The Hohenzollern Empire 5: Holy Phoenix - An Empire of Jerusalem Megacampaign in New World Order

A part of me is conflicted about that. On one hand if you just do gameplay updates it might be able to be updated faster instead of the multiple month gap between them. However like I have said before I have come to like the story updates as well because of both the characters and that it gives you something to read while you what for the gameplay updates.
I do have a reason in mind for if this happens, namely that as I currently have it planned out, there won't be that much material left over to build a whole arc after this one concludes. The stuff I have is also better suited for a high level overview in gameplay chapters, leaving little in the way of character moments. The timeskip would also work well for a couple plot elements I have planned. But don't worry. It's not going to be that big of a skip. This is all still in the planning stage by the way. Haven't committed to anything yet.
Mabey you could do what you did in EU4 with chapters like Chapter 62: The Girl Who Heard Angels or in HOI3 The Visitor, Part 1-28 in were they were not story updates like the ones in NWO such as The Search and The Regency but they still gave a human element to the story?
I'd rather not assign numbers to story chapters again, to avoid confusion. I've already planned out what each chapter will cover up to Chapter 500, which will be the last NWO chapter. All of them will have to be gameplay chapters, but I could add in a few quick story interludes at the beginning or end like how I covered Alex being at Otto's funeral or Elias' first appearance.

A more likely scenario than the one above is to have 1-3 one offs for certain characters to bridge the gap to the next arc and space out the numbered chapters. That way it wouldn't be a full timeskip, and we'd still get story content. I don't know. I'll figure something out after this arc is done.
You could do it during the battle with Elias in were it looks like Wilhelmina might die but she looks back on various moment's and the one between Olga and Gunduz is part of that and it gives her the energy to keep going?
I would rather have it as a proper flashback though.
That fine. I do wonder how you are going to reintroduce the supernatural elements again since going from supernatural, non-supernatural and back to supernatural could be a bit jarring.
Haven't thought too much about it yet, but I've got a few ideas.
Also a mistake. I meant to say 1920 not 1902.
No worries. Was a little confused at first but I got what you meant.
For sure, through it's a little weird for me seeing a German name in a Japanese setting. Also, I forgot to mention this earlier, but for P5R I combined Joker's Manga name (Akira Kurusu) and his anime name (Ren Amamiya) into Akiren Kuramiya cause I thought that sounded cool.:p
Fox Mulder is more of an American name than German, since the character is American. I was going with an American naming theme for my team in that game since Unova’s based on New York. As for Angela, XY’s Kalos is based on France so I thought it was close enough.
For me I agree with CaptainAlvious in that most of my RPG experiences have been from games like Mass Effect and the Witcher with me never getting into JRPG's that much. But a part of me is really interested in media that don't portray the typical Medieval Europe in fantasy or Space America in Sci-Fi anymore. Some of the recent examples being movies like Dune which is more Islamic/Arabic influences and games like Black Myth: Wukong a Chinese indie game based on the book Journey to the West. However since the only language that I know is English that limits me on the type of pop culture I can consume.
Growing up, I actually wasn't that invested in fantasy outside of ATLA. I was more of a sci-fi person. I still am primarily a sci-fi person, but I've branched out into more fantasy stuff. Nowadays Fire Emblem and Xenoblade are some of my favorite pieces of media.
I agree, as an Elder Scrolls fan who's first game was Skyrim, I do prefer Morrowind's more alien Middle Eastern inspired setting over Oblivion's traditional fantasy depiction of Cyrodil or Skyrim's Nordic setting. It's good to see Fantasy or Sci-Fi stories that do something original and unique as opposed to emulating Tolkien or Star Trek.
In the way of unique sci-fi, I've been following u/low_orbit_sheep's Starmoth project on r/worldbuilding, which has a very unique futuristic Earth where modern capitalism and industrial society have died out, the world is largely organized into socialist communes, and the centers of civilization are in Africa and the Middle East.

Agreed, I do love good fantasy/sci-fi which tries to stand out. It's one of the reason I like ATLA, Xenoblade, and Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood (still in the middle of that) as well as The Expanse, Battlestar Galactica, and Stargate, though I still like the usual Star Trek and Star Wars.
Fortune favors the bold, and that right there is a very bold plan, alas, I fear the plan is gonna go awry as soon as it occurs, you know the old saying after all, Men plan, God laughs, hopefully the laughter is on Jerusalem's expense.
Murphy's Law is no joke.

Glad you're liking FMAB so far, it's a great anime. I will say tho I'm a bit miffed Netflix seems to have removed both FMA animes in the US and kept those terrible live action adaptions. Oh well, at least they have Arcane, Cyberpunk Edgerunners and Cowboy Bebop (I should get around to finishing that last anime). Also, I'm curious if you've watched the 2003 anime as well, as FMAB does somewhat condense some things and goes by some stuff in its early episodes much faster than the 2003 version before getting to the part of the Manga story that 2003 didn't adapt due to it not being finished at the time?

Speaking of Cyberpunk, I wonder @GhostRider124, are you still planning those Cyberpunk updates after your Kaisereich-Tianxia interludes, as I remember you saying you’d post them in the 2060/70s
Haven't thought too much about it yet, but I've got a few ideas.
Fair enough. I’m curious to see what you have planned for Wilhelm's arc in the CK2 rework or Stellaris, or other angels like Gabriel if you decide to bring him back, as I feel like Gabriel could work as a Q type character who doesn't think humans are capable of standing up to the Worm.

Yeah, I was a little confused when all I found on Netflix were live action adaptations I wasn't interested in. Ended up going elsewhere for FMAB.

I haven't watched the other FMA anime, as my friends recommended I stick to Brotherhood.

I'm also planning on bringing back Wilhelm at some point in the rest of NWO, as there's some things about him I'd like to address in the modern day. I could use that as a good way to tie in with the CK2 rewrite, perhaps as a framing story of Wilhelm telling someone about what he did in the past like how I recanonized the alternate 1453 scenario.

Yes. I still plan on doing them after Tianxia. I just wanted to do those closer to 2077 and due to Cyberpunk Red taking place in the 2040's that would be a prefect time to start them. I wont be stopping at the 2040's in terms of lore I will include the lore from 2077 as well.

Also I mentioned it yesterday but I do not think you saw it. But I said happy birthday.

By the way, I was doing research for Chapter 467 also known as spending hours scouring Chinese mythology pages on Wikipedia for cool ship names, you probably know what I'm trying to write, and I came across this page on the Jurchen script used by the 12th century Jin Dynasty. I remembered our discussion about the writing systems of Fusang and other Eimerican countries and realized the Tawantinsuyuans and other natives could've used variants on the Jurchen script, as the Jin court had experience coming up with new writing systems for non-Chinese languages and regularly used one of its own. There'd also be influences from the basic Chinese script since the Jin likely used both systems when they were still in China, and linguistic standardization after 1868 probably resulted in it falling out of use in favor of basic Chinese.

So going off of that previous discussions and this one. Mainland China uses Mandarin which is a mix of different northern dialects. Penglai Chinese is like Mandarin but uses southern Yue languages like Cantonese along with Classical/pre-Mandarin Chinese. Fusang Chinese is more Jurchen and both mix in some native elements. Tawantinsuyu is like a mix of all of them in that it uses its own language but borrows some Jurchen words for things that were not common or unknown in Quechua and it has a Chinese based writing system.

Tawantinsuyu uses a writing system inspired by the Jurchen and basic Chinese scripts, devised by Jin administrators who had experience using both scripts to represent a non-Chinese language. The Quechua language remains largely the same, but there are a couple Jurchen and Chinese loanwords.

Evacuation

Isfahan - March 28

The crowds streaming out of Isfahan had not thinned in a week. Despite the authorities’ best efforts to organize things, things had quickly spiraled out of control. Wilhelmina should’ve seen that one coming. What did they expect when attempting to evacuate fifteen million people in a week? Thankfully there were no stampedes or mass panic, and they all knew where to go. The Artesh had set up a primary camp outside the town of Kuhpayeh in the east, though those with the means would travel farther to cities like Tehran in the north and Shiraz in the south. It wouldn’t mean much if Isfahan fell, but at least they’d be out of the direct line of fire. Wilhelmina didn’t want their deaths on her conscience. From her balcony, she continued watching the traffic jams—each car stuffed full with valuables, special rugs, and even some light furniture—inch past the palace. Hundreds had abandoned their cars to try their luck on foot, their hands full of luggage, pets, and small children. Buses, taxis, and trucks honked loudly, and where Wilhelmina could see through their windows she saw they were fully packed with more evacuees. Behind her, she heard the attendants running through the hallways with heavy boxes—full of artwork historical artifacts—in their hands. After what happened in Scandinavia, India, Russia, and Livonia, they had to protect Persia’s cultural heritage as much as its people.

She went back inside. “Kids, are you ready to—oh.”

She spotted the two kids cuddling on one of the couches. Friedrich had his head on Ilyana’s shoulder, and the girl had protectively wrapped her arms around him like he was a large plushie. They had dozed off, half-packed suitcases scatterd around them. Wilhelmina cleared her throat, instantly waking them up. Their faces turned as red as beets, and they rocketed away in opposite directions.

“Ew, Ricky!”

“Sorry, Grandma!”

Wilhelmina just laughed. “Looks like you two were very comfortable.”

“Was not!”

“I wasn’t!”

Wilhelmina continued smiling. Did Franz and I ever do that? I don’t remember. Even if we did, it probably wasn’t as cute. I think he was scared of my mom. And the paparazzi. And those snobby nobles. “There will be plenty of time for that in the future.”

The kids remained completely red. Then they resumed packing with a renewed determination.

“You sure know how to motivate them, huh?” Gunduz said.

Wilhelmina lurched back several inches when she noticed Gunduz leaning on the doorway. “When did you get here?”

“When I heard them shouting from three rooms over.”

“That was almost the whole time!”

Gunduz shrugged. “Guess I was here the whole time, then.”

“Quickly!” Ilyana shoved more clothes into her suitcase and then zipped it up. “We don’t have time, Ricky!”

“…time…” Friedrich said.

“Okay, I’ll help!” Ilyana finished packing Friedrich’s suitcase as well.

“Looks like they’re ready to go,” Wilhelmina said.

“Great, the helicopter’s ready on the roof,” Gunduz said.

“What about you? You ready to go? Izinchi and Julian have already left.”

Gunduz shook her head. “I need ammunition, not a ride. I’m staying behind.”

Wilhelmina’s jaw dropped. “You?! Staying behind?”

“Ha, the look on your face!” Gunduz beamed. “Now it’s my turn to surprise you.”

“Okay, I can understand why we’d agree to me staying behind, but you?” Wilhelmina said. “I don’t want you to get hurt.”

“Now you know how I felt, huh? And don’t worry, I can look after myself.”

“What, you’re gonna break out some crazy superpowers I didn’t know about?”

Gunduz shook her head. “I wish. If I had them, I’d have blown up the committee by now.”

“You and me both. We’d be unstoppable.” Imagine that. “But seriously, what do you mean?”

Gunduz winked. “I told you before, I’m keeping it a secret. Now let’s get these kids out of the city.”

---

Several floors down, the betharium lab had completely changed over the last week. The main reactor had been dismantled, and the parts had been shipped to a storage facility in Shiraz. The tables were all gone. Researchers were stuffing their notes and journals into suitcases. Anything they couldn’t take, they shredded. If the enemy made it as far as this lab, they wouldn’t find anything useful.

One table remained, with six chairs set up around it. Tania checked two boxes of EMP bullets—one for sniper rounds and another for pistol ones. Angelica looked over her pistol. Magnus held Alexandra’s hand. Alexandra’s other hand twirled the Impala’s keys. Thea looked over a map of Isfahan. And Alex was lost in thought.

We’ve come so far, and it’s now come to this. It still feels unreal.

“So we’re really doing this?”

“Backing out now?” Angelica said.

“No,” Alex said, “Are we still good to go?”

“My rifle’s ready,” Tania said.

“So’s my pistol,” Angelica said.

“The Impala’s ready,” Alexandra said.

“Have you done enough test drives?”

“Believe me, she has,” Magnus said, “Her skills could use some improvement—ow!”

Alexandra retracted her elbow. “Blame the engine for being too powerful. Need one more adjustment and it should be good to go for the real run.”

“Having second thoughts, Alex?” Thea said. “I understand. It’s Josh, after all.”

“If only I could be like you, Thea,” Alex said, “You have no qualms about Theodor.”

“No, no, no. It’s fine. You don’t have to be like me, Alex.”

“But we need strength.” We must do what we must. Whatever it takes.

“Not at the cost of who we are.” Thea took his hand. “If we take out Josh and Theodor but lose the man I fell in love with, that wouldn’t be much of a victory. Be yourself, Alex. We can plan around it.”

“And don’t forget, we’re your friends and family,” Alexandra said, “We’re here for you.”

“Actually, I’m just here to make sure you nerds at least have some backup,” Angelica said, “We’ll deal with him, if you can’t.”

By that, do you mean killing him? But Thea…

“Same here,” Tania said.

“We can do this, Alex,” Thea said, “We’ve planned for this. We know what to do. Stick to the plan, and we’ll make it. Then you’ll no longer need to worry about Josh.”

“Wouldn’t that be nice…” Empty words. There’s no way you’re going to defeat Josh. You’re going to die, and they’ll just run when they see your dead body. Why don’t you run first?

Thea looked at Alex, expecting a response, but all Alex could do was look back, taking in every feature of her. She had changed out of her lab coat into casual clothes: khaki pants, a black and white collared shirt, and the red shawl hanging over her shoulders as usual. It was a simple outfit anyone in the city could’ve put together on a budget, but she made it so graceful and elegant just by wearing it. Her raven ponytail hung over one shoulder like a dark waterfall. Her cheeks were slightly dry and flaky—they had run out of lotion last week, and with everything happening he didn’t want to buy more—but he would never say that to her face. Her eyes watched him gently, yet they also bore into his soul and made it impossible to hide his feelings. She wasn’t wearing makeup today—like with the lotion, they ran out and hadn’t bought more—but he didn’t mind. He thought she looked cuter when she wasn’t wearing makeup. But again, he wouldn’t say that to her face.

“Alex? You okay?” Thea tilted her head ever so slightly in concern, causing Alex’s heart to flutter again.

Suddenly, his mood shifted. His mind filled with rage. His fists clenched and immediately unclenched when he felt a searing heat surge through them. Just as I expected, it’s half finished and thus horrible. His mind wandered and came to dwell on a troubling thought: bashing in Thea’s head with a pan until her brains and blood were scattered on the kitchen floor. As he took in the ever so vivid details of that grisly scene, he winced and immediately pushed it away. No. No. Frak. I would never treat Thea like this. Why do I have these thoughts?

Because…
His imagination raced away again. He saw a hand rising and descending onto him, each time inflicting more and more pain. He heard the deafening roar of a shotgun and the squishy squelching of a dog’s head being liquidated. This is who you are. Alex shook his head again. No, it’s not. What the hell even are these scenes? They’ve never happened to me. One hand gripped the bottom of his shirt so tightly it almost ripped. One side of his lips twitched. Please, what the frak am I seeing? More scenes of Thea dead, a familiar dog’s headless body, and his bloodstained hands rushed past his eyes. Make it stop! It feels like I’ve done this stuff before, but…but…did I? Did I forget? Oh God, what does this mean? Is this really me?!

“I don’t think so.” Alex heard a voice behind him.

No way. You now? “Herr Oskar?”

His old teacher gave off his usual gentle smile, the one everyone remembered from middle school. “Hello.”

“I didn’t expect to find you here, of all places.”

“Well, what a coincidence, then. I’m here to make my voice heard.”

“Wouldn’t that be nice?” Something felt off about this exchange. Not that Oskar was here—Alex definitely knew he wasn’t. “Especially after what happened?”

Oskar shrugged. “That was long ago. We’ve all moved on. We’ve all grown as individuals, I hope.”

“I sure hope I did.” It was as if he was recalling an old memory. But it didn’t match up.

“Believe in yourself. Knowing your mistakes is the first step towards resolving them.”

“But what if I forget who I started out as?” After leaving middle school, the next time Alex saw Oskar was…when his body was swinging from a crane in Kyparades Park. “What if I lose myself?”

Oskar shook his head. “As long as you remember who you are and what you stand for, you won’t lose yourself. Stay true to your convictions and do the right thing.”

Alex came to a dark realization. These weren’t his memories. “But how do I do that? Everything’s gone to hell. This world is so brutal and I feel like I have to change who I am to survive.”

“You don’t need to change to survive.”

They were Josh’s. “How can you say that?”

“Because I’m speaking from experience. You know, I see a little of myself in you. Rough around the edges at your age, yet brimming with potential.”

He likely got these memeories as a result of the remote viewing test from last month. “Potential? How can you say that about me?” Was this what Josh was thinking? “After what I’ve done?” He must’ve met Oskar at some point before that went down. And…was that what Oskar really said? How could he say that, after everything Josh did?

“Being your teacher, I tend to notice things. You’re still young. You’ve got the rest of your life ahead of you. I can see—no, I actually know—you’ll go on to do great things.” He put a hand on Alex’s shoulder. “You just need to make the right choice. You need to be yourself.”

“It’s just that…I’m scared.” This was all Alex now. He was now taking control of the memory. There wasn’t much else Josh had said, but Alex didn’t want it to end yet. He wanted more time to speak with Oskar. Time he would never have for real. It sucked that he had to go through Josh and experimental technology just to have some way of “talking” to his old teacher. “I’m scared I’ll lose myself. The world’s out to get me. Everything’s turned upside down. The bad are being rewarded and the good are being punished. They evil get everything handed to them, while even if we work our butts off for a glimmer of hope, it can easily be snatched away and snuffed out. If I stand up and try to do the right thing, won’t I just get stomped back down into the dirt?”

“That’s no excuse not to do the right thing,” Oskar said, “Staying in place and ignoring everything going on to save yourself won’t change anything. You’ll only do that forever, while the rest of the world moves on and eventually comes for you. Better to take a stand now than sit and wait for your demise.”

I never remembered Oskar being this direct. “Are you just saying what I want to hear?”

Oskar shook his head. “Why would I ever do that? All I do is offer you the same thing I offered Josh: a choice. It is up to you to decide what you want to do. I can’t decide what kind of person you want to be. That is up to you.”

“And what if I choose the wrong path?” Alex said. “Like Josh did?”

Oskar smiled. “Don’t worry. When it comes down to it, I believe you’ll do the right thing. I believe in you, Alex.”

“Alex?” Thea waved her hand in front of Alex’s face. “Hello? Earth to Alex?”

Alex blinked, and Oskar was gone. “What?”

“You zoned out for a couple seconds,” Alexandra said, “You okay?”

“Yeah, I’m okay. Just needed some time to think.”

“You don’t have to hide it,” Angelica said, “I’ve zoned out like that before. I see the faces of my dead comrades. It happens to all of us.”

Only thing is I didn’t see any dead comrades. “Sure, we’ll go with that.”

Angelica got the hint and moved on. “Okay. So you’re still onboard?”

Alex gingerly took Thea’s hand. His stormy thoughts were quickly put at ease with the warm and soft feeling of her hand. His face relaxed. His cheeks flushed, and his lips loosened into a smile. “As long as I’m with you all, I won’t lose my way.”

Oskar lives on in the words he passed down to Alex and, for better or worse, Josh.

Pleasantly surprised to see Oskar again. It's good to see him give good advice to Alex and set on him on the right track and give Josh the slient treatment.

This reminds me, I remember you saying awhile ago you were listening to Persona 3 music to set the mood for the 11th century arc, and given that game's themes revolving around grief, loss and coming to terms with death, I'm interested in seeing how those themes could apply to 11th/12th century character arcs like Wilhelm and Fredrich the Glorious', given all the personal tragedies they suffered thanks to the Worm. We can discuss this in our PM chat if you're worried about spoilers here.

I remember you mentioned before how Penglai having a history of suppressing the Hindi Dakshavi dialect (something I'm sure Zhao is doing again along with Han and Fusang's government doing similar persecution of minority languages or Chinese dialects that aren't Mandarin or Classical Chinese) which makes me wonder what influences Dakshavi would have?

Technically this was a memory of Oskar talking to Josh, so it's not exactly the silent treatment...

I think a core theme that runs through all of the encounters with the Worm we've seen so far is dealing with fate and death. Diana saw her future, including her own death, and she was powerless to avoid it, but she still lived her life to the fullest and planned around it. I think something similar would drive earlier encounters with the Worm in the 11th century.

Probably influences from western aboriginal languages, Japanese settlers coming over from the east, and various southern Indian languages.

It is still strange to me to think that in TTL Tehran is just any Persian city since it is more important in OTL. Mabey in TTL it is to Persia what New York is the US, St. Petersburg in Russia, Shanghai in China, etc, etc. Basically cites of major cultural and fanatical importance.

I really hope nothing happens to these kids and they they get to live a full and healthy life. If they do then I really see Friedrich and Ilyana being Kaiser and Kaiserin in the future. However I would find it interesting if it would be Ilyana ruling instead of Friedrich with him helping her potentially leading to another era were the empire is ruled by Women if their eventual child is also a daughter?

Really? After rereading that part: Oh shoot. I did not realize that the first time reading it.

Lastly I know that this might be to simple but I am watching "World War Two" by Indy Neidell and in episode 85 at 1:16 to 2:32 Indy talks about an event in were the Germans fire on a staff car that kills the driver and are able to capture the three British commanders in Libya at the time. Apart of me wonders if the same thing might happen to Elias, Theodor and Josh?

In OTL, Tehran was chosen as the capital by the Qajars in 1786 to avoid the factions and intrigue that plagued previous dynasties. There were various cities that served as the capital throughout Iran’s history, and Isfahan was one of those the Seljuks had.
We’ll have to see if they get that far.
Really? After rereading that part: Oh shoot. I did not realize that the first time reading it.
Yeah, I took the dialogue from that previous interaction, as Josh would have still remembered it even if he wasn’t consciously recalling it.
Lastly I know that this might be to simple but I am watching "World War Two" by Indy Neidell and in episode 85 at 1:16 to 2:32 Indy talks about an event in were the Germans fire on a staff car that kills the driver and are able to capture the three British commanders in Libya at the time. That would require them all to be in the same car though.

That video makes me wonder about Jerusalem’s occupation policies in the future, because so far we’ve seen them directly rule Russia and Yavadi after conuqering them and attempt to wipe out India and Scandinavia’s populations so far, but I wonder if there are any collaborators the Committee could use to run conqured territories in the future, like the Nazis had with the Ustase and the Vichy French regime? The Commitee seems even more belligerent than the Nazis in its view of conquered countries, so I don’t see them working with even fringe far right collaborators.

Well you do have leaders like Zhao in Penglai and whoever the leader of South Japan is who are both allied to Jerusalem. However I think that if the Committee are able to win the war then they will turn on them and turn their territories into districts as well like Russia and Yavadi.

Jerusalem’s plan is to bring in administrators from the homeland to enforce the occupation and integration into the larger empire. All non-Jerusalem leaders are to be shot as traitors and enemies. A short-sighted policy, as military occupations generally require the cooperation of local authorities to stay in power and derive legitimacy, but the committee isn’t exactly the most sane administration at this point.

The alliance with Zhao, Sakamoto (the leader of southern Japan), and Nepal (yes, they are also allies of Jerusalem, and I’ll be spotlighting them in the next chapter) is an alliance in the sense of “you guys will die last.” Zhao has been a friend to the committee for a while so he might get some special treatment, but if Jerusalem wins the war, you can bet there will be political shenanigans that still bring Penglai into the empire and effectively neutralize him. Jerusalem only supports Sakamoto with some weapons that could help him destroy his Chinese-backed enemies in the north and couldn’t care less for him and his regime. Once the war ends, Japan would get Area 11’d. As for Nepal, it’s in the middle of nowhere and the regime is friendly for now, so Jerusalem won’t bother them until they’ve taken out easier to reach targets around it.
I would say that China and Persia/Iran have a good compaction going on how many capitals they had throughout their histories.
Yep, Iran has 32 and China has 31, according to Wikipedia. And China’s count is pushing it since it includes Manchukuo, the Jiangxi Soviet, short-lived capitals that lasted less than 5 years, provisional capitals like the KMT’s various ones during World War II, and various pretender dynasties that never amounted to much. Culturally, China has really only considered 4-8 cities to be true capitals, among them Beijing, Nanjing, Luoyang, Xi’an, Kaifeng, and Hangzhou.

I find it interesting that many Persian capitals, like Babylon (which was one of the Achaemenid Empire’s actual administrative cores, while Persepolis was a ceremonial capital) and Ctesiphon, were in Mesopotama, and Seljuk Persia briefly ruled Mesopotamia until the Reich conquered it. Once the war ends, I could see nationalists in Persia making the claim for Persia to take Mesopotamia, citing the Commitee’s horrible management and treatment of the region and its inhabitants (as they will definitely be a lot of people in the Middle East who wouldn’t be wanting to live under the Reich anymore), or Persia’s historic claims and cultural ties to the province. Not to mention the first and second Roman empires having brief military occupations of Mesopotamia for only a few years, as opposed to Persian empires controlling it for centuries.
