, and Moka could see the outline of a bird trapped inside. Pol was sitting on the floor between the Night Witches, looking down in shame while Cali spoke to him.

“Pol, I’m not going to sugarcoat this. The Morbuzakh has seen the reports from the Alari Gendarmerie. We already know their side of the story. You need to tell us your side, because at the moment, we can’t trust you… and if we can’t trust you…”

Cali trailed off and Kyra finished for her:

“If we can’t trust you, we have to treat you like a suspected spy. We shoot spies.”

Pol sighed and looked around, spotting Moka and Hatchet squad.

“I can’t go home.” Pol muttered. “I can never go home.”

“Speak up, T’Talok.” Hinata said. “Only the truth can save you now.”

“I committed a crime.” Pol said, burying his head in his hands. “A horrible crime.”

“We figured that.” Kyra said. “I can see it in your eyes… you’ve got the look of someone who took a life. Outside of war, I mean. Murderers have a look; trust me.”

Moka put her hand to her mouth. She heard Mulmangcho gasp.

“Pol…” Moka breathed. “Did you kill someone? Are you a murderer?”

Pol hesitated, before nodding his head the smallest amount.

“I killed a family.” Pol whispered.

Moka dropped her rifle.

“WHAT!?” Everyone gasped.

“I have a sister.” Pol said, looking at the floor. “Buri. She’s the best part of my life, I loved her more than life itself… and then…”

Pol froze. He choked up. When Pol failed to speak, the Morbuzakh took over:

“We have spoken to the Varnala Gendarmes. According to law enforcement records, Buri T’Talok was abducted by an individual named Lok B’Korab. She was held against her will for nine days and assaulted repeatedly before being rescued by Gendarmes. The Gendarmes detained Lok, but he was able to post bail. Lok was released from jail to await his eventual trial.”

“They let him go.” Pol seethed. “The Gendarmes let him go… just like that. I couldn’t… I just couldn’t stand by.”

“You were a vigilante.” Mulan said. “You went after him, didn’t you?”

“I did.” Pol confessed. “I chartered a ship to the Hazbuzi Syndicate. Bought a bomb from one of the crime lords. Had a plan: I knew where Lok lived; I knew what his car looked like… Lok would leave his house to go somewhere, he’d get in his car… then it would explode. That was the plan. But… but…”

Pol sniffed.

“Lok drove a 2249 Blorgata Fusion.” Pol whispered. “So did one of his neighbors.”

There was a dark pause.

“Jesus Christ.” Kyra breathed. “You blew up the wrong car.”

“Cal D’Dhenn, his wife Kina… and their kids. Vul, Tir, and Notu. Tir was four years old. I killed them all.”

Pol slumped forward and began to cry. The Morbuzakh regarded him with a curious expression.

“The events he described played out four years ago.” The Morbuzakh said. “The Gendarmes only connected Pol to the crime recently.”

“I don’t know why it took the Gendarmes so long.” Pol said. “I was happy the war started. I thought I might find a different kind of justice while I was out here… but it hasn’t happened yet.”

“Different kind of justice?” Moka repeated. “Were you looking for death out here?”

“I don’t know, maybe.” Pol mumbled.

There was silence. Nobody could think of anything to say for a few moments. Cali clasped her hands. Moka looked up and saw that her aunt’s eyes looked different, as though her irises were cracked.

“Okay, Pol.” Cali began, “Obviously, we can’t extradite you to Alaria because of everything that’s going on.”

“What should we do with him?” Kyra asked. “Honestly, I wanna shoot him.”

“Me too.” Hinata chimed in.

Kyra raised a hand.

“However,” She said loudly. “Pol is an Alari. Since you’re the ranking Alari, Cali… you make the call.”

Cali stood up, looking down at Pol.

“We should just throw him off the side of the building.” Cali said.

Cali took a menacing step towards Pol. He backed off, unknowingly placing himself near a broken window. A storm of emotions, building up inside of Moka’s body for the past few minutes, suddenly erupted.

“No!” Moka gasped.

Everyone looked at her. Cali locked eyes with Moka and shot her an expression filled with very dark intentions. Moka quailed.

Moka was unable to voice her feelings aloud, her mind was still foggy from radiation sickness, but she felt great fear and sadness.

“He’s… but… Pol is…” Moka mumbled, unable to put her thoughts into words.

Cali’s expression softened.

“Okay.” Cali said. “Okay.”

Then Cali looked down at Pol.

“Here’s the deal.” She said. “If, by some miracle, INTO gets back to Arcadia… I’m going to tell the first officer I see that you are missing in action and presumed KIA. You can decide what happens to yourself after that. That is all I’ll do for you. You’re on your own after that, Pol. If I were you, I’d think long and hard about whether or not you’re really looking for death, because nobody here is going to protect you. Understand?”

“Yes, ma’am.” Pol’s voice cracked.

The Imperium is using chemical weapons now. How much more can things escalate?

Also, I feel sorry for Pol. Did Lok ever get killed or sentenced?

I wonder what he will do now...

Also, Kyra is such a troll at the beginning of this chapter.

Well, we've now checked two out of four letters in CBRN, but Stellaris leaves the door open to so many other weapons of mass destruction. Matter Disintegrators, Null Void Beams, weaponized nanites, swarm strikers, Armageddon bombardment, undead armies, Psionic armies, nanite armies, and Xenomorph armies are all still on the table.

Pol lost track of Lok after running away from Alaria. He enlisted in the Alari Armed Forces to ensure he never had to return home. Naturally, he lost track of Lok in the interim. Lok is most likely still out there, probably facing the slow-moving mechanism of the Alari justice system.

Yes. I've known plenty of soldiers who take the lower enlisted for a ride like this.

Should have offered Pol immunity to prosecution in exchange for seeing out the war; making him have no long term options among his own side is practically telling him to go turncoat for anyone who won't extradite him.
